The Exynos octacore is actually 2 quadcore processors : four high-performance ARM Cortex-A15 cores running at 1.60GHz, four low-power ARM Cortex-A7 cores with 1.20 GHz clock-speed as well as PowerVR SGX 544 graphics adapter. However, the Exynos 5410, though having eight cores but the phone will use only four at a time.
The technology used is called big.LITTLE and Samsung has taken a licence for it from ARM. In actual use, Galaxy S IV will use A7 cores while handling light work. For example, if you are making a call, the phone is likely to be powered by A7 cores. But if you are playing a demanding 3D game, it will switch off A7 cores and use A15 cores. At no point of time, the phone will use all eight cores simultaneously.
Samsung claims that this technology provides users best balance of performance as well as battery life. An important detail to note is that A15 cores are very powerful and even if only four of them are used in Exynos 5410, it is enough to make the device one of the most powerful smartphones in the market.
I am only looking forward to the Snapdragon model mainly due to LTE being enabled on it

Iphones seem to be more efficient processor wise when surfing. Thats why if iphone and like a flagship samsung device go head to head battery test both pure surfing, they actually last similarly. Because iphone dont eat that much juice while samsung eats a lot. But if a mix of uses then iphone would lose. Also I do get iphone heating up when I play extensive gaming. Surfing yea not so much. Its processor.

Battery Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) First of all, it should be noted that most myths about mobile phone battery care originated from the days where nickel-cadmium (NiCad) based batteries were common years ago but the overwhelming majority of smartphone batteries used nowadays are lithium ion based smart batteries which doesn’t require these treatments. I’ve seen these questions asked again and again multiple times over multiple threads and I’ve decided to compile some information all over the internet to answer these questions.
Q: I heard that you need to do an initial charge of 8 hours before first use of the battery, is this true? A: There is no need to charge a Lithium ion battery to 100% or charge for long hours (priming), this doesn't work for li-ion chemistry, before using your device. It will not affect battery life in anyway. In fact, you can start using most modern smartphone batteries immediately right out of the box and it won’t cause any problems to the long term life of your battery.
Q: I heard that it’s good for the battery if you often charge it to 100% and use it until it’s almost out of power before recharging again to combat battery memory effects. In other words, I heard it’s good to do full discharges of the battery before recharging. Is this true? A: Batteries have a finite limited number of charge cycles and similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last. If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life, other than to calibrate the fuel gauge on a smart battery once in a while between a few months. In other words, do not discharge lithium-ion too deeply. Instead, charge it frequently. Lithium-ion does not have memory problems like nickel-cadmium batteries. No deep discharges are needed for conditioning. Running a Lithium battery low all the time actually does harm it more than topping it off whenever possible. Q: Somebody told me to not leave the phone connected to a charger for a long time to avoid overcharging and damaging the battery. Would that be correct? A: In most cases of modern lithium ion batteries, this is not a problem as these smart batteries are designed to cut the current when they reach a certain charge level and will use a bit of their own power before they start charging again and since lithium ion batteries have no memory effects, this is not a problem. There is no danger of the battery being overcharged. People seem to misunderstand about this point because a lack of knowledge and also advices with other batteries for example with laptops where people are usually advised to take the lithium batteries out if it’s not going to be used for a long time. People don’t realise in that case that the risk is actually the heat coming from operation of the computer instead of overcharging.
Q: How should I store my battery if I’m not going to be using it for a while? eg. storing phone away or spare battery. A: The worst way to store a battery is to store it fully charged in places with high temperatures. Just rooted and installed clockworkmod recovery: whole process took less than a minute
Use Odin in PC to flash the root tar file. After reboot, boot back to recovery and select root phone. Restart - clockwork mod and supersu working fine. Tested and work fine with Titanium Backup. Now testing backup rom using recovery mode

So, as we had the Octa-Core (GT-I9500) variant of the Galaxy S4, we decided to do some benchmarks. We are just BLOWN away from the results we got. The Galaxy S4 crushed every other device, even the HTC One and the Sony XPERIA Z. We used Antutu and Quadrant as our benchmark tools. The device received a score of 27417 on Antutu and 12726 on Quadrant.

This rom taken down already many days. No idea when he will upload revised version Have only tested brood rom but fail to install. Developer did this rom without even testing it as he doesnt have the phone. Rom looks attractive as lots of bloatware taken off

hmm...seems reception is rather cool for sgs4. I recall the the frenzy surrounding sgs3 and to a lesser extent sgs2 where people where practically hunting down the sets.

