I think culinary art is the better description.
A few colleges do offer this course, these are some of them, hope this information is helpful to you. However, it seems these colleges only offer up to Diploma level, you might need to study overseas for higher level of education. In my opinion, this course has quite good of job prospect, you will get nice salary too. If you are interested in this course and you are going for it, this will definitely lead you to success, for a better future career. It is because with generated interest, you will learn things easier. I can't give you more opinion as I am not studying in this course. This post has been edited by fruitie: Dec 10 2007, 02:37 PM |

I heard that "Cooking" is one of the subjects of "Hotel Management".
I also heard that "Hotel Management" have lots of good job prospects out there + highly paid. (You will be managing entire hotels.) |

QUOTE(Benjamin911 @ Dec 10 2007, 08:25 PM) I heard that "Cooking" is one of the subjects of "Hotel Management". Yes, but TS wants to specialise only in culinary art. I also heard that "Hotel Management" have lots of good job prospects out there + highly paid. (You will be managing entire hotels.) My sister is a graduate for Hotel Management and their pay is always based on the hotel's sales for that particular month, they called that service point. A friend of mine graduated with Diploma of Culinary Arts from KDU. He's currently working(as an assistant chef or something) at the Shangri-La KL. I think it's been around 1 year and he earns RM2000 a month.
Well nothing much can be said. Like you, he enjoys cooking. The work hours are probably exhausting but hey, it's his passion. |

Thanks guys, sorry for late reply.
im just wondering around thinking about hows culinary arts. but its my choice, tml im go to school take my trial result and register for this course. thanks guys Added on December 27, 2007, 6:40 pm QUOTE(biebie @ Dec 11 2007, 09:48 PM) In Culinary Arts its all base on France Cooking.so its was kind of western. other college offer different type, like sunway they offer Hotel Management , if u interested on Chef then u specialise on chef course. But i feel that Taylors is more base on chef. This post has been edited by munak991: Dec 27 2007, 06:40 PM |

Working as chef means not working from 9 to 5. Catch the drift?
Might apply for Diploma of Culinary Arts in UiTM. |

i admire the fact that you have identified your passion and interest early. its good to know your ambition, learning things related to it will come easier. i totally back you to pursue culinary arts. work your way up. become a head chef at a 5-star restaraunt can earn you 5k/month easily. but yea, working hours will be til late night. but that is part and parcel with the job IMO. plus, chicks dig guys who can cook!

High pay or not, it is actually determined by the hotel's sales a chef in one hotel didnt apply for a higher chef position due to the fact that he learnt from another chef and didnt have any qualifications n its not easy to find a chef who is willing to guide u from the start.. certainly they wont tell u their secrets.... but ur basic salary is high service point is just additional pay This post has been edited by kueks: Jan 7 2008, 08:16 PM |

I am very interested in this course. But current statistics don't really show positive reinforcement for me to pursue in this course...
I hear because nowadays there are sooooo many ppl who started this diploma that there are not enough hotels for them to work? Flame me if this is a rumour..... because that is what everybody's' been telling me... Also, Maximum wager for a chef is how much? I'm not talking all those big shots who appear on TV, I mean like normal unknown ones working in hotel which are not so famous types.... I really need to know this information... can help? |

IMO, this industry is pretty competitive in Malaysia. Well, if you're really interested then I suggest that you come to Australia to do it. If you want, you can apply for PR here aswell. This country lacks chefs. Hehe I'm here in Australia doing Diploma in Hospitality Management (Commercial Cookery III).
If you wanna know more, go to Aus Ed or IDP. |

Hmm I love culinary arts but just never thought of it as a career. A friend who's a chef says it's a very competitive world out there, fighting hiding and stealing recipes it's insane! Don't know if I can cope with the stuff. Anyhoo, it's very rewarding too but you must have a passion for it definitely!

