Superlux Fan Club's First Thread!

user posted image

Who is Superlux?

The story started 60 years ago: Pan Chien-Yeu’s father built China’s first condenser microphone for his radio station after studying in Germany. Pan learned from his father and graduated with BSEE from Chau-Ton University. Pan has 45 years of electroacoustics professional design experience. It was 26 years ago that David Liu started to manufacture microphones. When David and Pan met in 1996, the best design and hands-on experience and the best quality mass production collaborated.

Together with all kinds of talents: mechanical , electrical , material , work-in-process, administration, computer science, RF engineering, visual communications, sales, . . . A team of determined people works around the clock, and after years of efforts, here we have created the products for the audio industry with the best sound performance from and the reasonable price - Superlux - products that let you play your music without overloading your budget . For OEM customer, Goang Fann provides from design to manufacturing services to meet the demands, from name brands to customized contracting installation projects.

True sound is the real value of Superlux products. Reasonable price is vital not only for budget limits, but also important for competitive business operations. Industry standards are the guidelines to Superlux from design to products. Discipline to follow the standards sets a strong foundation. We value your music, your sound, and your business. When you choose Superlux products, you can just play your music. There are no burdens to your sound quality, no burdens to your financial considerations.

We love music, we enjoy listening, and we are proud to be part of music creation. More music, more fun.

Modifications
Many thanks to iamyuanwu for collecting these mods articles.

Tissue mod (Timar from Head-fi) for comfort (and slight bass improvement):
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/485039...15#post_6686675

Earfonia Foam removal mod (Audiophile-Indonesia forum):
Remove the foam covering the driver to increase aggressiveness & detail. I have no idea what that dude is saying most of the time. You could replace it with baby wipes or pantyhose. Keep the sticker, don't remove it.
http://www.audiophile-id.com/index.php?top...22599#msg222599

Heliharris mod (Rockgrotto forum)---aluminium ring and end cap mod for HD681. I guess it would work for 668B too. I just loaded the 668B with a LOT of blu-tac.
http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?...iew&thread=5378
http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?...4559&post=57092

PinkFloyd's 4 Pence mod (variations: 4 Euro mod, RM0.40 sen mod, SGD 1 dollar mod). For "sweeter highs and have others have said, more air around instruments. Bass seems a litte tighter [...]"
http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?...4769&post=59472
I just used a knife tip to pop off the Superlux logo cap, applied some paper glue onto a 20 sen coin (I don't want to make it permanent yet), stick it onto the end cap with a tape over it to prevent it from falling out. Perhaps slightly less boomy bass, I guess. You could use blu-tac to stick the coin instead of some permanent glue.

Clausdk fish tank filter wool mod For crazy details in HD681. I will try later with cotton or whatever I can find at home. I used cotton, which reduced the bass to zero. I removed them.

thanks bro. I posted that because most people thinks that superlux just yet another china cap ayam cheap headphones that imitate branded designs.

I felt their really did their part in the driver design and etc. It doesnt matter you are listening to the music through some super expensive branded setup or just a cheap setup. What is important is you yourself enjoying your fav music and the soul in it. With superlux, ppl with tight budget can now enjoy music too. Audio shouldnt be limited to ppl with all the money to spend on high end stuff only.

I think alot of ppl spend too much time and money over analying audio instead of enjoying it.

Is the HD330 better than HD668b?
I'm rather confused by the numbering of the models and their price point. rclxub.gif

If I'm going to try a new headphone model, and especially in the budget end, I might as well go for the most expensive on offer. tongue.gif

How come no HD330 list?

HD668B & HD660 owner.

I'm now wondering the HD669 and HD330. No more budget to try them all. Aand I'm not interested in owning so many headphones, I've only got a pair of ears.

If someone buys them, lets have a TT session and audition. nod.gif

Hahaha I am selling off my 660 because of the reason you stated. Too many headphones and too little money. Need get back some cash to fund for 330. I need to test each headphones so I can recommend to fellow forumers biggrin.gif but it is very costly doing so. cry.gif and wasteful since I only have a pair of ears.

Nice bro! thanks for sharing. Actually 651 not that bad you know. But I am not a basshead. So...too bad. But its very light and portable la. And comparing bass sq and price range, its much better than those sonic gear and etc.

Bro Trio, I think the list of users no need spoilers, kinda redundant to click it to see oh.
but as for the Models available maybe you can put in some pictures for each models and keep it under spoilers. Perhaps for now just those models that the users/fans here have reported to have. There may be other models owners later, so by then only put it in?

