14" notebooks are smaller and thus lighter, the smaller screen will consume less power as well, leading to longer battery runtimes
15" notebooks, on the contrary have larger screens, thus more workspace. The larger size will mean better cooling as well due to the large space within the laptop. However, the larger size will result in it being less portable and have shorter battery lives..

only go 15r for FHD

14r uses gt640 which means you have optimus.

AFAIK 15r doesnt have numpads which for me is a big deal on 15.6.

Dont forget the backlits, they're cheap and very useful/nice feature.

also, note 3612 is weaker than 3610.

Yes. FHD refers to Full High Definition, that is the resolution of the screen smile.gif

Nvidia Optimus is a technology (program) allowing you to switch in between your Nvidia card and the Intel HD3000/4000 of the CPU.
Optimus will automatically switch to the Nvidia card when you are playing games for better performance; and will automatically switch to the integrated GPU when you are trying to save battery nod.gif

Its a good thing when it works properly laugh.gif
The problem with Nvidia Optimus is that sometimes it doesn't switch the GPU for certain games and you'll have to do it manually laugh.gif
Still, its acceptable since the technology is still quite new, it'll require some time to mature..

So far there is only 3DMark11 score from 7730M which show its slower than GT640M. You should wait a little longer for more benchmark from 7730M.

I think you guys should hold 1st...
It seems like Dell Malaysia haven't fully updated their customization options for the Inspiron 15R (Special Edition) yet...
There might be HDD customization options as well hmm.gif

Still, with FullHD, this laptop will probably be a hit, even better now since its a Dell nod.gif

Yes, the RM3399 version of the 15R comes with FullHD as standard...
There is a description on "mSATA SSD - 32GB " as well... so you guys might want to wait until the customization website is completed 1st hmm.gif

I thought those coupons are constantly being given out? hmm.gif
Anyway, I doubt it'll take long for Dell to update their systems nod.gif

If you are really that impatient, then do confirm with Dell Sales Agents on the available customization options for the HDD (if you are looking into using SSD/ SSD-HDD hybrids systems, that is)..
Personally I would try to avoid the 1TB (5400rpm) HDD because its very slow... at least go for 7200rpm ones even though the storage might be smaller (750GB).. which is why I would advice you guys to wait and see 1st as we're not sure whether they are offering these kind of configurations or not

Emailed DELL already...asking whether the student 7% discount can overlap with the 7% EPP discount tongue.gif and also about the HDD customization option. Their customer service really excellent thumbup.gif

Edit:
The 7% EPP discount CAN'T work with the FHD 15r SE. Only the normal one.

seems like the HDD configuration is fixed already. hmm.gif

Means changing the HDD to other option like lower storage but faster rpm HDD, SSD+HDD hybrid etc. Since they say the HDD option is fixed which means it can only us 1TB 5400rpm HDD and you can't customize it...

Currently viewing for the Dell Inspiron 15R SE also.

My current desktop is kinda dated. New house built in table hard to fit in my current CPU. Was thinking change to laptop.

It is a wise choice from desktop change to laptop?

Not much play games. But recently play Diablo3 only.

Comment?

You can purchase through Dell Malaysia right? hmm.gif

You could also deal with Dell sellers here in Garage Sales, where payment will be via cash/ bank transfer nod.gif

Last time I also purchase via email. Ask agent for best price and ask them to issue quotation for two LCDs tongue.gif

Anyway in the end I opted for bank in transfer since I want to sleep well at night without worrying about the abuse of credit cards.

The HDD is 5400rpm, so 5.9 is normal... the bottleneck in performance will most probably be caused by the HDD hmm.gif
Please do keep us posted, this is a hot model and I'm sure a lot of people are waiting for reviews notworthy.gif

Finally put in an order for the 15R.... temptation was just too great for the value for paying the price for such a good spec (not great, but pretty good for its price).

Actually would like to know on keyboard quality. I usually spend quite a good chunk of my time in front of a laptop typing documents and doing presentations so a good keyboard is important for me. I would love if the keyboard is as good as the Thinkpads tongue.gif

My last purchase of Asus N43SL. The specs are great but due to the poor keyboard quality, I sold it after owning it for 4 months.

