QUOTE(Eugene91 @ Oct 21 2010, 08:52 PM) Also note the pricing, lower than SXPS16. Almost similar to Studio 15. Is it a good thing? Really curious about the JBL subwoofer cos usually only available at >rm3000~4000 system.Added on October 21, 2010, 9:03 pm QUOTE(highwind85 @ Oct 21 2010, 08:52 PM) This post has been edited by Borsch Soup: Oct 21 2010, 09:03 PM |

You can't say the price is lower.
The price you mentioned is for GT420M and i5-460M only. This is Before GT435M + i7, Backlit Keyboard, Bluetooth, Full HD screen. Those features are Already included in Studio XPS 16. Added on October 21, 2010, 9:06 pmWe have been discussing it here, although it should probably be renamed to Dell XPS / Studio XPS http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f...0#entry37207023 This post has been edited by LightningFist: Oct 21 2010, 09:06 PM |

Let me tell you something I've used JBL Subwoofer on a laptop it is terribly soft and of poor quality. One certainly does not need to be charged a huge amount for it.

Knockout? You are totally forgetting that is the converted US price.
Check the US price of a Studio XPS 16, or an Asus G53JW, or a MBP, and think again. |

well, the hinge is similar to the one on my Asus N81V, though mine is way bigger than XPS...
i thought now the trend is let the monitor to sink a little for easier viewing??? honestly, the design is really like the old Asus N series... This post has been edited by astria: Oct 21 2010, 10:27 PM |

Well, Alienware has 19200x1200 vs 1600x900 of XPS 17.
XPS 17 has GT445M 3GB but not GDDR5/GDDR3. Added on October 22, 2010, 12:21 amUp already, starting RM2999 with i3. But cannot buy yet. Zzz i3. Added on October 22, 2010, 12:48 amOK buyable now. Added on October 22, 2010, 1:29 amForget it. Crappy options, not worth it. Waiting for next gen laptops with AMD or Sandy Bridge. This post has been edited by LightningFist: Oct 22 2010, 01:29 AM |

Nowadays the new products coming out have similar price tag in Malaysia as well in case you haven't noticed.. Look at the recent M101Z... Price tag in Malaysia is similar to USA and other parts of the world is selling it at least RM2k+.. Another one is the new MacBook Air.... USD 999, Malaysia selling it for RM3299... That's almost direct conversion already... G series is a whole diff story I guess.. Many factors affecting it also..Check the US price of a Studio XPS 16, or an Asus G53JW, or a MBP, and think again. |

After looking at the XPS 15 specs and pricing, I am so glad I din buy Lenovo Y460, the pricing is so close. Feels like selling my 4741G for this one.

But eugenchiu you are forgetting the specs of USA laptops and Malaysia laptops are not the same. They typically get more, and better, options, for a much lower price. And you cannot compare the mini because it costs only like, what, RM1000? How does this RM1000 compare to some laptops which cost more than RM1500 more than the one in the USA? Shipping or tax cannot even reach RM1500.

1 - On what do you base this claim? In other countries, particularly USA, you can - while it's still under warranty - get your system replaced by a brand new model of equal or better function and specifications, if there is something wrong. I'm very sure that does not make USA's Dell service any lesser than the one here - if you have In-Home / On-site of course. Oh and yeah, I'm going to find tons of sites and books on how Dell MY's service totally trumps the United States'. Right.
2 - No, Astria mentioned wanting XPS 17. I was just saying it wasn't available in MY. 3 - What are you even saying? I was trying to show how Dell cut me off so quickly when I was asking a genuine question about the product. "System restrict"? I wanted to know why somebody disabled that option. Clearly you need to improve your English and your eyes. |

Sorry to discount your English, I realise this is a forum, and language use is not always a priority.
The Dell guy cut me off, clearly. I did not DC (or at least I'm quite sure I did not because the Chat thing does not need super fast, smooth internet). It's just that they purposely made it so that you cannot order i5 with GT435M or i7 with GT420M, for their own reasons or whatever, and I wanted to know why - before I considered buying it. |

LOL I was not "trippin" or anything. Just understandably fustrated with Dell's shortcomings. And can you blame me? What other choice of laptop can I get with graphics the level of HD 5730, No i7 quad, and not a 4kg+ Alienware? Very few, if any.
I think Acer quality has improved. Not to mention 5650 is Around the same level as the GT420/435M, but not as power hungry. But do you want good warranty service |

Ok, yeah, since GT 420M is like GT 335M, I suppose this is an alternative to the Acer and Asus laptops below RM3000 with 14 inch screens. But then again we were expecting something equal or better to XPS 16, that is the main point.

i wonder if the 420gt and the 435gt is on par with the 5730 or not, the new xps looks a bit sad |

Soup did you miss the part where "XPS will be replacing Studio and Studio XPS"?
And did you know Alienware has/had the same GPU as Studio XPS 16? It's not products competing against each other. The main point is to sell any and all products. Since many will agree to an extent ATI/AMD GPU > Nvidia Geforce this was a bad mistake by Dell. |

