technically, i require something that has iso of 3200, and 6.5 fps is something i need. Cause for school i handle events like sports and performances that require that iso and a fast camera.

For RM3k

How about a used Canon 20D + used Tammy 17-50mm f2.8 as your kittlylens? 20D is 5fps and it can go up to ISO 3200.

If you go for a used 30D, you might only able to get the body + the standard Canon 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 kittylens.

Get Siggy 70-300mm f4-5.6 Macro. You get both Tele + Macro lens.

Then save up more for the Canon 70-200mm f4 L. tongue.gif

Frankly, I prefer 70-200mm f2.8L tongue.gif The feel is different when you hold one f2.8 compared to when you are holding one f4 unit. However it's significantly heavier compared to f4. If you have extra bucks later on, go for the f2.8 version.

well of course. but anyone would agree that having IS is better than having none at all, IF one can bear the cost. tongue.gif

what i'm aiming for now is actually a tele lens which will enable me to snap subjects which are far away from me. smile.gif

18-55mm means the focal length.
The smaller the value, the wider the lens. 10mm is the widest lens available

the 450D will be like a slim down version of the 40D... then whats the point of having both similar freature and somewhat better (video capability) version of camera with pricing different on the market at the same time>>>??

I guess we will have to wait until it really announce... but lately the new camera announcement really kill pple that is short of budget like me i.e. the sony a200...zzz I am not saying that Sony if better but the price is just soooo tempting...zzz

No point getting that, you start with cheaper body + lens, and you gonna suffer later on. It's very hard to get used Sony / Minolta lens. Simply because, low number of people selling it and even if you manage to find one, it gonna be overpriced cause everybody fighting for it since it's limited. Take for instance a used Minolta 50mm f1.7, some people are selling it for RM400-500. A used Canon 50mm f1.8 is just around RM2xx, if you are lucky enough you can even get it @ RM180 like one of our forumer.

I was an Alpha user last time, each time I could only drool whenever I came across people selling used lens. Simply because it gonna be either Canon / Nikon. Sony / Minolta? maybe once in a blue moon, that also sold at extremely high price. Brand new Sony 70-200mm f2.8 is pricey and because of that most of them would just opt for the legendary Minolta 70-200mm f4. You might wanna ask the Alpha users, how many of them actually own the Sony 70-200mm f2.8? smile.gif

Yes, it shouldn't be any problem if you are still with kittylens + 50mm f2.8. You'll only need a BG baaaadly when you are mounting a bigger and heavier lens on ya DSLR. That's where a BG comes in handy by stabilizing your DSLR when you are shooting potraits.

bright as 430EX? i dont know.. should be.. coz i feel that it's good enough for me. around 40~50m night time.. with very very very little light.. i pump ISO 1600 and shoot a taxi... can see his plate number clearly. (using 300mm)

price update for the sigma EF500 DG ST from shasinki is RM550 only.. ><

got two version, ST is without lcd screen.
Super is with lcd screen can serve as slave unit, wireless flash and so on... RM975.. around that...

currently quite happy with the flash gun i got for its price... no regrets.

that's wrong man, even if it's their event they also cannot claim rights to the photo, rights still belong to the photographer. Unless you sign some sort of agreement saying that whatever you shoot there, the photos belong to them lah, otherwise it's still yours. Sheesh how can the school simply claim like that, taking advantage of ppl lah

don't use save for web, go to File > Save as, then select jpeg, then you'll get a "Jpeg option" dialog box, quality choose high or maximum

haha i know what's wrong, you using tiff right, you tiff file must have been 16bits, first you need to convert it to 8bits, go to Image > Mode > , you'll see 16Bits/Channel tick, select 8Bits/Channel then save as again

no problem, it'll be easy once you get used to it

uh simplest explanation is 16 bits can contains more colors than 8 bits

there's no 70mm IS lens, unless it's a 70-200, 70-300 but both IS lens is expensive, impossible to get together with 400D for just RM4k. From the price I think it should be the 17-85 IS lens instead

I managed to claim a flash unit from my old US Amex credit card reward point and it arrived last week after the bird park outing. My sis brought it back with her. It's a Quantaray QF30 flash and I've never heard of it before smile.gif Not sure how it compares with Canon or Nissin or any other brands. More info here:
Quantaray QF30

Being a SLR newbie, I'm not sure how to take good pictures with flash too smile.gif Anyone can give some guidance?

Har? So cheap ah? Good or not? Can tahan or not?

I wish I can spend more on the cam but I really can't afford now. Planning to go uni. Have to save la.

By the way, do you guys have the problem of having your LCD display all smudged up by your facial oil/makeup/moisturizer? My friend said my camera smelled like moisturizer I use on my face. LOL.

