This is a must GPS application for Malaysian. It utilize malfreemaps. A FREE maps & most complete local map maker.

Find the download section. Look for latest Papago for android/iphone version.

Map update can be done via BOTH JB and non JB. the winrar/winzip method is for non JB

And for those have problem like error during installation,

Please,

1. Install first WITHOUT any modification (means original Papago maps)
2. Later you update the map using winrar.

As a precaution, do backup the original Papago maps so if anything goes horribly wrong, you can restore to original.

So far, i've tested Sygic on a friend's iphone and found it quite good. as for TomTom, the description given was that the Malaysian map is abt 54% covered only. Haven't tested it yet. Price wise, Sygic is USD79.99 while TomTom is USD59.99.

i'm waiting for Google Maps Navigation before i decide which i want to install on iPhone.

will it be lagging when trying to install in to the phone? i planing to get 1 as well but need to wait for the comment as well.. bcoz it is quiet expensive

I have Ndrive and my recommendation is not to use it. Since GPS is not cheap, get a better quality and pay more as 'poor man pay twice' maxim may be true.

Sometimes, I find that google maps may be clearer.

from my experience using TomTom.... if you're using it on the iPhone 3GS..try not to use it for too long...the phone gets rather hot.

Anyway, i've only tried TomTom and I like it.

Me too.... I just installed TomTom last Sunday.

Tested it at Penang and Alor Setar....so far, the GPS locking signal pretty fast (compared to Google map).
Although, the map is not updated...even in Penang island, but I still very happy to own this! Hopefully TomTom will come out with latest update in near future....


Ya....forgot to mention iPhone heat up quite fast while using TomTom and battery drains out pretty fast too! So, you should get yourself a car kit with charger, or iPhone battery will flat out after you reach your destination

ya, I live in penang too, so far haven't purchase any iphone GPS app yet, anyone try sygic? does Sygic heat up iPhone fast too?

So far I read about, sygic have really good update, custom POI, updated map, and fast to launch application, just not really good UI, and doesn't support iphone gesture.

tomtom seem good use of iphone gesture, the UI seem very friendly and nice too~ but not really updated map and bad review from ilounge, however, this could be fix via update.

i have 3 gps app Ndrive, Sygic and Tomtom... for map, all using the same map from Teleatlas. i vote for tomtom bcoz i can browse the map like google map

i've been struggling to get a decent signal using tomtom ever since i've gotten myself the gps app !

i manage only to get GPS signal in a second
when the sky is clear
which mean there is no cloud or whatsoever
only the blue sky

then is that tomtom is better compare to other. but the map is not update yet.. this is weakness

Most of the time I am getting Poor GPS Reception on Tomtom, I wonder if its related to window tinting blocking GPS signal?. If I use Garmin device then no problem.

i think it's bcoz garmin is dedicated for using GPS
iphone is not
the GPS chip i think is different

Tried using tomtom on my 3gs in Malacca. Managed to get me to where I wanted to go after quite a few wrong turnings due to the occasionally bad and slow reception...

It's actually very sad to say this but the Garmin on my last e71 is just way better. It's fast, accurate and definitely more reliable...

Btw, as some has experienced it before, the phone gets really hot after using the GPS for awhile and not to mentioned how fast it drains the battery...

Agree.. been using garmin mobile XT in s60 OS for quite a while d, garmin work like a charm.. especially the free map provide by the community of malsingmap in malaysia, very detail.

Just wondering will garmin actually develop a version for the iPhone.
anyway,tried google maps yesterday.works fine but just not as convenient as a voice navigation software.
Hopefully the google maps navigation will b available with the next update. Looks good from the online articles.

well currently sygic is updating I think...because a lot people is having the problem to connect..even me too..but the next day it's working pretty fine and good...

I couldn't get any GPS signal for Tom Tom. Current location in Penang.

Hi, all .. I noticed some people saying that they are taking a long time to lock on to their position.. in my case, I notice this.. I am on a JB'd phone and when i turn off EDGE, it seems to take longer to lock on to my position.. i think this could be due to AGPS being turned off as well..

I'm not sure if this is because of that.. for those of you not getting a signal at all, did you guys turn off Location services?

For me, i turned my location services ON. but it still wont lock no matter how long i wait outside clear skies. Is it true that we must turn on our edge to get a signal?

Just install GPS call "IGo My way", have 5 country in it- M'sia, P'pines, indonesia, HK and S'pore. But sadly signal not strong, hard to detect satellite and once detect satellite got disconnected!!! Any other GPS software you guyz can recommend?

