KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 (Bernama) -- Students at the newly set-up Berjaya University College which offers hospitality, tourism and services education, will have an edge over most counterparts at similar colleges.

At this college -- located in Berjaya Times Square Hotel and Convention Centre in Jalan Imbi -- students not only learn the theory but also the practical aspects of the subjects within the premises.

The practical training will be held at one of Berjaya Corporation Group's businesses, including Berjaya Hotel & Resorts around the world.

University college vice-chancellor Tan Sri Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Abu Hassan Othman said it offered students practical training at its super brands outlets such as Borders, Starbucks, Kenny Rogers and U-Mobile.

"This arrangement is part of Berjaya Immersion Methodology to get the students to adapt to the real world of hospitality, tourism and services education while still studying," he told Bernama in a special interview here Wednesday.

The university college will begin operations in January next year.

Prof Abu Hassan said under this programme, the students could have the opportunity to undergo between 20 and 24 weeks of industry placement.

He said the university college management believed that its innovative education methodology and the strong focus on personal attention and care for the students, would assist them to achieve their full potential and transform their aspirations into reality.

Prof Abu Hassan said the methodology was pervasive in all aspects of education delivery and curriculum at the university college, particularly in the following areas, namely Berjaya Practicum, Industry Partnerships and Berjaya Industry Placement.

"This exposure will provide students with practical insight into the industry, with a deeper understanding of the area in which they are majoring, as well as, experiencing the different cultures, operating systems and work practices in different companies.

"It is through these partnerships, that we ensure our students will obtain the best supervised practical work and gain that required real world learning experience to excel in their vocations," he added.

He noted that it was important to equip hospitality graduates, both locals and foreigners, with first-class technical and professional expertise, including insightful business knowledge, to help them earn the respect and recognition.

Prof Dr Abu Hassan said the university college had also set up a coffee academy and chocolate laboratory for the culinary arts students, besides setting up gourmet cafe, culinary retail shop, demonstration kitchens, production and pastry kitchen and others.

For the initial stage, the university college is offering five programmes. They are Diploma in Culinary Arts, Diploma in Hospitality Management, Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management, Bachelor of Hospitality Management (Honours) and Bachelor of Tourism Management (Honours).

Courses in Foundation in Hospitality, Tourism and Services, Diploma in Retail Management, Diploma in Events Management, Bachelors of Retail Management (Honours) and Bachelor of Events Management (Honours) and a few other programmes are pending approval from the higher education ministry.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Berjaya University College of Hospitality (BUCH) yesterday launched its website, which is designed to do more than just provide information on the institution.

"We also hope to educate the public on the challenging and vibrant world of hospitality, tourism and services," Berjaya Higher Education chief operating officer Mae Ho said.

"We will use the website to creatively disseminate accurate and insightful information about the industry and build in students a passion to excel in the industry before they embark on their learning journey with us," she said at the launch.

The website features two interactive elements – Discovery and Butler B Interactive.

Discovery, with the tagline "Discover the Global Approach. Experience The Real World", contains a series of related online and real-world activities for the public to take part in.

For starters, it will host Discovery Challenge — a contest in which SPM school leavers answer questions on the tourism industry online, with a chance to win prizes. The contest runs from Dec 13 to 27.

Butler B Interactive features a blue animated character which will interact with visitors to the site in a lighthearted manner, and through flash games, educate them on the challenges faced by people in the hospitality and tourism industry.

Ho said a career in the hospitality industry is a lucrative choice for students, the industry having generated US$856 billion (RM3 trillion) worldwide last year.

"This phenomenal growth coupled with an increase in consumer demand has raised industry standards and expectations on the knowledge and skills that graduates should have," she added.

Ho said BUCH will provide a unique and diverse educational experience to students through internships at Berjaya Group hotels.

"If you look at the number of hotels, resorts and businesses that we are in, and the golf clubs we have, compared to any other conglomerate.

"In terms of resorts, we have Langkawi, Redang, Tioman, and where city hotels are concerned, we have hotels in London and we have just bought two in Hanoi," Ho, adding that BUCH graduates would not only be trained at Berjaya hotels and resorts, but also the tourism industry as a whole.

"Berjaya’s resorts and hotels will only enrich our teaching, which many other places cannot provide," she said.

Ho said students could also work at food and beverage retail franchises operated by the group.

BUCH vice-chancellor Tan Sri Abu Hassan Othman said that besides education, the institution would also research trends in the tourism and hospitality industry.

"The emphasis on research is part of our dedication to exploring critical trends in the hospitality, tourism and services industry, and pursuing research that will contribute towards the advancement of the industry," he said.

"We hope that by starting (the website) today, through something as simple and innovative as Butler B, potential students will have the chance to start understanding, and eventually appreciating hospitality as more than just working in hotels and restaurants, but a career that encapsulates the art of professional leadership and services across the board," Abu Hassan said.

BUCH will see its first intake of about 200 students on Jan 7 in the following programmes:-

» Diploma in Culinary Arts,

» Diploma in Hospitality Management,

» Diploma in Tourism and Travel Management,

» Bachelor of Hospitality Management; and

» Bachelor of Tourism Management.

dun talk stupid without brain ere..only fool student will work at kenny rogers after graduated..kenny rogers, starbucks etc. are for retail courses so that student learn about how to manage their own business soon..it's not for culinary arts student lor..

BUCH better than all ahaha...
