Hi guys, I'm in the midst of quitting smoking now too. Its been 32 hours since my last cig. I hope this works out, I use to be a 20-22 stick a day person.

Any ideas on how to help take the edge off? I don't want to use nicotine gum, inhaler or patch.

Thanks. This is my only real attempt at quitting after smoking for last 13 years.

Scary

Way to go farkinid smile.gif

Now that you got your mind SET, it's a matter of your phychology strength to keep it up.

Can I ask you a question : Do you still have friends who you think WILL invite you to smoke again? (eg. hey farkin, wanna go for a smoke?).

Oh, and do you still hang out with smokers?

Now would be the best time to sit down and ponder... What's so good about smoking? Think of the thick disgusting smoke that's not only smelly but causes tar buildups inside you.. not good rite? So what's the point of smoking? Better quit.

stay close to people who want you to stop smoking! That is your best friend for now!

I have stopped smoking for 9 days. Let's keep it up!  thumbup.gif  thumbup.gif

Yeah, i still hang with smokers but these are my best friends whom I've known for years. Oh btw, can you tell me how you avoid that feeling of wanting to inhale smoke? Thats the biggest craving I have now.

Today being the 3rd day is still difficult but I think its working.... i hope....

15 or so years here. Quit in January this year. Forgive me if this turns out long but I find the following helps :-
  1. Get a cheerleader. Somebody who tells you that you are doing great and they are proud of you. Also this is the person to talk to when things get tough. This really helps on moments when you are down.
  2. Stop the drinks. Nights out is a bad idea with all the other smokers around you. There is no specific time you can go back, its really up to you but if you do go out when not ready, its going to be tough. This might even include mamak sessions and simple gatherings.
  3. Get a counter. Tracking your progress gives you a sense of pride and/or purpose. You need to know how well you've done and how you don't want to throw it all away. I use reddit's badgebot.
  4. Hit the gym (or bag). Breathing is an integral part of focusing and controlling urges. Exercise (or in my case boxing) is an EXTREMELY good way to control breathing. Also the dopamine release from hard exercise makes you forget about other things for a while.
  5. Trouble in threes. The first 3 days are immediate chemical withdrawal. This sucks bad. After 3 weeks of not smoking, the psychological withdrawal starts. It is constant and probably the most difficult (remember your cheerleader, this is where he/she will help). After 3 months, the brain gets subtle. Things are less "I WANT IT NOW!!", more "this would be nice with one". Its extremely tiring to catch but slightly better. I'll tell you more when I reach 3 years wink.gif

Don't get discouraged. Just push on. You can do it because you aren't worse of than anybody else. In fact you are stronger than those who have never quit because they don't know the pain. The struggle. You can do it.