Garmin got for iPhone but not GMXT like WM/nokia/sony phone... UI very ugly as the software uses IMG raw file.. i think they call it ImgOsm ... its custom made app, not official from Garmin

I am an iPod Touch 2G user which doesn't have built-in GPS chip. I purchased iGPS360 module from OrangeGadgets as well as TomTom's Malaysia/Singapore maps from iTunes.

Thus far, I'm satisfied with the external GPS performance since it is a dedicated (external) chip. It takes only seconds to get a location lock-in. Inside my office, signal is weak or doesn't exist (as expected). Under partial roof area, signals are detected which is good when driving inside the car cabin.

i've been trying to use tomtom...but it always shows weak gps signal although im outside a field...

Just now I've installed Sygic for Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand (190MB) and have to say it is equal, if not better, than TomTom.

Will continue to play around between Sygic and TomTom.

Interesting feature on Sygic found thus far:
- it has an option to enter longitude and latitude numbers (couldn't find this in TomTom), which is good since some smaller roads within my housing area is not captured in the map

- it allows route simulation in real-time, meaning after you have set your origin and destination but haven't departed yet, you can run a second-by-second simulation of the proposed route complete with all relevant POIs & intersections that you will see throughout the journey, which is pretty nice if you want to get used to the route before starting the actual journey

I have all 3 but to me Tom Tom 1.2 is pretty good - Ndrive is the worse so far

i had the same experience. I tried following method and it will get the GPS signal pretty fast.

On your EDGE and 3G, tap to open TomTom and you will get the GPS signal.

Once done, disabled EDGE and 3G.

I bought Ndrive and I think it is pretty useless as it fails at important intersections.

Now I am afraid to throw in the money for another GPS apps as I am afraid their performance will be mediocre.

Seen a dedicated GPS at work and I must say that Ndrive pales terribly in comparison.

Correct me if I am wrong; iPhone 3GS and 3G only comes with Assisted GPS which means it utilises GPRS, Edge or 3G connection to detect the signals from the transmission towers and lock your position based on the signals they received from the tower. It does not directly utilises the satellites. It only gives an estimation on your position based on the positions of the towers. Thus, it is faster to lock and are able to use it indoor. Conclusion, fast locking, can use indoor but not accurate.

Unlike the Standalone GPS, it fully utilises the positions of the satellites directly to lock your position. Thus it will take a longer time to locked. It also not able to function indoor. Conclusion, slow locking, cannot use indoor but accurate.

Some models like HTC Touch Pro uses both. Thus, when the Standalone GPS cannot lock your position, it will utilise the A-GPS

Added on December 18, 2009, 10:46 pmI never tried any of these; but I have tried Garmin in Sabah and found that its good. I have also tried the Google Maps and found that Garmin is still better as the map is more complete and no need GPRS, Edge or 3G connections to open the map.

However, iphone is using only A-GPS and this will make all these maps not so accurate especially in Sabah where the telecommunication towers are weaker.

tomtom is nice, but I think Sygic really listen to their customer, and alway have updates, recently update to whole new application that have gesture feature, after complain from customer because of lack gesture

i believe iPhone3G and iPhone3GS both got A-GPS chip utilising satellite, alongside cellular and wifi signal. the assisted part is for faster lock when location-aware app is launched, before the satellites can give the exact location. so nope, iPhone 3G and 3GS can also get its location via GPS satellite. the one that doesn't have that feature is the original iPhone (can only determine its location via cellular and wifi signals)

btw, some GPS makers such as TomTom also already made their own GPS cradle to be used with iPhone 3G & iPhone 3GS, also can be used with iPod Touch. it features GPS chip built into the cradle that can improve the GPS signal receiving.

Garmin for winmo works great..i've been using it on my X1 for trips to Melaka, Ipoh and Cameron Highlands recently.. works great with free maps from malfreemaps.. even in town roads and directions are clear... if only Garmin is available for iphone it'll be perfect.. great UI and OS with good gps navi software...

The taiwanese version even comes with 3D landmark and lane assist as well. Now, this is more like dedicated standalone GPS.





No clue to date if they will ever release any Malaysian version. If yes, we might have a chance to use local mapper's version of Papago map. Considering that their standalone GPS already integrated with MFM maps it will be great if the same can be bundle with the apps. Tomtom and sygic won't stand a chance in terms of POI.

i would say tat tom tom,sygic,ndrive and igoway gps could not really make my day in penang,...seems like penang maps is outdated there..i cant even find my own house street inside...but for garmin...it has my house street lol...

I believe it's true that a great GPS nav apps should be accompanied by detailed and complete waypoints and road networks. That being said, garmin obviously stand out here probably not because it is the best nav out there but due to the fact it has extensive map coverage courtesy of MSM officially and even MFM unofficially.

