Good idea notworthy.gif

Better consult a doctor.

But some say minimize intake slowly.

Honestly, smoking is addictive...kinda like a drug addict...no offence.
Takes time.

My bro successfully stopped.
He had a fever as part of the the process.
The body need to 'flush' the nicotin out of the system.

Please use the search function. This topic has been discussed many times, and there are a lot of good info in those old threads.

Smoking is an addiction. No need to sugar coat it.
It is like addiction to drugs or alcohol. Different poison, same problem.

Quitting cold turkey or slowly depends on individual.
Some people quit cold turkey and never smoked again. Some simply tak boleh tahan and never made it.
Some took things easy and quit slowly. But some go into serious withdrawal problems when day reduce 1 ciggie a day.

Nicotine withdrawal symptoms last for only 2 weeks, the rest are psychological.

Read Allen Carr's How to Quit Smoking for better info. smile.gif

hi i have quit smoking before..and started again last march and now i have quit..it has been a week smoke free..the first time i quit, i did it cold turkey..had no withdrawal symptom aftre two years of heavy smoking!
this time after 5 weeks smoking, i starting having symptoms.. i think its the fact that i was eating good food ( i remember i was eaiting alot of tomatoes every daY)..and it cleared nicotine from my blood within days.
its more psychological for me now...i smoked out of sheer boredom (the worst thing to do, when you get bored easilY)

im smoke free 5 days but i get the urge...coz of boredom!!!so i just grab a book or watch a movie.

Added on June 11, 2009, 10:44 ama ciggaret has 4000 chemicals...that are not good. you get vitamin c and b complex deficiency..instead of you feeling good for awhile you will enetually feel low coz of these lack of vitamins.

vitamin C is good for buliding collagen and boosts immune system. B complex gives you good mood releases endorphine to help you manage stress. wihen you smoke you burn vitamin C and b complex so fast that after a day your skin shows the sign of ageing.

your blood will be contaminated with carbon monoxide..too much smoking can literally kill you due to carbon monoxide poisoning. there was a case a young guy of the age 18 smoked 5 boxes in a closed room and died of carbon monoxide poisoning...the boy is atually a brother of a friend of mine.

the urge is from your worst enemy...your brain! nicotine is highyly addictive but it is easiest to clear from your blood. eat lots of red coloured veggies and fruits plus spices like anise seed, liqourice! these fruits and spices are full of beta carotene and other favnoids know to eradicate nicotine within hours and aslo supplies much needed mood enhancers for the brain!
spices you can get from your food eaten at indian restaurant! ask for tomato chutney!

managed to make my bf quit by reducing amount of ciggies very gradually. 2 weeks reduce 1 ciggie, next 2 weeks another one, next month another, till 0 ciggie. took abt half a year, or more. i asked him abt his smoking evyday, if smth went wrong, we talked abt it and if its too soon, add back another ciggie. ur gf shud be ur best motivation i think. gez u wudnt want to harm her with ur smoke, if u love her. hihi.
also, bring ur gf when u hang out wit ur frens. at least during the early stage :-p maybe a supportive partner cud ease the process..

Exactly, support is the most neglected part of quitting.
And it is the most important part of quitting successfully.

Support and praise from family and friends.

I agree.

The hardest part is getting support when you need them and trust me, most smokers wouldn't like their fellow smokers quit smoking. smile.gif

yess. i think the biggest challenge is to refuse and say no when u lepak2 at kedai mamak n ur friends offer u ciggies. then when u say 'i'm quitting' come sarcastic laughs n comments. hahaha. smoking for guys is like bonding... but junxian, if u keep ur determination up, quitting is definitely not an impossible thing to do! best luck and success to u!

I been smoking for 13 years and i just stopped early January this year! No cigs till now...and my secret formula is....

1. Set a date that you are comfortable with and don't force yourself or let anyone influence you. You don't need people to tell you that smoking is bad for health unless you are just born yesterday. Set a realistic date and then just do it at your own will.

2. Smoke as much as you can the last day and then call it quits. Throw the last stick away and say to yourself, "I had enough, I tried before and now I don't need it anymore". Just keep repeating.

3. The first 2 weeks will break u and can make some people go crazy. You will eat a lot, get very tired, easily irritated and just simply feel real down. During this period, just find something to take your mind of smoking. As for me, i took a bottle of wrigley's professional chewing gum everyday to keep my mouth occupied. It also cleans my teeth too.

4. No means no. Don't tell yourself you will take 1 stick today and quit tomorrow because there is always another tomorrow. Give it in and accept it. Be prepared that it's not going to be easy and then face it. Get support from your family and people. If your friend offers you a cigarette, tell them please don't because you are serious about quitting and it's very unethical for them to offer you to smoke.

5. As days go by, you will start to wonder hows the rest of your life will be without cigs. Don't think that far! The secret formula is that always tell yourself. "I just don't want to smoke today" and you will get by much easier.

6. Don't use patches, nicotine gum or anything that have nicotine because it doesn't work. That is simply because these products are gimmicks indirectly backed by cigarettes companies to keep you addicted to nicotine in hope one day you will go back to cigarettes. There is no other alternative besides quitting by your own will.

7. If you really can't stand it and smoked, then don't give up. Tell yourself you will try and not do it again and stop the next day. To make it hard for you, tell your friends and family aloud that "I will not smoke anymore and when a man says something, he will do it or else he is not a man!!" haha..and you will sure try not to smoke..!!