How to undervolt the professor? Means the processor absorbs excess battery juice and the battery used up very fast? @.@

i learned something new , never heard UV can reduce heat (even in XDA). and heard many tried UC to reduce heat.

My S4 feels damn hot while playing with the phone. No web surfing. Just camera, chaton and insta. -___- My HTC One X rarely hv this issue. Hmm..

Root it and use app such as setcpu. There are several others app too. just google for undervolt n underclock app. You need to test as these apps need compatible kernel

That's right. How much you want to undervolt would vary upon different phones. There are some phone which can tolerate more undervolt than others – same thing as some cpu can overclock better than others.
In order to find an optimum value to undervolt, you will have to experiment by yourselves. Start with –25 and play around with the device to see if it's stable. If it is, you can attempt to undervolt further.

There should be 4 types of volume, Media, Ringtone, Notification, System. The one you normally mute is just the ringtones as such if u run apps/games there is still sound.
Update on S4 battery life. At 50% battery life left I have achieved 2 hours 51min screen on time. This I would say is good considering all my internet stufffs thro 3g n no wifi used. Getting 5 hours SOT should be no problem. Notice too the 5+ hours phone idle but with 3g still on battery left drop is insignificant

There are many reason on why the phone restarting. Simcard...sdcard...bad apps. You need to check and monitor all those one by one. Try unmount and take out you sdcard and use your phone for one or two days. See if the restarting happen again.

Try to check your settings. Make sure is on. My phone so far so good. Settings > my device > smart screen > smart stay
I noticed that on the top right corner of my screen, there is this one 'eye' feature that seems to be off. I am not sure what this is and if it is the reason d smart pause is not working. I checked my settings and the smart stay and smart pause are on. Really appreciate help on this esp to let me know what is this 'eye'. Thanks!

When it didnt detect my eye, it was because ambient light in the room too low for the phone to see me. Try again in a brighter area.

My experience using the HTC One it gets hotter faster than S4. Because of this the HTC1 battery life suffers. Example just on 3g browsing within 15 mins HTC1 will hit 38 degreeC while S4 most is 33 degree C. I never test on gaming. Overall HTC1 is generally "hotter" vs S4
My battery usage stats after nearly 24 hours Screen on time 5+hours . I rate this as good vs HTC1 (4+), Nexus 4 ( 3.5), Xperia Z (4.5). Definitely can never match Note2 ( 7-8 hours). All these numbers based on 3g no wifi being used. With wifi, SOT could gain another hour Notice when phone idle battery drop is minimal Overall happy with it

Until there is a solution to move games data to ext card you have to live with the miserable storage Or wait for 32gb S4 in another 3-4 months later Finally operating temperature is based on chip efficiency n not related to build materials. Build material affect heat transfer out to your palms only. Metal apparently allows better heat transfer out to minimize heat buildup internally but how efficient depends on the phone

KIV my plan to get S4 due to this matter.
Based on seller alieamin (SEP) they are forced to take in the S4 together with other lukewarm models as a package. This affect their profits. Phone margin is low while is ridiculously higher for accessories. For some buyer example me, I preorder n took delivery on day one got free flipcases n no compulsion to buy with accessories
We have a name for it. Its called bundling. The more popular the brand or the model, the more you are expected to bundle.
It happened with all the popular models (as it stand, mostly with one company), perhaps with the exception of iPhone (Which, due to demand, almost always doesn't lose their price). This has been going on for some time.
Sellers need to make margins so they stay in business. It you want to lay blame, ask the distributors.

There is a funny flipside to all of this though.
Some of the lukewarm models are lukewarm in a sense that you'd have problem selling it at places where people go to find the greatest gadjet. Example, no one will in their right mind travel from Tanjung Malim to buy Corby II at lowyat.
Some sellers however are lucky that they have branches or operate in areas where the so called lukewarm models are the best seller. So when they order, and are forced to take the lukewarm models, they will "acting one", ask discount etc etc.
After that, profit kaw kaw from those branches. I know I did.

If you go to Garage Sales section..there's a pinned thread for Samsung e-warranty registeration. Another way is PM our member FallenOut and ask for his help to register the phone warranty.
If I'm not mistaken..the initial opening for gallery takes abit of time because it's generating the thumbnails I think?

Smart Stay. Look for a volume widget to place in your homescreen for faster access.

The eye only comes on when the front cam wanna check. It will not be there all the time. Dunno about smart pause, but i guess it only works on stock video player.