Thx for making this thread smile.gif

I'm still eyeing on HD531, DJ Headphones
Never had a DJ Headphones so would like to compare the quality..

I'm looking forward for a review of the HD330, and furthermore, a comparison between the HD330 and HD668b. biggrin.gif
I hope that can spare me the dilemma of choosing between both.

Yes, I stupidly did so. I didn't even dare to bring it out until it was almost over. You know lah, all sort of reactions... some good, some not-so-good. Some people with something to lose will sneer at it. I don't care: it's my wallet and my enjoyment. I feel 20% of the price for 80% of the performance is better than many other imported stuff.

Added on January 30, 2011, 11:46 amEh, anyone tried 662 yet?
Headfonia.com's preview mentioned that it has "a crystal clear treble that’s even clearer than the 668B and good soundstage."

I am so tempted again.

Yeah....
I see lots of my friends resort to headsets by them Logitechs and stuff. Seriously hollow sounding. And they can cost more than the Superlux.

If I can show a Superlux to them, I'm sure they can never look at any other again for a budget headphone solution.

Yeah but the model like the HD651, and the HD681 is cheaper than what they got for their headsets. I don't think I've ever seen them using the mic on them. I think if they know, they might regret buying the headsets in the first place. tongue.gif

I dunno how an amp got into the mix of my to buy list, wasn't planning on one. laugh.gif It seems however that my IEM/headphone in my wishlist may benefit from amping.

Just asking, how come HD 668B is the most well known model of superlux headphones, and also HD681. I seem to cant find much reviews about the HD330 but the HD381 has good reviews. Anyone got a link to the HD330 review?

The review on it states that it can power 3 full sized cans......pretty amazing for an amp that uses only 2 AA batteries.

That amp is made from steel (or is it aluminium?). It's built like a tank.

IIRC, when I bought my 668B in Instraco... the 681 series were plugged into the HA3D amp. Didn't manage to try it. But it does look pretty much indestructible. I think it will break a toe if dropped on someone's foot. LOL!

I remember the old Xbox has a warning issued to the user. Something like, "falling of the unit can cause injury or death to infants".
Maybe the amp should have that. laugh.gif

It's probably because it sounds good for it's price.. as for the HD330 I guess you can wait for our fellow LYN members to receive their HD330 units then I'm sure they'll write a review of the headphone. I can't seem to find reviews for the HD330 either.

After supporting 3 superlux model, i think i need to sabotage abit.
Wahahaha~

All people here must try Samson SR850 headphone too (will bring along if someone organize TT), it use the same driver from Superlux as the HD668b (from reviews), but i never tried the superlux version.
(also Superlux priced cheaper)

And YES, i like my Samson model so much that by knowing it uses Superlux Sound Driver so that i have confidence on Superlux sound and buy 3 units straight without Audition.

No, i believe only Samson SR850 reference headphone. Maybe because Samson sr850 is using the driver supplied by Superlux.
There are other Samson headphones, not sure if they use superlux... but mostly more suitable for studio monitoring purpose.

1 special thing is the control these IEM has, some music swirf from left to right, something like left music right silent right music left silent, these 1 not many IEMs can do a proper without distortion, this IEM can do it while with background rock music.

try Nickelback- Rockstar, listen to the detail. simply amazing =p

Would be good if there's HD668b vs HD681 vs HD330 vs HD660

Then the person who writes the review has to know what he's writing to avoid any confusion and to attract prospective buyers instead nod.gif
Isn't that the whole purpose of a review/comparison?

Seriously, better not in Jaben, eventhough i like that place. They don't carry Superlux products, then whole gang of Superlux users go there to TT but tak beli barang... they also need to do business, dont disturb them lah. And the owners a bit not syok with Superlux.

Unless they are having TT, and only a few of us go, then ok lah. Try open a tread in Headjam and see the reaction.

TT probably after CNY. Some where central and slightly quieter. Maybe that food court next to Times book store in The Gardens.

Superlux product is serious competitor to some branded stuff. If you genuinely wanna buy amp (expensive one, not fiio) from jaben of course can go there and try it out.