How about this Dell keyboard? Is it comfortable to type on and touch? Is it plasticky?

is the speaker okay? I feel like it's gonna be very weak. I am eying on the 15R as my next laptop because of FHD + 32GB SSD + i7 with 4 USB 3.0 ports..

But I am buying in august, hopefully better laptops will surface.

ah yes, coz my apartment here is very dusty as there's a construction going on very nearby. wiping the lappie everyday biggrin.gif yup, the speakers are located below, not above the keyboard. sound is decent enough for me though biggrin.gif and about the bag, if you select it online, you have to pay rm69 more for it. i personally called dell to order the lappie and asked for the bag and they gave it to me for free. lol its a belkin 15.6 bag btw tongue.gif

As what danleongwz mentioned, you can always bargain for the bag, or for more discounts...
The bag is quite good in terms of quality, but its kind of ugly haha sweat.gif

14R SE is using Nvidia GT640M instead of ATI 7730M...

Curious about the FPS too, though I would be getting the 15R with FHD instead.

Gaming on FHD resolution will decrease FPS, but you can always lower the resolution.. the 7730M should be able to handle most, if not all games smoothly at HD+ resolution hmm.gif

im having the 14r which is using the gt640m with optimus. no it does not get confused switching between both of them. when you full load your comp with games etc, you can notice it as you can hear the air blowing out from the heat sink beside the comp. erm, i did not check the fps. i set everything to high, 2xAA and it was very smooth. dare not set it to ultra tongue.gif i did not opt for extra warranty though. no other freebies. just the bag only. smile.gif

I'm planning to get the 15R SE with back lit keyboard. There is two versions of 15R SE on the Dell website, one costs RM2999, the other RM 3399.

The only difference between the two versions is the SSD only right? Does the 2999 version has Full HD screen?

And how do I get this 7% discount?

Added on June 2, 2012, 4:12 amAfter some research, I answered my own question. tongue.gif

15R SE RM2999 is not Full HD
15R SE RM3399 is Full HD, with 32GB SSD

And for the 7% discount, use the following code.

Tier 3: Dell laptop series between RM 2,501 - RM 3,000.
Get an extra 7% coupon cash off when you purchase now.
Use Coupon Number "LL35NXBV24PBLM" at the checkout.

Although the 15R SE with Full HD screen and 32GB SSD is RM3399, more than the RM3000 stated, it still can be used rclxms.gif

Hmm I'm not sure, but I'd bet the coupon is only available for online purchases.

But I guess you could ask the people at Pavilion to give you a similar discount since it is offered in the Dell official website.

Or a simpler way would be to just buy from the online store tongue.gif

You don't need the basic client installation. That's for those user that don't know how to setup wireless connection with a modem/router.

Which one is the best for gaming & other work like assignments ?

You might want to check with devour again since he just mentioned that the Inspiron 15R SE offered by dealers are a bit different from what you get online i.e. they come with Nvidia GT640M instead..
You do get better software support (Photoshop etc) for Nvidia cards, although that depends on what softwares you're using hmm.gif
But if you're only using for gaming, I guess getting the AMD card will do as well nod.gif

Or will this be available in dell official store later?

Thinking of grabbing it before they change the price.
Selected the 3 year warranty and it summed up to 2.5k
i5-3210m
GT 640M
14" 1366x768
500GB 7200 RPM

Pretty decent eh?

Most ppl place it in a caddy and then use as external HDDs...
You can try your luck selling it if you want.. but the chances of ppl interested in it is low hmm.gif

For the 14R SE, I chatted with Dell sales agent on their website, I don't think it is mistake since they confirm the price with me. If add with 3 years warranty the price will be around 2.5K, if minus student discount 5% which will be around 2375.

Nice deal?

GT 640M is a decent GPU.
IMHO, I think it is a great laptop for the price.

Only thing I'm worried about is.. it is Dell.
Hopefully it doesn't break down since I'm in Australia.

Anyone know if I can claim warranty from Dell Australia if I buy from Dell Malaysia?