And there was once I put on a little bit of blusher and went shooting. I end up losing my blush on the left side because it got smudged up on my LCD! It was so embarrassing, I had to go to the toilet to remove all of my blush (I didn't bring my brusher along that day). Luckily I didn't put mascara! LOL LOL. Bet you guys don't have this problem!

And how about you guys who wear glasses? Do you press your glasses against the viewfinder and blur them up or you guys remove your glasses altogether?

I'm just curious. biggrin.gif

ok.. for the Di622... its cheap if u really need it.. if u find that the pop up flash suite u... then stick to it... no point investing something that u don't use.
2nd, 450 is cheap, but not that cheap for something that you seldom use.

for the LCD problem... I think there is some so call view finder extender that will extend the view finder a few milimeter so that your face wont come into contact with the lcd. I am looking for 1 also... I am wearing spec... and I have a big, fat face hahah, so its kinda trouble for me to wipe the oil that stick to the lcd after the shooting. hehe.

Hope this help

I think the external would be useful if I want to shoot indoors. I've been having a lot of blurred pictures using the kit lens for indoor shots and I don like the build-in flash. Maybe for a cheaper alternative I could get a pop-up flash diffuser. Money's always the problem. HMPH. laugh.gif

Oh, a viewfinder extender? Cool! But is this the one that comes with the camera already? Is that an extender?

what you are looking for is this here, it extend the eyepiece by 15mm but it also reduces viewfinder magnification by 30%, not sure how this will affect when u try to focus using viewfinder though.

Do you press your glasses against your viewfinder? Then you glasses all blurred up la like that?

The thing about me is that I am particular about what I use to wipe my glasses. I won't randomly take a tissue paper and wipe it because it will scratch my lenses. So the blurring of my glasses as I press it again the viewfinder is really quite an issue for picky, troublesome me. Leceh la want to bring my spectacle box with my spectacle cloth inside everywhere I go la...

Or is it just me being very troublesome? unsure.gif

Haven't actually find the need to wipe my glasses when snapping, maybe coz the viewfinder is slightly touching my glasses instead of pressing on it. I wipe the LCD more coz of my oily nose biggrin.gif

When there's a feel, there's a need. Go get it. lol. 40D is good but i still like my 30D's feel because it fits my hand perfectly whereas 40D's grip is a bit higher and it's hard to reach the buttons on the top part without straining your fingers while holding the cam.

Tamron AF 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens (Model A020) ?
it cost RM2,095 at shashinki.com

It depends on what do you shoot most. If you want fast lens you should get lens like C70-200mm f4 L.

Yeah true, looking at the features, prices will be quite expensive if it's a Canon. Hahaha. So probably if the price of 400D will drop to around 1.9k. I'll get it for sure. But for the body only tho, lenses will probably go for 18-55mm IS. lol.

i seen quite a few 350D user who plan to go 400D and 400D user who plan to go 450D.

seriously la guys, this kind of upgrade is just not worth it. might as well fund yourself for a larger jump to like 30D / 40D where you can adjust WB by 100k and have better features / buttons.

the thing is 40D and 5D the price gap, wow can get many other lenses. smile.gif

furthermore the thing about 5D is that it can't use EF-S lenses already (can't use Sigma's DC range. Tamron / Tokina i donno), so you need to find a counter-part for the 5D.

But the 18-55mm lens produces soft images. I'd opt for the 18-55mm IS if its me. Have been trying out the 350D with 18-55mm these days and found out that most of the images produced are soft.

just to let you know ya 17-85 though is a nice lens, but at 17mm the distortion is the worse, other than that is a nice walkaround lens to have. I have been thinking of getting another lens to replace it but cannot find one with the same focal length, mostly is 17-50 or 17-55 haahaha

hey guys, noob here.

i agree that upgrading from 400D or 350D to 450D is bad move.
But how about people like me who don't have one yet? I mean, I'm still saving to get one of these, so the earliest boleh dapat pun by second half of 2008. Will the 450D be in msia already by then? What price range do u guys think it's gonna be aa? If less than 3k, of course I'll take 450D straight. If not, maybe 400D is enough already, extra dough can spend on better lense.

But I do like the features on 450D. Spot metering, bigger lcd, bigger pixel, sd card some more. Live view also not bad.

So what do u guys think best for me? 450D or 400D?

if u don own a camera, just go straight to 450D. Why, coz a nice body can last for a long time so why go for lower 1 if you plan to buy? if money permits, go to 40D. Lens you can always opt for 2nd hand coz the user base it very very huge... so no fuss on that.

hey guys, noob here.

i agree that upgrading from 400D or 350D to 450D is bad move.

