Hello hello. I'm planning to upgrade into a Dslr and have currently a used d80 + 50 1.8 or new d3100 in mind as my budget is around 1.6k.

So wanna have an advice here from all sifu that is the larger pentaprism virwfinder, autofocus motor, dual dial of d80 worth it over the lack of live view and cmos sensor of the d3100?

I'm planning to venture more into high magnification macro photography. Thanks all!
*
Yes, D3100 lacks of a autofocus motor but if you can always get G lenses to pair with it in the future. Besides it has a much(?) better ISO performance, bigger MP count, FULL HD video recording, etc

If I were you I'd go with the latest tech, save up a bit and get a 50 f/1.8G or 35f/1.8G lens smile.gif

You could also ask Nikonians in the dedicated thread for better answers though biggrin.gif

Budget: RM2600 (with kitlens)
Your Location:   Terengganu
Preferable brand :  Canon or Nikon
Type of photography u want to do :  HDR, landscape, wedding
Any specific models in mind? :  Canon 600D or D90 or D5100
Any specific features u want? :  user-friendly

having used 1000D before..easy to use..i like canon but i love nikon.. smile.gif
*
Just bear in mind that D5100 lacks a AF motor meaning you can only get Auto Focus by pairing it with only G lenses...

D5100 has newer tech compared to D90 which are better sensor, better metering(?), better ISO performance, flippy screen and perhaps a higher reso screen(?)

600D should perform similarly as the 2 Nikon models above...

Anyway, for weddings, you might want to allocate some funds for a flashgun which is crucial for indoor shots. Fast lenses are also recommended to get a quick AF lock..

p/s: D90 with kit lens for RM2.6k? hmm.gif

Coming from the world of Canon, I can tell you that the menu system in Canon's DSLRs are very easy to learn/access and reach.

I've tried operating some Nikon DSLRs before and I can tell you that it's really not as user friendly as Canon's though there seem to be many and specific options for each functions, perhaps more than Canon's.

Your budget is probably ain't enough for Compact Interchangeable Lens cameras as you might need multiple lenses for each photography genre...

If you're not that serious into photography, I'd suggest a good compact like a Canon S100, Oly XZ-1 or the Lumix LX5. Do look up to some of the recommendations I made in the second post I made in this thread smile.gif

I'd recommend the Olympus XZ-1 since it has a good max f/1.8 aperture to f/2.5 at tele end and a good zoom range extending from 28mm to 112mm without losing much light thumbup.gif

Or you could check out Canon's S100 or Panasonic Lumix LX5 as well smile.gif

For Nikon, I'd recommend the D7000, 18-105 kit lens and a 50 f/1.8D prime lens. Might be slightly over budget.

For Canon, I'd suggest a 60D, Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 non VC and a 50 f/1.8 II

Dear camera sifu-sifu  notworthy.gif  notworthy.gif

I'm very noob in photography and sorts, but I would like to buy a camera for my friend who is good at photography laugh.gif
I'm looking at a Nikon D90 and I was wondering whether you guys could tell me whether there are any other competitors within the same price range (I think its around RM3.5k?)

Also, would you kindly tell me where to buy these kind of cameras? I'm quite afraid of being conned, is LYP a good place? And are there "fake" units? laugh.gif

I apologize if my questions sounds silly laugh.gif

Thanks in advance for the replies sifus! Appreciate it!  notworthy.gif

Hi laptop sifu icon_rolleyes.gif

You can get a D7000 around RM3.7k which offers way more features and better Image Quality

No such thing as fake cameras lolz, just like laptops. I'd recommend DY DIVINE in Digital Mall. Bought from them some stuff before, good people. Look out for the salesman called James

Btw, you could also try one shop in BB plaza...from the entrance, walk straight up a bit and the shop is on your left.

Last but not least, do survey around the price before purchase. Do check out the Nikon camera thread first page smile.gif

Type of camera/lens/accesories : ILC or compact
Budget: Below 3k
Your Location: Klang
Preferable brand : None
Type of photography u want to do : Portrait, landscape, travel
Any specific models in mind? : Nex 5n, lumix G3, canon G1 x
Any specific features u want? : Flip out screen, great lowlight, awesome IQ

If nex5n have flip out screen I would have bought it but I really need flip out screen for travel photo purposes. Any other great cameras other than mentioned above have flip out screen?
Right now still contemplating because Nex5n IQ simply blew away the G3 and G1x.
*
NEX-5N might have better IQ and better low light capabilities than the G1X due to the bigger sensor, but you still would have to buy additional lenses to cover certain range. G1-X has a fixed lens, so there's no hassle of finding lenses since it's a all in one system smile.gif

Not too sure how much the NEX-5N costs, but you may want to look at a 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens and the kit lens that comes with it.

