Just bought Papago Pro My/Sg a few days ago. Having used Sygic before, here's my 2cents :

1. Default map is Malfreemap dated 26/06/2009. I saw few junctions at my home are missing, so I updated the map to Malfreemap dated 30/12/2009.

2. Routing is excellent, as u can expect from a comprehensive map.

3. App is stable (so far). No crash when re-routing. Re-routing is slower than Sygic.

4. Junction view is excellent and beautiful.

5. POI search is fast, and it's a lot better than Sygic. Just key-in the POI name. Auto-complete is a welcomed feature.

6. Functionality-wise, Sygic is clear winner. Papago feels like Google Map + POI. Very basic. What I want to see in the next release would be :

a. Navigate to coordinate (key-in latitude and longitude)
b. Route summary map, which shows the overall route, distance, and estimated time
c. If GPS is offline, user can select any point on the map as starting point. This is useful for route planning

I believe a) and b) is available in Papago stand-alone GPS, I hope they will bring more features from their stand-alone GPS to Iphone app.

As i said earlier, Papago is slower than Sygic when re-routing. It might be best to slow down your vehicle when it's re-routing.

I'm actually using Ipod Touch 1G + IGPS360 module + GPSSerial software. I believe my combo has better GPS response and accuracy than Iphone 3G/3GS built-in GPS. So I never have lag/delay in my current position.

No, u don't need data plan at all for this app. Data plan is also not needed for GPS. That's why I can use Papgo & Sygic on my Ipod Touch.

BTW, I've submitted my mini review on Papago at Itunes.

Bro,
No doubt that tomtom and Sygic have better GUI..But, themost important fact is the map.Tomtom/Sygic is uses Tele Athlas map,and Tele Athlas map only cover 40% map of Malaysia only..ONLY malsingmap or malfeemaps have the complete coverage of Malaysia/Singapore.Why? Because these forum is local and contribute widely by Malaysian. They compile up all these piece and parcel..That is why u see Garmin uses malsingmap andpapago uses malfeemaps.. What is the point of having a F1 class's GUI but having a lousy map...Think about it..

Ideally I want Sygic + Malfreemaps. Doesn't see that happening, if ever. Forget Tomtom, they won't abandon Teleatlas.

Lack of some roads can lead to longer distance in some areas. For example, Teleatlas map still lacks DUKE highway Sentul-Jalan Duta section. How this missing section will effect routing? Try routing from UIA Gombak to NSE RSA Sungai Buloh with Sygic. It will route you through MRR2 Kepong/Selayang, LDP and Penchala Link before finally going into Jalan Duta toll plaza (34km + stressful journey during peak hours). While with Papago, u will happily drive through DUKE highway straight to Jalan Duta toll plaza (21km). Or like my recent trip to Terengganu where I stopped at Temerloh, Sygic/Tomtom will show me in the middle of nowhere.

BTW, take a look at China Papago. It's completely different than the others. In fact it's called Papago X6.3

The best part is, the app comes with elevated road and tunnel simulation. The elevated road function is just like those found in PND. Supposedly will ease navigation a lot.

No sample image for the elevated view though

Malaysian Papago does have elevated roads function, probably not all roads but at least I saw many roads in Klang Valley are covered. If tunnel simulation refers to 3D building, I don't think Papago Malaysia have 3D tunnels apart from 3D buildings in KL. FYI 3D building data comes from Papago, not from Malfreemaps community.

In term of functions, Tomtom is far superior than Papago. Papago looks very basic. No route preview, cannot set alternate route, cannot set multiple destination, cannot enter coordinates, UI not as smooth as Tomtom etc.

However, Papago uses Malfreemap, which is the best map for Malaysia, and far superior than Tomtom's Teleatlas map. Don't dare using Tomtom to get you to a street in Temerloh, Pahang for example. As Malfreemap is a community project, it's constantly updated by people, including me smile.gif

Personally I can live with functionally inferior Papago with 1st rate map.

There's no free/trial/version of Papago. Papago is cheaper than Tomtom because Malfreemap is free, Tomtom's Teleatlas map is not. Papago lite is abit cheaper without 3D building & junction view. The Pro version is worth the extra price, junction view is useful to navigate through tricky lanes around Klang valley.

Since none of the apps (I have Papago & Sygic. I don't know about Tomtom) offers GPS logging, u have to track new roads via other app.

MotionX is cheap and decent. I use XGPS bcoz it's free and GPS logging is always enabled.

For recording POIs, u can record in Sygic, and later retrieve the coordinates, or note down onto a paper. Another way some mappers do is snap photos of POIs, and later geotag/synchronize the photos with GPS logs.