But if Food Service/Management then yes. UPM does offer. 10 years back I spent about RM 15K including accomodation, tuition fees & food for 3 yrs (very simple living though). If you would consider City & Guilds, UK qualification, then it would just cause you about RM 13.5K, at Seri Petaling. |

Hey guys! "P
Nice to meet you all!!! I'm a SPM school leaver planning to go for a Culinary Arts course! There are some choices of college in my consideration... But I'm not sure which school to go... Below are some questions that I would like inquire: 1. A French Diploma and a Swiss Diploma, which one is more developed? 2. Which school would you recommend? 3. Do your course touch on pretty much of Oenology's knowledge? 4. Does GentingInti cooperate with the restaurant, THE OLIVE at Genting Highland? I mean, does student have the choice to undergo industrial training at THE OLIVE? Thanks a lot if i can get your kindly reply!!! "P This post has been edited by TRVO: Mar 20 2008, 01:35 PM |

if im not mistaken
swiss = management france = culinary arts as for oenology, did it in my term 3 and tbh, i didnt learn much. maybe lack of interest. but taylor's does provide a cert in wine something, so maybe if you really like these things related to wine, you can pursue. |

As now im taking Chef course also(aka Culirany Arts) 1st is Sunway College. (it offer hotel management but if u interest in Chef u specialise on that section) 2nd is Taylors College Culinary arts is the course it offer Pastry, French Cuisine(western), and u have to study restaurant and etc course(compaulsary) 3rd is KDU i have no idea for KDU,but i heard they offered Culinary arts also.( you could consult other forum-er like smiley face and mengkin) Extra comments Some of my seniors said KDU is much better than taylors, but i have no idea why they say like that. But Taylors had been platinum awarded 2007/2008 best hospitality School in Asia. And i hate consultant say this word: " The Quality Is There" where? |

Wow...This tread doesnt Active for a long time. Thx for the Bump. Anyway freakfingers12. To answer ur question. There is alot of College offer Dip in Culinary Arts. But all some of the college is new and they have no idea what to offer the student to get a quality culinary student. There are a few Famous College offer Dip in Culinary art. 1st 1 is Taylors 2nd is KDU 3rd is Sunway College and i dont think there is college offer Degree in Culinary Arts. But my course is Degree in Hotel Management Specialise in Cuisine or F&B. So what u think about it? U still cna go to other college and try out the Dip in Culinary Arts. |

I was a X KDU degree student in management. Working in hotel is good if you do not have family commitment (due to working preasure and odd working hours). After graduate, plz do not expect high salary or post. Even after obtaining a hons degree, I have to be a FOA in 5 stars hote. haizz... Certification is like a passport or a visa for us to work. hello. just look for a job at any restaurant that's hiring. rather not be choosy because it's most important to gain experience
btw. there's no degree in culinary arts. after diploma, you can go further and do degree in hotel management.. i don't know how to explain why there's no such thing as a degree in culinary arts.. if you wanna know, hop by aus ed or idp or smth and they'll explain.. |

QUOTE(Benjamin911 @ Dec 10 2007, 08:25 PM) I also heard that "Hotel Management" have lots of good job prospects out there + highly paid. (You will be managing entire hotels.) My friend here, you cant manage or operate the whole hotel when you were newly recruited except you've been in hotel industry for quite some years. In hotel field, you need to start from entry-levels or supervisory levels. Im a student of Diploma in Hotel Management and i regret a bit why i choose this course, tomorrow is my last of industrail training. |

I'm completing my degree in marketing soon. Wanna go into food industry, aka to become a chef. Guess i made a mistake for not going into CA last time. Wanna ask, what's my available options? I'm a pretty good cook already at the moment (learn through books and videos), but wish to go through professional training to be a chef. Instead of just attending classes, can i go under apprenticeship with established chefs (ie, training in hotel kitchen or well known restaurants and etc). Know any such opportunity in Malaysia? I wish we're like UK or Aust where there are lots of opportunity to train under well known chefs in restaurant. Its a lot of hard work for sure, but at the end, you're learning from the best. I've been asking around but so far its been pretty disappointing. |

Hi guys, I'm currently interested in taking culinary arts. Right now I'm reading the program pathway of French Diploma In Culinary Arts in Taylors and noticed there are mathematics based subjects like accounting and economics.
My question is how extensive are these subjects? I dislike mathematics by nature but have no problem with basic calculations and graphs, but I do avoid Advanced Mathematics type like a plague. Are there any other program that does not focus much on Mathematics based subjects ? |

Hey there, I'm a new student of culinary arts. I like this course a lot, but there's a problem that's making me think of changing my course. I've got knee problem, and it's been bothering me because of the job nature that I have to stand up while working. I know my knees will hurt real bad in future because my dad also has this problem and I myself have this problem when I used to play basketball. It's a kinda passed down problem. Should I just stick to this course or change my course? Is there anything I can do to reduce the knee pain?