Type of camera/lens/accesories : Any
Budget: Below Rm1.5k
Preferable brand : Any
Type of photography u want to do : Travel/casual
Any specific models in mind? : Panasonic Lumix LX5
Any specific features u want? : Of course a point and shoot camera with the biggest sensor i can possibly get. shoots well at night

Currently have only the LX 5 in mind as i experimented with my friends camera and it does wonders to me. Jz wondering if there are any alternatives and if i can gt it anywhere cheap. last time i checked was 1.4k+..

Thanks in advance! smile.gif
*
There's also the Olympus XZ-1 or the Canon S100 biggrin.gif

XZ-1 seems nice and has a very good max aperture at it's longest zoom compared to both the LX5 and S100. But loses out on the wideness of the LX5 which is only 28mm compared to 24mm on the LX5.

The new Canon G1X seems pretty good because it has a much larger sensor than any of the compacts, bigger than a micro 4/3 sensor. But comes with a hefty price tag of around RM2k. If you can increase your budget, do check this out smile.gif

Those are not DSLRs. They're EVIL cameras.. aka Electronic Viewfinder Interchangeable Lens camearas

Sensor wise, not as big as DSLRs and thus, won't have an image quality as good as a DSLR like the Nikon D7000 or Canon 7D for example, and ISO performance(aka low light) would not be as good as a dedicated DSLR smile.gif

But EVIL cameras are smaller lah, more compact. Variety of lenses are a lot less but you can get those adapters to mount Canon/Nikon/Sony lenses but you lose Auto Focus as a result

Hi guys! Please give me some suggestions on where to buy as well. Where can I get better deals? Penang or Lowyat? I heard that Lowyat has plenty of scammers, is it true? And for the lack of built-in motor for Nikon, is it going to be very inconvenient? As I'm planning to get the 50mm f/1.8 as well. This is my first DSLR.

Thanks!
*
Lack of built in Motor for Nikon bodies means you cannot get Auto Focus with the 50 f/1.8. Bodies such as D3100 or D5100. D90 or D7000 which has built in motor are way off your current budget.

I'd suggest a 550D kit lens set. Full Auto focus with any current Canon lens. You can grab a 50 f/1.8 for around RM250 or so.

If you plan on shopping in Lowyat or BB area, look out for Foto Shangrila in LYP, Boeing in Sg Wang, Bintang Electronics in BB Plaza and one more shop (I like) near the entrance of BB plaza. Hope this helps.

Try to top up to around RM800 to get the 35 f/1.8G which has a built in motor smile.gif

Or you could go with a 550D kit lens set at @RM2.2k and grab a 50 f/1.8 @RM250. Canon bodies have built in motor so no worries here.

Difference between 550D and 600D is minimal. Only main difference is the swivel screen and the electronic wireless flash transmitter (for strobing)

QUOTE(cliffang83 @ Apr 26 2012, 09:58 AM)
Hi guys, I'm going to get a new camera soon but kind of don't know which type to decide.

I used to have a SLR about 15 years ago (was into photography but then later give up due to lack of time, and if pass to random ppl who don't know how to take photo, it'll be a mess).
Then later I get myself a Lumix FZ10 super zoom, which I am very happy about it as come compare to the SLR I used to have.

Now, with the budget of RM2k, should I stick to the super zoom or DSLR?

Obviously, Super zoom is like a compact camera with so many fancy standard functions yet we don't use it all the time in photography, GOOD side, "Now everyone know how to take photo."

Having a DSLR gives me a chance to take good photos and flexibility of customizing the camera for specific functions. Bad side, "Not everyone know how to take good photo with it."

End of my doubts, which decision would be worth the money for me to put in.
Super Zoom (less than 2k) or DSLR (Slightly over 2K)?

Thinking between Sony Alpha NEX-5N vs Panasonic Lumix FZ150.
*
If you're comfortable and satisfied with a super zoom, why would you want to get back to the DSLR system?