All the best!! thumbup.gif

To some people, the matter of quitting is in their mind. Like me, I smoke whenever I want, I stop whenever I want. Today maybe i smoke a pack of 14s. tomorrow I'd probably quit for the next 2,3 months. then i smoke again. then quit. pusing2 like that. that's how i roll laugh.gif. It is never about the matter of peer pressure, addiction, nicotine and whatnot. however, that's me lah.you maybe different. but if u really want to quit, the first thing u should consider is getting ur mind set correct. Do u really want to quit or....

you cannot quit smoking overnight
just stay calm and determined and reduce your dosage step by step everyday
and one day you will hate smoking

minimise the intake slowly smile.gif

my bf is doing the same too right now. and he really can't stop so suddenly - it will last for like 1-2 days and poof, back to cigs again. i guess smokers can't just stop their intake from like 6-8 batang a day to 0 batang. its like a torture to end the addiction. better lessen the intake slowly smile.gif

managed to make my bf quit by reducing amount of ciggies very gradually.
*
thumbup.gif congrats to u.
this is definitely not an easy task as it takes more than just patience to bring someone out of d ciggie world.
last time i manage to get my bf to not smoke in front of me. I know he'll definitely smoke when he's with his friends.
then soon he manage to reduce the number of ciggies from day to day.
but d habit came back eventually =_="

Added on July 23, 2009, 12:32 amHas anyone tried nicotine gums/patches before?
How effective is it?
& for d gum, does it taste like normal mint gum? or?

I'm just curious biggrin.gif
but if it helps, I'll consider recommending to my bf.
I really want him to stop smoking desperately.
No matter what others say how smoking can help release stress etc., that's all rubbish to me.
I only know it's bad for health & bad to others as well.

let's hear them comments/experience on the gum & patches.

hey bro well i am an ex smoker still young tho but i quit because i wanted too. I feel much better now.
My experience is to first to stop all the chiggy's that i like. For an example right after food, right after i wake up. After i have accomplished that i moved on to generally quitting. Quitting to me is a sudden gesture. I just let go. For a few months. Yes its hard but you need will power. Being active in sports helped me. then one day i bought a stick from a mamak shop to test my addiction. To my surprise i did not feel like smoking it more than half the but. smile.gif

if you are a malay, then fast.

i did it during fasting month. First i reduced my stick per day. Then i limited 1 stick per day. Then i gradually increase the limit (eg 1 stick per week.. etc) until i forgot.

Of course, i changed my friends to non smokers. That helps very much. I moved out and hang out with my ol good friends who doesn't smoke and left my smokers friend all out.

If you are a non muslim, you can fast too. You know the reaction of people when they come to you and say hey neato let's smoke, and then you smiled and say sorry i am fasting.

Even though you're not fasting, you can always tell them you are, because you're fasting from smoking! laugh.gif

Hi guys, I'm in the midst of quitting smoking now too. Its been 32 hours since my last cig. I hope this works out, I use to be a 20-22 stick a day person.

Any ideas on how to help take the edge off? I don't want to use nicotine gum, inhaler or patch.

Now that you got your mind SET, it's a matter of your phychology strength to keep it up.

Can I ask you a question : Do you still have friends who you think WILL invite you to smoke again? (eg. hey farkin, wanna go for a smoke?).

Oh, and do you still hang out with smokers?

Now would be the best time to sit down and ponder... What's so good about smoking? Think of the thick disgusting smoke that's not only smelly but causes tar buildups inside you.. not good rite? So what's the point of smoking? Better quit.

stay close to people who want you to stop smoking! That is your best friend for now!

I have stopped smoking for 9 days. Let's keep it up! thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

Yeah, i still hang with smokers but these are my best friends whom I've known for years. Oh btw, can you tell me how you avoid that feeling of wanting to inhale smoke? Thats the biggest craving I have now.

Today being the 3rd day is still difficult but I think its working.... i hope....

keep it up. i think the main challenge is when your friend offer you a smoke or wants u to smoke with them. for me nowdays i just say no, and it's rather an impolite NO. why? because i tried doing that politely before but they just didnt take that seriously enough and i ended up smoking again. For me i just showed them that I am serious and it is not rude to be impolite as you are refusing something which is not good.

let's keep it up! gambate! laugh.gif

sorry didnt realize your post. i had that too last time. What i will do is drink when i think about the feeling to inhale smoke. If I'm outside i will immediately buy a bottle of soya bean or something refreshing.

I know its hard for u to immediately stop after being a hardcore smoker for so long. for me i did it gradually and when i want to smoke, i'll buy the baddest taste cigi i could find (used to go with benson, every time i smoke i will feel like vomiting).

but yes of course? if you want to immediately stop, you should not do that and think of another alternatives. maybe the others can help perhaps?

Hi everyone, my last cigarette was in November 2008.

To be honest, its all in your mind. I got mind f**ked by reading Star health spread on Sundays every week. Continuosly reading about the good health you can have if you are a non-smoker, compared to the bad effects of smoking. Nonsense excuses like 'non-smokers also die from second-hand smoke' or 'we die anyway' or 'anyone can get cancer' are just nothing but EXCUSES.

I started smoking when I was 18 til last year, which is 7 years+. It was a one day 'effort' because the night before I quit, I had a yam cha session and I chained smoked close to a pack in that 2 hour yam cha session. The feeling I got after when I was driving home was seriously sickening. Which, in result got me to thinking what the hell am I doing to myself.

The ultimate question for myself was, 'What have I benefited from smoking and what have I gained?'

I smoked my last stick in that Starbucks and never looked back. What followed in the months. Yes, MONTHS, was withdrawal symptoms which included cough, flu, headaches, mucus and phlegm which was thick and green. Easily the worst 3 months in my life.

Now I can say I'm proud of myself. I can also say I will definitely NOT take up smoking again. Simply because I don't want to go through that 3 months of suffering ever again!

Majority of my friends smoke, but friends who smoke is not an excuse that you can't quit. You can quit if you want to quit. Wanting to quit is definitely better than needing to quit.

Good story Kelvin.

You know what. I used to stop smoking once. And it lasted me for 5 years.