Added on November 28, 2008, 9:23 amLearning, Practical Training, Gives Edge To New College On Hospitality, Tourism KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Students at the newly set-up Berjaya University College which offers hospitality, tourism and services education, will have an edge over most counterparts at similar colleges. At this college -- located in Berjaya Times Square Hotel and Convention Centre in Jalan Imbi -- students not only learn the theory but also the practical aspects of the subjects within the premises. The practical training will be held at one of Berjaya Corporation Group's businesses, including Berjaya Hotel & Resorts around the world. University college vice-chancellor Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Abu Hassan Othman said it offered students practical training at its super brands outlets such as Borders, Starbucks, Kenny Rogers and U-Mobile. "This arrangement is part of Berjaya Immersion Methodology to get the students to adapt to the real world of hospitality, tourism and services education while still studying," he told Bernama in a special interview here Wednesday. The university college will begin operations in January next year. Prof Abu Hassan said under this programme, the students could have the opportunity to undergo between 20 and 24 weeks of industry placement. He said the university college management believed that its innovative education methodology and the strong focus on personal attention and care for the students, would assist them to achieve their full potential and transform their aspirations into reality. Prof Abu Hassan said the methodology was pervasive in all aspects of education delivery and curriculum at the university college, particularly in the following areas, namely Berjaya Practicum, Industry Partnerships and Berjaya Industry Placement. "This exposure will provide students with practical insight into the industry, with a deeper understanding of the area in which they are majoring, as well as, experiencing the different cultures, operating systems and work practices in different companies. "It is through these partnerships, that we ensure our students will obtain the best supervised practical work and gain that required real world learning experience to excel in their vocations," he added. He noted that it was important to equip hospitality graduates, both locals and foreigners, with first-class technical and professional expertise, including insightful business knowledge, to help them earn the respect and recognition. Prof Dr Abu Hassan said the university college had also set up a coffee academy and chocolate laboratory for the culinary arts students, besides setting up gourmet cafe, culinary retail shop, demonstration kitchens, production and pastry kitchen and others. For the initial stage, the university college is offering five programmes. They are Diploma in Culinary Arts, Diploma in Hospitality Management, Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management, Bachelor of Hospitality Management (Honours) and Bachelor of Tourism Management (Honours). Courses in Foundation in Hospitality, Tourism and Services, Diploma in Retail Management, Diploma in Events Management, Bachelors of Retail Management (Honours) and Bachelor of Events Management (Honours) and a few other programmes are pending approval from the higher education ministry. -- BERNAMA Added on November 28, 2008, 9:29 amBerjaya University College of Hospitality launches website - The Sun KUALA LUMPUR: The Berjaya University College of Hospitality (BUCH) yesterday launched its website, which is designed to do more than just provide information on the institution. "We also hope to educate the public on the challenging and vibrant world of hospitality, tourism and services," Berjaya Higher Education chief operating officer Mae Ho said. "We will use the website to creatively disseminate accurate and insightful information about the industry and build in students a passion to excel in the industry before they embark on their learning journey with us," she said at the launch. The website features two interactive elements – Discovery and Butler B Interactive. Discovery, with the tagline "Discover the Global Approach. Experience The Real World", contains a series of related online and real-world activities for the public to take part in. For starters, it will host Discovery Challenge — a contest in which SPM school leavers answer questions on the tourism industry online, with a chance to win prizes. The contest runs from Dec 13 to 27. Butler B Interactive features a blue animated character which will interact with visitors to the site in a lighthearted manner, and through flash games, educate them on the challenges faced by people in the hospitality and tourism industry. Ho said a career in the hospitality industry is a lucrative choice for students, the industry having generated US$856 billion (RM3 trillion) worldwide last year. "This phenomenal growth coupled with an increase in consumer demand has raised industry standards and expectations on the knowledge and skills that graduates should have," she added. Ho said BUCH will provide a unique and diverse educational experience to students through internships at Berjaya Group hotels. "If you look at the number of hotels, resorts and businesses that we are in, and the golf clubs we have, compared to any other conglomerate. "In terms of resorts, we have Langkawi, Redang, Tioman, and where city hotels are concerned, we have hotels in London and we have just bought two in Hanoi," Ho, adding that BUCH graduates would not only be trained at Berjaya hotels and resorts, but also the tourism industry as a whole. "Berjaya’s resorts and hotels will only enrich our teaching, which many other places cannot provide," she said. Ho said students could also work at food and beverage retail franchises operated by the group. BUCH vice-chancellor Tan Sri Abu Hassan Othman said that besides education, the institution would also research trends in the tourism and hospitality industry. "The emphasis on research is part of our dedication to exploring critical trends in the hospitality, tourism and services industry, and pursuing research that will contribute towards the advancement of the industry," he said. "We hope that by starting (the website) today, through something as simple and innovative as Butler B, potential students will have the chance to start understanding, and eventually appreciating hospitality as more than just working in hotels and restaurants, but a career that encapsulates the art of professional leadership and services across the board," Abu Hassan said. BUCH will see its first intake of about 200 students on Jan 7 in the following programmes:- » Diploma in Culinary Arts, » Diploma in Hospitality Management, » Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management, » Bachelor of Hospitality Management; and » Bachelor of Tourism Management. QUOTE(munak991 @ Nov 29 2008, 04:00 PM) i need advise for my 2nd IT training. Hi there, so you are a culinary student. Your second training would be only 2 months if i not mistaken. I will advise you to try training in restaurant such as dome, Chili's Grill and bar, La Bodega, Victoria Station Steakhouse,Shrooms, Little Havana,Eden restaurant and etc, Don't go for fast food restaurant, they are only good for management not culinary experience . Is ok to train in Hotel, do find hotel with fine dining concept restaurant. I reckon Rossini’s, Ritz-Carlton Hotel, but there are others good one to beside this. If you like french cuisine, try this http://www.lebouchonrestaurant.com/. Not guarantee some of this restaurants accept trainee. Well, all the best in finding your desire training placement.where would u suggest? 3 months training in Kitchen. Hotel seem to be nice but doesnt learn more... |

