Hi guys,

I'm currently searching for my flight tickets to Japan (travelling in Nov). Tentative Travel Date: 3 - 20 Nov 2018

This will be my 2nd trip to Japan. Travelling with my wife (3rd trip) and kid (1st trip).

So far I found Singapore Airlines to be the cheapest option at MYR 4,366.30 (2 adults; 1 child). Do u guys think the price is ok?

Attached Image

Places that we plan to go are Tokyo, Kyoto, Hakone, Kawaguchi, Yokohama (day trip) and maybe Zao village.

still a long way to November, maybe you can wait for airasia free seat
airasia free seat will be this month or next month, high chance on next month
maybe around 1k per person, transit in KLIA2
*
Yea, was thinking of waiting for the free seats from AirAsia too but I've had few bad experiences with AirAsia before so not very keen on using them. That's why rather go with other airlines if their price is not too far off.

Thank you for your suggestion ya.

Shameless re-sharing of my Zao video lol

*
Heheh.. I actually watched your video just before my earlier post. Very nice! Looks like u had a good time skiing. Is skiing available all year round at Zao? Can't seem to find this info.
I plan to do a 3D2N trip to Zao. Probably go snowboard alone since my wife is not keen and my kid is still too young.
Did u take a full day pass? Or just the 4 / 5 hours pass?

QUOTE(sweet_pez @ Feb 24 2018, 12:56 AM)
Average price of RM1400+ per pax is good! I bought my flight with SIA also around RM1450. Full carrier with all the services you can get, its certainly a good price. Especially when you have a child, do consider something more comfortable if you can afford it wink.gif 7 hours is not a short flight, so comfort should be given some weightage.

For SIA, they give this price during promo. Dont miss the promo period.
*
Yes, my thought exactly since this time I'll be travelling with a child.
Your SIA flight u took previously landed at HND airport right?

Its an upcoming trip actually haha. Yes its gonna land in Haneda but flight back to KL departure will be from Narita. Transit in SG for both ways. Not a bad idea to leave from Narita coz I certainly want to stock up Shiroi Koibito and buy some souvenirs. The unfortunate part though is flight @ 10am. Have to check what time the shops open sweat.gif
*
Ah....ok. Upcoming flight. Nice.
Mine will be from PG > SG > HND. Will discuss with my wife on the SIA flight tickets since the price is a good deal according to u guys smile.gif
Shiroi Koibito is tasty! Departing from Narita is good also cos got more shops and better amenities. Only downside is its further away from Tokyo.

That's a good deal. You can also try ANA and JAL to get the full Japanese experience. On ANA and JAL they serve bento boxes that are really good. I got my tickets via ANA two years ago for RM1.5k per pax. My upcoming trip via JAL is RM1.9k which I felt is expensive but at that time it was cheaper than ANA.

ANA's in-flight service is impeccable. The air stewardess are not only friendly but pretty as well (FYI I'm a straight girl) XD
*
Thanks! Will certainly check out ANA/JAL also. Nvr been on any of them before.
Point noted on ANA's air stewardess innocent.gif

Gonna be an interesting trip this round with my little one.

Gotta start researching for Airbnb, DisneyLand tickets, places to go, etc...
Any of u guys done a 3D2N at Tokyo Disneyland? Planning to stay at Tokyo Disney Celebration Hotel. Looks like the cheapest option among the other Disney themed hotels.

how many days are you going ?
got kyoto in between...hmmm
i agree with sweet_pez

18 days. Travelling on 2 Nov - 19 Nov.
Enough to fit Kyoto in between smile.gif
Will probably spend 3 nights at Kyoto. Taking it slow and easy as we're bringing our kid with us on this trip. Not going to rush on this trip else we won't enjoy it.

Note:
* Will be travelling with a 2 year old child.
* Prefer slow pace trip.
* Both me and my wife have visited Japan previously and have done Hakone Freepass.
* This is just a rough idea of where we will be during our Japan trip in Nov. Nothing is finalized yet except for the flight tickets.

Date Place
Day 1 (Fri, 2 Nov) Arrive at Haneda Airport @ 9.40pm. Depart to AirBnB at Shinjuku.
Day 2 (Sat, 3 Nov) Visit Shinjuku Gyoen Garden + Takeshita Street
Day 3 (Sun, 4 Nov) Visit Odaiba + 1 TBC place
Day 4 (Mon, 5 Nov) Depart to AirBnB at Chiba. Visit Moff Animal Cafe or Mother Farm
Day 5 (Tues, 6 Nov) Disneyland Day 1
Day 6 (Wed, 7 Nov) Disneyland Day 2
Day 7 (Thurs, 8 Nov) Depart to Kyoto. Free and easy.
Day 8 (Fri, 9 Nov) Kyoto Full Day
Day 9 (Sat, 10 Nov) Kyoto Full Day
Day 10 (Sun, 11 Nov) Kyoto Full Day
Day 11 (Mon, 12 Nov) Depart to Hakone? or Kawaguchiko?
Day 12 (Tues, 13 Nov) Hakone / Kawaguchiko Full Day
Day 13 (Wed, 14 Nov) Hakone / Kawaguchiko Full Day
Day 14 (Thurs, 15 Nov) Hakone / Kawaguchiko Full Day
Day 15 (Fri, 16 Nov) Depart back to Tokyo before noon. Explore around Shibuya
Day 16 (Sat, 17 Nov) Akihabara + 1 TBC place to visit
Day 17 (Sun, 18 Nov) Yokohama Day Trip
Day 18 (Mon, 19 Nov) Free and easy. Flight back at 10.50pm