Not anytime soon. My supplier on leave till next week. And I have exam then till one week later. By that time, 668b, 330, 681f, 681b should arrived d. Oh btw 662/662f/662b around the price of 681 and 668 and 669 slightly more expensive than 668b.

for basshead, 651. but do read the review first. Coz for me the bass is overwhelming but then again I am not a basshead. It got me headbanging session with paramore. rclxm9.gif

681 bass is just slightly more powerful than 668b only. Since u got 668b u should know how 681 bass sounds like d. Its the same tight bass just slightly stronger. But with proper setup, the bass will be stronger

*
I would look forward to hearing reviews of 662 and 669. Someone please buy them bring to TT. Then I can decide whether to sell my current ones to buy them. Hah hah!

Happy Chinese New Year to all Chinese!
And Have An AWESOME Holidays to everyone!

Don't ter-poison your relatives when you let them hear your Superlux. Hah hah!
Lets TT after CNY.

guys, would it be good for me to buy HD668B to plug into my laptop or my soon-to-be Samsung Galaxy S phone? i'm more towards clarity than bass, and i'm listening to all kinds music. smile.gif or issit HD681 enough already?

and oh, i'm using spectacles, would the headphone fits comfortably without pressing my ear towards the spec frame? it's quite painful you know cry.gif

Here's the only thing I understand about impedance.
Higher impedance, require higher voltage but lower current, and has less volume.

i believe 668b's lower impedence has it's own advantage too. Because it can both be power directly via standard pmp and also with added amp it would gain much better sound quality. Even thou with the low impedence.

thats true, i pair with my gumstick is already good sounding now
a good combination i would say
for me i dun like messy amp source, just don't like too many devices, kinda messy for me (just my preference, may not be for others)
that's why im still soul searching for a player that both my players features (bluetooth and gumstick Flac powah) so i can stick to just 1 player
but the seller so dam slow to reply even tho i already asked 3 times, it's like he's not gonna answer me soon
slow seller i would say even though he's online! mad.gif

Yea, they probably have the same driver, bro camrycilver posted the specs back in #231. The 330 is semi-open whereas the 660 is closed back so they shouldn't sound the same. I reckon one will be more airy while the other is 'tight'.

Hello guys...I am thinking on grabbing those HD381. drool.gif From the review its mentioned it poorly built quality. Anybody who have the HD381 could share his/her personnel opinion on the build quality. hmm.gif

And regarding the SQ, if compare HD381 with Hippo Grove or Sound Magic PL20 or PL21. hmm.gif any one who have these could share some thought.

Thanks. rclxms.gif

Mods available to stretch the RM130 further:

Tissue mod (Timar from Head-fi) for comfort (and slight bass improvement):
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/485039...15#post_6686675

Earfonia Foam removal mod (Audiophile-Indonesia forum):
Remove the foam covering the driver to increase aggressiveness & detail. I have no idea what that dude is saying most of the time. You could replace it with baby wipes or pantyhose. Keep the sticker, don't remove it.

Introducing, the "iamyuanwu-rojak-mod":
- tissue mod
- dual entry
- blu-tac
- 1-sen coin
- socks mod

Improvements... I tak tau lah. Perhaps you wanna try during TT?
I suggest TT/yamcha on 27 FEB, Sunday 11am in the food court next to Times Bookstore (highest floor in MV Gardens).
(if you know other quieter locations, please suggest =)

For those interested in how to open up the 668B...

user posted image
Pop the cap open from the top (12 o'clock position) with the tip of a blade/knife. There's a tiny space beneath the cap at 12 o'clock position.

*Notice that the 2 earpieces are wide apart. I've applied some elbow grease to reduce the death clamp.

To access beyond this part, you need to cut the [original] wires (and preferably mod it to dual entry). Modding it to dual entry will make future modifications easier.

I also added blu-tac into this space. Rockgrotto forummers replace the outer cover (the one on the bottom right) with an aluminium one to add weight. Well, I can't DIY my own aluminium cover, so I'll have to make do with Blu-Tac.

The blu-tac is to increase the weight/inertia of the driver... supposedly to help reduce boom and tightens up everything. YMMV.
But the Blu-Tac will absorb A LOT of bass. So the 1 sen coin is added.

Hate that faux-leather polyester crap earpads that make you sweaty?
Cut up a pair of sock and put it over the earpads. Use the tissue mod to keep the socks in place.
I've never felt sweaty or my ears feel stuffy after wearing for long hours.

I'm simply bored, so I went on reading and translating the said reviews. First off, I'm not familiar to indonesian so I merely translated it from my knowledge of malay. Thereby my translation might have a slightly (or totally) different meaning from the original text. Hope it helps.