There are many types of Nvidia GT640M. I'm not sure whether it is Kepler GT640M or Kepler GT640M LE.
The former is relatively better than the latter.

For Dell, 3 years warranty = international warranty..

You can transfer your warranty to Australia through Dell's website nod.gif
International warranty is applicable if the country you are in is also offering the laptop you're using nod.gif

May I know why this is cheaper than the 15R SE in dell website?

http://www.techhypermart.com/notebooks/del...6-notebook.html

RM2609 with everything same except 4GB RAM, this one even better with 1600x900 screen and GT640M GPU.

Since I can always add another 4GB RAM myself, is it better to get this than the RM2999 from dell?

actually this is the roughly priced... i did chat with dell sales n got a quote. 3yr in-home warranty + backlight keyboard is 31xx only... compare to online which is 3340.. warranty is very important for a notebook especially if u are using with dedicated GC, if u buy outside normally they only comes with 1 year warranty. If you are to extended you require to go bac to dell for extension. the price is usually more expensive than u get direct from dell + warranty. So actually after much calculation it is still the same after all. by the way, i opt for 14" cos 15.6" is too heavy for me.

I did consider momentus XT previously too, but in the end get SSD, 1st momentus XT is stil hdd base, so everything is still "fragile". 2nd i read somewer regarding the reliability of the "cache" which said if the cache spoil, then ur hdd is gone. and 500GB is the 1st gen which is 8GB of cache if i'm not mistaken. in malaysia market stil cant get gen-2 which comes with 16gb cache. tat would almost on par with SSD in some performance.

u can check out dell website now...there is a rm200 rebate for 14R n 15R SE model + oso another 7 % DELL EPP discount...so it is even cheaper than this shop + u can customize it with extended warranty and also backlit keyboard( which is only rm42 and looks totally boss) which i dun think can b done if u buy from physical store...I myself plan to get the 15R SE with FHD n SSD ....

There is always student discount available if purchase from DELL. For this you need to contact sales agent via Dell chat first.
Good luck. biggrin.gif

QUOTE(iori_argami @ Jun 8 2012, 08:35 AM)
actually this is the roughly priced... i did chat with dell sales n got a quote.
*
You didn't understand my question, the point is not the price. The 15R SE offered in techhypermart has GT640M and 1600x900 screen at RM2609, while the one in Dell website is ATI 7730M (weaker) and 1366x768 screen for RM2999.

You get it? This GT640M spec is NOT available from Dell website and why you all keep telling me Dell can get backlit and fullHD but my question is the GT640M and 1600x900 screen sweat.gif

15 inch screen with 1600x900 screen is just perfect and GT54640M is faster too. Any comment about this? Regardless of the 3 years warranty, is techhypermart trustable?

Dell 15R SE shouldn't have GT640M. Only the Dell 14R SE has it. Do you have the links to the techhypermart?

I am curious about this too, if really 1600x900 with GT640M the gaming performance should be much better than 1920x1080 with 7730M.

FYI, 15R SE is with 1600x900 screen... and FYI, some spec available to reseller doesnt meant u can get it customize from Dell website.

Regarding trustable, i believe this should not be discuss here. As it involve company etc. You can always call them up to check whether the spec they provided is real or jus cut and paste.

Is the 3 years in home warranty for rm299 really worth spending? Still hesitating on that part...bcoz without the 3 years warranty.. i could get dell inspiron 15R SE (FHD) + backlit keyboard and media cd for roughly 3k....