How does this RM1000 compare to some laptops which cost more than RM1500 more than the one in the USA? Shipping or tax cannot even reach RM1500. If u mean Netbooks being overly cheap in USA, it's a true fact cause in US they kinda did this on purpose so everyone can have a laptop from the first release...Well put that aside, I am talking about the recent models of laptops of same specs... If you have checked UK and AUS price for M101Z, you'd know that after conversion both UK and AUS selling it for more than RM2K while Malaysia selling it for RM1.5k for the same thing... US around the same price as Malaysia as well... for MBA, i guess u'd know that USA sells the cheapest Apple Mac products and how everyone tries to get hold of 1 from USA... Remember how Apple products are overpriced in Malaysia? Even the entry level MBP was like 40% more expensive than USA... Now the new MBA is only like 5% more expensive than USA.. it's definitely a fact that the prices of laptops in Malaysia are slowly shifting... So in Malaysia now, laptops are not necessary much more expensive just that our options are more restricted.... |

not really a wrong move, more like THE only move...
if they continue to use HD5000, they can't differentiate XPS from SXPS... Added on October 22, 2010, 6:38 pm QUOTE(LightningFist @ Oct 22 2010, 06:35 PM) Trying to negotiate i5 + GT435M. Then I will buy. Or else, a long wait if i were u, i would go for SXPS16...HD5730 is not too shabby... unless u re a die hard NV fanboy... This post has been edited by astria: Oct 22 2010, 06:38 PM |

I would prefer an XPS 17.
But I liked that XPS 15 had an unobstructed vent, and USB 3.0 (for what it's worth), and no leather (I think SXPS comes with leather here by default does it not). Of course upside is ATI 5730 which is the best decision ever made by a Dell employee in my honest opinion. If only this simple feat could be repeated once, and quickly. |

Can anybody who knows about Processors and VRAM...
They claim i5 cannot support 2GB GT435M, this is not true right? Cause they also claim "i7 cannot support 1GB GT420M" which is obviously false. |

OK Dell still refuses to admit the truth...
Anyways I found Sager laptops with 1.5 and 2GB Nvidia VRAM GPU options paired with i5 processors, but Sager warranty is dodgy. Now if only we could pair Sager's obvious understanding of customers' demands with Dell's warranty - hey Dell, I have an idea, acquire Sager! |

nah, they juz want to bundle everything together...
any chance if complain to consumer's association? Added on October 22, 2010, 7:28 pmi juz checked Dell AU... XPS 14 = 740QM + GT 425M + 6GB RAM XPS 15 = 740QM + GT 435M + 6GB RAM XPS 17 = 840QM + GT 445M + 8GB RAM + BD starts from AU$1499 (14 & 15) and AU$2499 (17)... now that's wat ia call product differentiation... less headache for the buyers... pretty good deal considering that SXPS 16 starts from AU$1599 with 460M, HD565v and 6GB RAM... LOL nice try but it has little to do with the consumers' association I'm afraid. But it really irks me that they would lie about it - not just MY, but USA, UK, France, etc. But at least they have XPS 17, we don't!
Dell can go ahead and lose all the customers it wants. Promotes optimus but restricts the actual product. Oh and when I was asking Dell (MY) about it, one "agent" cut me off, while the other "agent" initially claimed that the XPS was only launching in the future. Psshh... Don't Buy XPS! |

XPS 14, USB2.0 should be three. XPS 15 and 17, USB 3.0 two, one combo USB 2.0/SATA.
Yeah the keyboard kinda looks ugly except for the touchpad/palmrest, and the touch media keys kind of suck. Volume/media keys are way better. Don't buy XPS! |

yea..i used to own both m1530 and m1730..both have really nice design..looks more like original dell gaming laptop feeling
the new one jz doesn't have the looks anymore..but then again, aside from the interior looks..exterior looks not bad and the specs seems a lot more worth it..comparing to the old xps..i remember getting my m1530 T8100, 8600m gt at rm4k+ wonder how good is their cooling system..i noe the m1530 is impressive but the m1730 is jz a portable oven xD |

That's not an "error". Dell USA/UK/Europe/Malaysia deliberately did that so that we can't buy it like that. They even continue to lie about it.
Hell, i5 is compatible with 2GB VRAM, and i7 is compatible with 1GB VRAM. Plenty of laptops being sold like that. The XPS 15 vent is quite small, maybe because they are near the large speaker vents? XPS 14 and 17 have smaller and further speaker grilles, but relatively larger air vents. Dell continues to let everyone down. If only SXPS 16 had no leather parts like M1330. Don't buy XPS! |

While the keyboard/touch panel design is a bit lame and nothing like M1330/M1530/XPS 16, the aluminium is nice and the vent is at least unobstructed. If they were to offer proper options as they should (which is why we even get Dell in the first place), I'd buy one within a month.
Does anyone know, the SXPS 16 in Malaysia is sold with leather back, no choice right? |

imo, the new xps design is quite decent... no point to design it as a gaming laptop since they already have AW. yes xps is gaming brand... but kinda no point to have it. I think it more of they want to keep the sxps, and still release a new laptop... because spec and usage wise its very much like the sxps.
And also I never understood why people would put good speakers on a laptop design for home entertainment... i mean, home entertainment, much better to use an external speaker (2.1 configuration) |

Surprised why everyone is so in awe of JBL. It might be just another useless add-on because JBL subwoofer speakers in a similar sized laptop have not impressed me at all. Once again the speakers are tiny and they just made the grille big.
OS Media kit is now charged everywhere (5 pounds in UK, 5 dollars in Aus etc) and even tho I have 3 Dell PCs, one just bought recently, they won't give me one. Zzz Don't Buy XPS! |

I think what the JBL subwoofer do is to make the sound louder and clearer, definitely not the "boom" "boom" "boom" like in normal subwoofer.