Probably gonna do a proper screen-shot some other day of the usage and screen time.

when will 32gb be available? for early adopters this is not an option. the only real option is for samsung developer/designer to reduce the bloatware.
Precisely. Game are large due to the graphics. Here in the S4 it's probably large due to lack of code optimization. For all the features you get, the screens aren't anywhere near the graphic intensity of, say, NFS:MW. Most of it is likely code bloat.
It makes sense. Using s4 now and I really love the Samsung apps. Is their way to differentiate themselves. There are plenty of storage options, microsd, and Dropbox. If memory not enough, wait for 32gb models.

I read out of the 16gb memory, only approx 50% still available when u get the phone. Yes u can store files in SD card, but not apps. Android 4.0 already removed the function to move apps to SD card. That is like very limited storage space available especially for new apps that need to support the full Hd screen of s4...

It is not entirely for stability. It is about control of content, and to some extent, security.
In the case of that fruit company, it is entirely about control. They control, not you.

Itunes is your gatekeeper. Lose it and all is lost. With android you can drag and drop anywhere and even sync to the cloud if you want.
Real APK leecher can be used for downloading from the play store for later install.
waveweaver good point about ipon storage but could it be due to the training from fruitco that "you are satisfied with whatever we give you" and that itunes manages the rest for them? I hav heard of users complaining they can't store enough songs on their idevices.

Regarding pricing, I cannot say I agree with what were posted. Neither can I say I disagree. Reason is the price is very much dependent on supply and demand; and the introduction of new iteration(s), if any.
There cannot be any fixed duration or certain amount of depreciation. What were stated were just averages based on the trends so far. And I reiterate, it is not necessarily wrong but in all probabilities, not accurate.

Is it any one software solution to control all android app & data. Coz with itunes i just click(install) & unclick(keep in pc/mac) & using icloud to save data & app for backup incase want to reformat PC/Mac. All my PC/Mac at office & home already syc all same for my Iphone & Ipad.
I'm not technical person & just end user prefer one simple solution for more convenient. I try understand your solution but cannot manage sync it. Until now also not success try root download app auto to microsd. Hopefully will find the solution.

You gotta try your luck with the service center. I Don't think they have refurbished set yet so you can argue with them.
You gotta try your luck with the service center. I Don't think they have refurbished set yet so you can argue with them.

It is not a question of whether they have refurbished units. It is not their policy unlike Apple to replace 1 for 1. The reason I asked him to try is simply because he gotten his unit for just a few days. Otherwise, it would be futile to try.
Is it any one software solution to control all android app & data. Coz with itunes i just click(install) & unclick(keep in pc/mac) & using icloud to save data & app for backup incase want to reformat PC/Mac. All my PC/Mac at office & home already syc all same for my Iphone & Ipad.
I'm not technical person & just end user prefer one simple solution for more convenient. I try understand your solution but cannot manage sync it. Until now also not success try root download app auto to microsd. Hopefully will find the solution.

Ya, no choice. Luckily they fixed it up rather quick. I think the thing here is that you need to get any phone that is covered by the authorised dealer here. Only than can you get peace of mind should your set screw up on you.

My battery life with kinda light to medium usage of just media consumption (music and video) plus internet on LTE (facebook, web browsing etc.). I can see that it'll serve me well

Try remove that WhatsApp and see if your phone still have restarting problem.
You could be on the right track. But I am surprised that Whatsapp is not compatible as it should be, with Android, even with the bumped specs of the S4.
just want to share something..last night before sleep i downloading data for NFS most wanted while charging my s4..the i 'tertido'..about 4 hours later i terjaga i touch my phone and very2 hot..not just warm..very hot untill i cant hold it just for few second only..and its just freeze at nfs game..then i pull out battery and let its cold about half an hour..the issue is,how can its freeze and be very2 hot..i think mybe around 50-70 degree celcius..

just got s4 i9505 LTE and so far the lag is still there.. thought it only happens on i9500 due to bandwidth efficiency issue between the 2 processors..
the good news is, if it's not hardware issue, perhaps it can be fixed in future software update.
btw, here is score difference in synthetic benchmark (antutu) between i9500 and i9505 (right)
please bear in mind, the octa core is actually dual quad core processors. and while running this benchmark, the i9500 only runs on the faster exynos quad core cpu. not on both processors.. yet it's still faster than the s600 quad core, which is clocked at higher speed (1600mhz vs 1900mhz).
so other than the LTE capability, i dont see any advantage for i9505.

No, modern lithium ion batteries have no need for that and even if you do it, it will make no difference to the battery. In fact you can use it straight out of the box.

