To all newcomers on this thread, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do some research first. There are tons of info about traveling in Japan all at the tips of your fingers, just a google click away (and plenty of info listed on this post). There are many resident forumers here on this thread that are super friendly and helpful so please do not annoy them with questions like "What to see in Tokyo?", "Recommend me sightseeing places in Kyoto" "What is the weather in Tokyo now" or similar questions. Narrow down your questions and list down your expectations/requirements so that we can provide you with more accurate advices.

In addition, do not ask for itineraries. Come up with your own itinerary and enlist forumers' help with checking, giving advices and recommendations. We understand travelling in Japan is not easy especially if you are a first-timer but note that we discourage spoon feeding.

Japan: Season & Weather

Spring / 春 (March to May)
The plum blossoms (“ume” / “梅”) bloom in late February, signaling that a welcome spring is around the corner. The mild spring season brings out Japan’s beautiful cherry blossoms (“sakura” / “桜”), which are enjoyed from late March through April throughout the country. By May, temperatures are comfortable and vegetation has grown lush.

Summer / 夏 (June to August)
Summer kicks off with the dreary rainy season (“tsuyu” / “梅雨”) from June to July, during which hydrangea (“ajisai” / “アジサイ”) blossoms can be seen shrouded in mist. This is followed by screaming cicadas (“semi” / “セミ”) and intense heat and humidity that peaks in August—watch out for mould. Spectacular, large-scale fireworks displays are held in the summer months throughout Japan.

Autumn / 秋 (September to November)
The transition into autumn is marked by typhoons and heavy rain, beginning in August and lasting until September. Weather cools pleasantly in October, and November weather is relatively dry and mild. Gorgeous red and golden leaves (kouyou 紅葉) such as Japanese maple and ginkgo can be enjoyed through early December.

Winter / 冬 (December to February)
December is the start of ski season, and Japan’s snow country regions are famous for deep and consistent powder snow conditions. In Tokyo, winter is cold, sunny, and dry, and the city experiences only a few days major of snowfall in January or February. Winter illuminations, marvelous spectacles of light displayed in cities, compensate for a lack of vegetation and short daylight hours.

2. How is the Usage of Credit Card in Japan? Is it widely accepted?
While Japan is a cash based country, Credit Card is commonly used in many places - from department stores, drugstores, taxis to convenient stores (yes, 7-11,Family Mart etc), you don't have to worry about cash as you shop. So when do you need cash? In neighborhood restaurants, small shops, markets, and at (rural) ryokans, just to name a few. You will also need cash to pay for your train and bus ticket/ pass.

QUOTE
You’ll find that large shops, supermarkets and hotels accept credit and debit cards, as will most taxis. But smaller souvenir shops, neighborhood restaurants, local market stalls and traditional Japanese ryokan limit their transactions to cash. This is also the case for most guesthouses operated by private owners.

If you buy a low-cost item and pay with a large bill — such as a 10,000 yen note — you’ll typically have no problem receiving change. Whether you’re limiting your visit to a big city or plan to travel to rural areas, make sure you carry enough cash for your daily needs.

3. GUIDE: How much do I bring to Japan?

Flight, accommodation and shopping aside, you can use the below as Guideline.

--> Transport
Common mode of transport: train, subway, bus

QUOTE
Narita to Tokyo: ~¥2,500
Tokyo to Narita: ~¥2,500

Per day Travel within Tokyo: ¥1,000

Each *Side Trip (eg. Odaiba, Mitaka, Yokohama, Toyosu etc): Add on ¥1,000 (for return trip)

For example: 7 days = estimated ¥7,000 (travel within Tokyo) + ¥2,000 (2 side trips) + ¥5,000 (airport transfer)
Total: ¥14,000

*Assumption from Shinjuku station to side trip locations.
*Side trip not inclusive of Hakone/ Fuji 5 Lakes, Kamakura, Nikko etc as those has packages to cater for it.

--> Food
There is the budget way and the luxury way; everyone have different spending pattern/ habit. We’ll look at something average (comfortable):-

QUOTE
Breakfast in Café + Drink: ¥600 (eg. in Doutor)
Lunch: ¥1,200 (drinks are given complimentary in restaurants)
Dinner: ¥2,000 (drinks are given complimentary in restaurants)
Additional - Snacks you buy from shopping streets etc : ¥500
Coffee/ tea time: ¥1,000

Estimated per day: ¥5,300
Estimated for 7 days: ¥37,100

Budget way:
Lunch & Dinner – look for restaurants that serve food at below ¥1,000 per bowl/set or convenience stores bento/ food.

