melways is probably one of the best maps ive ever used. as long as you know how to use it. you wont need a gps. especially because melbourne roads are very straight and lined up in grids. very easy. you might need a GPS in sydney though.
*
True. The roads in Melb are straight and relatively easy to use, unlike those spider-web highways in M'sia sweat.gif Melway is the best map as you'll be able to find alternative routes/shortcuts quickly rather than letting the GPS search for another route. Maybe it's just old-fashioned me, I still prefer reading physical maps than a tiny LCD screen.

Why can't we have proper maps like Melway in M'sia? I tried to look for maps for JB as many roads have been changed but I hated every version available, hence didn't buy any.

U can either stay at Darlington house, Forest Lodge. For these two place, u can apply through uni.But if u r looking for a better place (more expensive), Sydney University Village is the best place. There is one just opposite Braodway shooping centre called Unilodge. This 1 is demn expensive. If i am not wrong is $300++/week.Alpha house is not bad either but i think all rooms r studios.

Btw what r u going to study at USYD?

believer it or not, maps is still a controlled item in msia.........this dates back from the time of the emergency and communist threats, maps can be used by the insurgents, and hence good maps are closely guarded by the gov.......so the result is rough, tourist type maps........

the emergency has never been officially ended till now (that is why, the isa is still a current law), and there is still this fear about good accurate mays being used by negative elements.....

hence the lack of good maps for most of the towns in msia......... biggrin.gif

Hi, just wondering anyone here studying or studied in Deakin Melbourne Campus before?? I'm going for my post graduate studies in a few months time. Wondering if it is best to stay in Burwood or other places which are more nearer to the city but far from uni.

Any advice?

Sigh I'm not a really big fan of cooking. I don't believe in spending ages over cooking and then finishing it up in less than 20 minutes - doesn't seem that worth the effort. dry.gif
That is exactly what I'm doing - my college does twinning with RMIT, so I'm going there on my 3rd year (which is on the next sem).

Oh, mind to tell what program are you doing? Is it IT?

LOL GPS... I don't like using it as it doesn't necessarily point out the best route. Note that shortest route doesn't equate to easiest route.
I prefer using Routeplanner to plan my journey and then use Melway during the drive. Google Maps is useful too since you can preview the place you're heading to using the streetview option.

For those who will be driving, bookmark this:

It'll be your newest best friend along with Metlink and Uncle Google.

Haha sweet link!

Though I probably won't be driving. I don't know what to expect of Melbourne, so I thought having a GPS with maps would come in handy since my handphone has a GPS system built in.. especially since I get lost really easily. >_>

Though if I were to travel around in Australia.. yeah would come in handy. smile.gif

Do anyone from here actually cycle around in Melbourne? I was thinking of getting one, preferably 2nd hand, when I get there..

Hohoho. Make way make way. I think we should update the list in the front page. I'm now no more a Trinity College student but a Melbourne Uni student. smile.gif

Yeah I want to own one so I can get around without relying on public transport.. but then I gotta see for myself first la, like where I'm staying, how far is it from my uni, public transport's efficiency, etcetc.

The ultimate irony is that gunpowder is put in the same controlled item list as maps. But there is no shortage of people able to obtain gunpowder during the festive seasons. Getting detailed maps in Malaysia is near impossible.

Not sure where Google gets their street data from through, but it is reasonably accurate.

No shit.
I keyed in SS15 to Thailand, and the huge long list of directions were returned.

Zoom into KL's road system, all you see is interconnected spider web

Zoom into Melbourne's road system, you see very symmetrical boxes.

As a tourist, just bring in any small map. Carrying a Melway while walking does not help but put a label on your forehead. Put in some effort if you know where you are going, just head to google map and type in the location. You can't go wrong there. I don't own a GPS or Melway, but every time i'm supposed to drive up to somewhere i know before hand, google map's been the most trusty tool ever conceived. Yes, even the distance were pin point accurate.

Oh, I guess you are now studying in Taylor. I'm doing Computing, but syllabus is more or less the same with IT I suppose.

Thinking to transfer to RMIT is year 3, just don't know if it's possible or not.