1. getting an i7 will mean higher heat, best to avoid if you're using for gaming only... get an i7 only if your work requires the additional processing power nod.gif
2. 500GB (7200rpm) is actually better than a 1TB (5400rpm) HDD since its significantly faster nod.gif Upgrade to hybrid HDDs or SSD instead if you have the money nod.gif
3. as what iori_argami has mentioned, RAM its better to upgrade yourself since its cheaper doing that~

means even i have used it for few days. i just need to pack back into the box for them?  and send back the package at my own cost? hmm.gif  not manage to get the rm200 rebate only..
*
If they refuse to give you rebate, you can ask for refund as far as the item are new without any scratch and within the return policy timeframe. Hurry up, call Dell & nego with the sales manager as they have more authority. If still can't make it, ask them to arrange the refund for you. Beware, they may counter offer you with freebies. Just stick with the refund or rebate, hopefully you should able to make it. Wish you good luck. biggrin.gif
pls refer to Dell returned policies for details.

under wat conditions or circumstances we can ask for a replacement of a new laptop?
Quoted from Steventan85
"any circumstances.... examples like u dont like the performance of the notebook , u ordered the wrong spec , or the notebook got some defect or cosmetic blemished.....

i juz returned 1 unit of Inspiron 1525 due to the poor performance of Celeron processor....go and check for that topic in tis section.."

the 1tb 5400rpm drive is not realy slow, comparable to the 7200rpm 500gb due to the higher density.

dude that's the price for 1 year warranty for non students...... rm3250 is for 3 years warranty and wth student discount. I'm pretty sure that rm3199 isn't the final price if u wish to add 2 more years warranty to make it as 3 years warranty........

Now better get the Inspiron 15R SE, i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M + (1920x1080; anti-glare) + 32GB SSD + 1TB HDD(5400rpm), 8GB RAM cause it is at 9 % discount and not 7 %, roughly extra RM 64 discount (Final price RM 2,911.09). Apply coupon code Z0X576K3W513S?

If compare to the Inspiron 14R SE, i5-3210M + GT640M(28nm Kepler)@RM2199[2.38kg], 4GB, 500GB(7200rpm), cheaper by RM 700, but you don't get the FHD 1920 x 1080, i7 processor, 8 GB RAM and 32 GB SSD but advantage is the graphic card (640M vs AMD HD7730) and the HDD 500 GB (7200rpm) vs HDD 1GB (5400RPM)
The link still can access at http://www.dell.com/my/p/inspiron-14r-se-7...ron-14r-se-7420

If compare to the Inspiron 15R SE, i7-3612QM + AMD HD7730M, 8GB, 1TB(5400rpm) @RM2603 (after applying coupon code LL35NXBV24PBLM), cheaper RM 300 , but you don't get the FHD 1920 X 1080 and 32 GB SSD.

You can ask for rebate or refund within 14 days from the date of invoice as per Dell returned policy. Pls go thro' their returned policy as it may be very usefull in your negotiation. For refund, they may charge you around RM80 for shipping and handling charges

Quoted from Dell returned policy-
"If you are an end-user customer who bought new Dell-branded products directly from Dell in Malaysia, you may return them to the relevant Dell's factory within 14 days of the date of invoice for replacement or a refund or credit of the product purchase price. The refund or credit will not include any shipping and handling charges shown on your invoice. If you are an organization that bought the products under a written agreement with Dell, or if you bought the products under financing arrangements, the written agreement or financing agreement may contain different terms for the return of products than specified by this policy....."

http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/top...c=my&l=en&s=gen

For those who have ordered 14R/15R SE @2999 or 3399, without the RM200 rebate and 7% or 9% EPP discount, hurry up to call Dell & nego kau-kau. thumbup.gif
Wish you best of luck... icon_rolleyes.gif

Yeah call which number? Dell website has two numbers.

Customer Support 1800-880-022

I plan to call the first number, since this should be under sales right?

Why is there 7% or 9% EPP discount?

Which is the one students are entitled to?

They say every week different promotion, they cannot keep giving previous customers rebates because of that.

I'm gonna receive my new Dell tomorrow. Thinking about returning it and then ordering again for the cheaper price, but it is very troublesome sweat.gif

Hey guys,

I order the inspiron 14r, but forgot to tick 'include the Genuine Windows 7 64 Bit CD' for an extra RM10.
How am I supposed to reformat my laptop if something happens to my laptop?

Thanks.