Then I started smoking back again because of stress (this year). And now on my 10th day run to quit for good.

When i started back, the first week, i was feeling dizzy and sick, and few months after that my whole body seemed fatigue and short breath. Tired and all sort of bad stuffs. That's what happen when you stop and try to start back up again.

And cigi does not taste good. So i thought to myself what the heck am i doin starting off again with this shit?

You just need to brainwash yourself to not smoke. And you DO know and ADMIT (deep inside your heart) that it is BAD sweat.gif

i just wasted my whole 5 years due to my stupid act.

Doesn't work. The guys at hot.fm got some callers to call, most of them says they just ignored it. Chinaman making big profit now because selling those aluminium cigi holder (they even hike the price up due to the grossy pictures!)

Anyway, all those who wants to stop smoking should visit this thread often and report or share their story for motivations.

So many inspiring stories, good to see people are taking serious steps in curbing the addiction to cigarettes rclxms.gif

I was one time a smoker too, used to smoke the Dunhill small pack of 14s a box per day, it came to such a chronic stage that i was barely able to breath when i was climbing the flight of stair leading up to my apartments which was on the 2nd floor! had a alot to reflect that day on why im smoking, took on the challenge went cold turkey, yeap just bought a box of 14's smoked all out and went cold,

Pretty bad withdrawal symptoms, running nose, flu, cough, and i realised i got more hungrier after i quit smoking? i guess its true that smoking does supress hunger, ate alot of food and ice-cream before i knew it, i was at 90kgs! when previously i was 78! and that was like 4 years back, still hang out with friends who smoke but never even thought once of picking up a stick to smoke.

Relax bro, it's all in your mind only. It's only that urge to start smoking again. Go hang out with someone that doesn't smoke, do something to keep you out of it - yes you can do it! rclxms.gif

Hey Triple02, good to have you here too. How long had you stopped smoking?

Oh my withdrawal symptoms this time.. when i want to sleep.. i can feel like i'm not breathing.. was like scared shit man.. sometimes i wonder if my heart still strong as before or not, and i'm not even 30 yet! So guys - this smoking business needs to stop. Although if you smoke you will somehow feel awake (then dizzy a bit if you're not used) and you will think somewhat it will regenerate yourself, it's actually vice versa. there's nothing good - unless you want to do the filthy business of selling it.

Please motivate me more, and the others.. i can see the light on this thread thumbup.gif

i just discovered the best way to quit smoking, and its light on ur wallet as well 8D

first step: find a smoking buddy, someone who doesnt mind sharing his cigs with you.
second step: cut down till you need to smoke about 2-3 cigs a day
third step: stop smoking completely and bum cigs of your friend XD
fourth step: eventually you'd smoke only when you hang out with him.(limit yourself to only one cig, of course, bumming etiquette states that you cant take to many cigs from said bum buddy)
fifth: reduce the number of times you hang out with said buddy per week
sixth: dont meet him for a week. and from then on hopefully you'd have the willpower to not smoke.

satsugai, that method WILL work. And yes most of my colleagues at office did that - now those who have cigs will usually keep quiet if not they will risk of losing more $$$ hahaha..

Here's a cool windows mobile freeware to share http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-downlo...ke-tracker.html

You can just go ahead and say to your friend "I'm quitting, so please don't offer me any cigs anymore"

Unless you still want to be 'buddy' with a person who try to kill you everytime you're with him

"Hey buddy, let's have smoke, no worries, it's on me"

Then yes, please kill yourself the expensive way.

nice pic... hehe.. anyways... heres some sharing...

i managed to stopped smoking after 7 years of smoking.. started smoking since primary 6.. cigg was dirt cheap those day.. RM1.70 for 7s.. average smoke 2-3 20s pack per day for 6 years.. can say im an addict.. hehe..

but i managed to stop. what i did was:
1. Determination. Strong will power can get you quite far. my strong will help me stopped for 3-4 weeks.. Then i really couldnt take it anymore..
2. When will power fails, i went for a holiday, to a place far from cigg with fresh air.. and with help of sweets n candy.. whenever feel like smoking then go suck some sweets.
3. Money.. i calculated how much money im gonna spend if i continue to smoke for another 1-2 year.. surprisingly you'll get shock for the amount of money spent..
4. Good companions.. Hang out with bunch of friends who doesnt smoke helps alot.. especially girls who hate smokers..

hey guys,
i'm proud to say i've already stopped smoking for 2 weeks and been smoking for 7 years or so. I believe that the will to quit (it's not that difficult) actually is the most important. If you stick to a decision do it. That's all
I was on a pack a day, and the reason i started was peer pressure. Now, slowly try to erase that perception that smoking is cool and whatnot, and wahla. I bought the patch by nicorette, and the treatment to stop smoking last a month-2 months. I managed mine in 5 days with the patch, and now i've been patchless, and not looking back to smoking ever again. You guys can do it!

QUOTE(boonies @ Jun 15 2009, 12:19 AM)

All the best!! thumbup.gif

Reading through all the posts here, I guess to stop smoking, you need to have a STRONG WILL. Nothing else matters if you still THINK that you NEED to smoke and your dirty hands kept on holding to that ciggie!

I'm not posting this to tell all of you guys that I've QUIT SMOKING but to share with all that I'm experiencing a lot of health problems which I can directly relate to the effects of smoking. High Blood Pressure, high Pulse Rate, chest pain, difficulty to breathe and so on....

These outcomes has made me to consider to quit smoking as I fear that I would make my health condition worst. I've been a smoker for like 13 years now....

Expecting to gradually reduce my daily ciggy consumption....Hope that everything will turn out good...

WISH ME ALL THE LUCK Guys.....