LOL? We don't know how soft/loud it is yet. And website reviews mostly cannot be trusted because they are biased most of the time - lauding the products like some god given notebook/handheld.
But if I'm right about JBL subwoofer, even RM30 earphones will be sufficient - the quality is not so bad with "enhancement" software, but it's still bad, and the volume is soft unless you got some loud MP3 or game like I said. |

I will go for Studio XPS 16.
XPS 14 and 15 design seem suck for me,just my personal opinion In term of spec, they are almost the same. GT435 with 2GB ram and ATI5730 with 1GB ram are almost the same. |

Thanks for the suggestion mimi, I do like Studio XPS 16 design more too.. I'm not good with all these hardware stuff so when I saw the GT435 with 2GB ram and ATI5730 with 1GB ram in comparison I thought that 2GB > 1GB automatically lol.
If they are indeed almost the same I should really consider the Studio XPS 16 now too... hmmm. Does it have international warranty tho? |

Well I think i5 is better than i7 quad overall, and Dell still hasn't let up about the GT 435M. We can be certain GT 435M will be much, much hotter than HD 5730.
Radeon HD 6000s are being launched, so hopefully we will see the Mobile version of the successor of 5730/5830. Now if there were SXPS 16 parts and touch panel built into XPS 15 body, that would be awesome. |

It states that the i5 dosent support the 2mb of gt435 if thats the case then u wont be able to get an i5 with a gt435. but like u said hd6000s are launching so hopefully they have something on par with the gt435 that supports i5. then again the question is will they use AMD gpu's for intel processors and are u willing to wait Radeon HD 6000s are being launched, so hopefully we will see the Mobile version of the successor of 5730/5830. Now if there were SXPS 16 parts and touch panel built into XPS 15 body, that would be awesome. |

I have waited >2 months already with no laptop, I miss having one all to myself
If it's a good product I will wait, I really preferred to buy at this time, around November, but others have very limited warranty I cannot trust (after what happened with my last few laptops I am really cautious now). They have AMD fusion and other things coming out, but people give really bad comments about AMD CPUs. I believe i5 is compatible with 2GB VRAM since other laptops are sold with those specs. It's just Dell being Dell. It will be hard for me to accept buying a hot Nvidia GPU, but buying it with i7? I will never repeat that mistake. Bad news is Sandy Bridge products all have quite high TDPs. It's like Intel and Nvidia are competing, who can make the hottest product with the worst relative performance. |

SXPS 16 is HD 5730
I do not like Lenovo laptops. Sager laptops have i5 and fast GPUs, faster than HD 5830/GT 445M. But alas there will be complications if there is something wrong and I need it repaired, etc. Alienware and MSI also have i5 and faster GPUs. There are others too of course, like HP, and Dell Latitude/Precision. Yes, the main thing is I want a laptop with GPU faster or equal to HD 5730, but not as hot as most Nvidias (so it is most likely an AMD). If I bought Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Acer, Sager etc, I will have problems if something goes wrong. Internationally the warranty is not as reliable as Dell. But Dell had to screw us with the new XPS. Don't Buy XPS! |

talk abt int'l warranty, none is better than Asus...
default already 2yrs int'l warranty, with the option extending to 3... that's y i dun mind importing one from US to use for my study in Australia... besides, the general build quality of Asus, imho, is better than Dell... This post has been edited by astria: Oct 25 2010, 07:15 AM |

Putochip, other laptops ARE sold with i5 (460/560 etc) + GPUs Faster Than GT435/445M... that's just a fact... what do you work for Dell or something?
i7 quad is pretty hot if you're in Malaysia or when your room temperature is close to 26/27 and it is scorching outside. Not to mention humidity is high. Nvidia GPUs are hot, that's also a fact. There are exceptions but in general that's that. Just use some Nvidia + i7 laptops and then compare. |

notice that xps15 had HDMI & mini display port while xps14 don't hv display port.
so is that mean we can hook out 2 external monitor via HDMI & mini display port from xps15?? |

Of course dude. My 6 year old Dell was like USD1000+ at the time, and now that is higher than the price of starting XPS 17, or other high end laptops like Sager/Asus/Dell! And it was only Pentium M 1.5GHz, 256 RAM or 512.
But 5k M1330 - quite a lot. I don't have the discrete GPU M1330, but its battery is like a Macbook's - goes on forever. |

