You do realize that you can't practise as a physician in Australia without first completing an internship and then obtaining full registration with the respective medical boards.

Well, if you're focusing solely on AMC accreditation, just about anyone can work in Australia as long as you pass your AMC exam... surely students from other private medical schools (which by the way promote themselves as world class) can pass that too since they're pretty much subjected to the same training conditions as Monash Sunway graduates.

Whatever happens after graduation is none of the university's business and so accreditation does not necessarily translate into employment opportunities.

What makes a university education count is not the content of the course, but rather the people you meet and interact along the way. Can you imagine what studying at an institution, where most if not all of the students just can't wait to leave the country, would be like ?! Monash Sunway may have the Monash name attached to it, but are you getting an experience that is different from what you would get in any other private medical school? Because ultimately Monash Sunway is a PRIVATE initiative, whereas Monash Clayton is a PUBLIC institution. You wouldn't find any Australian medical student (or for that matter UK or USA) eagerly trying to leave their country after graduation - how can a country ever improve with such a mentality as ours ???

this is not new........the mbbs monash msia degree had amc recognition right from the beginning........certainly they use it as a selling point........

what most people don't realise however, is that the right to work in oz is not determined by your qualification, but by your status with the dept of immigration and citizenship.......as a foreigner, you need to have an appropriate visa to work........and the problem is then, for monash msia grads to be eligible for theses visas......

onshore australian graduates will be eligible for one of two categories of work visa.....and once they get a housemanship offer (ie placed) they WILL get the visas, by virtue of having studied in oz for at least 2 years........

monash msia graduates do NOT have this right.........

look carefully at the prospectus, and website......in small prints, they say they do not guarantee availability of housemanship jobs, anywhere......

i heard some msia grads have gone to work in oz......i am not sure how they did that, some could already have been oz pr..............in which case, of course it's not an issue......

Why would their graduates want to leave anyway....? The medical system in their respective countries are already so good. Malaysia, on the other hand........

They wouldn't, which is exactly why Malaysian graduates should stay to improve the system (sadly not the case). As much as they hate to admit it, most private students would agree that the country is a lost cause. What's the point of having so many colleges (infrastructure-wise) when there are simply not enough brains to staff them properly?

I also came to know that recent monash sunway mbbs graduates has secured internships in oz and this is a positive development and hope to encourage the staff and academics to work harder.

Eventhough it seems like they dont have this right for working visa - they will still get the 457 visa eventually coz once they are matched, the hospital HR will sponsor them for one - not too difficult, i dont think there's a case where visa is an issue (very unlike the UK).

And come on, paying 400k for an internship in aussie is DAMN COOL, but in expense of recognition from singapore. Once aussie is saturated (in 2-3 years time) then monash malaysia might not be a good choice anymore.

457 is the other category of visa for housemans....it's actually a sponsored temporary business visa......

Are you sure that they've secured spots for internships? As far as I know, hospitals are struggling with spots for internships. For the mainland unis, they have reserved spots for their own local graduates. For tasmania, we aren't guaranteed a place in tassie. It's proposed that they will try to increase the internship spots. I reckon for international students, even with 'secured' internship placements, they will send you to rural areas.

Just wondering, is the syllabus for MBBS monash sunway based on Malaysia or Aussie? I mean, there will be differences in prevalence in diseases, risk factors etc.

Only for the 2010/2011 match, because they had more internship positions than local graduates. This would not happen in the future.

THe syllabus is mostly based on Aussie with slight modifications.

At least, it is a start and a precedent has been set. Not surprising though for an Oz-linked MBBS degree.

Guys sorry for interrupting the discussion. May I know if the medicine book is provided by the university or have to be bought beforehand? Also, is there any book that are good to read before attending any class as I almost forgot everything about biology right now

where you going for medical course.

for most medical schools, there will be a list of recommended textbooks by the respective departments and there will also be a list of books recommended by the seniors. you are free to use whichever book you like though.

in my opinion a good book is a book that you read. so any book is ok as long as you enjoy reading it and will do so consistently.

Don't worry too much of the books. Your lecturers will usually tell you which book to get.

And for attire wise, only monash mbbs have the freedom to dress in whatever way they want. The rest of the uni in Malaysia requires formal attire IINM.

Well it all depends on which university you're going to - the five-year medical degrees tend to combine anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology etc. "basic sciences" all in the first 2 years, whereas some six-year courses teach anatomy, physiology, biochemistry in the first 2 years and pathology, pharmacology and microbiology for year 3.

Don't worry, you won't have to know any of the medical stuff before you actually start your course, but if you are keen on brushing up your biology knowledge, I would recommend getting Saladin's Anatomy and Physiology. It provides fairly basic stuff covering all areas including anatomy, histology, physiology and some biochemistry.

You'll probably know which book suits you best when you actually use them, so I'd suggest browsing the various titles in the university library in your first few weeks of study. Also, your seniors will most probably guide you in finding the relevant texts for your course.

Added on March 31, 2011, 12:39 amno offense but in malaysia, as long as u have money, getting into any private medical schools is not a prob. For those who did REALLY bad still can enter as long as they complete the sure pass foundation. Not sure bout overseas though

in a bad year, that may get you into imu......but lately i think not possible....

it will get you into pmc 6 years programme.......

it will get you into most of the upstart med schools like mahsa, cucms etc.......

any of the above is considered 'well respected'?.......