I hear try to keep yourself busy instead of eating snake helps divert your concentration.

depends on individual la the addiction. some people i know dont smoke regularly and dont buy smokes. but they smoke when they go to parties and ppl offer them..somtimes up to 3 or 4 sticks per party. but they not addicted. my friend recently quit smoking after so many years because he got really sick (like h1n1 symptoms). still get tempted when he goes out but i tell him to get over it lol

hi. don't waste time. just quit it right away. and of cause you will feel very disturbed without consuming them. but it will only last for a few days to weeks. well if you're determined why not. afterall, nobody favor a drug addict unless they are not thinking of their love ones. Go watch sad cases of people suffering from cancer at youttube. hope this info helps. no offense in any ways smile.gif

Just to share with you all about quit smoking.
I just quit smoking for the past few months ago.
before this, i have been a smoker for the past 10+ yrs (started when I'm 17).

i found the best effective way to stop smoking is by using the "cold turkey" methods. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_turkey

when i first start with this methods, i do feel the withdrawal effect and it really makes me want to buy cigarette. with the strong support from my gf and my own determination, the addiction start to get lesser and lesser as the days gone.

the first 3 days, the effect is damn strong and if you are able to survive it, you are sure to be able to beat it. whenever you feel like smoking, try to find something to eat. I keep on making myself busy with eating sweets/food/etc. I also make myself busy with other activity like going out shopping/etc with my gf.

Cold turkey methods can be hard as it requires the most determination.

According to research, idk where i read it.
For guys, it's better to use nicotine patch to slowly stop smoking.
For girls, use nicotine-free cigarettes.

Nicotine patch is for guys because guys like the after-effects of smoking, In short, the like the effects of the nicotine. hence, the patch would work better.

on the other hand, nicotine-free cigarettes are for girls because girls like the sensation of smoke going down their throat (girls do not smoke for the effects of nicotine). nicotine-free cigarettes do less harm to human body.

But if able to, just cut down on smoking progressively. going cold-turkey is hard for long-term smokers.

I don't know about the actual situations though. Just posting based on reading. smile.gif

I read somewhere, keeping a mint in your mouth also keeps you away from smoking. Hope you give up on smoking asap! biggrin.gif

it's mental power sweat.gif

anyway, here's my take on quitting smoking: it depends on how much of a smoker are you. In Australia for example, there's a guideline on when a nicotine product is required or not. if you are a light smoker, then it is quite possible for you to quit based on mental power and maybe family motivation alone. getting married, having kids, found a new gf who doesnt like smoker is a good motivational factor that is found to be working.

if you are heavy smoker on the other hand, the usage of nicotine patches might be needed. Most of the time it is assisted therapy as well, as to keep track on the smoker's progress (number of ciggies smoked a day, total dose of nicotine needed a day etc). usually pharmacists will be dealing with this, to ensure a successful therapy. Those who is serious in quitting (and i highly recommend to do so), i suggest visiting a health professional to get a good regime, and not just simply purchasing nicotine patches without any aim.

According to research, idk where i read it.
For guys, it's better to use nicotine patch to slowly stop smoking.
For girls, use nicotine-free cigarettes.

Nicotine patch is for guys because guys like the after-effects of smoking, In short, the like the effects of the nicotine. hence, the patch would work better.

on the other hand, nicotine-free cigarettes are for girls because girls like the sensation of smoke going down their throat (girls do not smoke for the effects of nicotine). nicotine-free cigarettes do less harm to human body.

whatever research that is, throw it away. nicotine is a chemical that makes you addicted to something and in this case, smoking. be it men or women, addiction to smoking is basically because addicted to nicotine and not to smoking itself. It is other substances in cigarettes that is harmful. If nicotine is harmful, why do we have nicotine patches? nicotine products are used to assist in smoking withdrawal by eliminating the bad substances within the ciggies, yet doesnt remove the nicotines from the smoker's body because abrupt cessation means withdrawal symptoms. of course, nicotine patches is not meant to be taken for life and as such, gradual reduction of amount over a period of time is usually the way to go. Hence, my suggestion on a regime from doctor/pharmacist as i mentioned above.

Try Champix from Pfizer. Its a twice-daily medication in tablet form, to be taken for at least 12 weeks (research has shown that the highest chance for relapse is at the 12th week). You can get it at your nearest GP / quit-smoking clinics smile.gif

P/s: Its 4 times more effective that quitting cold turkey.

*
Was a smoker for 15 years and tried quitting cold turkey too..The process took like 2 years with relapses due to the strong withdrawal symptoms...
The I came across the softlaser therapy for smoking withdrawal while I was in Germany. It is based on the auricular therapy but I was skeptical. As it was only a 45 minute procedure, I took it and surprisingly it works for me...No cravings for ciggy and withdrawal symptoms. I think they have a center here in Subang Jaya with the website facilitas.my. Give it a try and share yr experience.

it's all about willpower, try to set a target like im not gonna smoke for 1 week, it's hard but once u've gone through the toughest period, u'll feel less suffered.
you can also ask ur friends to give you motivation and encouragement to go on with the quit-smoking-process.

Very important also is that once you have gotten the nictotine out of the system the 1st week, DONT ever smoke another one, not a single puff!! That was my downfall earlier with my cold turkey method which caused the relapses...So far after the laser therapy, it is working like a charm for me with no cravings and withdrawal symptoms so far! biggrin.gif

I'm touched to see smokers who are comitted to quit and get help/advise they deserve from others in this thread.Such a great place to share something healthy.Bravo!
I personally believe mental power has the main role in making such changes/commitments as I too, have made commitments. But it takes more than just efforts. Here,I will emphasize more on mental powers:

1.Goal.Set a Goal.Don't skip this part as commitments without a goal is like sailing in a sea without navigator. So,set it right.Write it down in a diary/Sticky notes and put it somewhere you can see.Someone who's supportive will always support you instead of making fun of your goal.
Going cold turkey is not advisable as it has a short term effect on someone who is new in quitting.