My M15x GTX260M runs at 80'c at peak, so i think this wouldnt be hot, that ATi 4670 inside the XPS Studio 16 can reach 72'c or even higher, so it is ATi cooler? I had used so many laptop before, what u mean cool for a laptop? running peak at 50'c? u think water cooling ar? even my desktop with water cooling, at peak, also reach 50'c Not all Nvidia is hot, is depends on what heat sink is used for the laptop, the air flow of the laptops. Let me give an example for, we dont say Dell/Alienware ok? We take Asus as an example, same graphic card same proccessor G53JW vs G73JW, both also having GTX460M While G53JW have 78'c at peak, but G73JW have only 67'c? while G73JH with Ati 5870 have 69'c? ATi cooler? dont just heard other people say, try it out 1st. Dont belive what im talking? belows link are prove for 5870 is hotter, while the picture shows the Nvidia GTX460M is cooler http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Update...ok.31186.0.html Attached thumbnail(s) |

They just use typical heat pipes from the CPU and GPU. The only advantage is, there are 2 fans in the laptop and they are quite quiet under load. Obviously Alienware is different, the body is huge so it can take i7-920XM at 74C which is staggeringly cool - assuming your i7-920XM is Alienware.
If you are able to achieve 74C at actual full load over an extended time with i7 quad in a laptop with the normal, average size and build, i.e. no huge cooling system like Alienware, in non-air conditioned conditions, then it would be something amazing. G73JW and G73JH may not have the exact same build and parts, this I am not sure, but in any case 2C is not a significant difference. G73 is larger than G53 and should by default be slightly less warm even with the same cooling system and fans. Notebookcheck temperature measurements are inconsistent and not error-free. So while 78 and 67 may seem like a large difference, is errors are taken into account, the real difference may be less significant. But I was not talking about Asus G53/73 specifically. The average laptop (Acer, Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu, Toshiba, Sony) with i7-720QM or better will have much higher Full Load over extended period (like 1 or 2 hours) temperatures if, even if you go by Notebookcheck's reviews and data. |

That's great, but how long was the test run? Compared to running a benchmark or game, at high settings/medium, over at least half an hour, in a non-air conditioned room.

'10 minutes ish, the temps increase quickly to 65 from 50 ish, then, remained stable after that. Games, i think it wasnt that hot too, as games arent as demanding as those stress test apps. |

Well, some Nvidia cards aren't that hot. The newer ones in particular have improved a little.
What I mean is pairing discrete GPUs with i7 makes it hotter than most dual cores. Max temperature can depend on the system. Here we have max temp claims of 60+ to 70C, but "reviews" suggest they usually are at high 70s and can move to 80-90C depending on the laptop. Its limit the card can withstand is about 100-105C. |

not fair if u full load a i7 (quad core) stress test compare to dual core, disadvantage in temperature since its doing more work
try load 2 out of 4 core from i7, that is fair comparison generally the graphic chip (IC only) can go over 100°C, but other components are not. |

Hi guys,
I've been waiting around for a while now to get a replacement to my outdated Compaq. I've been constantly checking the Dell website for a computer I want and when the new XPS came out, I was so interested. Other than the i7 & Graphic Card option, the heat issue (that may not be a problem at all) and other alterenatives, such as Asus, are there any other significant reasons why you would not purchase this notebook? 1. Warranty: I'll be going to UK next year to continue my Law degree. Will I encounter a problem with warranty location transfer and are there anythings I should know about it such as certain warranty extension options not being valid in the UK. 2. RAM: Is there a significant difference between the 4GB and the 6GB (other than the price of course)? Why do most people buy symmetrical RAM (2x2GB RAM and 2x3GB RAM, rather than buying 1x2GB and 1x4GB)? 3. Alternatives: Is there an upperhand if I purchase an Asus? If yes, what alternative computers should I look into? 4. Keyboard: Is it really that bad, excluding the absence of a numpad? 5. Chasis: Again, a significant reason? My friend says the way I choose a notebook is like choosing a wife, but I just want to make sure I get a notebook suitable to my needs. |

I don't think there will be problems as long as you purchase International warranty from Dell. Most Asus laptops come with 2 year International warranty as standard 2. I din't notice much difference between 4GB and 6GB RAM. I don't think its really necessary... might as well wait until RAM price drop only buy hehe 3. Personally, I preferred Asus's design and speakers compared to that of Dell's XPS 4. You can always get an external numpad (especially for data entry) 5. I think its best if you can go and take a look at both models and decide which 1 appeals to you most~ Yeah, choosing laptop is like choosing a wife (short-term one though) haha Anyway, hope you get to choose the most suitable "wife" This post has been edited by [PF] T.J.: Oct 28 2010, 11:22 AM |

You want a numpad, but not everyone does
"Other than the i7 & Graphic Card option, the heat issue (that may not be a problem at all) and other alterenatives" then there you go, you should buy it since there are no other major reasons not to. But, if you really want i7, the Asus i7/HD 5730 would be better than this in terms of specs (not sure about the resolution and screen size on that one). |

Too compact? Some say it is too bulky lol.
Top panel is not too impressive, i.e. speakers and touch panel, power button area. But aluminium is nice. About colour I'm not sure if it's grey, or black, or silver or what. |

It seems that the people who would have a problem with the new XPS 15 are avid gamers or at least people who demand higher performance rigs. For a basic user like me, who may play some games like SC2, Civ 5 and Dota, I think it would be sufficient. If not, are there any other notebook alternatives that are good value for money.