P/s: He in my text refers to the original poster, while I is me. I might have mixed them up at times though. Sorry for any confusion.

Nice write up
seems 669 and 668B quite same except for the semi-open/closed design
now i'd say 662 isinteresting, possibly becos of the 'just nice' 32ohm needed, something to think about too
nice review and translation thumbup.gif

Interesting, I think I'll order the HD381 to give my opinion on the matter. I highly doubt, given the price of the HD381, that they can sound on par or better than those more expensive high end universal IEM's. I'll be glad to be proven wrong though wink.gif

Just get my Superlux HD381F (about 25 hours burn-in), the sound remind me of Hippo Ten. The low, mid and high just sound natural. Bass is deep, smooth vocal, and have enough detail. Sound quality wise, it is nothing to complain. So relaxing when listen to them. The semi open design make it wont sound that 'in the head' like normal closed iem. Although it look cheap but don't sound cheap at all. Its fit well and comfortable. Easy to drive too.

tongue.gif Just my two cents, as a newbie in audiophile field.

hmm.gif Whether its comparable to those big company like SHURE, UE, WESTONE or not, I really dont know because I cant afford them and only have brief listen to them before at Jaben. But, this Superlux iem definitely wont sound like <RM100 iem cool.gif .

Why being so harsh/offensive towards the review? All reviews in this world are personal opinions. Of course expensive iem have pros than make it worth its money but like every product types out there, there will be some small company selling cheap products that have COMPARABLE quality (note the word comparable and not better?) to the expensive counterparts. They managed to make it cheap because they have lesser overheads such as maintaining big design, r & d, marketing and etc expenses.

"Comparable"
seriously, i personally own a few multiple drivers IEM and i tried Superlux before, i dont really conclude they are "comparable".

as you mentioned, they spend alot of money on R&D as well, the multiple driver crossover, drivers positioning, the sound tuning, the major refinement , the final micro details tuning of Balance armature driver, all of them are spending money on this part, thats why are they can provide this type of sounding.

marketing?
i dont really see big brand such as westone, ortofon, final audio, earsonic advertise in magazines, billboard, MV compare with monster product

comparable means on par.
so with cheaper in price for more then 10 times can compare with them?

i hope ppl shouldnt post misleading guide

just my 2 cents and opinion

cool bro, we hear your opinion as well and well taken into considerations smile.gif
Yeah some reviews are biased sometimes, while some are not. We can be sure that the reviews will not be 100% accurate all the time, but also from there we can get an idea of the comparisons. It is true that only when someones (with enough $$) is able to get the high ends and compare, prolly may have a more accurate comparisons on them. Plus, a good comparison means you have the stocks in your hands, not by 'remember how it sounds previously'. In the end, sound is a subjective matter.

I myself have not tried the really high ends so I can't pretend that i do smile.gif
Still, it's a good way of sharing experiences and info. Some are really happy as well

Even though not comparable to the high end ones, it's still is a good buy for its price thumbup.gif

Cheers ya icon_rolleyes.gif

The 20/80 Rule bro. 20% of the price, for 80% of the performance.
Superlux are not comparable in every way to higher end products. But under favourable situations, they can come pretty close. And they certainly are very enjoyable. So, I am curious... why do you find that offensive?

And the rule of diminishing returns: To get more performance, both the consumer and the manufacturer wi'll have to pay an escalating price for it. To squeeze the last 10% of performance, they have to spend 90% of the cost to refine the product, get more exotic parts, pay for specialised service, pay for expensive human resource, promote/market the product like crazy, etc... So it is not surprising that Superlux is comparable in certain areas.
Besides, some guys here own both high end gears and cheap Superlux cans... and they just wanna compare for personal reasons: and is that of any serious consequences to you?

And who says big brands like Westone, Final Audio, Earsonic don't spend big budget on marketing? They don't advertise in local magazines doesn't mean they don't promote their products using other means (e.g. sponsorship, forums, paying for artists as ambassadors, sending review units, etc). Probably less than Monster, but still huge amounts of money.