2.Motivation.Put your daily progress in a diary. It will keep track on how you well you disciplined yourself and helps a lot in motivation.

3.Power of Delay.EACH time you feel like you want to smoke, Find something to do that can keeps you off from smoking. It could be anything from working out, eating healthy foods,or getting involved in something you pleasure to do...And make a promise to yourself,
No matter how bad you want to smoke, how CRAZY the temptation that you think you will DIE from it,DON'T GIVE IN.
Do something else instead and delay the NEEDS to smoke.By this way, you'll not only become closer to your goal,it will also makes you feel STRONG flex.gif each time you resist it.

4.Supports.Get supports from your family or anyone that Do CARE about you.Stop hanging out with smoker friends as they will tend to 'seduce' and ruin your goal. It's a bit dramatic,But that's the fact.

5.Say NO.Say it confidently to someone who offers you a cigar.Be proud of your new goal. You have nothing to lose when you start to quit smoking. It is much cooler too.

6.LOVE.Love yourself. It's a very simple thing that most people ignore.Give yourself and your body the right to Heal itself.

7.Step UP.There will be times that you will fail or cheating on yourself by making excuses to smoke. But remember this,it is much much HARDER to get back on track once you start being dishonest with yourself/goals.Sometimes it's ok to fail, but DO Get up and fight back.

Cheers~

I was a smoker since teenage and now im near to 40. i quitted smoking for past 3 years and never feel like to smoking again anymore. It was very difficult situation at that time.
Normally i considered myself was a heavy smoker. 1 - 2 packs per-day.Will be more when clubbing.I was tried tonnes of time to stop it but unsuccesful because i just "say only" until i knew my medical report that was scared me.From then, i started to quite seriously. If you do not have reason, you wont do it properly.

1st and the only rule is Do not buy Cigarette. ( save your money and health ).
Happy quitting and All the best

I have to say self determination must be very strong and friend's influence must be there as well.

I, too was a smoker when I was in college. Also at least a pack a day and more during clubbing days.

When I moved out to study in uni, I mixed with a bunch of nice guys that loves sports and being myself always wanting to be competitive, I managed to stopped smoking and I could see the difference in stamina and performance. I managed to stop for at least 5 years.

But sad thing is, now that I'm in the industry, I'm picking it up again but I have to say its mainly for social reasons. At least I never buy anymore.

Another motivation you can use to help quit smoking:-

Think about how much money $$ you are saving each time you don't smoke. Save it and reward yourself using the money saved (holiday ka, or gifts, etc. la; but obviously don't reward by smoking can dy la)

Good luck!

managed to make my bf quit by reducing amount of ciggies very gradually. 2 weeks reduce 1 ciggie, next 2 weeks another one, next month another, till 0 ciggie. took abt half a year, or more. i asked him abt his smoking evyday, if smth went wrong, we talked abt it and if its too soon, add back another ciggie. ur gf shud be ur best motivation i think. gez u wudnt want to harm her with ur smoke, if u love her. hihi.
also, bring ur gf when u hang out wit ur frens. at least during the early stage :-p maybe a supportive partner cud ease the process..

make statement like that
GF : If you smoke cig, I wont smoke your " cig ".
BF : ok ok you win, i let you smoke ok?
GF : smoke like a bawse.

Here's some on my part..

so u want to quit smoking but don't know when to start or when to choose a date..
1.When you're sick, with all the coughing and sore throat u'll want to stop
2.Next have your mind set ready for the change.
3.Know that u'll be suffering from withdrawal symptom.2weeks-3weeks deal with it.
4.Chewing gum, Chips, anything that can keep your mouth busy, candy, lollipop.keep em around you they are your friend..MAKE SURE THERE IS SOME AROUND YOU 24 HOUR
5.You'll gain weight deal with it.
6.Exercise now's a good time, take up running.
7.Your smoking friend can be your friend or enemy in this matter.
8.Going out this is the problem.you can either overcome it or you can just FAIL.
9.If you fail just keep in mind you have a weak mind..

failure is not an option. there's no sugar coating it. if you want to quit you quit.cause I've been there and done that. 20's per day that's 300++per month..i'm a student that's a lot of money..

nicotine patch, electric cigarette, nicotine gum..tried the cig n gum..taste like cilli, the gum couldn't kept it in my mouth for 15 min..cig is okay..but you're giving up on smoking and taking up something else entirely keep that in mind..if you're richfag go for it go..waste you money..

in the end its up to you..no words or advice or magical incantation or marketing product is going to help you..its just you, yourself, so deal with it..this may sound harsh but its the fact.

It's not easy but it is not impossible either.
Remind yourself constantly why you want to quit and all the benefits you would get. If you have kids dude you should quit ASAP. never stop abruptly since withdrawal symptoms can get bad.

And also take note that there are medications to help you quit smoking.

different people, different body type, different method, you just need to listen to your body, try everything and list it all up, what do you think work and what's not. Listen, to, your, body.

I'm not smoking but here are some tips i found on the internet. Hope this would help you smile.gif

-Stay active: Keep yourself distracted and occupied, go for walks.
-Keep your hands/fingers busy: Squeeze balls, pencils, or paper clips are good substitutes to satisfy that need for tactile stimulation.
-Keep your mind busy: Read a book or magazine, listen to some music you love.
-Find an oral substitute: Keep other things around to pop in your mouth when you’re craving a cigarette.
-Good choices include mints, hard candy, carrot or celery sticks, gum, and sunflower seeds.
-Drink lots of water: Flushing toxins from your body minimizes withdrawal symptoms and helps cravings pass faster.

8 years ++ clean, its 100% of a mental barrier rather than physical.