*
if by the time you save enough to buy and the 450D have reach our shore, I would say go for it if within your budget.

seriously la guys, this kind of upgrade is just not worth it. might as well fund yourself for a larger jump to like 30D / 40D where you can adjust WB by 100k and have better features / buttons.

True, but if great cameras were to pair up with great photographers, then thats the "BOOM!". So i guess probably wads best is train your photography skills with your present camera first and then when you feel it's time or the cam couldn't fullfill your needs anymore, den it is time for some upgrades. So i guess the camera and photographer do play roles in the world of photography. smile.gif

USM = Ultra Sonic Motor, a kind of AF motor drive. Less noisy i presume. Cos S5 also using USM with IS! xD

And yes arshad, it is below 1k. Great value for such a good lens. I wun say it is perfect tho. smile.gif

ultrasonic motor, faster and quite autofocusing, dun worry too much about the plastic mount since the lens is light, and the built is pretty good. personally tested it out so it's a good lens for that kind of price, and having IS helps a lot with that kind of zoom range.
but you do lost the wide end if u use this lens though since it start at 55mm

The 55-250mm IS is made to pair up together with the 18-55mm IS lens. So if you've got both of these, it should be enough to cover the range from 18-250mm already. lol.

Malaysia will probably sell it cheaper than the US. For example the A200 is also selling at around 799USD (RM2.7k+) is US but here in Malaysia, it is only sold at the price of 1999RM. I guess it fully depends on Canon M'sia to decide on the price, but of course there's a minimum price for it, not less that the cost+shipping amount.

Added on January 24, 2008, 4:01 pm arshad - if both lenses add up together i believe it should be lesser than 1.5k. So why not? Since you have a budget of 1.7k? tongue.gif

i think you didn't get my point. it's just to inform the less-informed that the goods could be acquired for less than that's. smile.gif

even on my blog, i also set the pricing higher for all parts because it's best to over-budget then to under-budget.

So far reviews from forumers are reasonable prices and great customer service. You can try it out yourself, quite a recommended place to shop for camera, lenses and accesories. smile.gif

There's a 133x speed 1. Which means should be around 15mb per sec for write speed and around 20mb per sec for read speed. Biggest I've heard is around 4gb 133x by Lexar.

Meh, ignore la. Autofocus fast or not fast its not the main thing. Those are just mere debates between lens and gears. We need not to take into account of what matters most on that situation, just be happy with what you have and use them to the fullest. smile.gif

If not mistaken SD cards come in a few flavours and those high capacity ones needs "special" features in the camera to take advantage of it. SDHC (like the 450d)

Anyway... I went Lowyat to get a new CF card. AIming for a 4GB one.. 133x (not 266x as too expensive and not much use for the camera.)

Went up/down/round/round no one selling/got stock for the 4GB Kingston 133x. (RM160), they have 4GB 50x @ RM130 (a bit stupid since price difference so little) and then the 266x is like RM260, RM100 different man!! I don't feel worth it, just like the sandisk Ultra. X. (what for ultra, my money also ulta already man..)

End up, I bought a trancend 4GB (last one on stock) after asking Viking for opinion. (Worry if if there's known issues with this CF brand with the canon. What happen if suddenly DIE? All 4GB mati lah!!)

So.. end up got it for Rm160 and verified working. Have not tested kao-kao.

BTW, for some reason, ppl in Low Yat

1. Don't sell CF
2. Kingston nearly everywhere out of stock!!

regarding CF speed, IMO it depends on how you use it la.

if your style of photography rarely use BURST mode, then i don't see a problem using 50x.

those that want speed usually do lotsa bursts and snap in RAW, they'll get the faster CFs.

5mb/s faster doesn't do anything when you snap only 1 pic at a time. smile.gif i find that you have to be like really in need for the speed, like snapping a lot of burst shots of let's say some motorcross where participants pass your position again and again and such.

yeah lor, 66x also can do already. you use 66x or 150x. it's not like you can feel the difference unless the way you use pushes the read / write speed.

Not really, speed does matter. There were once I was supposed to copy 4gb of pictures to my client on the spot after I finish shooting cause they were rushing to somewhere else and they need to take the copy back to their HQ, thank god my 8Gb is 266x, else I would have got screwed by them kaw kaw. Basically it depends on you, if you don't mind waiting for ages for it to copy, you may go ahead on those slow ones.

Not really, speed does matter. There were once I was suppose to copy 4gb of pictures to my client on the spot after I finish shooting cause they are rushing to somewhere else and they need to take the copy back to their HQ, thank god my 8Gb is 266x, else I would have got screwed by them kaw kaw. Basically it depends on you, if you don't mind waiting for ages for it to copy, you may go ahead on those slow ones.
*
but if comparing the price, i would choose size more than speed ... well, it depends on the person purpose also ...

