depends on your med school's method of teaching.. for pbl system you can use:

Anatomy: Gray's (for Students), Snell, Netter..etc
Physiology: Ganong, Guyton, Sherwood
Patho: Robbins basic patho (aka mama patho)
Ana+Physio: Marieb..
biochem: as hyperx stated (lippincott)
Microbio: Lange
Pharmaco: I just use lecture notes....

In the end, suggest u look at the books first and choose which one u feel explains in a manner that u can understand best.

hehe, best thing is ask your future seniors  icon_rolleyes.gif

Embryology- Larson
Physiology- Rhodes and Phlanzers (simpler and nice for 1st year)
Biochem- Lehninger, Stryer

I used anatomedia for anatomy and our lecturer wrote the book and wants us to buy it. But, I won't recommend buying it, Grays is better.

and wikipedia!

Nah...most unis are against wikipedia...but it explains things in a simple manner which is good when you have totally no idea about something.

Are you serious or joking? No one knows how reliable wiki's information is and most of the medical facts there are rather superficial. As medical a student i think you need to know the subject much more in depth.

Btw, can anyone suggest a good book on obstetrics besides Ten Teachers?

The med stuff in wikipedia is usually updated by medical students and even though the facts might not be 100% right, it still provides an idea of a certain concept which is explained easily.

It helps you (at an early level of medical school) to integrate the knowledge you have gained so far. In PBL, you are given a case-a trigger to stimulate you to think of possible hypothesis of a person's situation. Then, you construct different mechanisms for each hypothesis and if you get stuck somewhere or if you don't understand something, you will then need to research the topic, known as a learning issue. PBLs are done in groups to encourage people to communicate and share ideas. You will also need to plan what further information would you get from the patient and what tests would you do to confirm your hypothesis and make a diagnostic.

what u're saying bout wiki are true, but u forgot 1 thing.. it is superficial..and as a medical student, i still think u need to know more than that..
stuffs in medicine are not as simple as that.. and wiki dont provide u with that kind of information.. too much relying on wiki is a big no-no
since u said u also used other sources besides wiki then it is good for you, at least u have that initiative to find the answers somewhere else..

but 1 thing i dont understand about u is..

well, i'm shinyin from the National University of Malaysia / Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM).. based in HUKM, Cheras.. i loved my university, a lot! biggrin.gif

hmm.gif You want the pros and cons on my college?? well, the pros are it's the public university with the highest number of students, meaning you have more friends to share and hang out with.... but it's a little competitive too,.. don't worry, competition to a certain extend is healthy.... and we are very much actively involved in AMSA (Asian Medical Students' Association) with annual conferences in Asian Countries... (you'll be surprised how much popular UKM is compared to UM overseas, no offense, haha!) ..and being a public university, the fees are relatively cheaper ... rclxm9.gif

the cons.. well, you have to go thru form 6 and score that miserable strings of A's and yet that might not guarantee you the place, sometimes, i think, it's just luck, seriously...

and if you are interested in what a medical student life is, you can check out my bLog at: http://confessions-of-a-medical-student.blogspot.com/
nod.gif i have been bloging since my first year of medical life.. so, you can more or less picture what is it like....... do leave a comment/shout-out so i'll know that you've drop by rolleyes.gif

i'm glad i'm in medical school, this is a very interesting yet challenging field... but it is not without it's sacrifices.... wink.gif

wiki is a shortcut for a quick summary...other medical websites are emedicine and american physicians... recommanded textbooks like MRCOG is a wise option.... it's even better to use journals as references.... eg: the british journals, american journals, BJOG, etc... be selective in choosing journals... look at the population sample, methology and how the study was done,... make sure it is valid.... smile.gif

yours sincerely,
shinyin

I had basic clinicals rotation when i first move to clinical years (year 3/sem5)... my first day was depressing... i'll share with you here:
My 1st clinical day
and my the end of first week, i felt this way: End of 1st week
but things got better,... and medical is challenging and yet interesting, fun and meaningful...
i remembered My 1st forensic experience
and my first delivery: Conducting my first delivery.... days like this keeps me going and gives me the reason to carry on....

i hope you'll find your reason too!

yours sincerely,
shinyin