I used to tell myself these lame excuses

1. My friends smoke so must I to look cool in their eyes - BULL

2. Work got so much pressure so I must smoke to THINK - BULL

3. After eating a good lunch/dinner I must smoke as it feels good, if not something is missing - BULL

4. Buying cigarettes helps to pay taxes to the government so as to collect enough tax to keep Malaysia economy growing - LAGI LAGI BULL

5. I'm too free and fingers are itchy, must grab something to cure the itch - LAMEST BULL

At first i reduce from 1 x 20 pkt a day to smaller, then smallest and completely stop in a week AFTER my friend had THROAT CANCER! I think that's the biggest mental motivator why I quit smoking.

You can help him by giving him some incentive/motivation. Like if he smokes, yes his throat may not be dry, but NO SEX FOR A MONTH!

Surely he'll quit in record time

To be honest if you are serious of quitting smoking, JUST QUIT and STOP finding EXCUSES to reduce the smoking. Sorry this may sound blunt, but "cz i heard frm sources tat ur body are used to the nicotine" is just an EXCUSE not to stop smoking.

If I offend you notworthy.gif notworthy.gif notworthy.gif sorry ya, no intention of doing that. Just wanna help u quit smoking like me.

Hey,

anyone successfully quit smoking here ?

I'm trying to quit smoking, i switched to vaping, i am using the liquid type e-ciggy, to see if i can stop craving for the real cigarette, and hopefully i can stop everything by then.

Eventho the e-ciggy contain nicotine (14-24mg), it's still not the real thing, i have to keep smoking it to get the "kick" into my body..

Current week is the 3rd week, i am suffering man.. throat feel itchy, cough with phlegm, flu, tired, sleepy, ulcer in mouth, i did some research online, these are all normal symptom of quitting smoking..

Sigh.. hope i wont give up soon .. laugh.gif

That day i went to Watson and i saw NiQuitin, its a patch to stick on smoker's body, it does supply nicotine to the body, to stop us from craving for cigarette or food.. wonder if it really works.. anyone tried that before ?

I quit cold turkey last two years and without any external/medicinal help. smile.gif

Anyway, I don't really feel anything bad during the first 2 weeks. It seems different people react differently.

As mention nate_nightroad, It does feel good after you stop. My food taste better, my sense of smell getting better.
Now, I can't even withstand others smoking around me laugh.gif
It really stink except for the kretek and cigar smell. tongue.gif

And you had to have good friends too.
Even though, half of my friends are smoker, they respect my decision when they saw me seriously quitting.

Well, good luck to you. rclxms.gif

Bro fist to you too! biggrin.gif

Yep totally agree.

----

I forgot, to share other tips. I believe the most important is to keep your zeal to stop smoking.

I used to stop smoking for a week several time, but I kept on buying when I went to shopping and started to smoke again.
I realised the difference between that time and when I really quit.
I kept on reminding myself that; If I gave up, then it is the end of it.
And reminded myself that I had quit for a week, it would waste of afford if I started to smoke again. I was repeating that every day for three weeks.
Then, when you sense of smell getting better, it will increase your motivation to quit because of the stink of the cigarette smoke.

That was my experience. I would be glad if it could help anyone out there. smile.gif

I'd been smoking heavily for 10 years (otherwise 16).  blush.gif

It really stink except for the kretek and cigar smell.  tongue.gif

From my personal experience quitting smoking is simply a matter of willpower. I smoked for about 20 years and quit a few times in that period until I finally quit for good around March this year.

Its a simple equation - do you want to quit smoking more than you want to continue smoking? If you can honestly say yes then quitting is easy. If no, then you won't quit. Simple as that.

You can ask around for tips from ex smoker and most successful one are the cold turkey quitter.

I was a 15 years smoker. Average 2 pack a day. Havent smoked for 1 1/2 years. Method of quitting : cold turkey.

I believe it takes 3 week to make or break a habit. Try to survive the 3 weeks and it will be much easier after that.

15 or so years here. Quit in January this year. Forgive me if this turns out long but I find the following helps :-
  1. Get a cheerleader. Somebody who tells you that you are doing great and they are proud of you. Also this is the person to talk to when things get tough. This really helps on moments when you are down.
  2. Stop the drinks. Nights out is a bad idea with all the other smokers around you. There is no specific time you can go back, its really up to you but if you do go out when not ready, its going to be tough. This might even include mamak sessions and simple gatherings.
  3. Get a counter. Tracking your progress gives you a sense of pride and/or purpose. You need to know how well you've done and how you don't want to throw it all away. I use reddit's badgebot.
  4. Hit the gym (or bag). Breathing is an integral part of focusing and controlling urges. Exercise (or in my case boxing) is an EXTREMELY good way to control breathing. Also the dopamine release from hard exercise makes you forget about other things for a while.
  5. Trouble in threes. The first 3 days are immediate chemical withdrawal. This sucks bad. After 3 weeks of not smoking, the psychological withdrawal starts. It is constant and probably the most difficult (remember your cheerleader, this is where he/she will help). After 3 months, the brain gets subtle. Things are less "I WANT IT NOW!!", more "this would be nice with one". Its extremely tiring to catch but slightly better. I'll tell you more when I reach 3 years wink.gif

Don't get discouraged. Just push on. You can do it because you aren't worse of than anybody else. In fact you are stronger than those who have never quit because they don't know the pain. The struggle. You can do it.

A doctor once told me that many smokers who are diagnosed with those serious illness or terminal cancer are capable to stop their habit immediately. YES, immediately! But of course, there are still some who don't bother to stop.

So, it's all in your willpower to stop.

The nicotine patch is suppose to help ease the withdrawal symptoms. Your body had been taking in so much nicotine in the past. Sudden stop will make your body having all the withdrawal sx. U dont hv to stop on your own. U can go to your nearest klinik kesihatan and ask for help cos most of the KK will have klinik berhenti merokok. They have nicotine patch, pill, chewing gums to help u. It will be very expensive if u buy from shops.