Shopping - own budget. A box of Shiroi Koibito costs between ¥800 - ¥3,000+. Simple keychain, luggage tag cost around ¥500 each. Will recommend souvenir shopping at Daiso (¥100 per item) and/or Don Quijote (short for Donki).

6. Hotel Booking Websites (Please compare 1st)
- The usual Agoda.com, Booking.com, Asiarooms.com, Hotels.com, Expedia.com.
- Also check out Airbnb listings. Plenty of them around Japan.
- Some recommendations that I've personally stayed in before are Toyoko Inn & APA Hotel which are usually located in convenient locations near train stations all around Japan.

7.2 ARRIVAL Card/ Disembarkation Card

During your flight to Japan, it's common for Air Stewardess to distribute the Arrival Card for you to fill. This is a compulsory card for all foreigners going in to any country. There may be cases whereby you were asleep while they distribute the card and thus may have missed it. You can request from the Air Stewardess or fill the form at the desk/ counter right before the queue for Immigration. However, you're advised to fill it in the plane when you have the time. Queue at immigration may be long so if you stopped by to fill your details and then queue, that may delay your time in leaving the airport.

How to fill it correctly? Please take note that there have been people who were denied entry due to wrong information filled.

8. Budget Food Options
- My favourite choices are Sukiya & Yoshinoya, always cheap and satisfying. There's also Matsuya, similar type of Gyudon (beef rice bowl) restaurants.
- Convenient Stores (Family Mart, Lawsons, 7 Elevens, Circle K, etc.) are found almost everywhere and food is plenty and affordable.
- Supermarkets usually sell cheap cheap prepared meals after a certain time.

14. Emergency/ Disaster
It is not uncommon for Japan to be strike with earthquake and tsunami. However, as foreigners without proper training to manage the situation, it is easy for us to panic. Please go through some of the sites below to understand what you should do when disaster strikes while you are on a trip.

QUOTE
"All smartphones in Japan have an earthquake/ tsunami alert system installed, hence, about 5 to 10 seconds before a disaster strikes the warning system should give people a precious few extra seconds to escape to a safer place or duck under the table. When the alert goes off a buzzing noise is heard, and a voice keeps saying “Jishin desu! Jishin desu” (meaning “There is an earthquake”) until the earthquake stops.

Since an earthquake that happens in a coastal area is more likely to generate a tsunami, a warning system improvement contributes to minimizing the loss of lives and property by giving an alert 5-10 minutes before the tsunami comes. Also, the Japan Meteorological Agency has installed more than 200 seismic forecast stations across the country, and on a larger scale the Ministry of Disaster Prevention has set up 800 stations for the creation of the warning system. With all the information gathered from the seismic stations, the government staff can immediately analyze the data, identify the scope of the disaster, as well as predict the time of occurrence time in each location and accordingly launch a warning to the people so citizens can be prepared." - http://jpninfo.com/50905

QUOTE
Moving Schedule
Tsukiji's inner market is scheduled to close on October 6, 2018, followed by the move of businesses from October 7 to 10, and the opening of Toyosu Market on October 11. Afterwards, Tsukiji's inner market will be torn down, and a new market is proposed to be built in its place sometime after the 2020 Olympics. Tsukiji's popular outer market with its many restaurants and numerous retail shops will remain in business beyond October 2018.

KANSAI Good Tip for Unique Open Air Coach contributed by yooyin

QUOTE
Ticket can be purchased online (via Klook) and just pick up ticket at KIX or OSAKA Airport. To experience Unique Open Air Coach "The Rich" (Coach No.5) which is the best, tickets are only available as a same-day ticket in Sagano-line Station booth. You need to specifically inform the staff that you want Coach Number 5, otherwise, they will give you normal coach (window).

Recommendation: Do the Sagano Train in the morning from Kameoka torokko station backwards to Arashiyama torokko station. Take JR line to Umahori Station, then walk to Kameoka torokko Station. Be there 30 minutes or earlier to secure ticket. Ticket counter opens 8.50am at Kameoka torokko station and depending on the crowd in the station, if there are 20+ people already in queue, it's likely they will open up 5-10 minutes earlier to ease up the crowd.