If Dell refuse to give rebate due to their unfair pricing, you can ask them to arrange for full refund of your payment and returning the laptop to them as per Dell returned policy. You can also ask them to waive off the RM80 handling charges. If you fail to nego with their customer service, go further up and nego with their sale manager as they have higher authority. vmad.gif

Hopefully, they will give you rebate as they are more to lose if they lost their business. thumbup.gif

Wish you best of luck. icon_rolleyes.gif

I've never used the ones on the Inspirons, but it should be similar to that of Vostros hmm.gif
yes, the procedure is actually the same for all manufacturers.. there should be a program (most will pop up and remind you, very annoying laugh.gif) that you can use the make those recovery discs, usually you'll need 4 DVDs

I received my 15R SE with 32GB SSD this morning.

Quite satisfied with it so far. Only thing is I still don't know how to utilize the SSD. I thought it will be like another hard disk that will appear in My Computer but its not there.

Then I checked the tray at the bottom right corner and found an Intel Rapid Start thingy that shows my 32GB SSD is there. But I still have no idea how to access it lol

the ssd is for ssd caching one, you can choose to use 8gb for iFFs ( fast recover from hibernate) if you want.

you can say so, but you can disable the intel technology and use it as SSD if you want, which is pretty pointless as you can't install much things to a 32GB drive.

Hey guys, I'm getting very confused reading this thread...

For the Inspirion 14R SE, I saw someone mentioned RM2999, and some mentioned RM2599, but now what i see from Dell website is RM2199. But then there is quoted a "RM200 instant redemption" there.

So, actually how much have to pay for this model? The price has been changing all these while?
Btw, if order online and pay with credit card, any credit card will do or must use citibank credit card?

Pls help me to get things straight, TQ!

RM2199 version is i5 Ivy while RM2999 (now RM2799) is i7 Ivy. Both comes with GT640M.

But AFAIK RM2199 has been taken down from the website but there is still a hidden link to it. Here it is
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

For the credit card issue I guess you should call DELL representative directly as they have better knowledge than us. Or drop them an email, they replied quite quickly in my experience.

Ya, but it's pretty pointless, as the only optimized will be the operating system and some very limited amount of program installed on it.

It's better to enable the smart response technology

Haven't got myself a mouse yet, so I'm relying on the touch pad.

Kinda disappointed that the touch pad doesn't have a side scrolling function though. sad.gif I thought every laptop nowadays has it. Even the HP netbook that I gotten for free from TM for the Cool Uni pack 2 years back has it.

I take that back, just found the Dell Touch Pad settings at the control panel. Use gestures to scroll biggrin.gif

Can you or someone else who owns this laptop comment on the build quality? Does it feel solid or plasticky? I know the old Inspiron 14z felt very plasticky to me sad.gif

On a related note, is the silver trim around the top cover metal or plastic? How about the area around the keyboard and palm rest?

Thanks in advance for your time. I'm thinking of buying this laptop and it will really help me make my decision. notworthy.gif

hmm, build quality average, with the 'cover' (the one with inspiron word on it) not sticked properly, will attach photo soon.
both of them feels cold when i first touch them, and based of other website's review, I think it's aluminium (or some other metal) coating on plastic yawn.gif

that's marketing yawn.gif
getting more income from early adopters.

furmark burn-in maximum gpu temp 69C. 630 points FHD.
used 'ahem' version of aida 64 to stress the rocessory, around 80C.
not sure my why my computer cannot launch gpu-z after choosing it to launch in portable mode.

guys, like to thank you all for the feedbacks. It help me a lot, but i still got a few question to ask.

1. since this is using ivybridge, it should have the integrated intel hd graphics 4000, correct? (or it is disabled?)

2. does it support auto switching between AMD Radeon™ HD 7730M DDR3 2GB? (eg: intel hd4000 when normal usage, kick start ATI Radeon when playing games?)

3. how does the wireless display (widi) works for this model? seems like I can't find any widi compatible router at my place (I'm in penang)

I'm pretty particular about sound quality - im no expert or an audiophile by any means... but i appreciate a good sound...

Because the speakers are located under the laptop (not directly under of course), the sound reflects of the surface you are putting your laptop on and you can sense that little bit of echo-ish sound to it and sometimes it sounds muffled.

I see.well, better go with what JBL has to offer for the Y480/580 then.