This Cube C30 is equipped with BBE technology which is even used in high end Cowon players. I guess it can bring 668B to a higher level. longer battery life, much cheaper price somemore =)

Sflo2 has real nice SQ, but the battery really drain like hell, cant even last 10 hours have to charge everyday. have to sacrifice battery life for good SQ sweat.gif

anyway if u're interested i can bring in Sflo2 for u too. special price for u since u were the one who bring in superlux stuff for us. Regretted not buying the 3 packs of IEM from u last time when u offer promotional bundle price. 381F really give me 668B feel wub.gif

The S:Flo2 is great for pairing up with anything. They're flat response means you can tune the sound by using different IEM/headphone, according to your liking. biggrin.gif

After getting the hd681 and compare it to my hippo vb,I think I will never buy an iem in the future.
I know we can't compare them since they are 2 completely different thing, but the performance they deliver with their price has such a huge difference. The vb sound lifeless compare to the hd681 IMHO.

Anyway I m just a noob in audiophile world and this is just my 2cent smile.gif

I would describe 381F as tight and punchy. bigger bass than 668B and sufficient to my ear. but 668B's bass is a different surround effect bass, different feel. great for me too. =) just like how it compare to 681 which has bigger bass but i feel 668B simply sounds nicer n smoother.

another thing is Cube C30 has better firmware update whereas for gumstick u cant really find any official firmware update on their official website. sweat.gif

I was waiting.. for a decision on the colour! tongue.gif Will post at your bulk thread soon. biggrin.gif

I gave up on gumstick due to the price and the fact that I just want to try some other IEM. Then came along your offer, which 'fixes' both of the reason why I didn't get a gumstick in the first place. thumbup.gif

I was aiming for 381, but for a guy whose only IEM is Sony's stock HPM-77, Cube F1 might do good for now. Besides, I'm gonna get my 668B soon. laugh.gif

Guys, are you all interested in Superlux club TT on 27th Feb, Sun... around noon in MidValley Garden's food court? It's the only weekend I'm off work.

Those who wanna try out some of the headphones/earphones can come try out, owners can come discuss mods or what DAC/players have good synergy with the cans, can bring other brands to do some simple comparisons (no thrashing other brands obviously), etc...
I could open up my headphones for others to look around inside. I also wanna find out if anyone is interested in modding their Superlux.

Oh, someone please bring a pair of PcWork recabled KSC75. Wanna try it, Superlux ain't that portable.

1. iamyuanwu - whatever little bit of gear I have.

Yes, yes I am. laugh.gif I cancelled my order but went back and order again. laugh.gif
I don't have any IEM/headphone that is neutral though, so all I can do is tell you which one(Gumstick or C30) makes my IEM sound like what, the best to my abilities that is. tongue.gif

grado would be a better choice for rock music lover..guitar distortion sounds very engaging. you cannot go wrong with grado for rock music, unless you cannot stand the comfort, which for some people the earpad does not really feel comfortable

Try this. It's a repost from the Superlux thread by iamyuanwu (link):

Tissue mod (Timar from Head-fi) for comfort (and slight bass improvement):
http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/485039...15#post_6686675

Earfonia Foam removal mod (Audiophile-Indonesia forum):
Remove the foam covering the driver to increase aggressiveness & detail. I have no idea what that dude is saying most of the time.
http://www.audiophile-id.com/index.php?top...22599#msg222599

Heliharris mod (Rockgrotto forum)---aluminium ring and end cap mod for HD681. I guess it would work for 668B too.
http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?...iew&thread=5378
http://rockgrotto.proboards.com/index.cgi?...4559&post=57092

Clausdk fish tank filter wool mod For crazy details in HD681. I will try later with cotton or whatever I can find at home.

i have a doubt if you plan on using the superlux for gaming.. it kinda lack those kinda "boomy" bass which might not be as awesome if you like playing war games with lotsa "boom" and "pow"

on the PC .. it works just fine, after all majority of the forumer's main source is the PC since most of our music collection is obviously *ahem* and are stored in the HDD tongue.gif . also the superlux is a monitoring headphone, in other words; its meant for music.

That's unfortunate.. Though I'm not keen on bass. I'm more inclined towards crisp clear voices..
How does it perform when used for movie watching?

That's exactly what the Superlux 668B can give you: crisp clear voices.