Congratulations on the new thread, and thread starter position.

Let's start the ball rolling by a question.

In your opinion, how early should one exchange currency prior to visiting Japan? What are the best practices ? As we all may or may not know Japan is a cash-centric country and credit cards may not be accepted in most places.
*
Thank you wink.gif

Highly dependent when it comes to currency. Back in 2016, yen went up and before we know it, hit RM40+ mark (for 1,000yen). So in order to maximize the value, best to change some and keep when MYR is strong (or yen is weak). The benchmark one can use:

Expensive/ high: 1,000 yen = >RM40
Moderate: 1,000 yen = RM38-RM39
Time to change some: 1,000 yen = <RM37

Rather than best practices, it's highly dependent on individual. I have observed different patterns among my friends/ acquaintances.
There are people who prefers to change lump sum last minute (a week or few days leading up to trip, ignoring whatever the exchange rate may be), then there are those who changes a little each month to keep in order to minimize damage nearer to trip.

Whichever type you are, now is a good time to change some Yen if you're heading to Japan in the next coming month(s).

Hello guys, Need some help to prepare for Hokkaido itinerary next year Dec.
I know there are 10 threads before this but anyone willing to share me his / her itinerary ?

Would really appreciate that.

Thinking to spend about 6days in Hokkaido. Will it be too long ?
*
Nope, this is not the place to ask for itinerary. Even when you ask, you shall not receive.

If you're really lazy, there's a shortcut: GOOGLE.

Come up with the itinerary and get forumers' help to run through and comment. That's the thing we do here.

Breakfast mostly will be 7e/family mart.
Anyone can suggest when to insert Dotonbori/Shinsaibashi?
Is it cheaper to buy winter jacket at Osaka?
And any food recommendations as well  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif  rclxm9.gif

Your itinerary is pretty packed for each day; are you sure you're able to do all hmm.gif Eg. Day 2: Arashiyama, Nishiki and Potoncho before lunch hour... seems a little rushed. That's 3 places in 3-4 hours' time, not taking account the travelling time. Unless you just do 'touch n go' style, then I guess it's possible.

For Day 3 - it's also very packed; will suggest spending a full day in Nara instead of only 1/2 day. There are also nice temples to visit in the area.

Gotta cut out some places to accommodate Dotonbori haha otherwise I really can't see where it can be squeezed in. Estimate at least 2-3 hours in Dotonbori. If you enjoy shopping, may need more time than that.

Not sure on winter jacket - it depends whether you're looking for branded or simply any jacket will do?

Thanks for your indepth reply. Will keep the benchmark in mind.
I too would follow this approach of changing little by little when visiting a foreign country.
This is applies to the whole nation of Japan? Or like in Malaysia some area/state only off.
*
Much welcome, it's just an indication. You can study the currency pattern online as well. In early 2016, the exchange rate was 1,000yen = RM32+. But many doubt that the drop this time will go as low as that. We're already rejoicing at 36+.

Accommodation is fine - you can stay wherever you find is decent. Generally in Japan, all areas are fine. However Ginza is usually viewed as "atas" biggrin.gif You'll enjoy Ginza if you're there on a weekend. From 12 noon onwards they close off the Chuo Dori and only allow pedestrians to roam around the road.

On Day 2 - I can assure you that Yoyogi Park and Shinjuku Gyoen is different. One is a park, another one is a garden. If you go to the park on a weekend, it's very nice. You'll see a lot of people picnicking, strolling with their dogs, children playing badminton or running around, people working out in the area etc. You can bring food and find a decent spot to have your picnic there.

As for Shinjuku Gyoen, it's a Garden. You'll have to pay 200yen to enter the garden. It's huge with several different sections (Japanese garden, Chinese garden, French etc). For me, the garden was enjoyable because I went in autumn and the leaves were truly a magnificent sight.

So looking at your itinerary, I will actually suggest that you go to Yoyogi Park instead, as you'll be visiting Meiji shrine. Also, a park will be more enjoyable for a toddler rather than the Garden (just my opinion though).

Don't forget to try the Harajuku crepe in Takeshita Dori, and also drop by the Daiso there!

On Day 5 - As an alternative, I will recommend Odaiba.