Lmao look at the damn weight of G53/G73!
I was using a 14 inch notebook or 5 years (but it was not really light). So when I bought a 15.6 inch laptop, weighing in at 2.75kg, it was very bulky at first - hard to move around on the table. Of course it isn't heavy to move around, but I mean it's really bulky. If you're not the type who likes huge machines, the G series is a bad idea. Otherwise, Alienware or G series would be good (except you have to import G series as it is hugely overpriced). Now if Dell quit screwing about and offered i5 + GT435M then I would buy XPS 15. They only offer 3 years warranty through customisation here >.< |

LOL. Yeah they have good cooling systems, if that is the hardware you are referring to. Their high specs should not contribute to weight.
A light laptop is not necessarily poorly built or flimsy. Something heavy is again not always well-built or sturdy, just rather difficult to push around on a desk due to its greater center of gravity. I don't think 3GB RAM sticks exist. But there are dual/triple channel RAM configs, though one person mentioned the difference is negligible. It's the things you mentioned in the "other than" part that makes many of us not want to buy XPS. The whole graphics card issue. And yes, some people are waiting for conclusive reviews, but in my experience, reviews don't tell the truth. Sure, forums of people complaining about the product they bought may be biased slightly on account of the purchaser's anger, but they contain more truth than your average online review. |

So I would suppose from what you guys are saying with regards to the way I'm answering and the usage I'll get out of the computer, buying this rig is quite a good deal? The only problem I have is the warranty issue. That's problem my biggest headache now.

Give Dell a call tomorrow during office hours. Try to ask for documentation.
Tell them about your situation. Yes this laptop is a good deal, though it has disappointed many. And with warranty there shouldn't be much concern. |

QUOTE(wongpeter @ Oct 29 2010, 06:40 AM) If it is a good deal then why has it been disappointing to many? Seems to be a contradictory statement. 1) design... compare that with Studio XPS, or even the classic XPS, u'll get wat we mean2) customization... it's either quad core + GT 435M or dual core + GT 425M... does not make sense at all considering Dell has always been flexible when comes to hardware combination... and the SA have not been helpful in explaining why... my guess is either Dell juz want to bundle up the hardware, or they are using different mobo for different CPU (but for the latter, quad core + GT 425M should still be possible) 3) JBL audio... i ve no experience with JBL audio, but according to some ppl who ve dealt with it before, volume is on the soft side... at base spec, yes, it's a pretty good deal, considering Lenovo Y460 with the same spec is selling at the same price as well... but if u want quad core + GT 435M, well, there are other alternatives... such as Asus N53Jq, rm500 more with GT 425M, but with better features (Bang & Olusfen audio for a start) and design... Reviews look good so far, are all you users happy with yours? After the disaster that was my XPS M1530 (RM6006) with its corroded palmrest, faulty GPU and bad thermal pasting, I'm a little on the hesitant side but I really need a decent laptop as my M1530 has been failing.
What's worse is I have to order it from Malaysia and get it couriered to England. (What a predicament). This post has been edited by ZeratoS: Oct 29 2010, 09:12 AM |

wongpeter: Yeah, what Astria said
On the other hand, if you want entry level i7 quad, if you want 2GB Nvidia card of slightly lower performance than ATI 5730, if you like the design (something less important than specs, on account of the price), then it's great. Zerato: Oh, because you want the backlit keyboard and cheaper price, I see. |

Why would it be sarcasm? Without the present discounts available to Dell UK customers, the XPS 15 in the UK would set you back much, much more than the Malaysian one does, according to the exchange rate of course, putting purchasing power aside.
According to some, Dell UK's XPS 15s have no backlit keyboard. Thus I assumed that would be why you would buy it in Malaysia rather than the UK. |

OH sorry D: I misread it as it was..pretty darn late over there. My apologies, and yes the VAT is a monster, sucking a good RM500. I could courier via FedEx for the same price and have it appear one day later..from Malaysia for the same price.
They do have the option of having a backlit keyboard, however I believe it to be 25 pounds, also more than what you'd pay here (About ~RM55?). Way to swindle their customers. Other reasons being that I MAY get a discount see. Your thoughts on the rig itself? Good? Bad? As a user I mean. I don't buy those online reviews, all biased. |

Totally biased.
Since I haven't used it myself I cannot say, but according to a user's screenshot and comments http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?act=ST&f...0#entry37391113 temperature management (about the most important thing) is good. Design has improved (not aesthetically, but functionally). Specs are decent but not enough to please previous users of XPS and their expectations. As soon as the options I want are made available I will buy it (that is, if the next new thing isn't out). If you use Windows 7 then you know it is slow anyway, so reviews that claim their new purchases are "blisteringly fast" are just full of crap. In the UK there was a very short deal for <500 pounds for a loaded XPS 15. Unfortunately it's gone now. But, if you had to pay 500 for shipping, does that justify having to go through shipping then? It's still a 2-3 week wait. |