U have a good goal there. All the best to u and your health!

Actually it is easy to stop smoking. No matter how heavy one smokes, once doctor gave the final ultimatum that either you smoke or you die, he/she automatically success in quitting smoking without the need to cut down gradually la, exercise la, nicotine gum la, etc. just stop like that like a car hitting a tree.

It means if your mental is strong, then it is very easy to quit

I quit smoking for 2 years already. For me, the most difficult thing is when smoking become your habit, especially you will have one right after you had your meal, it is very UNCOMFORTABLE when we stop doing it. Seriously, sometimes I just feel like many tiny ants are running underneath my skin, begging for the nicotine. Luckily I found the way to reduce the uncomfortable feeling, I keep drinking cold water when I want to smoke, it makes me feel better, you can try this too... smile.gif

I can personally vouch for this since it occurred to my mom once her doctor broke to her that she got cancer. Kinda funny how my years of pestering amounted to nothing but a bad news was all it took to get her to stop.

i tried quit smoking many times but the longest i can hold was 1month only. i went to klinik kesihatan for smoker purpose and also get nicotine pil from farmasi but that' all just temporary until i get back to smoke again... like 1 box perday.
Right now im using e-chigar, very popular these day until goverment notice and said it' dangerous. (i believe they scared of no income from ciggarte if all smoker turns to e-chigar). I also combine with nicotine pil. It is very hard to quit and hopefully i can quit someday.

Hey that's a lot man. We should drink 2 liter of water instead smile.gif You know our stomach. Trivia: Stomach won't absorb any nutrient. It only breaks down food. But it will absorb toxin. You know what toxin?

Toxin ie alcohol can damage our kidney and liver which filter and detox toxin. And liver is a silent organ. It won't give you any 'pain' alert when it has problem because liver does not have ending nerve. So, when we realize it, it could be very late to save the liver.

Occasional smoking will only lead to regular smoking sooner or later. Decision making and determination and motivation to keep it up can help. Community and support also play a big role. nod.gif

I've finally quite smoking for almost 2 years now. Even tried e-cig for 3 months prior to that but unsuccessful. Now, I'm free. No more.

I think the main reason why we mostly fail is when we got back to our old habits. For me, it's sitting in open air eateries e.g mamak etc. I tried quitting few years back but went back when I can't refrain myself to light another after my meal. Even if I don't have cigarettes with me, I will buy a pack immediately.

faiz293: It's sort of easy this time round coz I'm prepared and it was New Year 2013 then. So, a lot of motivational push I guess.

CKKwan: Did not put on weight, in fact went down a little. Didn't really stuff myself after quit. Also, I'm on some supplements which helps I guess.

Ryurox2020: It's easy to list out here bro, but it takes determination as well.

1. Tell yourself u need to quit and be firm - for watever reason (kids, health, financial etc)
2. Don't mix around with smoking buddies for at least 6 months (depending on individuals)
3. Cut down mamak or open air dining (smoke zones) as much as possible
4. Don't touch ecig
5. Lastly, but the most effective but a little insane.. get yourself sick every couple of months for 1 year - best is cough. Bad cough.

durfzstonez: Actually it all comes from yourself. Quit smoking is like slim down to those obese. You need to know why you want to do it, not how.

it's your hormone that's making you feel 'lost'. it will go away if you can persist for a few more months. yes, a few more months.

im smoke free now for 5 years 5 months and 11 days

The only thing that kept me free was thinking what would I be giving up if I took just one puff... my health and a shorter lifetime, rm400 a month which is almost my car payment (so my far now foc only), and a lifetime addiction after that.

This has so far kept me away

Cigarette is damn expensive right now in Malaysia. One pack a day will cost about RM510 per month; that amount of money can pay for a car instalment already.

1 pack of cigarette cost same as 5 kg rice .

5kg rice enough for one person per month .

Smoking 1 pack of cigarette per day is like pouring 5 kg rice in longkang .

You may consider clinical hypnotherapy to quit smoking.

Hypnosis is defined as an altered state of awareness in which you appear to be asleep or in a trance. Clinical hypnosis may be used to treat certain physical or psychological problems. For instance, it is frequently used to help patients control pain. It is also used in a wide range of other conditions such as weight issues, speech disorders, and addiction problems.

There is debate about how hypnosis works. Some people believe that when you are hypnotized, you relax and concentrate more, and are more willing to listen to suggestions -- such as giving up smoking, for example.

Even though you appear to be in a trance during hypnosis, you are not unconscious. You are still aware of your surroundings, and -- despite what many stage performers may claim during an entertaining show -- you cannot be made do to anything against your will. In fact, brain tests performed on patients during hypnotism sessions have shown a high level of neurological activity.

Hypnosis for Smokers
During hypnosis for smoking cessation, a patient is often asked to imagine unpleasant outcomes from smoking. For example, the hypnotherapist might suggest that cigarette smoke smells like truck exhaust, or that smoking will leave the patient's mouth feeling extremely parched.

Spiegel's method is one popular smoking cessation hypnosis technique that focuses on three main ideas:

-Smoking poisons the body
-You need your body to live
-You should respect your body and protect it (to the extent you'd like to live)

The licensed clinical hypnotherapist teaches the smoker self-hypnosis, and then asks him or her to repeat these affirmations anytime the desire to smoke occurs.

How to Find a Hypnotherapist
If you want to try hypnosis to help you quit smoking, ask your health care provider to recommend a good hypnotherapist.