During my time don't have diploma in culinary art. During my time as Batch 15, Only got 3 group the most. Now i think more than 8 or 10. Lecturer now very lenient not like last time, Chef Bala will throw pot at you. Yucks.... The learning environment very stress in kitchen that time. I think lecturer had hard time controlling the group. Even the dress code very strict. Cannot dye your hair even for girls. But now, I see so many of them come to college very colorful.

QUOTE(kueks @ Dec 3 2008, 05:27 PM) sure anot =.=" Ya, long way. Most of the lecturer are the same, only some new faces. Fnb workshop can say 70% will be the same. The question just change abit. It happen to me when i was sitting for higher diploma. I got question on pro and con wine selection (something like that, dont really remember in detail) during trial. Than on Final, my friend got my question and i got her question. Conclusion, 8 question to pick on trial, 5 or 6 question on final will be the same and only change the wording and most of the times is exactly the same. But don't take thing for granted. ur from batch 15 wo im in 26 dy haha same goes with fnb workshops? ur cert is from toulouse right ??? Yup, my cert is Toulouse cert. Bilingual cert, french and english and is direct from the university. 100% overseas cert. It put there complete in toulouse le mirail uni. So you can say you took ur degree in France. LOL. Cause i went to interview, the interviewer straight ask me about my study life in France. But in act i did all the studies in Malaysia. Interviewer dont know u study local or oversea cause the cert is 100% french cert. The cert dont mention about student complete it at Malaysia unlike like other local university like Monash, new south wales and etc that mention your completion of studies locally or oversea and ur registration is at Toulouse uni. The student bio all at main server of toulouse uni and u will be given a toulouse university student card when u complete ur studies. |

agree with what u said .. just matter of either u wanna take FNB or CKO specialization ... but still, hotel is the best choice for culinary art student as a normal 5 star hotel would have at least 5 outlets in it.
like me myself, im going to mix between ,kitchen , fnb and admin work for my 5 month training ... |

If not mistaken they going to put choclate work in this syllabus also(not sure which year) I think there still got some difference among colleges, for sure3 difference college provide difference things. For KDU your last sem are working in KDU's cafeteria, which means u are the BOSSS!!!

