Healthy, active and eating.
Still thinking a name for him/her. Really headache. And he is very gentle with a smiley face always when it stares at you. Anyone can tell me how to identify its gender?

More pictures coming soon, i could just sit there for hours looking at it.

*Bought from local licensed fish stores not from illegal importer. And its better to buy licensedly this fish is cheaper than obtaining it illegally. At least save you 2k and up from my experience.
*
Did you get it at Irene Aquarium? I saw one there a few weeks ago. Tempted to buy it but no space to keep it just yet. Lucky you. It was about 3k + only

There used to be plenty of jaguars at the Subang Jaya pay pond. RM 3 for as long as you want and you can carry them home in buckets. Not sure if there are still as many as there used to be.

Hey, I need your opinion, I have an 8 ft tank that is going to be set up (once my dad is done renovating the house, most probably in Feb. 2013).
Do you think tiles would be good as the base or river sand? Which one has better temperature regulation, as in would tiles keep the water temperature cooler or river sand?

I am planning to put in river sand as my aba aba loves to dig about in it.

Would you know how much the lapradei is going for?

In other news, I'm going to go fishing with my brothers tomorrow to catch more bronze featherback knifefish. biggrin.gif Tried feeding one to my aba-aba and the fellow just snapped it in half and chomped it down. It seems to like the featherback more than feeder catfish. It becomes more aggressive and it is also more interesting to watch.

diff is material and fibreglass tend to last longer compared with normal tanks.
blue or dark grey if not mistaken.

If kept outdoors, under the sun/rain...etc (normal Malaysian weather), will it still last?

Planning to get one and install in the garden so it'll look natural. Cheaper than building a real pond.

Hi, I need a little advice. I'm planning to keep my lungfish in the garden or at least somewhere outdoors.

It's 2 ft ++ long and I am planning to put it into a fibreglass tank.

How do I deal with the lungfish's heavy bioload? It produces cat size poop and if I don't scoop it out on time, the water goes cloudy and smells foul. I am currently using a top filter, and it doesn't seem to get the job done. The tank doesn't allow sump filtration and when I move it to the garden, it would call for a top filtration as well.

I currently carry out full water changes every two weeks, and it's not very economical for a 3ft tank. Also, it's really troublesome and time consuming.

Anyone here with lungfishes? Please do advice.

hi, once i saw a member talked about using the blue tong to diy as canister filter.
I think it might work in your case.
Or u try drill holes like discus tank, then with a flick of your fingers, it wc.
Once from you-tube, i saw a farm just turn on the knob and water gushing out from below. Then another water source gushing in from top.
It took only minutes.  flex.gif

Yup, I remember that blue tong canister filter. Problem is, it's huge and quite unsightly.

I thought I'd get a 4ft x 2ft fibre glass tank (that comes with the top filtration) and DIY it to become a sump tank...somehow. Need to do more reading up first.

I'll check out youtube too.

I'll suggest you diy the sump if you got the knowledge and patient. i also lazy wanna change water actually. I'll show you mine mini aquaphonic system.  brows.gif so far no problem..water clean as usual....sorry cos i didn't snap the the blue tank size around 2 1/2 feet x 1 feet only.  laugh.gif

Is sump still the most effective form of filtering? And that aquaphonics is a great idea! Does the water flow back directly into the main tank, or it is filtered somemore? Also, does the tank recieve direct sunlight (for the plants to grow)?

Bros and sis,

Wana ask ya, If we have a SUMP we no need to change water or wash the filter inside for years to come?

IS that true. Since somebody asking bout it too~

Thanks for your input.
*
I have a 4ft tank with a 2ft sump. I clean out the filter almost every 3 weeks. So far, I haven't changed the water in 3 months. Still clean. I guess it depends on the amount of waste the fish can produce. Once I see the filter media starting to look mucky, I wash it.

Out of topic, what is the best feeder to bulk up carnivorous fish? My aba-aba doesn't seem to be growing (or maybe it's growing reaaaaaly slowly). I'm feeding it catfish almost every day, and just recently, frogs.