A simple 2.1 would suffice.

Before this I was using the Acer 6920G with 'Dolby' sound system and I must say apart from the minor crackling sound after 4 years... its actually pretty damn good.

hi all,
I was looking for review on Dell Inspiron 15R Special Edition and I found this website, would
guys, like to thank you all for the feedbacks.

*
I'm wondering about this as well. How do I change to the HD 7730M? I went to dxdiag at it says HD4000.

Lol. My opinion is that you should demand a new set instead of fixing it. Not even a day and it spoil adi. Like mine not even a week and its faulty and dell agree to change a new set for me biggrin.gif

Previously 15R SE is rm2999 during launch, rebate rm200 become rm2799. Then they sneakily remove the rebate and normal online price now become rm2799.
Current promo is MS Office Upgrade for RM99 (NP RM249), save another RM150 if you like to use licensed products biggrin.gif

What to do when competitor come out with good stuffs like Lenovo Y580 (GTX660M DDR5, 1TB HDD 7200rpm, Blueray combo drive @ RM3399), or HP dv6-7038tx (GT 650M DDR5, FHD, Blueray drive, price unknown yet, but I'm tempted drool.gif). I'm hoping to see the Insprion 17R SE in M'sia, that's another awesome machine imho.

But I see the 14R SE is also RM2799 now. RM2599 is for 14R (not the SE).

I did notice a RM50 increase in their 3 year warranty. Now RM349, previously RM299.

EPP 7% still can be use thumbup.gif

yup, i know tat.. well there are 2 version rite, one is a FHD rm3199 and another is a non FHD rm2799

the key diff is the Msata and FHD screen, and a saving of rm400

i was wondering if i could choose the non FHD version, but change the screen to a Fhd screen and upgrade the warranty with the rm400 saved by choosing the non FHD version

+ student discount applicable for tis purchase?

10/6 place order, ETA 22/6.
18/6 ETA updated to 25/6, send a email to them and complain too long, is more than half month(15days) to get the laptop reach.
As already quite annoy when the lenovo Y580 launch with 1st class GPU at price >3.5k right after 3 days i place order, there is nothing like this price in market b4 that if I am not mistaken.I include begging them to make it on 22/6 in the email...finally it reach at 22/6.

15.6 msata version

device kosong now 2 second to start up.
equip with master cooler U3....seems the legend of U3 is a lie,no different for temp test by hand during standby.
plug in HDD testing COD black ops, fan running with the sound zzz...as state in some forum this problem not solve even after dell technician change the fan.so no border.
very smooth on COD and lap works like easy job for it.
no cpuid and gpuz meter, no time. mayb next few weeks to upload.

F...ing what aluminium anodized back cover is bullshit.its juz a thicker plastic with paint.
keyboard like going to jump out....douing....can see the spring edi haha...joking....very lose...seriously.
therefore, build quality ---haiz...

the belkin bags looks nice, n i think compare with those cipla brand RM50/60 better to get this belkin bag.

gv me some time to propose test autocad, BF3 in nxt post.
thks for viewing.

you should take a snapshot of your keyboard and let us see what's the problem, I feel mine is acceptable:O

not sure if there'll be much positive effect by using laptop cooler, cause there's only one tiny vent below the compputer.

I think for the cover, it's a plastic with aluminium coating. With the computer switched off and put in aircond room, the part wit 'aluminium coating' feels colder, yoou can compare it easily at the touchpad part.

Guys. After reading all the pages. Is 15r SE really that terrible? (Bsod, bad speakers, plasticky build, etc.) kinda attractive to me for the specs. i game a lot with the old babe 3670 on my sxps16, not the new games though. So am wondering which one is better 15r or 14r better for gaming? Looks like 640 has better performance but only 15r (which only comes with 7730) comes with FHD. Does 14r have FHD? Was thinking about n56 but the comments on their sales service is kinda pulling me off the deal with Asus. A lot of doubts. Wanted to change new lappy so badly man. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks. notworthy.gif
Edit: the games i played are usually like CoD and BF3 (cant even play bf3 on my lappy, played on friend's desk)