"Odaiba, located on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay is an all-day destination that has several kid-friendly attractions including the Miraikan: National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation, Daikanransha (Ferris Wheel), Sony Explora Science and Decks Tokyo Beach (restaurants)."

In Odaiba, there's also a trick art museum around, indoor amusement Joypolis, Fuji TV exhibits and the wonderful view of rainbow bridge + statue of Liberty on DECKS at night.

hi guys...will be going Japan April 2018 (first time)

I will be going Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka - Nara - Tokyo

1) Will it be better to stay in Kyoto and Osaka  or do day trip from Osaka daily? will be in Osaka 3 nights and Kyoto 2 nights. The thought of moving luggage from one place to another and thinking where I can store them if cannot check in accommodation early ? I checked Kyoto and Osaka is 30 mins apart so if I do day trip from Osaka-Kyoto daily will be 1 hour just for travelling.

Which accomodation plan will be better?
a. Stay 2 nights kyoto then 3 nights osaka
b. Stay all 5 nights in Osaka
2) Plan to purchase JR Pass 7 days + Osaka Amazing Pass. Are there any better/cheaper option? Worth to get Osaka Amazing pass since I already have JR Pass? Also putting these two passes into consideration for point number 1.

Thanks guys.
*
It doesn't matter whether you stay all 5 nights in Osaka and do daily trip to Kyoto, or 2 nights in Kyoto/ 3 nights in Osaka. Like you said, the distance is not far. This is dependent on individual preference and whether you have a big group. If there's a lot of you including the elderly/ children, will suggest to stay put in 1 location to minimize moving around with luggage. But this is just my 2 cents.

Day 12: Tokyo  Malaysia
*
Day 10: If you're going Shinjuku Gyoen, be prepared to spend 2-3 hours there. That's easily 1/2 day gone; so I doubt you're able to do any morning shopping.
Check opening hours of Shibuya 109. Malls in Japan close pretty early eg. 8pm or earlier, unlike Malaysia's operating hours.

Maybe around RM3000 for 6 ppl? I dont mind paying a little more if its worth it. Thanks   notworthy.gif

Maybe you can share if there's any specific meal you're looking for (eg. Kobe Beef).

There's a highly recommended restaurant by the Japanese. Maybe you can look for more info before deciding - Premium Pound Sanjo-Kiyamachi:

anybody got any recommendation for hotel/ryokan in Takayama?

So freaking surprise to see accommodation fully booked for the peak period of 14-16 April so early....
*
How many nights? Is it a quick stopover or you'll be staying for several days there?

Stayed in K's House Takayama when I was there, and had a good stay. The room and bathroom isn't spacious, but it's decent. There's also a kitchen where you can cook, use their fridge facility and a dining area with TV.

Hi guys, I'm planning to visit Osaka & Kyoto this 18/6 - 29/6. Which part should I stay longer and should i start from Osaka or Kyoto first? Any recommendation?
I'm going there with my friend and we planning to visit the castle and whatnot in both Kyoto and Osaka. We also plan to book airbnb for both in Osaka & Kyoto. Do you guys have any recommendation which area should be stay too? Thank u senpai!  notworthy.gif
*
It'll be dependent on your itinerary. If you'll be doing more days in Osaka, then you'll stay longer there too. Optionally, you can choose to stay in Osaka and travel daily to Kyoto.

For only 2 people, you may want to consider Hotel as well. While airbnb ain't a bad choice but it's usually more value for bigger groups of 3-4 pax and above. You may want to check out both Hotel and AirBnB price & facilities before deciding.

QUOTE(tohff7 @ Jan 2 2018, 12:56 PM)
My original plan is to stay 2 days on 14-15 Apr for the Spring festival. But it looks quite impossible now with all accomodations fully booked. So, I'm in the midst of re-adjusting my itinerary and looking for alternative suggestion. For that leg, it is supposed to be Tokyo --> Kanazawa --> Gokayama/Shirakawago --> Takayama --> Kurobe Alpine Route --->Nagano/Tokyo.