For gaming, you might need very wide sound stage (depending on how fussy you are, and what type of games you're playing). Superlux is not too bad in this sense. It will serve you well.

well i only mentioned about the bass being not boomy enough for games.. but its just right for music also accompanied by crispy clear vocals and sparkly high range.
movies.. its kinda hard as well. if you dont mind the lack of boomy THX/DOLBY style explosion effects then it should be fine.

however i think the 681 might work for you.. ive not tested it on movies but its slighly bassier as compared to 668b
*edit* better availability and cheaper too XD

How does the 668B and 681 compare to the sennheiser HD202?
Coz that was my first choice until I "stumbled" into this thread, if the superluxes are better then there's no more reason to think on it considering the price.

superlux pwns in music.
hd202 is better in movies and games since it has more bass.
the choice is in the end up to you as which is the field youd be using your headphones more often
( but its hard to go wrong with the price superlux offers biggrin.gif)

It's too late now, already ordered a 681 from Trio. wink.gif
Now to contemplate getting a sound card to go with it.

any mod to address the high issues? in-line filter or some sort..
the mod shown in the link is quite advance for me.

front panel? u mean of your desktop?
in that case better use behind one or direct to the sound card
btw HD660 need to drive using better source i think as it has higher impedance, 150Ohm. Only then you can get better results smile.gif

yup my dekstop.
higher impedance.. hmm I'm only using it for my PC

i chose 660 only because of the outside noise isolation tongue.gif

After browsing few websites about bass distortion/clipping now I seem to know what my problem was biggrin.gif

Any owners of HD330 would like to comment on the sound?
Nevermind...I think the 668B is for me. Just a question of when I'm ready. tongue.gif

Bro, they say that the HD330 and HD660 is the same, it's just that the HD330 is semi-open while HD660 is closed

They look (at least in paper) that they would suit my soon to come HM-601. tongue.gif

Then again, I would have to consider the RE0 into my budget. That could hurt my chances of getting the 668B.

Yes, or Hifiman RE0. smile.gif
But it is twice as expensive, but would pair very well with the 601, as they are from the same company, and the 601's treble roll-off would mean a bright sounding output would suit it quite well.

Because of the price tag, I'm more and more inclined towards the 668B, but because the RE0 is an IEM, it appeals to me more on that front.

For now, I'm waiting for my Radius DDM which is being sent for warranty, and my HM-601 from Jaben. The DDM 'should' sound very dark as it too has a bit of a treble roll off. So right now searching for a headphone or IEM(preferably IEM) that is a bit brighter and airier than the DDM.

Also buying a C30, which should arrive in around 2 weeks. Planning on using that as my ultra-portable rig, for jogging and stuff. tongue.gif So and IEM would be great, but I really really really really really would like to know what a good headphone sound like.

So much going on for me this year. laugh.gif

wow radius DDM.. that one sounded pretty on par with ie8 if im not mistaken (only heard them for a few minutes and they're not burned in)

well..its not really hard to own a 668b because of its price tag but as for RE0.. i dont know :/ some reason i dont really like it eventhough im a detail lover (i felt the highs doesnt sustain long enough.. it disappears a little to quick) i ended up getting a shroom EB (which i find much more natural sounding) while waiting for ETY's ER4S to arrive laugh.gif

The bass on that thing is the best I've heard so far. Plus, organic instruments and male vocals sound oh so sweet. biggrin.gif

I've already PM'ed trio regarding the 668B. We'll see how the DDM fairs with the 601 first. If I feel they are way too dark and the treble makes me feel wanting to put my hands in the music and pull them out, then the 668B will have the green light. laugh.gif

lots of Blu-tac = zero bass... don't try this at home, kids.

Previously I modded 668B... very satisfied with the results. Dah entah berapa bulan dah, I still have not gotten the AKG k240's velour pads. sweat.gif

normally coz of superlux driver range can go very high and very low, ppl tends to dislike the extreme high end of the spectrum that cannot be heard previously with other headphone.

but with 681, that shouldnt be the case. so maybe your setup not sync with 681 or they are bright.

hihi, just wanna to share the opinion,
as XSI mentioned, the sharp is much for him int he treble.
extreme high end spectrum actually dont provide " treble is too harsh ", it is the tuning part they can perform, how well the handle on that part, high end cans provide controllable and nice gripping on the extension on treble, with the borderline of reaching sharp/harsh, if 681 providing this type of sounding, it's considering a bright headphone will less control on the treble part, with the enhance power by the E9 amplifier, it will amplify the treble even more sharper.

the reason i said those because 681 is not a bright headphone. andd my first paragraph is not referring to his prob. just merely stating that alot ppl misunderstood in that way.

fyi, alot of ppl regard bright headphone as harsh because they do not like/able to stand the brightness. Eg 668b

Oh yeah, 668B is bright indeed... they way I like it. But it is in no way harsh.

And 681 will take some time to burn in (a few hundred hours to tame it down).

