how do you encourage someone to start weightlifting? lately my mother is pretty worried over my younger bro who spends all his time in front of the pc. hes on semester break and has loads of time in his hands.. want to encourage the fella to have a healthier lifestyle and since he doesnt really play sports i suppose weightlifting is the easiest thing for him to learn and continue doing when he goes back to school in a months time.

thing is, he doesnt seem interested, not even when he has a bench and a couple of db's in the house (where he spends ALL of his time). I have taught him the basic moves, bookmarked my fave sites to get articles and advise and still no luck..
*
It's depend on one's character. I'm the only son in my family, only have an elder sister. My mum and dad play only badminton and bowling. In my social circle, none is BB/weightlifting; I played basketball and football since small. Started in this when I want to buy a dumbbell to be stronger. Then came over sites and eventually came across and found that BB/Strength training is a big field involving lots on diet/nutrition, of course sciences in working out. And damn I start to love it, seeing myself getting smaller (lose fat) and of course getting better look (that's when my teachers and friends start to praise me in school).LOLx.

Then some of my friends started doing the same, for the abs, for the V-taper, to be like movie star, to be stronger etc.

I got this exact experience, when I try to force my buddy (who was at 120kg) to start changing his life. He was there training with me,whenever I trained. But if our schedule crash, I trained on my own, he doesn't even move at all. Then later, he started to say that "I do taekwondo/swimming/badminton every week.I actually muscular but just covered with fat.". Then I choose to give up on him.

Until one day, he came to me and ask "I feel that I need to work on my chest. Otherwise, when I'm slim down, I lose the muscles, you know, those on arms and chest." I responded saying "You have big chests and arms now, but they mostly fats. But still you need to cut down while building some muscles,by lifting and play with irons." Still, he say "yeah, right." And after months, he is still having the same exact lifestyle, no changes.

What I want to say is, it's up to someone to find what he likes and why he likes that. You can tie your brother and made him do whatever you do, but as if he doesn't enjoy, he wouldn't bother to do it HIMSELF. Until he really like it and want to do it.

What you can do, is sincerely tell him why you want him to do that. For look, for health or for everything, made him feel that.

My mum wasn't like me doing these things due to the perception (Hulk is bad), but now she is very encouraging. Thanks to celebrities who started taking off clothes promoting beauty of muscles.

LOLx.

yeah, i more or less just advised him that his current lifestyle is not healthy and its really up to him to have the determination to change. tried forcing him by working out with him too but hes just not into it i guess.

i think i made an impression when i asked him to move a flowerpot that needs to be moved and he couldnt budge it, waited until he gave up and moved it myself tongue.gif . lets see how it goes...

Thanks dude.  As I suspected, maybe I'm not training hard enough.  I'm trying to cut down my rest time in between sets and getting more serious on my cardio.  Problem is it's damn tough keeping the energy up.  No really aiming for ripped out abs but at least that turtle shell.  Right now just the lower belly fat is damn hard to get rid of.

Not sure how your routine goes. But I either always superset through different exercises and only rest 45 ~ 75 sec between sets (if I do one body part for tat day) or superset through different exercises for different parts with no rest (rest time for tat part is used to workout another part). Then end up everything with a 15~ 20 mins cardio. My energy is not a problem, but concentration is, especially when the mood is not right. Everyone would have problem with lower belly. But anatomically, consistently working on lower part of body helps that part. Still trying though.

Good idea, but don't hurt his self-esteem. LOLx.

Remembered when I worked as part time catering waiter, worked just like hard labour, have to carry "tong gas". One of the girls try to carry it, and my friend (a guy) was try to help and so he ask me to carry it together with him.End up, I just lift it up and carry on my shoulder. The girl asked "Is it that light?" I ter-said "yeah." And my friend was somehow embarassed and showing me mad.gif whole day long. LOLx.

I'm mostly using diet to bring out the lower abs. With single digit bf %, it'll pop. Hopefully.

Mikey,

I had the same problem with my brother. But it really is up to them to make that decision and motivate themselves, otherwise they'll slack right off first opportunity they get and go back to squatting....in front of the PC all day.

yeah, i should really bring him to gym one weekend too. when you see that many equipment and weights dedicated just for weightlifting i kinda thinks its a physiological boost too.

Introduce him to the guys at the gym.
Being one of the brotherhood is a stronger pull than the equipment IMHO. Have them throw in encouragement for him to come too, you know that feeling where you hate letting people down and you gotta go? brows.gif

Seriously bad day for me. One of those days where everything seems to go wrong and the things you're trying to avoid hits you in the face.

Blur enough to cut my knuckles, don't know how so was bleeding through the sets a bit.

On the deadlift at 275, which is relatively heavy for me, started well enough. A couple of sets of 225, then up to 275.
First pull to get that deadweight moving upwards, felt that dreaded small pop/snap in the middle of my lower back.

"Oh f***"

Lowered the bar immediately. Thankfully it wasn't a sharp pain indicating a slipped disc, suspect more of a muscle issue. But it was seriously sore throughout, took some focus to finish the rest of the workout. At times could barely pick up the DBs off the floor. What pisses me off is it wasn't even a PR attempt. mad.gif

Gotta KIV some exercises like the squats until further notice. Grrr.

Take care wei. I had experienced back issue with similar incident. Even though it's could be muscle issue. I was freaking worry about a scar tissue formed just becos of this. ZZZ... No one wish to have weaker tissue on back which is very prone to injury.