Some alternatives that I'm considering

1) Stay a night in Takayama on 13 April, enjoy the festival in 14th and take train out in the evening to Toyama. Stay the night in Toyama (14th) and ready for Kurobe Alpine Route on 15th. Staying a night in Toyama seems better than my original plan because trains departing Takayama to Toyama is less frequent (earliest train is 5.30, next is 7.40 and reach Toyama 8am and 10am respectively)

2) I also has the option to stay in a ryokan/hotel in Takayama for 12-13 Apr night, but was wondering if it's worth it. Without the festival, I think Takayama can be covered with just a night stay? Also thinking whether i should spend additional on ryokan if i'll be out most of the time.

3) Still researching other nearby places like Gero and Hida Furukawa, but of course, accommodation is quite heavily booked as well

Also, are there any other interesting places to visit as well along the Hokuriku Shinkansen line? I looked at Kurobe Gorge but the route only open in May.
*
Depends on what time you arrive in Takayama on 13th, or how much time you have. Wished I had at least 1 full day in Takayama to explore. If you have a full day minus the festival, it's quite sufficient to cover the key attractions. Gero is more popular for its Onsen; not sure about Furukawa.

If i had another day in Takayama (eg around 2 days), Shinhotaka Ropeway will be one of the attraction I'll go for.

Ohh, I definitely have the time to adjust accordingly since I have yet to fix anything lol.

Starting early in Kanazawa, then travel to Gokayama/Shirakawago, then onwards to Takayama - I suppose I'll reach Takayama around evening?
*
Evening ah? I'll assume approximately 3-4pm. There's nothing much you can do around that time coz it gets dark early. Will suggest to do a 3 days 2 nights in Takayama so that it's less rushed. At least on Day 2 you have a full day to enjoy, then checkout on 3rd day.

Thanks for your input.

I'm planning for 12-14 Apr and it seems freaking impossible to get decent accomodation at decent price. For now, I think i will likely do this way

12 Apr - Depart Kanazawa. Visit Shirakawago and reach Takayama in evening. Spend the night in Takayama (probably just a cheap and decent hostel/hotel)
13 Apr - Travel to Hirayu Onsen area for Shin-Hotaka Ropeway. Spend the night at a ryokan there.
14 Apr - Check out and spend the day in Takayama for the festival. Take late evening train to Toyama and spend the night there.

Wondering if I'll miss out anything in Takayama if i do it this way  hmm.gif sweet_pez

Eh your ShirakawaGo only day trip? Not staying overnight in the gassho zukuri?

Better check the bus schedule. If you want to visit the villages of ShirakawaGo, it has to be early. Visitors can only enter some of the village from 10am-4pm. By 4pm, outsiders not staying in the village cannot access the place. And the last bus that leaves the village is quite early. I think it's before 4pm. Do check on Hyperdia.

However if you only have plans to drop by a nearby village and take photo from Viewing Point, then I believe it's possible.

14th Apr seems doable. You can just do few things in Takayama before the festival - morning market, shrine, Hida Folk Village, Sanmachi suji etc. Maybe spend less time at the shrine. You'll have to take a bus to Hida Folk Village. I stayed in K's Hostel and the staff told us it's also accessible by bike, which is available for free (by the Hostel). But sadly, it was Winter and friends didn't like the idea of cycling in the cold dry.gif

Still haven't decided whether to stay at Shirakawago. I think i mentioned before to my other half but she doesn't seems to be keen. Anyway, my schedule is flexible and i can easily fit in a day for Shirakawago.

I'll spend a day in Kanazawa, so no issue for me to start early to travel to Shirakawago the next day (in case i'm not staying overnight at Shirakawago)
*
The gassho-zukuri have to be booked several months in advance. We were lucky to be able to book 2 months prior to our trip, but that also was the last 2 available rooms in ShirakawaGo laugh.gif

Spring is peak, best for you two to decide asap.

Hi, Anyone taken a flight route like this? Your opinion, how risky it will be? As the stopover is below 3 hours, any delay will jeopardized my connecting flight. Any advise will be appreciated. Tq
*
Don't have to worry. It's just a short transit via the same Airline. So even if your arrival to Hanoi is late, the flight to Osaka will wait (unless delayed by too long).

And yes, like sacwoc mentioned - you don't have to check in/ out from the immigration. I believe VN will require you to stopover at the Transit Counter to check-in after you've arrived in Hanoi.