Questions:
1) Is it worth getting Japan Rail Way Pass? If yes, should I go with a 14-day pass and which day should I start using it?
2) From Kyoto, can I take a train direct to Kawaguchiko or I must go through Hakone first?
3) Any other suggestions/recommendations? Should I switch things around a bit to make travel more convenient? Like maybe from Tokyo > Hakone/Kawaguchiko > Kyoto > Tokyo

Thank you for your time and I welcome any feedback notworthy.gif

Answer:
1. Yes. Jr Pass nationwide is kinda essential. Shud start the day u depart to Kyoto and end on the day u go back to Tokyo. From your schedule, probably start Day 7 end with Day 13. U might wanna re-adjust your trip for Hakone or Kawaguchiko. If u in Hakone, Jr train pass is useful. But if lake kawaguchiko, jr train only travel to half and another half by private railway.
2. Both have few exchange, check here for more info: http://www.hyperdia.com/
3. If your pass is one week, u might consider those place that have more usage on the pass like Tokyo > Hakone > Kyoto > Tokyo, longer journey with Jr.
*
Thank you for the suggestion. Yes, I'm thinking of getting the 7 day pass, not sure about 14 days pass as it costs RM 600 extra per pax. Will have to make some consideration.
Hyperdia is pretty useful. I've bookmarked it

QUOTE(lyc1982 @ Mar 23 2018, 09:56 AM)
no osaka or nara ?

osaka / nara has more stuff for kids...
*
No, me and my wife have been to both Osaka and Nara previously. So I think this round will skip it and just concentrate on Kyoto + Hakone + Kawaguchiko
I enjoyed Nara though smile.gif

QUOTE(sweet_pez @ Mar 23 2018, 10:21 AM)

I like your itinerary, it's relaxing and accommodating for children.

1. Yes, since you're going both Tokyo and Kyoto. However sacwoc has also mentioned it's worth checking the domestic flight price as sometimes it could be cheaper.
2. Kawaguchiko and Hakone are two different areas that is several hours apart.
3. It's not an issue, your itinerary seems fine. You've both visited Japan and know what to expect/ how to get around.

Day 3: Maybe you can bring your family to Asakusa then take a water bus from Asakusa to Odaiba. I'm sure your kids will love it biggrin.gif
http://www.gotokyo.org/en/tourists/info/access/access5.html

Day 16: Probably consider Ueno or Nakano area. I personally like Nakano because it has plenty to see and shop.
*

Thanks for your time and feedback.
Wow, the water bus is interesting. Never knew about this. I've put this into my Itinerary To-Do list. Seems appropriate to add into Day 3 since I will be visiting Odaiba on Day 3 also.

Hi guys,

Looking for recommendation for affordable accomodation near to Shinjuku station from 2 - 5 Nov. I've searched through AirBnB and also Agoda. Not cheap sad.gif
Appreciate if anyone could provide recommendations/suggestions.
Just recently booked 4D3N at Mystays Hotel near Urayasu from 5 - 8 Nov.

There are tons of hotel in Shinjuku but your definition of affordable is vague. How much is affordable? 10K yen? 100K yen? And how many person?
*
My bad.. Affordable as in the range of RM 150 - RM 280 per night. 2 adults and 1 child (2 years of age).
I've searched Agoda, AirBnB and Booking.com. Most of them are in the range of RM 380 - RM 500.
Before the Minpaku law was regulated, u could easily get a decent AirBnB from RM 100 - RM 200 per night in Shinjuku area cry.gif

That is really tight. In Japan, they calculate by person instead of room. But normally 2years old can stay for free. Furthermore your date includes weekend which is more expensive. The website i use in Japan is www.jalan.net. I did a search for you in Japanese and found this two:

https://www.jalan.net/uw/uwp3200/uww3201ini...llbackHistFlg=1

https://www.jalan.net/uw/uwp3200/uww3201ini...llbackHistFlg=1

However if you go to their English site, you are not able to search as your stay is more than 3 months away.
*
Thanks for your time to help me search. Never heard of www.jalan.net, probably because its in Japanese.
But I'll definitely check out the website when I'm back home later smile.gif

Cheers!