Hey, I'm just wondering out loud, is it worth it to keep an african lungfish?

My fella just eats and poops giant size poops and clouds up its tank water really fast. Thinking of letting it go. But then again, it's a lungfish.

are they easy to take care from your experience? also do you keep him by himself or mixing with other fishes?
*
From past and current experience, they are really easy to keep. The one I had previous years ago only ate feeder, the current lungfish is on pellets. Just dump the food in and it'll take its own time to eat. No thrill really. I does eat a frog now and then but recently it only prefers pellets. As for feeder koi, it kills them and lets them float around in the tank.

I'm thinking of moving it outdoors into a black water tank.

I think my issue with the fish is that it's so boring, but at the same time, it's so cute. Anyone else here with that problem?

General question:

Is it possible to keep zebra knifes or tiger knifes in pairs, or groups?

In my experience with aba-aba knifes, they can't. Probably because they grow real big, real fast.

Since zebras and tigers grow only to about 45 cm long, housing them in say, a 4ft tank should be no problem, yes?

Arare has zebra knifes and I want them.
But I need to get fish in pairs. You know, in case one dies, I still have back up. tongue.gif

Hi guys,

There's a small crack on my tank. No water leaks out of the tank so I guess it's just a surface crack.

What can I use to seal it (Safety purposes) and cover it (aesthetic purpose)?

Any sealants or epoxy you can recommend me?

Sorry bro not sure about that. Maybe the sealent fron hardware could work, but regarding aesthetic aspect of it can i suggest u apply a black tape to cover on top of it since its quite close to bottom part?jimat mah.haha

Alright.

I was told to use this:
http://www.allaboutwaterproof.com/image/ca...one-500x500.JPG

But it seems that it'd make the tank look rather "cacat".

What is the black tape called?
Then later I can ask the aquarium shop for it.

Just ask LFS packed my albino sen.
They said: wow~ so fat.
kekeke..I sombong liao.
Birchirs depend on which, if it's king..such as PBB, Lapredei, PEE your 6 ft ok ok only. Ppl opt for 8 or 10. Tigers are slow growers. But territorial when grown up unless you have space for them.
Filtration need to be very good, if not "kong kiang"

How much is your lap going for?
My previous lap was one foot long before its tank mate (African lungfish) chomped half it's body up. The tail half. cry.gif

Anyone here know who I call for tank maintenance and set up (Washing/filtration setup..etc.)?
Around PJ Section 12 area.

Hows the driftwood ? Lol.

You've only set it up last week?
*
It's heavy and really solid. Where did you get it from?
I tried a few LFS in PJ, all the driftwood they had were the soft wood, flaky type.

But really, the driftwood you donated really helped a lot. Thank you so much!

And yeah, the tank was only set up last week. My house was under renovation since last year. It's completed now, so that's why I could start on the tank.

My dad suggested putting neon tetras with the aba-aba reasoning that they are too small for it to catch. (And also because he loves neon tetras).

What do you guys think?

No lah, got no more room for new fish. But decorations can fit well even in garden, and can use them anytime when running new project/ tanks.

Beer8bottles, ur aquarium 8' in size, rite? U place it outdoor, any UV staffs in operation? How do u preserve the wood cabinet from the weather? Sorry i'm asking too much, been thinking of moving my aquarium outdoor as well, but have to consider things.
*
It's under the porch, so no rain water will reach it. It has been painted with waterproofing-wood varnish (double coat). The entire interior of the cabinet has also been double coated with
the varnish. I didn't want any damp spots because of the sump.

Besides that, extra internal support was added. We added extra columns of timber. Will post pictures of them later this week.

I have a submersible UV filter (10W) in the sump. I turn it on only in the day time. Water is clear so far.

I have a few other aquariums at the back of the house that sunlight can reach in the evenings, the water is pond water green. Fishes are fine though.

I think the amount of sunlight that hits the tank contributes to the algae growth in the tank.