I have a XPS M1530 son, and the specs are definitely an improvement for price ratio.
I dislike the UK keyboard, and my cousin works in Dell Malaysia, so better option I suppose. Temperature management is a crucial feature to me. If its a huge leap over the M1530 (which gives me like 80c after Arctic Cooling MX-2 applied) I'm all for it. This post has been edited by ZeratoS: Oct 30 2010, 01:04 AM |

I mean Windows 7 definitely is nicer, with the looks and new functions and stuff. But I have used XP, Vista, and 7 across many desktops/laptops, and while Vista's speed depended on the PC, even for faster, newer PCs on paper, Windows 7 was slower for me than XP. I don't use SSD.

I was not aware that Mid Valley had a PC expo - I'm in PJ/KL.
Ironically there used to be a Dell store in Mid Valley, but I'm not do not know whether or not it still exists. Busy at the moment, though I desperately wanted to order a new laptop, the current state of the config does not please me. Waiting for stores to have it, I guess. |

Yeah, of course, PC Fair gives no discount. They may have "free gifts" which shops give anyway.
PC Fairs often have the fliers only, but not the product. You may have to "order" and wait 2/3 months. |

That depends on the model. Higher end models they may keep one or two. I know they won't bring more than two G series for Asus in at any booth cause realistically not many people want one.
Also I checked with my cousin, not likely to have better specs so soon. You might want to keep waiting or go for it. I'm not too pleased with the GPU but its still a value buy. |

Yes it's a value buy (for the i7 + GT 435M).
But I'm looking for i5 with the GPU. Well, I don't expect the specs to change for the better, as poor as some of them may be at the moment. But I do want some of the options to change, otherwise I'd rather wait. It's not too long before Sandy Bridge rolls around, and not that it's extra great or anything, but if the current offering sucks (to me), then why not. |

I declined, I refuse to pay RM5~6k (USD$2199) for equal or less with regards to specs. |

That's funny, why would a parent prefer a Mac or a brand? Hehe.
MBPs are designed good, tho MacBook was flawed in some ways. But their battery life is legendary (though a good Dell or Acer would be just as well). If you were in Malaysia expect 6k specs to be equal to that of a RM2599 laptop, or much worse. |

No I don't mean which. 3:55:06 PM Customer James I mean any Sales Rep, such as yourself. 3:55:24 PM Customer James I was wondering if you could help out with this. 3:57:01 PM Agent Sandy_Lee as this is fixed config, hence i5 goes with 1GB & i7 goes with 2GB 3:58:29 PM Customer James No staff can change it if I want to purchase? 4:00:42 PM Agent Sandy_Lee nope 4:01:04 PM Customer James Ok, then can I ask 4:01:12 PM Customer James is XPS 17 ever going to be available in Malaysia? 4:02:46 PM Agent Sandy_Lee not at the moment yet & chances is quite slim due to market demands 4:03:07 PM Customer James and will the i5-560M processor ever be available with XPS laptops? |

Yeah if you bought overseas some Acer laptops can be configured with i7 dual core, at low prices. Not necessarily matched with good GPUs though. Not expensive either.
I think in Malaysia you can buy HP, Fujitsu, and Dell laptops with i7 dual, with good-high end GPUs, but these are immensely expensive... |

But they do have the best service in the world that's for sure. I complain on twitter and got a response from Dell Sr. Management in Australia. They helped me and sent a technician to replace my mobo in less than 2 days (all the way in Malaysia)

Great specs at that price?
It appears slightly cheaper only because its specs are lower. You need RM411 to get 1080p B+RGLED, and the GPU is inferior to HD 5730 anyway. Tray loading Optical DD... shall I go on? LOL Putochip I can't take that risk - sometimes they will charge re-shipping fee or repackaging fee unless there's a problem (cosmetic or hardware issue). If there was something wrong then they shouldn't charge anything. |

Who knows when the new products will be launched?
They took a long time to come up with XPS to succeed the Studio XPS and XPS M1330/1530. Vent design is a plus, aluminium as well. It may look quite bulky from the front, and the top panel is not very appealing, but the biggest letdown is the specs. Maybe when Sandy Bridge is released, they will put those into the new XPS with new motherboards and better GPUs. |

I've ordered a Dell XPS15 last month. Now they delayed till 25th November. I'm starting to think there may be some issues with the hardware.