Optionally, you can try Sakura Hotel. The cheapest is at Nippori, a room for 2 people (tatami style, which i think your child can sleep in the middle) @ 7,100yen. I believe this meets your budget. Nippori is about 20min away from Shinjuku (station) by train. Just take note that if you stay far away from the main hub (also depending on your itinerary), you may end up spending more money and time taking trains/ transiting. Best to map your itinerary out and plan well, especially with a child along.

Sakura Hotel also have branches in Ikebukuro, Asakusa etc but the price is higher there (easily 1-2kyen higher).

Check it out here: https://www.sakura-hotel.co.jp/ (in English, no worries)
When you search, just choose "Private" and 2 pax.
*
Thanks for your suggestion sweet_pez, also, I read about your misfortune during your trip. Sometimes we overlook things, even the simplest thing. But hey, lesson learnt smile.gif
And u had a great trip, thats what matters.

Yes, my ideal location is nearby Shinjuku station as we can get about easily but might consider other locations nearby.
I've stayed at Empire Hotel near to Shin-Okubo. Location is not bad but already fully booked on 2 - 5 Nov.

QUOTE(r2t2 @ Jul 10 2018, 01:57 PM)
Ya, seems like only RM400+ listings available for private rooms/whole apartments, for those dates.  For that price, might as well stay in hotels/inns nearer to Shinjuku main station.
My friends and I had to book a RM700/nite place within walking distance from Shinjuku station; but there are 5 of us, and with the coupon, luckily accommodation expenses didn't increase.
And yeap, before the enforced law, so many cheaper AirBnB choices (for 4-5ppl) around Shinjuku station.

Another thing, not sure whether related to Minpaku law or not (which stipulates that a management desk has to be nearby for customer service, local council has more power in enforcing further regulations, etc.), some of the AirBnB listings in Tokyo don't allow self-check in, i.e. need to get keys from the hosts.  So, example if the check-in time limit is from 3pm-11pm, and your arrival flight to HND/NRT is 10pm+, then those can be crossed off, even though the places are nice and fit your budget.  bye.gif (I tried to message the host to extend the key collection time, but to no avail).  Here's where hotels/inns win over those AirBnB listings; check-in time flexibility, concierge services, and leaving luggages at the lobby after checkout.
*
I totally get you as I started browsing around AirBnB weeks before the Minpaku law was enforced. Huge difference in terms of pricing cry.gif
Now searching around hotels that is nearby a JR station (not necessary Shinjuku station as the price is quite high).
Came across Changtee Hotel located at Ikebukuro. Putting this in my list for now.

Oh dear... so geng! I love how you're both doing this for your child. That's also a good idea, but by throwing old clothes i don't think it'll make much space for the bag though, or does it? These days it's popular with the vacuum bag so you can remove all the air and use less space in the baggage. It helps a lot. My friend was amazed with how I stuff everything of 5-6 shopping bags into my baggage.
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

*
Now that u mentioned about the vacuum bag... I need to get one!
Also, is it safe/legal to do jogging in the street of Japan? I know that during Autumn, daytime starts early and also ends early. My son and wife will still be sleeping in the morning so I plan to do some jogging in the early morning. I've never done this on my first trip so I'm a bit curious/cautious as to how Japanese people will think if they see a foreigner jogging along the walkway. I hope its not illegal?

Ohh... okok. Even on the sidewalk also not allowed I guess. Thanks for your advise.
When I'm in Tokyo on the first 3 days, I'll be staying at Cerezo Hotel. One station away from Ueno Park. Might consider going to Ueno Park for a jog smile.gif

Yes, get vacuum bags - it's so convenient! One of man's best invention when it comes to travelling haha.

You can consider running along the Imperial Palace's Garden - it's one of the most scenic route. One of my plan was to jog around the area but failed because everyone was too tired (me included) laugh.gif ...otherwise it's a good 5km loop where you can see Tokyo Tower as well. Here, more info: https://guidable.co/health/5-best-jogging-routes-in-tokyo/

Thanks for the jogging route suggestion. Will definitely consider smile.gif

Hey guys, will be my first time going to Japan! Landing in Tokyo next week. Please rate my itinerary  biggrin.gif

I am planning on spending 2 days in Tokyo and I want to explore and visit attractions these areas and do the following:

Day 1:
Ryogoku
- Edo-Tokyo Museum
- The Japanese Sword Museum
- Kyu-Yasuda Teien Garden

Akihabara
- @Home Cafe

Day 2:
Shinjuku
- Shinjuku Gyoen
- Omoide Yokocho

Shibuya
- Magnet by Shibuya 109

I have also been very fascinated about eating Japanese food, but have heard that a lot of the restaurants write their menus in Japanese.  cry.gif  I did some looking on Facebook and stumbled on this website called Doot. I have never been to Japan and can barely speak it but if I can get a local person to go with me, that would be great!

Have any of you tried using it?
*
I suggest u get some food and a picnic cloth before going to Shinjuku Gyoen. The locals enjoy their picnics and u can easily blend in and experience picnic there. Weather was super nice when I went there last week. Also, don't go too late. It gets dark around 4pm. Enjoy!