But the UI, auto-reroute duration, etc does play some role as well in determining which is the best. Consider that if Tomtom for example having an equally map database with garmin, then it might be spoiled for choice

I've tried sygic and tomtom. personally i think they are complicated to operate. google map works best for me

How is tomtom complicated? if anything, tomtom is the most user friendly gps ive used so far. press navigate to, choose where you want to go, and voila!

Papago just launched the Papago Taiwan M6.. which can use MFM map ..!! its only USD9.90 from itunes.
Damn nice and sure better than iGO, TomTom, Sygic.. MFM is the best !!

yup .. MFM which using Papago Taiwan M6 app!! But, Its still contain alot of bug and not stable .. and not recommend to buy it now!!..
And, I think it will work well later ...

Added on January 12, 2010, 9:45 amThis is something that I don't have any conclusion as yet. Some says iphone do have GPS and even come up with image of GPS/A-GPS chipset. some says only A-GPS.

What I do suspect, Google maps in iPhone uses AGPS/tower triangulation only, because it's very not accurate. Plus, Gmaps in iPhone doesn't have the "Use GPS" function like in other phone with confirmed GPS.

While some said that iPhone has GPS receiver, they believe that the receiver is too weak compared to other type of GPS phone. This might be supported by the fact that TomTom provide GPS receiver in their kit as well

So, can I conclude that to those who wish to buy iPhone thinking that it can also function as a GPS turn to turn guiding device, just hold back first? As I saw many of my friend who using HTC are very happy with the GPS function. Me myself is an iPhone user, and feel very frust and disapointed as this GPS function does not really perform...

If you ask me, you have to confirm with those who is using Tomtom or Sygic. I'm not in the position to give that answer as I'm still monitoring which navigator is the best and the most stable.

I'm looking forward to the Papago..considering that malaysian mappers has already compiled maps in Papago format. And yes as an omnian, the garmin in omnia is more than satisfying.

I just don't want the iphone goes bare like that without any proper navigation apps, hence lurking here for the best navigator

Was driving towards KL Sentral and somehow i could appear on a road beside me which is 50 - 100 ft away on the map? response time = hopeless . Garmin GPS on Nokia S60v3 was a lot better..

I wont be suprised that more ppl will be frustrated with TomTom..Even me myself cant stand the ineffectiveness of this software as it always goes out of bound and takes ages to reroute ! and i tried the navigation from 1U to Ampang, if i really depended on tomtom to lead the way, i think i'll forever stucked on the road as it kept showing that i was out of bound although i was on the path it showed ! not to mention how many times it rerouted eventhough i was on the correct path !

I'm having a problem with that GPS. When i'm in my house. It cant detect the proper location that i having. Is that all the same?

Yes it is. GPS can't detect in a building sometimes. But somehow my room has the "weird zone" where i can get 3G and GPS connection but other parts of my room i can't

It's already using MfM..expect absolutely updated POI! and even updateable weekly! This will trump the other two contenders easily.

Definitely will be the most updated map of all other GPS app in Malaysia, anyone tried to use it already? UI and map drawing seem not pretty as compare to tomtom(especially the font), but I prefer more updated map than this, AND VERY CHEAP! (compare to tomtom and sygic), can anyone post up the review?

I saw there is another navigator which is priced USD 139.99... How good is that? Please feedback at popogo as it seems to be a bargain and is using mfm...

plz check before you get..it must support asia/asean maps.....if not try other reputated gps...like sygic..or tom tom..

i believe it'll have the most updated map weekly only if only iphone is JBed..then you can update by yourself. cause any map update in itunes must obviously get the apple permission.so the non JBed one will have map update only when maction update the apps version.

BTW, I'll love papago more than others not only due to localised map, but due to JV function which is veryyy crucial

yup... but if u buy the taiwan version and change to MFM, u only got the junction view without 3D building landmark...it's jz the time matter

the taiwan version only comes with mandarin interface but there is english voice navigation that u can choose.

How to update the tomtom map byself or through itunes?

I think that wats important in a gps map is the locale map completeness and in this case, papago give me an edge interms of malfreemaps. So, i think i'll choose papago pro compared to tomtom

yea..MFM+junction view with iphone is almost perfect in the iphone navigator in malaysia use ,but somehow the Papago is like almost completely taken from the X5 android version and it's not so iphone-ish interface, which make it like hmmmm

I bought it yesterday, it came with jun09 MFM map, My iphone is JB so i upgraded dec30 MFM Map but the latest MFM Jan01 map is not working, no idea what was wrong, generally it work ok but still not as good as in Windows mobile version and the interface is the worst compared to other GPS software like TOMTOM/iGO.......but MFM with JV is the best.

I agree... In terms of interface...nothing beats tomtom but as for local maps papago is the best... If only mfm can be downloaded to tomtom, it will be the best for iphone.