If there were issues with hardware these would have been present on the first day or next month. Dell does not typically correct these with existing models, and the best they'll do is release a BIOS update. If it's a battery issue, replacement. If it's a physical issue, wait for the new product (who knows when?).
You just hope that it has no problems. Oh wait no that's for other products. Dell will replace yours if it really does. |

We're not sure about warranty, with XPS Premier vs Dell Care.
http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopi...entry37555724 So far nobody has been able to explain the differences comprehensively, not even Dell themselves. But you could ask Dell. |

Someone should open a thread for XPS 15 owners
I ordered the XPS 15 with i7, nvidia 435m, and 8gb ram configuration on 1st of Nov... Initially the EDD was 24 Nov, after a week i waited, it changed to 15 Nov, and it has been delivered to me on last Saturday, 13 Nov. 13 days including weekend and working days, not bad. |

@makubexong,
Fast and responsive generally. Startup time slower, due to Dell's numerous softwares. Took 2 DVDs to create the factory restore discs. Temperature acceptable, slightly warm over the touchpad, and left region of the keyboard. Noise is negligible under normal surfing, unless you have started playing games, the fan noise will become quite prominent after it works at full speed. The size of the laptop is generally longer than the average 15.4 inch laptop. Speakers sound quality is good. However the bass is rather "tight", not so natural. Webcam works fine under adequate lightning. Use MiniDisplay port to VGA port adapter, if you like to do presentation using old projector, in my case, I bought the original Apple adapter, RM99 with 1 year warranty, works fine. The harddisk bay is not readily accessible, have to remove the top cover of the laptop (including touchpad) in case you want to upgrade the storage device to SSD. Added on November 17, 2010, 8:51 pm@Casperwinde, i didn't order backlit keyboard, it might look stylish, but afterall it still consumes more battery (u can adjust the brightness anyway). Added on November 17, 2010, 9:06 pmPlease note that i didn't order 1080p screen also. Maybe that is the thing that causes delay? For me 768p resolution is fair enough, and comfortable. 1366x768 resolution on 14 inch is simply... too small and not good for my shortsightedness eyes, lol. With RM400, i think we might as well get a better monitor with even higher resolution and screen size This post has been edited by schwarzschild: Nov 17 2010, 09:06 PM |

Received my xps 15 already
Pros: -beautiful screen , VERY beautiful! -1366*768 is sweet enough for me -temp is acceptable. when normal usage max 50C, when gaming max 70C(i using coolermaster notepal and evecool fairy, testing game is cod7 ) -speed is awesome -great gaming experience (better than my old 8600m GT) -beautiful backlight keyboard (automatic off if u dint touch the keyboard, sweet!) -great and loud speaker with subwoofer -touchpad is good with multitouch and smooth -only HDMI , is ok for me since my acer 24" using that cable -many multimedia function key which is sweet! (can change tthe setting from the shourtcut key on the laptop, thanks schwarzschild for the solution!) Bads: -design is wierd but acceptable -too many dell software makes start up slow~ ( i already uninstall most of them ) -battery life not yet try conclusion: no regret getting it. it is a great laptop! ![]() ![]() ![]() processor is i7 740 not 820. i dont know why CPUIZ show 820 (sorry for poor english and low quality camera , and i compare it with my old vostro This post has been edited by lengnui89: Nov 19 2010, 12:20 PM |

nice quick review lengnui89!
regarding F1-12 button, maybe the next BIOS gonna fix that. it sound weird, to be honest and for preinstalled softwares, its common for first hand laptop. just simply uninstall the not-necessary program and optimized your startup using third-party freeware like Ccleaner. |

@lengnui89, just open windows mobility center to change the Fn key behaviour. To access it, simply press the shorcut button over the touch panel over the right top of the keyboard, the place where you can c Waves Maxx Audio thing. If not sure about where to look for it, go to start, type windows mobility center and search for it. You don't need to access BIOS to change Fn key behavior
Added on November 19, 2010, 9:00 am@J.J, wow... what a nice spec u have there... Max out everything u could, lol. I guess the price is around RM4400? This post has been edited by schwarzschild: Nov 19 2010, 09:00 AM |

My youngest bro recently bought Vostro 3400 isn't really that bloated, the overall startup consider acceptable for me. Lets see how bloated Dell factory OS installation can be for XPS 15. |

This is extremely unethical, no parts and put up for sale. Promised a date but fine prints in contract state dates are flexible. I wrote back asking for immediate cancellation. QUOTE(thomastwh @ Nov 19 2010, 08:43 PM) --------------------------- Well not everybody. This is my chronology 24/10/2010 (ORDER) ---> 11/11/10 (INITIAL PROMISE TO DELIVER) ---> 15/11/10 (REVISION 1) ---> 25/11/10 (REVISION 2) ---> 29/11/10 (NOW - REVISION 3) Today receive another crappy email telling me shortage of part thus the new date. This is extremely unethical, no parts and put up for sale. Promised a date but fine prints in contract state dates are flexible. I wrote back asking for immediate cancellation. Life could have been easier dealing with other brands which don't overpromise. |

QUOTE(vernon91 @ Nov 19 2010, 08:50 PM) The specs I ordered: -i7, 435, 6GB, Otherwise, everything stock standard. Cannot understand their statements. The funny thing is that after receiving notification of deferment to 25/11, I wrote back to complain stating I am willing to accept until 18/11 only. Anything more I will not have time to backup my software before leaving for overseas. The DELL guy wrote back stating they have "HELPED" and will rush it. When I receive the shitty email today - I really blew my top. Their meaning of help is more deferment. Any recommendation of other brands - with reliable customer service? |

