QUOTE(zstan @ Jun 30 2010, 09:58 AM) JPA students? I spoke to JPA less than 2 months ago and they said not "accredited" yet and they will take a number of years to assess the graduates before sending students there. But on the website it said it took only one round of audit to get it accredited and now it seems JPA students are going there. |

QUOTE(zstan @ Jun 30 2010, 10:42 AM) thats because their first batch just graduated one month ago..so 2 months ago haven't accredited.you are right in this case. JPA did told me that there are students doing A levels in UCSI but these students are to be sent overseas as the Medic course is not accredited yet. Maybe they decided to gostan now. Not surprising. Apa pun boleh.jpa students are already there..doing a-levels.. |

Another new medical college, this time in Alor Setar known as Insaniah University College.
Why Insaniah? Among others: Memorising certain chapters of the Holy Quran Emphasis on Islamic Medical knowledge and practices Accredited with MMC, MOA & MOHE Sponsorship from PTPTN, MARA and Islamic Development Bank October 2010 intake (Limited Places) I wonder how many other medical colleges are on the way? |

Whats the point of being crowded with in bigger towns and cities where you will not be able to learn much. If there are better chances of learning in rural areas, then so be it.
But the gomen has got to make the move to send more of these senior specialists to the rural areas before putting the housemen there. I think increase allowances and incentives like better promotion prospects are some of the enticing factors. |

QUOTE(limeuu @ Sep 23 2010, 01:24 PM) you obviously do not have a working spouse, and school going children, or elderly dependant parents...... We have got to start somewhere, no? If everyone is only going to bother about their own selves, then dont complain about the overcrowding in the bigger general hospitals. We should not be stagnating the housemen in the rural areas, it has to be by way of rotation. The gomen should be transparent in such matters.not to mention the attractions of big city lifestyle.... and of course, if you are a junior doctor, getting sent to a rural hospital means possible stagnation in post graduate training, sometimes forgotten.... and finally, there are no big nice private hospitals in remote areas to join later...... I know its difficult to get moving but inserting little clauses into the medical program application with a proviso that such national service is a MUST for all successful appllicants. Surely, we can start at the "fringe" areas that are located nearer to the bigger towns and we move inwards from there. |

To a certain extent, I truly believe that when things suddenly reached a "tipping point", you will be utterly surprised!
What "tipping point" do you perceive that will bring about transparency in the context of medical education, training and placement?
In the whole context of medicine in Malaysia, whether in education, training and placement, most of the comments have been negative, discouraging and downright demoralising. Yet, year in year out more and more students are fighting for places in med schools. Quality of healthcare and related services, both in public and private hospitals have been deteriorating amidst daily complaints from unsatisfactory services. How low can we go? Obviously, we are nowhere compared to Singapore but surely a turnaround is possible though we may be 5 or 10 years behind in quality and standards. (This is not only in medicne. We are getting nearer to become a "failed" country.) I am encouraged by the economic transformation in Indonesia and most things over there can only improve for the betterment of the ppl. You only need to have a good and focused leader! |

Hope its true and the start of better things to come for the medical fraternity. Dont know whether its one of similar arrangement like New York University in Abu Dhabi. |

Good for John Hopkins. But having my doubts on the Malaysian partner, not a very reputable guy. It was a "backdoor" joint venture thing thru the acquisition of a stake in an ancillary medical related industry in the US.

I thought Newcastle University medical school is supposed to be doing its intake only next year but was surprised to read in the papers that its September intake is in progress.
Only one or two weeks ago, there were still in the process of recruiting staff to set up its administrative unit! |

In her speech at Cyberjaya med school yesterday, Dr. Siti Hasmah asked that doctors completing housemanship be sent to rural areas esp Sabah and Sarawak to provide adequate medical care to the ppl there. And she highlighted that this is to be done on a ROTATION basis.
And I totally agreed with her suggestion. However, she indicated that housemanship should be carried out at bigger hospitals where the facilities and the teaching resources are more up to date for more effective training. |

QUOTE(DarkNite @ Sep 28 2010, 01:13 PM) I guess she was speaking from experience of her younger days of visiting the numerous clinics in the rural areas of Kedah via land rover. At that time there was no paved road, just dirt tracks. It is in the rural areas where the poor, displaced, neglected and marginalised ppl need professional medicare the most.I also do agreed with her but Bolehland is unfortunately not known for transparency and competency in implementation of good ideas. This is where 80% of the population are! |

QUOTE(zstan @ Sep 29 2010, 09:17 AM) i beg to differ... Agreed, currently overworked. But the number of doctors can surely be increased to share out the responsibiliteis.doctors in rural areas are usually overworked(due to serious lack of colleagues) till the extent that they don't really have much time to eat and sleep. It has to be on a rotation basis for a couple of years. |

An off topic comment.
Alliance College of Medical Sciences advert: "For the first 100 successful online applicants for medical related courses, an Apple iphone will be given free....." Looks like there will be Mcdonald's, KFC, Pizza and JUSCO vouchers to given out in the near future. Sure, they are taking advantage of the gomen liberalising adverts on medical and related services. Hope the docs dont go to: "Come for 1st appointment, 2nd appointment free!" This post has been edited by cckkpr: Sep 29 2010, 11:17 AM |

Higher Education Minister said:
"Malaysia needs another 15,553 doctors in the public sector by 2020......last year, 29 tertiary institutions produced 1,845 medical graduates, while 1,908 were from overseas ......by 2020 expect local graduates to increase to 3,125....." Wow! overseas graduates more than local graduates.....who says Malaysians no money and cannot afford overseas medic education? And we can only increase local graduates by only 70% by Year 2020! And dont worry, the 15,553 are only the needs in the public sector. It does not include the incresing requirements in the private sector. Good doctors are always in demand, wherever you are! |

i suggest you all do your maths carefully....15k extra doctors by 2020 means 10 years from now, ie, 1.5k doctors a year. assuming half of the new doctors leave the public sector (lately, it's less than 1/2), you will need 3k/year....... even at least years production numbers, this number is already exceeded........this year and the next few years, based on the numbers currently studying medicine, between 4k-5k new doctors will start work.....if we take the lower figure of 4k, and 2k stays on in the moh, the number of 15k will be reached by 2017, or earlier if the numbers graduating increases....... you don't turn off a med school like a tap.....they will continue to churn out doctors, and there will not be enough jobs for them.... this scenario is real..... as for the masses coming back from overseas.....the majority will be from russia, which is cheaper than local ipts med schoosl..... .........by 2020 expect local graduates to increase to 3,125....." If half were to go, we have only abt 1,562 ex overseas graduates. |

QUOTE(limeuu @ Oct 6 2010, 02:55 PM) foreign cheaply trained doctors(russia, indonesia, bangladesh, other unrecognised places) will not decrease, unless either the cost goes up significantly, or the gov de-recognise them (like they did for crimea), so expect another 1k-2k/year from out of msia.... With one stroke of the pen, Indonesia can be de-recognised, considering the increasing tensions and the "hardships" created for rich Malaysians who are "maidless" now.Russia, not likely in the near term as we are exploring trade opportunities with them while Bangladesh can be dealt with either way as they need us more than we need them. In the worst case scenario of oversupply, we can "export" our doctors like Myanmar is doing. Not so bleak lah! |