For LiIons, don't let it fall below 5%, best to start recharging at 15%

4 hours sure finished download and fully charge, impossible warm and hot @@

In most cases, you should avoid full discharge cycles. Unlike NiCad batteries, lithium-ion batteries do not have a charge memory.
They have a limited number of charge cycles and letting it drop to 1% and then fully recharging would shave off one full cycle so if you purposely do it often, in the long run it could shorten the life a bit instead of just recharging it whenever the battery just kinda gets low in power.

Possible, it is still lagging not smooth in animation part.
Heat wise, I don't think so, it is far cooler than xperia Z or that extreme heat phone - HTC One. I don't feel any heat issue during several units try out.

No problem with my S4 regarding temperature. It's cooler than my S3 that only reached 38ºC with 4hrs nonstop browsing

I test both model, Exynos at local and Snapdragon at Singapore, never feel any heat issue.
May i know how is the battery life for u guys? Seem like my this S4 battery is not as good as the Nexus 4 as reviewers stated. Even when my phone is not in use the battery is draining like hell. Is that CPU temp or battery temp? My battery temp never go pass 40 ºC even CPU reach 56 ºC. More info @ Samsung Galaxy S4 overheat issue
Hmm..most probably battery temp as I use Battery Solo Widget to measure it. And I've tested up to 58ºC for to 8 continuous hours via Stability Test app. The phone working perfectly well before...during..and after the test.

You get H+ when download/upload something. Otherwise is stay at H/3G icon depending on your telcos.

Demo always laggy one. Try ask the sales assistant to factory reset the phone if possible. Beside..i believe there's a new firmware updates that improve the phone stability/performance.

Unfortunately currently the implementation is not complete. The switching between A7 and A15 is done in a crude way. Its either all 4 running at A7 or all using A15. This technique similar to the little fifth core used in tegra 3. Although little.BIG actually can switch them independently depending on loads on each core. Imagine all 4 A15 running, power drain quickly. If you are heavy phone users, you may see the effect.
There are reasons why some XDA developers don't like tegra 3, and in this case the S4 implementation of little.BIG and Samsung lack of source code update, etc. Just don't dismiss it quickly without understanding it. Although I know lowyat forummer like to discuss casing and wallpaper more...

Firstly those quotes is only by one user and does not represent the majority Go and assess yourself - plenty of demo sets around I don't have such issues at all on my set
The s4 has a lot of stuff running in background also. Nfc. That eye scanning thingy. Smart stay. Whatever stuff. If u dun use I recommend switching off. Also as usual make sure u close unused apps properly. And off gps if not using too.
For underclocking and undervolting recommend setcpu. On playstore. However the ability to do noth would depend on whether u are rooted and whether your kernel supports it. If it does u will wanna tread carefully as it can cause your device to crash and the only way to fix would be a factory reset. Uncle benny can shed more light on how much u can reduce the voltage to a minimum of 800mv. I generally reduce all by 75mv for my note 2 to a minimum of 800mv (or if by default already lower I dont touch)
FYI, NFC dont consume much battery at all. If you dont use it, it will be on stand-by mode which means it consumes almost zero of your battery juice.

Some article I read conjectured that the kernel handles the core switching, it was yesterday. So we *could* end up having all cores firing but you may end up with 1h SOT
This is nothing new. Seasoned galaxy users would already know this trick to improve any lag if it bothers you The author over exaggerated it saying it improve lag 10 times
Does anyone here know why my S4 LTE AP from HK does not have the LTE/WCDMA/GSM option in the network setting? And I can't use 4G with it. However, when I first put in the sim card and boot up the device it detected 4G for a while and then gone. And I try to go to the setting and found that the LTE/WCDMA/GSM is not available. I am currently using Maxis Postpaid. Used it with Note II LTE has no problem accessing 4G and it has the option.

Did you use a "cut" SIM instead of a replacement micro-SIM from Maxis? That's usually the case.

Duhh..you bought the phone from HK or you bought it here with HK firmware..? If you bought from HK then the nearest service centre that might accept AP set is Samsung S'pore. If you bought the phone here then just bring it back to the shop.

You just answered us. It is therefore not so responsive. Needed to know cause I am contemplating seriously on getting this S4.
So many option that can be set for camera; is it Ok just to stick with the auto option
Yeah..it have gazillions features. .lolz Of coz its okay for auto option. Same with me..I just leave it at auto. I'm not an avid photographer and I just point and shoot But you'll get a much better pictures if you know how to play with those options/features.

