Hello hello. I'm planning to upgrade into a Dslr and have currently a used d80 + 50 1.8 or new d3100 in mind as my budget is around 1.6k.

So wanna have an advice here from all sifu that is the larger pentaprism virwfinder, autofocus motor, dual dial of d80 worth it over the lack of live view and cmos sensor of the d3100?

I'm planning to venture more into high magnification macro photography. Thanks all!

Canon 600D and D5100 is much recommended compared to d90. I used d90 once... the video is capped at 720p and it heats up easily after 6-9minutes....
However this is not much concern as you are in HDR, landscape, wedding. D90 IQ is good but D5100 is better. But d90 have much buttons for settings and 2 dial for better control. Try both before choosing.

Yes, D3100 lacks of a autofocus motor but if you can always get G lenses to pair with it in the future. Besides it has a much(?) better ISO performance, bigger MP count, FULL HD video recording,etc

If I were you I'd go with the latest tech, save up a bit and get a 50 f/1.8G or 35f/1.8G lens

You could also ask Nikonians in the dedicated thread for better answers though

Just bear in mind that D5100 lacks a AF motor meaning you can only get Auto Focus by pairing it with only G lenses...

D5100 has newer tech compared to D90 which are better sensor, better metering(?), better ISO performance, flippy screen and perhaps a higher reso screen(?)

600D should perform similarly as the 2 Nikon models above...

Anyway, for weddings, you might want to allocate some funds for a flashgun which is crucial for indoor shots. Fast lenses are also recommended to get a quick AF lock..

Coming from the world of Canon, I can tell you that the menu system in Canon's DSLRs are very easy to learn/access and reach.

I've tried operating some Nikon DSLRs before and I can tell you that it's really not as user friendly as Canon's though there seem to be many and specific options for each functions, perhaps more than Canon's.

Your budget is probably ain't enough for Compact Interchangeable Lens cameras as you might need multiple lenses for each photography genre...

If you're not that serious into photography, I'd suggest a good compact like a Canon S100, Oly XZ-1 or the Lumix LX5. Do look up to some of the recommendations I made in the second post I made in this thread

I'd recommend the Lumix LX5, Oly XZ-1 and Canon S100. These 3 are the popular ones and should perform similarly

lol just checked those out but then again, imma girl and i kaki camwhore with my friends sooo those camera's dont really spark my interest ahhahaha

among the 2 samsung ones. I prefer the ex1 as it has a hot shoe . External flash will be useful if you are really into camwhore

You might want to check out the Canon G12 as it has a flippy screen. Good for camwhoring

I'd recommend the Olympus XZ-1 since it has a good max f/1.8 aperture to f/2.5 at tele end and a good zoom range extending from 28mm to 112mm without losing much light

Or you could check out Canon's S100 or Panasonic Lumix LX5 as well

For Nikon, I'd recommend the D7000, 18-105 kit lens and a 50 f/1.8D prime lens. Might be slightly over budget.

For Canon, I'd suggest a 60D, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC and a 50 f/1.8 II

Can't say about the others but I just gotten myself a HX9V which is quite similar to the HX7V. Image quality should be the same.
As a general purpose camera.. I suppose its ok if you're not that picky. It's decent for facebook and web use up to 1024pixel resolution. At bigger resolutions .. then not so nice liao compared to enthuasiast compacts like the XZ-1 and the S90.

Just took these today while play play with the camera... click on the spoiler. See if it's acceptable to you or not... they're non-edited ... just resized.

One thing though, the steadyshot on active mode is really powerful. Video is awesome on this little camera.

Added on February 10, 2012, 1:21 amSounds good.. though the 17-50mm Tamron autofocus speed will perform below par if the outer focus points on the 60D is used. It's a known issue.

Most every-thing proof camera's aren't THAT good lo.. so I suggest a second hand Sony TX5 (click on the spoiler) or a Kodak ZX5 which kinda a fun cheap camera. Don't expect miracles though in terms of image quality.

i was really impressed with the night shots. first tested on my friends nex3. Handheld twillight is just great for night shots.
the zoom is a plus and 3d is just a gimmick.

All of the models you mentioned are capable of shooting very good pictures.

Keep in mind though that GF2 with the kit zoom lens may not offer any advantage over something like the LX5 even though the former's got a bigger sensor.

Interchangeable lens cameras are all about the lens.. they need specific lens for specific functions to show their best.

If just specs... then go to http://snapsort.com/compare/Sony-TX10-vs-nikon-s9100 and check it out yourself.

Though specs may not say everything.