As you already know and experienced, a DSLR system is not cheap. All you're getting with roughly 2.5k to 3k budget is a very very basic set and kit lens. Anything with a longer zoom, you have to come out with $$$. Accessories are also expensive. But the quality you get would be a lot better than what a superzoom can do

Just to note that, either side is pretty good. More expensive lenses produce better output and both brands have excellent lenses. Won't go wrong with either one.

Maybe you can wait for D3200 or Canon 650D. These 2 are going to be released soon in to the market. Definitely well worth the wait

Nikon D7000 is a good camera. Has pretty much all the functions you might need. Good AF system, good low light performance and reasonably decent fps for fast action burst shots.

Pair it up with a decent lens and you're good to go

How about a Olympus XZ-1 at around RM1.1k? Though out of your budget, but the increment of quality you get from it is way much better than the price you're paying for.

Usually the under RM1k cameras have pretty little RnD going on, thus, very little features to make them "good".

Type of photography u want to do : Mostly for holidays
Any specific models in mind? : Sony nex 7
Any specific features u want: Fast AF speed / great in low light

Previously was using lx3 for few years then realized the af speed is really slow especially when more and more newer/faster cameras are coming out. So far I've seen Nex7 af speed and am very impressed but with the hefty price tag 5k, I would like to know if there's other cheaper option. thanks in advance.

NEX F3? I think this is Sony's latest NEX camera.

Not sure. I'd say the XZ-1 is probably the best compact camera (single lens) for that price point IMHO

Keen to get 600D but without the kit lens

Which lens should I go for to substitute the kit lens, in terms of the overall performance for a long term use

I am using just for normal photo-taking eg landscape/ portraits

Thanks
*
You can try the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 VC. Pretty sharp lens and has bigger aperture than a kit lens, thus you can use faster Shutter Speed in low light or use lower ISO. In short, better low light performance smile.gif

Or if you have a bigger budget, can go for Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM around RM3.1k

RM1.1k boleh tak? One of the best compact cameras below RM2k, Olympus XZ-1 thumbup.gif

Else, maybe you can get a LX3 (if there's still stock) or search around for LX5/S100. Not too informed about their prices/availability anymore sad.gif

Type of camera/lens/accesories: DSLR
Budget: around RM 6K
Your Location: Kuala Lumpur, Selangor
Preferable brand : Nikon
Type of photography u want to do : Occasional Travel Photo of landscape and portrait (not important) Priority is on still shot of products (Macro and normal shot)
Any specific models in mind? : D3100, D3200, D7000, D400 (or similar range)
Any specific features u want? : Concern about picture quality above all else. Good low lighting condition where I would shoot at night. Will buy studio light for it and already have light tent.

Hi i'm in a dilemma now. I'm looking for a dslr as stated above but really wanted to know if it is worth to buy D300 replacement model, D400/500/600 whichever they are coming out with or if it even exist. But  I'm in a hurry to get a dslr before august and the D300 replacement won't come out that soon.

If I choose D300 replacement, I would have to take a D3100 or D3200 for temporary use and resale them when they come out. The question is between this two model, which will have higher resale price.

Or should I just jump straight to a D7000 and use it for a long term.

Thanks in advance.

If you can wait, the Nikon D600 might just become reality. It's a cheap Full Frame camera. Estimated around RM4k price range drool.gif

iirc 60D+18-55 is around RM3.2k and D7000+18-105 is around RM3.7k

QUOTE(Akuma no Hana @ Jun 23 2012, 02:08 PM)
I really do doubt that the D600 would be that cheap. Sadly I would like to use it as soon as possible. Anyway, based on your experience, when a new model such as D600 come out which will give the best resale value? D3100,D3200 or D7000?
*
Definitely gonna be cheaper than the D700. D700 also I'm not sure whether they're still selling it or phasing it out already.

Resale value? I don't think you should be thinking about that first. Cameras get refreshed every 1-2 years depending on the model. Lower end models like the D3000/5000 series gets refreshed almost every year so value would drop when a new model is out. Higher end cameras like the D700 gets refreshed like every 3 years or so...

Ohhhh I think I get you. You're thinking of getting a cheap camera to play first, and when the D600 comes out, you'll get it? biggrin.gif

If liddat, how about a D7000? It's pretty decent, with kit lens it's around RM3.7k iirc.

Afaik you cannot use DX lenses on FX format cameras. About the adapter I'm not sure but most likely you'll lose auto focus capability.

Btw, the rumoured D600 has no motor. Meaning you have to pair lenses that have motor in it like the Nikon G lenses for eg: 35f/1.8G to be able to use AF