The spec and the price was rather attractive. However, cant Dell design a better laptop instead of current weird XPS design. I felt it looked bulky and not elegant

QUOTE(LightningFist @ Nov 19 2010, 07:19 PM) Those who have received their XPS 15s, i5/420 or i7/435, could you guys post screens and comments, like on gaming max temp, plamrest, keyboard heat, quality and satisfaction? TY QUOTE(schwarzschild @ Nov 17 2010, 08:47 PM) @makubexong, Here is example for i7/435 temperature... no external cooling solution used.Fast and responsive generally. Note that after reach max gaming temperature, the temperature dropped 30 Celsius 1 minute after stop gaming. Fan noise also diminished drastically. Congratulation.. finally u get ur lappie already.. hehe.. and thanks for the review as well.. =)Pros: -beautiful screen , VERY beautiful! ![]() ![]() ![]() processor is i7 740 not 820. i dont know why CPUIZ show 820 (sorry for poor english and low quality camera , and i compare it with my old vostro |

About the posted HWM screenshot,
great minimum temps, if these were operating temps and not "recorded during initial start up/booting temps" which some softwares can detect. Max temps were ok on the CPU, a little on the high side for the GPU, and in this climate it is what it is. It appears the CPU has lower temps than the GPU which is usually the case, but I have experienced i7 quad laptops with CPU temp greater than the Nvidia GPU (98C vs 95C). That GPU was however between GT 420M and GT 435M, so an ultimate max temp of 92C on the hottest day with no rain/air conditioning/cooling pad is reasonable but not pleasant. |

I'm planning to buy this. 4, 6, or 8GB? I'm looking to go for 6.
Is i7 and 2GB GPU necessary? I'm currently opting for i5 and 1GB GPU. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I do play occasional FPS's and FIFA. |

Then, its normal for low score for that "Desktop performance for Windows Aero",
since for Optimus, Win 7 will calculate that score based on Intel HD, not nVidia GT420M... |

50-54C max temp for GPU while gaming, are you kidding me? That's impossible unless you live in space. The GPU "gaming max temp" should be at least from 70-100C, lower of course because you're using i5. Similarly gaming temps for i5 would not be at the 50+ area. That's usually the idle temp.

yes USB 3.0 is compatible with USB 2.0. but using a usb 2.0 product on it will just make it like a normal usb 2.0 port.

I think there's still a few laptops and desktops assembled in Butterworth. Those business units like precision.
XPS should be assembled in China. Advice for those who wants to purchase this system, make sure you check with the sales guy on the delivery time. Most of the part shortages happen mostly during holiday season and CNY. Anyway, the speakers on the new XPS is very good. Tested my friend unit recently. They have the same rated TDP of 45 watts as Clarksfield i7 but that rated TDP actually includes an integrated graphics sub system as well. Therefore, Sandy Bridge quad cores can work without having to rely on discrete graphics which is a great boost in battery life for mobile quad core computing. |

QUOTE(arinsms @ Dec 1 2010, 11:42 AM) LOL at this.My Dell laptop has given me plenty of headaches over the years (way back when, the warranty was not nearly as good as what it is now). Yet I still continue to buy them? Maybe because only Dell had customisable high end laptops (at least until the goddamn new XPS came along) and great in-home service. |

QUOTE(neo_himura @ Dec 1 2010, 10:51 AM) patient? hw am i supposed to be patient if every1 tht ordered after me already got their laptop... its more than 1 month now.. Bro, I got the same problem as you. My notebook was in Malaysia already last week, supposed deliver on Monday. Then suddenly the EDD changed to 14th Dec. After many many calls to them I found out that the shortage is actually the bag (at least for my case). The notebook is already available but in Penang. What I did was call them and ask to deliver separately. Got my notebook 2 days later (yesterday) and still waiting for the bag.guess wut, now the EDD on dell's website shows 15th dec.. wut the~ |

I guess my EDD will only be available on 6th Dec since Sat and Sun is weekend. Unless miracle happens on Friday. Really looking forward to getting the XPS. Just curious, what is the different for the Warranty between Premier Service and Complete Cover? What to these differences offers? Tried googling it but did not find anything that mention about these specifically.

Complete Cover - warranty option that covers even accidental damages. e.g. water spilled on the laptop.
Without that the warranty will only cover manufacturer defects. For example, 3-year XPS Premier Service with 1-year CompleteCover - So within the 1st year, you will enjoy the benefit of warranty coverage for both manufacturer defects and accidental damages. 2nd year onwards, you only get the coverage of manufacturer defects. 3-year XPS Premier Service with 3-year CompleteCover - You will enjoy the benefit of warranty coverage for both manufacturer defects and accidental damages for full 3 years. Hmm, is any new processor coming out in the near future? I'm planning to get one now.. but since I ve heard that the Sandy Bridge is coming out , is it advisable to wait for just another month? I still have until end of feb.. and assuming dell delays their shipment, its best if the latest I order at end of January.

I vote for screen, since that one would be harder to upgrade later...
Unless you can fully utilize the 8GB... |