This 1 im not sure, im not supporting Taylors(sometimes i do hate Taylors too).but, in common sense, most of the cuisine/terminology is came from FRENCH. and if study taylors u gonna learn french.... all of the above is just my 2 cent, although the cert/partner is swiss, all their teaching may be also base on FRENCH. Both also in a recommended by the world, French u could go to western country learn and Asian country love it. Chinese Cuisine, u learn from si fu, go to western and open ur own shop = income I heard rumors, now, the markets wants something special, new, exotic, delicious! something really come fresh to the market! people now is fusion cuisine, example Chinese mix with western cuisine! 2) Japanese? to answer you is, no. japanese cuisine uh uh... (i would love to learn that as extra knowledge I could help u with that also, when in the middle of the course u would have industrial Training(IT) u could choose anywhere u want to go, like Shogon Shook, even Jagoya! dont limit ur knowledge, open wide and accept anything! 3) u have to ask University Malaya whether they accept?anyway, why u want to continue from a private to local U? Best of the Best? Nah. --------- 1) Haha, alot of people asked this question, it depends, u got the business brain or not? hmm? ^^ 2) Oenology? nothing is hard if u properly interest go and study it ^^ anyway FYI we make our own wine from grapes 3)hmmm, Mentari, not really.... But if u r a girl better stay with some guys together with ur friends. Safe? i heard alots of news there eventually. Comfort? Ok ok la, what u pay is what u got. somewhere near there have new appartment, safer and more comfort but distant is further abit, and it cost more exp than Mentari court(not recommended u to choose there) if u have no choice some tips for u, rent rooms from agent instead from taylors, they charge 200% for the rent and services QUOTE(MisterCrono @ Feb 7 2009, 08:25 PM) FRENCH cuisine of course ... world recognized Not really French, Chinese cuisine will earn more than French restaurant. depends on where u open.regular? define what regular means ... fine dining? steakhouse? roadside stall? still depends la .. mentari area? personally i dont think so .. i not exactly living in that area .. but that area is full of foreigners .. and kinda alot of prostitute area over there .. my friend -girl - live there don hare to go out alone ... Furthermore it depends on what u like actually, for me i find it French cuisine is more fancy and proper, somehow i find some of the Chinese technique and equipment is very useful! especialy their Knife! u could cut everything with it! not like French cuisine require >3 knife to cut something. (french) De boning, 1 knife Fish, 1 knife Chef Knife, 1 knife (chinese) Deboning, Fish, Chef, Cut cooked food, 1 KNIFE! So, guys go into the course and place where u r interest with Good luck Mate This post has been edited by munak991: Feb 8 2009, 01:32 AM |

QUOTE(guess19 @ Feb 8 2009, 11:15 PM) Hmmmmm,Yes it does! Base on my learning from oenology, why people drink wine together with eating meal? well it because it play a role of mixing the taste well together. i tried so many times i never experience it before. Most of them cheese goes well with wine. And the basic is Lean meat goes well with white wine whereas Red Meat goes well with red wine. So far i tried once! it really suit the taste with the wine! I went Allergro, my lecturer had a wine tasting in that restaurant for us. We had a set meal each dish has it own wine ^^ The pumpkin soup really goes well with the wine! its a twist on my tongue after drinking the soup and a slip of the wine. WOW it really NICE! Picture ^^ i still have it on my PC lol » Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... « |

FYI For Exect Chef.... u need to wait until the chef die/retire then only u get promoted as a exect chef. Cheers mate |