Hello travellers, I am travelling to Japan and for now stuck with which WiFi options are available (Prepaid Japanese sim card, roaming pass, pocket WiFi, etc) until today I come across this 3-day roaming pass that Digi is offering. Details in pic:

Wondering if anyone has used Digi roaming pass in Japan before? Is the overall experience/coverage good? Mainly using for navigation purpose so having mobile internet access can be crucial for my upcoming trip, just making sure things will alright when I travel that's why asking here.

Thanks.

Have not tried DiGi but you can give it a shot. I usually go for either Portable WiFi (depending on how many of us are travelling together) or SIM. These days I prefer SIM due to the flexibility.

You can check out the site under my Sig.

if i want to spend only 1 day at tokyo which area should i visit akihabara? Shinjuku? odaiba?
*
There are many options but also depending what you'd like to see. If it's your first time to Tokyo, place like Asakusa, Ueno and Harajuku is exciting for travelers. Optionally yes, you can visit Shinjuku for shopping, park, observatory etc.

Odaiba will be for shopping, Gundam and the view at DECKS. You can also visit FujiTV station there. You can actually go to Ginza in the morning and get down to Odaiba in the afternoon. The distance is appx 30min or so by train.

QUOTE(jianh @ Jan 8 2018, 09:46 PM)
Shinjuku should be nice for 1-day walkaround because of the concentrated point of attractions.

You need some time to travel to Odaiba and there's nothing much to visit, except the life-size Gundam and a good vantage point over looking the Rainbow Bridge, and point of attractions there require some walking distance.

For the same reason as Shinjuku, Akihabara also good for 1-day walkaround, however the whole street is for cosplay/gunpla/hentai/manga fans mostly.
*
Yes the place offers a lot of manga/ anime/ game related things but Akihabara also has BIC and many electronic stores. While you're not exactly wrong, it was not pleasant to see how you describe the place.

Hi friends,

Am traveling to Nishishinjuku Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo for work for 1 week. Am a bit worried because I am strict Indian vegetarian (no egg, no meat, no animal flesh). I have been trying to find on google for Indian vegetarian restaurants there but does not seem like anything within Nishishinjuku Shinjuku-ku area. I think my next option is to buy raw ingredients in supermarket. I am wondering if anyone of you has been to this place and if you have any advice on this. Thanks!

Also just to confirm, 2017, Malaysian passport doesn't need to get visa to enter Japan right?
*
Hi there, it will be difficult for you to find strictly Indian vegetarian place in Tokyo. In fact, it's hard to find any vegetarian restaurants in Japan. From what the Tour Guide shared in my last trip, there is no such thing as "vegetarian" in Japan; if the elderly do not want to consume meat, they simply choose meals without meat.

If you do not mind any form of vegetarian, then Google for Vegetarian restaurants in Tokyo and you'll find results. But if it has to be "Indian Vegetarian Restaurant" or meal, it's challenging. Optionally, bringing your own food seems to be the most viable choice.

Basically, i would like to ask the sifus here for recommendations on onsen(would avoid Ooedo-Onsen-Monogatari cause it's more mainstream imo) and food(sushi,yakiniku,wagyu/kobe beef) Not looking for those high end and need booking kind of sushi meal though. Think a range of 6-8k yen would be awesome enough haha. Previously ate at Sushi Daiwa and it was unforgettable.

For now, i've found Uogashi Nihon Ichi, Shunkashuutou, Sushi Hirose and Tsugu Sushimasa which looks good to me tongue.gif
i know the last 2 is more exp but if it's worth it, then why not.

Any help/comments would be appreciated. Thanks in advance smile.gif

1. Day 3 seems to be pretty busy. Will suggest you do the first 3 and leave Ginza for another day. You can also visit Ameyoko shopping street.

2. Just a suggestion - You can do Ginza in the morning of Day 4 together with Odaiba. Ginza to Odaiba is only roughly 30 min by train, and night view in the latter is what takes the cake.

Secondly, best to do Ginza on weekend. Be at Chuo Dori Ginza (Uniqlo) from 12 noon onwards; shop or walk around for 2-3 hours and then head to Odaiba. That's ideal for a day.

If I recall, there is nothing much to do in Roppongi - it's an upscale business tower area. You'll see modern architectures and sculptures.