Finish burning, then do the Frans Filter mod to reduce the treble if you still find it too bright.

However I tried using the Maverick D1 tube out to my secret amp then hooking it up to my 668B, it seems to have "calmed" the harshesness thanks to the tube's darkness. Might be worth a try with the 681 as well.

Yes, i love the details too.. Especially when playing dark blues/jazz songs. Its outperforms my IE8 as it is simply too dark. Also, it's soundstage wins over by a huge margin. However, singers such as Olivia/Fish Leong where their voice are crystal clear to begin with, sometimes will become a little too harsh esp. the highs....

Not the headphone's fault at all. It is just doing its job.
Many Chinese pop songs aren't recorded & mastered with great care, so they sound harsh.

And a lot of those artistes aren't actually that good a singer themselves. What you are hearing is their voice reaching the limits of their capability... especially some of Olivia Ong's songs. OMG! I totally can't even listen to it on 668B---everything is just wrong: sloppy pronunciation, weak voice, fake falsetto on the trebles, and a million other little details that annoy the sweet bejeezus out of me. How is it possible for her to ruin those great songs?

She's damn lucky her bossa nova songs are all superbly arranged and very good songs. Nasib baik I can still put her album on my parent's mediocre home system, where she sounds absolutely fine. sweat.gif

Not PcWork recabled version... sure kenot fight lah. PcWork Recabled KSC75 is damn geng leh. Donch pray-pray...

If anyone can still lurve Oliva after using 668B = deaf; lousy Engrand speaking; never heard a well recorded vocalist before; or hamsap lou. drool.gif
------
You guys must try Pop Pop Music's CDs (e.g. Love's Tapestry, 2V1G, jz8, Brasileiro, Pusaka) with Superlux. Their singers & musicians are superb talents recorded with audiophile quality, and mastered by good sound engineers. You will melt in a puddle of eargasm.
Some more help to support local audiophile talents.

That's probably the HD660. 660 is pretty widely used in the recording sector. Not surprising to see shoe string TV crews using HD660 or studios using them.

While I agree that Olivia's recording definately does not sound well on the 668B, I disagree that she's a poor singer. Recording might be badly done though. Her aldums sounds good on my Senns IE8 and Senn HD650 (when I tested it out in Jaben's).

But 668B definately does JZ8 justice while it was too dark for me Senn IE8.

Having said that, the 668B will corroborate what the 'real audiophiles' have been saying all along.... that Pavarotti must be a pretty lousy singer cos he got bad Englud pronounciation. Or maybe these 'real audiophiles' are just being delusional. whistling.gif

Having said that, the 668B will corroborate what the 'real audiophiles' have been saying all along.... that Pavarotti must be a pretty lousy singer cos he got bad Englud pronounciation. Or maybe these 'real audiophiles' are just being delusional.  whistling.gif

Agreed mate. I listen to English pieces by Yao Shi Ting as well. Even thought her England is not Powderful, I enjoyed her voice. The mispronounciations can be irritating at times, but hey, I mispronounce all the time.

OT a bit .... tongue.gif

You are absolutely correct. One of the very first songs of Yao Si Ting that I listened to was Vincent.

"Starry starry night paint your palette blue and grey
look out on a summer's day with eyes that know the
darkness in my soul.

Shadows on the hills sketch the trees and the daffodils
catch the breeze and the winter chills in colors on the snowy linen land.

And now I understand what you tried to say to me" <-- When I heard her sing those three words I instantly knew I had 'discovered' CLASS with a capital C! Just listen to her tone when she sang those three syllables! Brilliant! thumbup.gif

Superlux kenot leh... veli the digital sound.
Still lack certain refinement.

*but some already 'bueh syok liao'. Aiyoh... RM150 punyer barang, how to compare to 4-5 hundred or RM1.5k punya gear? Why so sked and closed minded?

(what I meant was: Superlux still lack some refinement that much more expensive earphones have, but why feel threatened? Different stroke for different folk. Different budget, different phones mah.)

Speaking of which... time for some Noryn Aziz eargasm.