I just finished STPM and I decided not to go for a public U, instead I'll like to go into private in culinary arts(DUH Are there any scholarship available offered by Taylor/KDU? or any company based scholarship for culinary arts? Hey guys, I'm 17 now and I have a big interest in culinary arts. But I have some questions that is bugging me recently.
a) Do you guys who are taking/took culinary arts course undergo Pre-U courses before getting the diploma/degree? b) I'm pretty sure I'll be going to Taylor's as it's much easier to get a scholarship at there. So, do we undergo this course in the main campus or what? And do we go to France? c) I have next to zero experience in the kitchen (don't even know how to hold a knife properly). Will the lecturer teach you the basic stuff during the first few weeks? |

I got a few question, to those who took culinary arts. 1.Is it fun? 2.How much will ptptn loan cover the fee? I heard it grant you only 20k lol 3.Can anyone start working after culinary art diploma? or you need to go into higher diploma and then degree before working.. 4.There are no degree for this course in malaysia, am I stuck to overseas or degree in hosp? 5.If I enter degree in hosp. management without culinary art(diploma) and kitchen knowledge can I still be a chef or I go straight to bellboy?? To continue on to degree, you'd need either STPM or your diploma which you have taken b) Taylor's College school of Hospitality and Tourism operates in the PJ campus, namely the Bali building or Kurnia. Its located in Setia Jaya and is accessible by KTM via the Setia Jaya station. You go to France for a 2 week residency program at the end of your degree year, which is your fourth year c) Yes, the basics are covered but if you have zero experience/knowledge what makes you think this is the course for you? For question 5, I'm stpm student so it's possible to skip diploma and head straight to degree level but without diploma(basic skills of kitchen) can i still opt to be a chef?
I was told that going this route would lead me to a 3 year degree program in Taylor, instead of 2 year. the option of A or B is supposed to be in year 2 tho |

Added on April 7, 2009, 9:00 pmoh one more,is working as chef is allowed to have beard and long hair? Plus, how to say sometime people tend to be over confident.... then end up the student screw up. FYI i learn most of the thing by my self, no lecturer teach me. but just basic(creaming, all in etc...) QUOTE(Vintage @ Apr 7 2009, 09:36 PM) thinking of going oversea or maybe individually go to bakery course around KL/PJ.there i will learn more compare to college. QUOTE(julnoel @ Apr 8 2009, 08:56 AM) the entire course is actually hmmm julian, if u really no commis, then u can call me. cause im in IT currently.1st and 2nd year = diploma 3rd and 4th year = higher diploma 5th year = degree if you complete your diploma, ur allowed to enter the 4th year straight because the 3rd year is the basics. if you have stpm, then I THINK you will probably enter the 3rd year of higher diploma whereby they will still teach you the basics so you actually survive your 3rd and 4th year 5th year..or degree year, not much practical or none at all as far as im concerned. Ahh...Thx for answering all my question but I'm still not sure about this.
If I go straight to Degree, they'll teach the basic..is it the same level as diploma in culinary arts? And if i started in degree, can i still opt to be a chef or I'm stuck being in Hotel management line? Well..Going for only a year in basic means I'll miss industial training, am I really at an disadvantage? Yea..about the culinary arts programme..did you get much knowledge for the industry or you learn most of it yourself? and perfect your skills by your own... |

i feel like Taylors, it is due to their system suck.(aka Staff)
causes all the system ruined. Im waiting for my Industry training result to be comfirm. then i try my 1st choices. allegro. (sucky training place) then i change to choose my 2nd option. then my second choice Le Meridian. U know what happen? on the final week they said LE MERIDIAN IS NO MORE INTAKE OF TRAINEE... so i have no idea where to go... last minute... my friend suggested me to go ampang. but then i dont want to cause i live at Klang what for to travel so far for a training??!?! then now i find my own training place. which is near to my college. after Diploma i wont go to taylors Higher Dip and Degree anymore. grrr think about it? what if people interest in Culinary Arts in the field of Pastier? they didnt offer this course!! some more i didnt learn much about Pastry! even the most simple chocolate ganach i learn my self! Soon my Chef ask me, what is pastry cream? i said i dont know. the Chef laughing at me... Give me such a bad impression about it do u think i will still continue? Added on April 13, 2009, 9:02 pmRESULT JUST OUT! get 16.45/20 ^^ im so happy thx you food science i love you This post has been edited by munak991: Apr 13 2009, 09:02 PM |
