Came back from Nagoya-takayama- kanazawa-toyoma-nagoya route a few days ago

Overall, a very pleasant drive and tour. 2days of rain and cloudy skies. rather satisfying as it is my first time seeing 'real' autumn colors

Hey guys, will be my first time going to Japan! Landing in Tokyo next week. Please rate my itinerary  biggrin.gif

Nothing much to rate. If I had only 2 days in Tokyo I'd go to totally different places, but that's based on my own interests, I assume you've crafted your itinerary based on yours.

About not understanding Japanese, don't worry lar, Japan gets 20m+ tourists a year, how many of them do you think understand Japanese? Just go in point at pictures on menu can liao.

Hey guys, will be my first time going to Japan! Landing in Tokyo next week. Please rate my itinerary  biggrin.gif

I am planning on spending 2 days in Tokyo and I want to explore and visit attractions these areas and do the following:

Day 1:
Ryogoku
- Edo-Tokyo Museum
- The Japanese Sword Museum
- Kyu-Yasuda Teien Garden

Akihabara
- @Home Cafe

Day 2:
Shinjuku
- Shinjuku Gyoen
- Omoide Yokocho

Shibuya
- Magnet by Shibuya 109

I have also been very fascinated about eating Japanese food, but have heard that a lot of the restaurants write their menus in Japanese.  cry.gif  I did some looking on Facebook and stumbled on this website called Doot. I have never been to Japan and can barely speak it but if I can get a local person to go with me, that would be great!

Have any of you tried using it?

I’ll be driving for 10 days in Hokkaido this December with 3 young kids.
(1) Is it easy to find a rest area for toilet stops or some light bites? What should I look out for?
(2) Is it convenient to use Waze in Japan?
(3) anyone has experience driving in Hokkaido? Can you share what I need to be prepared on?

Also, as I will be arriving in the New Chitose airport, it says that we can buy the So-Net SIM card through a vending machine at this airport.
(1) has anyone used so-net before? How reliable is the network
(2) is it easy to setup the SIM card on an iPhone 8 Plus?

Thank you in advance for your replies.

1. Yes, there are many convenience stores (Familymart, Lawson, 7-11, Seicomart) with toilets inside the store along the main roads. And of course, they sell food and drinks. Sometimes, you will find family/tourist parks along the main road where there are toilets in it. Drive slowly so that you don't miss it. The road signboards (indicating there are toilets in the park - using the normal symbol of man and woman) are usually obvious and clear.

2. I even bother to use Waze in Japan. No jam.

3. Yes, but not during winter. So, I'm not sure how is it like driving during winter. Anyway, the speed limit can be as low as 40km/h in some stretches.

I used pocket wifi when i was in Hokkaido. So, I'm not sure about SIM card.

I suggest u get some food and a picnic cloth before going to Shinjuku Gyoen. The locals enjoy their picnics and u can easily blend in and experience picnic there. Weather was super nice when I went there last week. Also, don't go too late. It gets dark around 4pm. Enjoy!

Download google translator (or explore any other translator apps). Point your camera on the japanese words.. they will direct translate it once it scan on it. Thou the screen could make you dizzy, but minimally you can still get the meaning out of those words. It can also translate your spoken language too.. though the vocal translation I never try. My last 2 visits.. body language works well. Hahaha...

I order food by pointing pictures usually .. as their pictures are the reason I walk into the shop and it give me appetite.. the translated blur wording only make me diet.. dizzy ady.. no need eat.

How is the weather in Tokyo/Osaka now? Cold or just nice without jacket/autumn clothes?
*
Osaka is about like Genting's weather, I can walk around in city at night without jacket. But different people different cold tolerance. Light jacket should be enough.

1 more week till I fly off to Osaka. While this is not my first trip there, I'm a bit anxious about my trip planning. I have attached my itinerary in the spoiler below. Is it too packed? Travelling in a group of 4, gf and I with our mums and we are aiming for a relatively chill pace for this trip.

Have settled acco, booked pocket wifi (roaming man) but I need inputs regarding whether a Kansai Thru Pass is worth it. Also, since I'll be travelling by AA and am arriving quite late does the NAMBA OCAT still run?

Another thing I need help with is recommendations on must eat places in Kyoto/Osaka/Nara. Any suggestions on must-not-miss places?

Any comments will be appreciated.

Don't expect the grammar will be 100% accurate, but at least it brings out the rough idea of the sentence. laugh.gif

Same goes to you when you sending your voice note to translate, use simple words.

Eh. Sorry, I forgot. But what’s the operation hours of JR trains in Osaka, yeah? Planning to get on the earliest train possible to Bamboo Forest. Search in JR website but it only show me ETA of trains. If I remember correctly, it’s around 5, yeah?

Yah.. it is very dizzy. But this is consider an easiest and cheap option for DIY ppl like us. Some app can take a snapshot then only translate.. won't be tat dizzy.. but of coz slower compare to the lens over.. immediate translate.

Order food is pretty easy.. point picture will do. I use this app more for shopping, to scan through the package.. at least I know won't mix up .. buying lotion vs shampoo. Just like the horse-oil produce.. the only word we know is horse-oil, and for the last 2 trips still dare not buy.. dunno what is this for.. so many different products.. at least now i know.. they have wide range.. from shampoo, lotion, etc.. and I won't mess up using lotion as shampoo.