I haven't listened for myself, but judging from what people are saying, for their price they do the job quite well. I say they're on the right track in bringing good audio for the masses. Only time will tell if they will continue and succeed.

well, it all depends on the person preference.
as for me, i find that my RM60 HD381F sound way better than my old Fischer Audio Eterna version 1(sold already), which got 5 star diamond award by ClieOS dude.
different people different opinion. and yeah, different budget too~

Superlux has been around for many years liao loh. Only recently has the consumer market start to take a notice at it.
They've been manufacturing inexpensive studio/recording mics, monitor speakers, amps, headphones for entah berapa lama dah. They haven't really cared much for the usual consumers... that's why its designs are usually caplang ones... hah hah! (And that's why it's still pretty affordable)

If Superlux made its stuff with as much care and flair as the big brands, we wouldn't be able to buy it at these rock bottom prices anymore.

they need only Rm100 plus to make sth of 80 to 90 percent performance of DT770. I think if they double the cost to RM300, they willl be able to make something almost 95 percent performance of HDHD650, K701 etc.

hard to say.. cuz to me only 681 and 668 sounded good, and the other products are rather average, some i couldnt even bear listening a few seconds.
both the 681 and 668 are like miracle products i would say tongue.gif but i wouldnt go kick the big shots in the leg as i dont think the performance is that high as we all think it is. the difference in performance is actually rather big after a little analytical listening. (mainly electro and percussion tracks as there's alot of "hidden" details)
but heck if you need a RM100 and not wanting bloated sounding cans then superlux is the way

*edit* oh yea.. and the tests is mainly on details level and not sense of taste

Yeah. Even for RM300 if it could match(or beat) the performance of say....Alessandro MS1i, it'll always be a bargain.

Or maybe they intentionally set their limits to those prices, see how far sound quality can be pushed within that price limit.

HD668 sounds somewhat near (slightly better) than DT770 right out of the box, without amplification.

Hmm I've tried the HD668 with amp(RSA Shadow), It sound decent for a headphone with that price, price vs performance is good, but the mids isn't there, treble is very sharp >.<, bass is quite muddy.......
However the DT770 with amp is a different story. Please bear in mind that Beyer DT770 is a 250ohm impedence phone, it cannot work properly without amping. So, comparing without amp is not fair, so is comparing a 150+ bucks stuff with a 1000bucks stuff is not fair either. If the price is neglegted, DT770 simply just smoked the superlux HD668. I'm not saying that HD668 is not good, it is very competent headphone that sits well in it's price. Very competitive priced product. Conclusion: DT770 vs HD668 = cannot compare XD Maybe similarly priced creative or razer headphones, superlux just owns them. But vs audiophile range stuff, they stil have a long way to go.
Just my 2 cents, no offence ya TQ

It is a great time to get it now since it is dirt cheap now thx to our good forumer despite the 'news' XD

Anyway, to future superlux owners and 'red-eyed' branded headphones fanboys, superlux cans are good. Their performance are well above their price but pls do not misunderstand and expect it to perform like a rm1000 headphones because it does not. This is only good for beginner in this hobby, or music lovers without budget, non enthusiastic. If you have the money or want something better, by all means you can go to get those really good audiophile level headphones. However, that being said, I still luv superlux! XD

wah my coming hd668 the mid isnt there, high too sharp and bass too muddy?? Isnt any better way to describe the sound other than these word.
I think that guy really got "red eyed".
you could just say they are different and you would prefer more established brand. But never quote something like that in the superlux fans club.

Yea, they do. HD650 is more warm I guess. I have not heard the 668B and I only recall what the HD650 sounds like based on memory but judging from what's posted here, it seems that the 668B is brighter than the HD650.

Hahaha... very true, 1 is bright, 1 is warm... that's why i said the fella bought an expensive headphone that's not suitable for his taste. Or... he just got bored with warm sounding, and turn to the bright side.

Don't WAR, Superlux is just a headphone... a cheapo one (this is a positive fact), we just need to enjoy the music. I own Beyerdynamic DT880 250ohm (which i like very much) and Samson SR850 (Same driver as Superlux 668B, also like very much)... every headphones somehow have different sounding, either you like it, if you don't like it, just buy other headphones.

Don't read too much reviews, listen it and judge yourself... if your ear tell you it's nice, then it's sure nice. tongue.gif

Don't read too much reviews, listen it and judge yourself... if your ear tell you it's nice, then it's sure nice. tongue.gif

Hahaha... very true, 1 is bright, 1 is warm... that's why i said the fella bought an expensive headphone that's not suitable for his taste. Or... he just got bored with warm sounding, and turn to the bright side.

No problem one. Just say it out, as long as you be casual about it (and hopefully the fans remain civil too).
Not everyone here is going to use Superlux forever. I certainly have the intention to upgrade in the future... waiting for money to drop from the sky nia... LOL!
