hi all
i am planning for a vacation this coming christmas
i am thinking of which action cam to get to record all the moment
any suggestion? budget below rm1000

I have a GX1 which is rarely used because I could not afford a prime lens back then and the kit lens is near to useless as I often shoot portrait, macro, and low light. My smartphone is able to satisfy my casual photography and i found no use of my GX1 for years


recently met some people around me who are into photography and I am motivated to start all over again, this time with more budget

After some research, I am having 3 options

1) buy a prime lens for my GX1, which would allow me to explore the type of photography that I long to do previously.. cheapest and easiest option. But, that sensor is noisy for low light by current standard and lousy jpg output even for casual. not sure a fast prime could salvage that
2) sell my GX1 and get a 1" PnS, something like RX100V, G7x II, LX100, LX10 etc. For this option, damage would be around 2.5 - 3k.. might forgo better low light IQ due to smaller sensor but I need not worry about lens in future and i get newer bell whistles which might make the experience more enjoyable
3) sell my GX1 and go to A6000. Then add something like SEL50F18 or SEL35F18. This is the most expensive option. But I would anticipate much better IQ up down left right front back. oh ya, the wifi feature comes handy

if you wan small light easy to carry, m43 cams are more suitable for that role. whether to save the money for lens (GM5), or a better sensor and feature (GX85) is up to you. But i would say GM1 plus some 20mm 17mm pancake prime is a good combo for what you wanna do.

sony's cam body might looks slim but that is just an illusion. Due to larger sensor, most of its lens are bulky and you cannot beat physics. but the dynamic range and low light output of the sensor is hard to ignore

sony, at least up till a7iii, the menu is a mess.. a7c user here. some more no touch function implemented. i think they have improved on their a7siii and later models, but not a7iii

For APSC, I would go Fuji. In your case xs10. Fuji offering for APSC is more sincere while
Sony seems like they neglect their apsc format or use it as a feeder system for their full frame. their current APSc, A6xxx line up, even the newer zv10 all using very old and outdated slow readout sensor. Rolling shutter is very bad if you plan to explore videography in future or you prefer to use electronic shutter like me. Their ibis... forget about it. Fuji ibis isnt the best but compare to Sony, I think they are better.

I haven't seen xs10 in person or handle it, but I read a lot people said the grip is good, you need to test it out yourself as we all have different hands. Again, Sony camera is not known for ergonomic

I always think it as garbage in garbage out concept. Feed the sensor with image from bad glass and that is what it recorded, and that is the max quality output you are going to get

For me, new cam vs old cam biggest diff for photography is mostly the autofocus department, image quality such as DR, high iso noise does not improve much, might even decrease a little in some case at extreme as the newer sensor is optimize for other attributes like readout,AF speed than absolute image quality improvement (eg, xt2 vs xt3 at high iso). When you know the engineering team has to make compromise like this, you know that the current sensor tech is already mature and improvement for each generation is marginal. You wouldn't miss out too much from an old body

you need the setup suggested previously to start to see thr difference between a phone and camera. If you go by a kit lens, you will regret that you bought a 3k new camera as you find no diff or even latest higher end phone night mode took much better pic at low light
2 of my friends who bought a camera thinking that could up their insta game, 1 regretted and falls back to phone. Another one almost gave up until he invested in 1 fast prime lens