3. If you want sushi and maybe sashimi, why not go Tsukiji on that last day you have? Best deal you can get.
Optionally, on Day 3 when you're at Asakusa, take the train (1-2 stop) to Tokyo Skytree. Go to Kaitensushi Toriton - it's one of the most popular sushi place in the area. Yes you need to queue but it's fast moving: http://www.tokyoeats.jp/kaitensushi-toriton/

QUOTE(-kytz- @ Jan 15 2018, 05:49 AM)
Would RM14k be enough for 2 people including budget Hotel + AA Flight?

3 nights at Osaka, 4 nights at Kyoto, 4 nights at Tokyo

Travelling around by train mostly and won't be eating expensive food all the time except for a few..
*
It's hard to calculate that way because it'll depend on how much you purchase your flight and hotel. If you want to do Tokyo-Osaka and Kyoto, you should buy flight arriving at Osaka and departing from Tokyo. With that, you only need to buy 1 way Shinkansen pass.

If you booked your flight for say, RM1.5k (very cheap already if you're doing KUL-OSAKA-TOKYO-KUL) and Hotel for RM2,000, you'll still need to prepare shinkansen pass @ estimated RM450 one way. Total expenses: RM3,950. Let's just round it up to RM4,000.

Set aside RM200 for airport to city, and city to airport expenses.

Another RM600 for daily transport (for all 11 nights) and RM200 for any entry passes (not inclusive of theme park) to parks/ gardens/ other attraction with smaller fees.

That is RM5,000 aside. Now you have balance of RM2k for food and shopping. I'll assume it's 12 days and 11 nights. So I'll divide RM2k/12 days = RM166 per day. Make it RM160 per day for both food and shopping.

RM160/ 3 meals a day = roughly RM50 per meal.

You can do a nice and value breakfast @ RM20 (est. 500yen). Lunch @ RM40 (est. 1,000yen) and dinner @ RM60 (est. 1,500yen).
That's RM120 with balance of RM30-40 for shopping.

The above is an ideal costing if you manage to get RM1,500 flight.

OPTIONALLY,

If you want to save, just stick to only Tokyo or kansai area. Use that RM450 for train pass as shopping money.

Thank you and appreciate your tips! Was lowkey waiting for your reply tbh lol.
Will play around with the itinerary on Day 3. Wanted to skip Odaiba, but since we have some time, was thinking we could catch the night view.
Yea def will go Ameyoko if we are at Ueno. Been there previously, and it's like snacking every 10mins haha.
Noted on the sushi joint, looks more than decent and worth trying.

I have narrowed down my hotel choices(Shinjuku) to Hotel Granbell and Hotel Gracery. Thoughts or anyone has any experience to share?
*
laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif flattered.

Odaiba is good, it's more than the night view. You can stroll around Diver City (mall behind Gundam). There is a pretty big souvenir shop. And best of all, there's a food court on Ground Floor (i think). At the food court, there's a door that you can exit directly to see the Gundam statue.

Plenty of food choices @ food court. It's exciting to browse around and enjoy your meal there. Give it a shot icon_rolleyes.gif

Can't help ya on the Hotel. I stayed in Ikebukuro Metropolitan Hotel and it was really good (under company since it was work haha). Although Ikebukuro is not centralised (a little far from Shinjuku or other places), it's a very nice area to stay at. There are huge drugstores that closes at 2-3am? And Mutekiya 無敵家 ramen operates 24 hours, same as Ichiran 一蘭. Never have to worry about food or shopping if you want to do something in the wee hours!

QUOTE(hh_yeap @ Jan 16 2018, 04:38 PM)
hi, can anybody share their experience of process time of immigration and baggage claim in Haneda Airport ? My ETA is 10.30pm. I am not worried about catching the train of Keikyu Line but I am worried I might missed the Toei Line (Shinjuku to Nishi Shinjuku).

Is the process of exiting the Airport fast ? can be done under 40 minutes ?
*
Must be AA. It'll depend on your luck. I took AA once and the flight was early. Touched down roughly 930pm but arrived at Immigration greeted with super long queue that took almost an hour to pass. By the time we collected our luggage and rushed for the train, we barely managed to hop onto the last train.Since it was the last train, extremely packed.

So it's hard to tell what time you can catch the train because highly dependent on immigration area. Get ready for alternatives (eg. miss train then make sure there's accommodation nearby you can stay for the night).

You can walk into manga cafes. There are those that operate 24 hours and you can rent a room and sleep on the couch while charging your phone and use the washroom, as well as take a shower.