Ok here's my case. I planning to buy new camera. My dilemma is, my friend want to sell his Nikon D90 camera to me for RM2.5k (maybe i can push the price until RM2.3k). He bought that camera on Jan 2011 so no more warranty. The question is should i buy that camera or just go to new Nikon D5100 & Canon 600D option? i would recommend nex5n instead of nex3 since u highlighted .although its a little off ur budget,u shud each model u listed out above.
instead of 550d , i recommend 600D. its rm2500+/- .I used my friend 600D b4, its kinda fun and simple. As for a35,it has much more customize-able effect . evf is , u can see ur setting on ur view finder .
Canon 600D is nice if u have small hand. but if you have a large hand ,you will feel that its kinda uncomfortable to hold it . Personally ,i recommend a65 since u prefer nikon and sony.

video -600D is good in af /mf.
-A65 is good ,but it comes with continous af

both have better video compared to d90. It easily heat up the camera .

D90 for rm2500 is not much recommend as warranty is not available.


since your budget is rm3000 below and you mentioned ^. i recommend you have a try on a65. it is much advanced compared to a35/a55. D3100 is not comparable here .

but preferably canon s95/s100 or olympus xz1 as you r new in photography.

My only comment is whether u prefer electronic viewfinder (EVF) or an optical one (OVF)

EVF has a lot of benefits like live histogram and immediately you can see your exposure... and cameras with EVF also generally means have better implementation of liveview.

OVF on the other hand is just mirrors reflection the image in light form through the len. It's like a window through the lens. You see what the lens see.

So just whether you prefer to look through a window to the world or viewing via a LCD screen.

Does she need interchangeable lens? Is she taking photography as a hobby or its just for snapshots? Is she going to buy more lens? How much does she weight convenience (point and shoota-bility) over image quality.
Cos cameras are all about compromises

XZ-1 sucks for "HD recording".
IMHO, for someone "new to photography".. a dslr is a better tool for learning.
If they just want a camera to snap shooting that trip etc.. then maybe a travel zoom is a better choice.

didnt know it sucks for hd recording.
I recommend compact as i see lots of newcomer tend to shoot fully auto with dslr. Auto mode in compact are much better ,in my opinion.
Then they complain "y dslr so heavy" ...

she's taking picture as a hobby and maybe in the future she will look for another lens.from what i see, she doesn't want compact camera as she already got old 5MP Pentax camera.

If just with the standard zoom lens... NEX-5N better but micro four third has much better selection of autofocus lens.

GX1 is also more responsive in terms of controls and autofocus.

With primes like 14mm f2.5 + 20mm f1.7/25mm f1.4 + 45mm f1.8... then micro four third is much better imho as a shooter system.

I said system because I think that while the camera itself is important but these are interchangeable lens cameras....the camera bodies have very short lifecycle.. they get replaced every year with better models but the lens stays the same.

Also for cool-ness factor... silver Olympus E-P3 with 12mm or 45mm. Looks awesome for ladies.

It's based on the XZ-1 which share the same sensor as the LX-5.. there's some differences in the lens spec but generally, the concept applies.

If answer to the above questions is NO ... then 2 options:

Option 1: Do nothing cos its just Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) ... also known as gear lust or gatal in Malay.

Option 2: Save up and buy D4... cos anything lesser than that still will get GAS.

currently using D70s, but think i'm not really utilising it to the fullest. (also, it's heavy and big) want to downgrade to a newer model of entry level dslr.

am using 17-50 & 50mm for now, but think want to sell 50mm and buy 35mm instead because of the wider crop. should i? or should i sell 17-50 and buy 35mm? LOL

By the way, IT fair next weekend, possible better price or should go lowyat instead

Evf means you can see the setting that you change on the spot in your viewfinder. like when u increase ur iso, u can see ur img in viewfinder brighten.

continuous Af means you can have diff type of videography with your dslr.

A65 is about rm 2600+/- for body only if not mistaken. For kit lens its about 2700-2800.

as for recommendation of where to buy, wheres your location as in kl?

cheaper is ofcoz better (for company use) but also dun mind stretching a bit for something better as the output will be used on print. The important thing is value for money.

Actually I more or less like the D7000, but the A77 looks interesting too and is versatile for video too for the company. However, once I reach the A77 budget it seems like there are some others to choose from so some suggestions would be good.

I'm very noob in photography and sorts, but I would like to buy a camera for my friend who is good at photography
I'm looking at a Nikon D90 and I was wondering whether you guys could tell me whether there are any other competitors within the same price range (I think its around RM3.5k?)

Also, would you kindly tell me where to buy these kind of cameras? I'm quite afraid of being conned, is LYP a good place? And are there "fake" units?

You can get a D7000 around RM3.7k which offers way more features and better Image Quality

No such thing as fake cameras lolz, just like laptops. I'd recommend DY DIVINE in Digital Mall. Bought from them some stuff before, good people. Look out for the salesman called James

Btw, you could also try one shop in BB plaza...from the entrance, walk straight up a bit and the shop is on your left.

Last but not least, do survey around the price before purchase. Do check out the Nikon camera thread first page