Me. I used s4 lte with nano sim maxis (hv to use nano to micro sim adapter).
No problem with 4G connectivity as long as I am in that area..
May I ask, do you have the LTE/WCDMA/GSM option in the network setting or it is just WCDMA/GSM option? Cuz mine only have WCDMA/GSM. You bought your s4 from Singapore?

Sensors not being responsive could also be a software problem which can be fixed with updated rather than a batch of hardware with problem.

If u are making lots of call...u should retain it; but other than that..u should choose the plan..
AndreiLux tells us installing a custom kernel will still allow us to have root access on our Galaxy S4. So what does this new feature really do? It tries to prevent malware from abusing exploits like Exynos-abuse to gain root, and a consequence of that is disrupting how Superuser works on our phones. Solution? Install a kernel with the feature disabled and give up some security for more freedom.
a bit annoyed that some resellers are taking advantage and bundling with stupid 'compulsory' items including hotel packages.

You can try at Samsung shop Lowyat Grd Floor. They're selling at RRP2199 outright without bundle. But here the catch... 1) they don't take pre-order 2) first come first serve basis. 3) stock limited 4) new stock coming almost daily but no fixed time. It can be in the morning or evening or even night. So you need patience and a bit lucky when picking up your time heading there.
Me. I used s4 lte with nano sim maxis (hv to use nano to micro sim adapter).
No problem with 4G connectivity as long as I am in that area..
I tried flashing official firmware from Sammobile using the Spain Firmware and after success flashing using Odin it has the LTE/WCDMA/GSM option already and has no problem detecting and using the Maxis 4G signal. So, I guess it is the original HK firmware problem and don't know why it originally detected 4G during first boot then gone and without having the LTE/WCDMA/GSM option. Wierd.

i just got my s4 last night hahahahaha !!! the question is do i have to root it to make it run smoothly ? its already very smooth now ... i know u need to root in order to flash other roms ... any good roms to recommend ? ?

Why did you pay for such a hefty sum? Should've checked the RRP before buying bro, always do some research before buying anything.
What are you trying to flash on Odin? CWM or TWRP recovery?
You need to go and have a look yourself. Sometimes ppl say Maxis A have stock but when you reach there..stock finished already. Sometimes ppl say Maxis B have no stock but when you reach there and luckily the stock just arrive.

I got to test one today I gotta say the S4 looks much nicer compared to the SIII.
The aluminium lining of the S4 gives a much more premium feel, reminiscent to that of the old SII. The weight and feel of the phone is tremendously better, due to the less curvy design and more even weight distribution across the entire surface area.
The back cover of the black S4 version is kinda weird though, chequered kind of pattern which kinda reminds me of the Galaxy Nexus back cover.
The FULL HD screen surprised me a little bit as I didn't really expect that much of a difference compared to SIII's 306PPI but boy was I wrong. Everything looks so sharp and detailed, and now when I look back at my SIII, it doesn't seem that great anymore
I couldn't get the smart features such as Air Gestures and Smart scroll to work, not sure if it's due to my handling or what. I tried moving my eyes to the bottom and top of the page but it wouldn't activate the scrolling. Only when I tilt the phone a bit then only it works...
Overall, phone seemed pretty damn smooth during my short testing there. Surprisingly, transition animation is also pretty fluid without any hint of lag. Maybe I got to test a "good" unit

Hi guys I am using Hotlink Youth Club now, I plan to get a Galaxy S4 with U58 but I don't want to change number nor terminate plan.
Can i buy the U58 package, and then switch the numbers after that? Means porting the numbers both ways.
Hi, u can't. If u want to retain the number, u need to go to umobile and change to umobile prepaid first. Then after few days when the system already updated record that u r under umbile, u can go to umobile again to sign up U58 plan. That was wat explained to me by the umobile ppl.
To change the icons, I use Go Launcher Ex. For the icons, I use DCikonZ (icon pack). You can download at Play Store...its free. For the 'S IV' icon, I custom make using Photoshop. To change the icon (using Go Launcher Ex), follow these steps :-
Step 1 : Click and hold (only effect on the home sceen) until you see Replace, Rename, Delete & Uninstall, then click Replace to replace the icon.
Step 2 : On the top left on the screen, you will see your current theme for your default icon (either it shows Default Theme, or UI3.0 Theme). Click that and choose DCikonZ. From here you will see the list of DCikonZ icons. And finally choose your desire icon.

If you port your number, your current plan won't be numberless, it'll be terminated.