Yea, if you have a high speed card, you can use it as your mini hard disk too smile.gif I'm using my 8Gb 266x to share movies and pictures. You wouldn't do that if you are using a slow one.

i do think the Alpha is a good camera. Just that it's not the only good one around. smile.gif

actually from my point of view, the battey grip actually add in gripping surface for guys with big hand and some what adding the additional weight to stabilize the camera when shooting. This is an important point when you are trying to zoom out for some distance object.

further more, it double the battery life and in cases where u uses pop up flash to shoot, the battery won't die off that fast.

for me the main reason for grip is for a vertical (portrait) shots. if you shoot landscape most of the time then no need grip lor.

It's actually useful when you have a heavy lens like C70-200mm f2.8 L. It helps to stabilize the body when you are shooting vertically. On top of that, shooting vertically is much easier using the extra buttons on the battery grip.

If got that lense and and no batt grip and wan to take portrait shots, can support the bottom part with one hand, another hand holding the lense, and set timer. laugh.gif

18-55mm kit is one that produces soft images, personally i feel that the 18-55mm IS version is not bad. It is used as the 40D kit. Sharp pictures with IS. Recommended by me, what say you guys rebels? smile.gif

Sony A-200 twin kit is selling for about Rm2300. (Vladimir Thread). Cheaper then its A-100 twin kit. Sony really really pushing and trying to capture the market.

The 450D seems promising for an entry level dSLR which has 12.2 megapixels in it and some additional features :

1. Live view mode, including contrast-detect AF
2. Redesigned menus (including My Menu as seen in 40D)
3. New, larger, higher capacity battery
4. Standard 450D kit will include a redesigned, image stabilized version of Canon's 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens

However, it will be using SD card but luckily it supports SDHC so it wouldn't be that bad but most of the dSLR users are already having CF cards which is a setback. So I guess this is an answer to Sony's competitive A200 for the entry level dSLR. Sony is offering a price which everyone can't resist (unless you just hate Sony or probably love Canon/Nikon etc), this should be an interesting question on how much would the 450D be priced here ? Anyone has any details on this ?

At first i also tot of buying that kit lens with IS, i asked my friend who worked at canon, he said it's just another same kitlens but implemented with IS only. Picture quality wise no difference. So he adviced me to save up and get other more superior lens.

Yes, it's definitely promising IF u are starting from scratch. Really no point for us who has been using an entry level to upgrade to this 450D unless u are tight on budget and going for the live view it has. =)

yes , i agree you shoud save more money for a good lens . the kitlens +IS's pic quality is no diff with the nonIS one.

some people like to change their body, dont bother their budget, as long as NEW , change.

55-250 problem is you can't snap WIDE but you have longer range when it comes to tele.

and yes, the 18-200 OS is around Rm 1.7k. i got it at RM 1.7k last year NOV. so the price could possibly be lower nowadays.

I would not recommend 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS, it's still a kitty lens + IS only. Picture quality still more or less around the same like kittylens, might as well invest a little bit more and go for Tammy 17-50mm f2.8

no doubt Sony , Minolta , Carl Zeiss lens are expensive and rare in 2nd hand market..

Better check the pinned thread created by myjunk.

Yes, most of the 400D users pick 50mm as their alternative rather than the kitlens.

last i heard YL also selling at RM 1.7k already. not sure, please call them for details.

on the other hand i met another 18-200 OS user the other day at outing and he bought is for around RM 1.8k i think. and that also he only bought it last month or something like that.

so the price varies, if you see RM 1.8k - please don't go thinking that i quote wrong price la. smile.gif cos really, even when i buy at RM 1.7k that time there were shops selling more than RM 1.8k.

Went to my dad's house and he showed me this old canon he dug out of somewhere from a long..long time ago.. (~20+ years I think)
and then My mom brought out the flash, which she thought it was something else.

The Flash still works, but it takes a while to get up to charge and you can hear the distinctive whine as it charges. There's no button anywhere except for an on/off and a flash charging/ready light.

Boy I (we) were all VERY surprised that when I put it on my 400D and starting to take picture, the freaking flash went off!! It really works!

But, since there's no way to move the flash/bounce it, the light is _really_ very bright and at ISO100 indoors, I had to change the shutter to ~1/300+ just so that it won't overexpose (and EV -2)

How's that for compatibility?

the canon 55-250 IS is a good one though... but in your case i will suggest you to take the sigma 18-200 OS which i think is slightly below RM 1700

maybe i'll listen to your suggesstion..... will search for price lower then RM1.7k