Here are some tips when looking for a qualified hypnotherapist:
Make sure they are licensed, trained, and credentialed. Hypnosis for smoking cessation and other medical or behavioral reasons should only be done by someone who has a current license in a health care field, such as medicine, psychiatry, psychology, or nursing.
Ask some tough questions. Ask about their professional training.
*P/S:
Professional governing body for licensed hypnothrapist in Malaysia: The Association of Hypnotherapy Practitioners, Malaysia (AHPM)-
The Traditional and Complementary Medicine Act (Act 756) sets the minimum competence level for the credentialing of a professional Mind Body Soul Therapy practitioner in Malaysia. AHPM is a member of The Federation of Complementary and Natural Medical Associations, Malaysia (FCNMAM). FCNMAM is under the jurisdiction of the Department of Traditional and Complementary Medicine, Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysia.

Remember, it's never too late to quit smoking. Doing so has immediate health benefits. And, if you quit smoking before you turn 50, you'll cut the risk of dying in the next 15 years in half, compared to those who keep lighting up.

There are some binaural beats using brainwave technology which may help to stop smoking.

So far, I try to reduce below 5 cigarrettes per day. On weekend, I can go smoke free.
Sugar free gums/candy does really help in reducing smoking.
I hope, I can stop smoking soon.

Gums are useful, but still contain some amount of nicotine but at a smaller scale...
Goodluck to you...I was sceptical about the usefullness of gums, since a doctor (who smoke)...
He says all the gums and nicotine patch is rubbish...
And he continues smoking...I think it may work on you...but not the doctor... blush.gif

But, at least you have tried although you failed...
Some people have no intention at all to quit smoking...
The increase in cigarratte price does have a positive impact on me in reducing the craving...
HACKS candy works very well for me in helping to curb my cravings...

I suggest brushing teeth regularly(3 times per day)...the mint flavor does help to reduce the cravings for cigarrete...

Smoking is addictive due to it contains tobacco...
I recommend to reduce the tobacco consumption...
Try to lower consumption of tobacco...

Good habit is to drink a glass of water once you are craving for cigarrete...
Need to have a good diet as well to maintain weight and prevent obesity...

best is to have a great causing for quiting, i.e for wife/gf/child
Or just simply because for health reasons. Alot of people when they have great desire, they tend to quit all the bad habits. nod.gif

I used to be a heavy smoker. Niquitin gum helped me out to quit. Now it's been 4 years since my last puff.

Note: fyi those who never tried niquitin gum. You will feel like wanna puke when chew niquitin gum but it did help me to reduce my smoking craving till I quit completely.

i tried quitting for 3 months
withdrawal symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and the urge to smoke
i slept it off for the next few days.

also, the main thing to quit is commitment and avoid smoking areas and temptation when you see other ppl smoke. substitution can help such as chewing a gum when u wana smoke. i tried nicotine patches and nicotine gum, it dont work for sh!t.

Free from smoking for 4 weeks now... after more than 20 years.
I switched to cigars because I find it is less addictive than cigarettes. Took several attempts but finally the last one took me a year and two months to finally stop. Now I even enjoy coffee without any cravings.

Someone uploaded it years ago in this forum that helps me to understand the psychological nicotine addiction. Thanks a million. smile.gif

Part of the quitting process involves in understanding nicotine addiction.
Plenty of good sources here: WhyQuit.com

Wow, Alfie Allen is also in that video (The Teenage Guy who coughs after his first cig)! If anyone watches Game of Thrones, you will know who he is.

Anyway I've been an ex-smoker for a year already while still maintaining. Been a smoker for around 3 short years but still I guess the quitting process is the same no matter how "veteran" of a smoker you are.

Gotta say though, quitting cold turkey was a godawful experience as I do not really know how to cope with the stress at that moment and also gained more than 10kgs in the process. cry.gif

My opinion is no. If you quit smoking then your body fitness will grow up for sure. Now a days lot's of ways of quit smoking you know like- vaping, e-cigarettes, e-juice and so on. You can try one of them as an alternative ways of smoking. If you would like to know more you can try here: https://www.blacknote.com/

Hope this will help you to quit smoking. Thanks!!!

About this, I've heard from my friend who plan to quit after smoke for like 3 or 4 years already. He quit for many times via cold turkey but doesnt work, ended up holding ciggi again. He went to this new open centre in PJ and surprisingly, he quit it after 1 session of laser treatment. So far from what he told me, he dont have any withdrawal symptom because the centre actually help in giving advice on how to reduce withdrawal symptom. Can google about it if needed. Hope it helps. smile.gif

Stop smoking and avoid smoking environments is the fundamental for good lungs, heart and ur body. I'm working in the hospital and seeing a lot of patients suffering due to smoking either cigarette, vaping or cigar. More than 50% of patients in the ICU and CCU having heart and lung problems are smokers. U may be the lucky one who haven't pronounce any health problems now, but may coz others problems in ur future. If u love ur self and ur family members, stop smoking.
Trust me, I'm a physiotherapist.

Everywhere you look, everyone is smoking. The world is suffering from a serious addiction and people don't know it. We have to take steps to discourage this addiction. The countries need to stop selling cigarettes openly. The shops should be fined/closed for selling cigarettes to students.

To get spurred, you require an intense, individual motivation to stop, it might be to shield your family from used smoke, or lower your possibility of getting lung growth, coronary illness, or different conditions, or to look and feel more youthful, pick a reason that is solid enough to exceed the desire to light up....

With the new policy of restricting smokers from smoking in restaurants and the increased prices recently, I think many people will be persuaded to quit now. Good luck!

provided with strict enforcement.. icon_rolleyes.gif

I've seen many smokers light up the cigarettes at kopitiam even though plenty of senior citizens or kids sitting nearby doh.gif

I do hope smokers be more considerate to the people surrounding them before thinking to light up cigarettes..

don't think increase in price will have much effect for smokers to STOP smoking.. hmm.gif hmm.gif

out of 10 people in kopitiam for example, 8 of them are smokers who smoke 2-3 sticks and sometimes they don't eat anything.. have seen the situation many times...
