ok guys, to whom who want to use vga box

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

this model is VGA BOX 2198P, bought for RM120

inside got vga cable, y-splitter audio, power cable, vertical stand, manual

Im using a VGA LCD monitor, I need the vga box as a converter

Since Im using HDTV with HDMI cable before, so I need to change the display output setting first using HDTV + HDMI cable, then connect with component cable

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

component + audio cable with av multi in the other end

My PS3 is connected via HDMI to a 32" Samsung R81. Nothing to shout about..Colors are pretty decent except the reds which i find a bit exaggerated. Will try to upgrade to either a 42" Pioneer or 37" Phillips next year (that is if i strike lottery) tongue.gif

it's either 24" LCD monitor or full HD capable LCD tv to fully enjoy the HD world, furthermore, displaying 720p on a 22" will blurry because it's not the native resolution

ok jer, i'm using 1080p on that monitor. got pop-up on monitor saying its not optimum resolution or something, but just switch it off.

some games just support up to 720p, i guess the resolution changes once u start the game.

there are many LCD monitors and HDTV that "supports" 1080p through scaling. but a native 1080p display is more expensive. depends on what you are looking for.

The Dell 27" around 2k++. i'm using that atm and no complains. I think the 24" also can support 1080p but need forumners to verify this. You need to use a separate speakers btw.

I bought my Plasma TV from Kiara-com Sdn Bhd. They are Pioneer authorized dealer in KL.

The whole Home Theater System was setup by them, from cable to picture tunning.

No more already. I heard from Kiara-Com that many people looking for that model.

Now you can try Pioneer Plasma TV latest model "Kuro" 42-inch or 50-inch to play PS3 games.

I am not sure about 5.1 amp. blush.gif

Mine is Pioneer 130w 7.1 A/V Multi-Channel Receiver with 100w powered Subwoofer.

My home theater system is everything pioneer products. Don't know it is a good setup.

Initially I used it to watch TV and movies. After I got PS3, now I mostly use it to play PS3 games and watch blu-ray movies.

Im using Toshiba Regza 32" LCD HDMI with 1080i output for PS3 and component cable for Xbox360. Suprisingly is both console visual still look great eventhough Xbox360 only run with component cable.

The reason I chose Toshiba Regza is because its rated 5 stars among other 32" LCD in "What is Hi-Fi" magazine. The bad part is 32" LCD only capable producing 1080i res instead 1080p.

im doing some reading.........they said both 1080i and 720p is different by it line and the scan format...

for 1080i>>>>> more line and pixel but image not smooth and sharp during motion

for 720p>>>>>less line and pixel but smooth and sharp during motion

so not 720p or 1080i good..

You're not making any sense. You yourself already said that 1080i produces blurry and less smooth lines than progressive which means it's inferior to progressive.
More lines doesn't necessary conclude that it's better. Progressive yes but interlace no.

Can i use my laptop which is Compaq Presario V3000 for my PS3 ?
And what cables do i need ?
Looks like it only supports VGA, oh and there is s-video.
About the resolution, will it be better then using SDTV ?

u cannot differentiate both format like that..u have to understand the technology.P is progressive scan which means all the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence,i interlaced transmit odd lines first, then the even lines of each frame are drawn alternatively..1080i is more like 576p..theoretically,720P better than 1080i..

Added on December 28, 2007, 1:04 amRaiko,i have the same compaq laptop, that vga port only for output, not input..

You're not making any sense. You yourself already said that 1080i produces blurry and less smooth lines than progressive which means it's inferior to progressive.
More lines doesn't necessary conclude that it's better. Progressive yes but interlace no.
*
what i mean is that 720p and 1080i have their own pros and cons...

that's y they develop full HD (1080p) combination of smoothness image while motion (720p) and more pixel line (1080i)

u cannot differentiate both format like that..u have to understand the technology.P is progressive scan which means all the lines of each frame are drawn in sequence,i interlaced transmit odd lines first, then the even lines of each frame are drawn alternatively..1080i is more like 576p..theoretically,720P better than 1080i..
1080i more like 576p!! You're kidding lah dude.

Don't get so caught up in the progressive vs interlace thing man - just bcos progressive doesn't mean better!!!

If you want to talk about image information/pixels - clearly 1080i has more image information than 720p. Which one looks better depends on MANY factors including your TVs native res, de-interlacing capabilities, etc etc (including things like motion smoothing and others).

FYI HD Broadcasts in the US are in 1080i. So you're telling me you'd rather settle for 576p?

Most of the games are in 720P/1080i anyway. No point getting a full HDTV 1080P for a fortune and then play 99% of games that are only in 720P/1080i biggrin.gif.

Unless you want to watch Blu-ray movies and have lots of money, then get a 1080P.

Even then, any LCD-TV, 42" and below, difficult to tell difference between 720P and 1080P from a distance of 6Ft.

Um..so how do i know if a LCD computer monitor supports 1080p?

And which LCD monitors are these?
*
I'm using samsung 226bw (22") (native resolution 720p) and i set the display option in my ps3 to support up to 1080p. i'm using hdmi - dvi cable.

So actually my lcd can support 1080p but it shows a pop up msg saying its not the recommended resolution so i just switch the pop up off. u have 1080p icon_idea.gif

for some games that supports 1080p also can but at game start (when the screen refreshes and goes to the game screen) it pops up again the message but turn it off again and u can play at 1080p! if the game only supports up to 720p then the screen will adjust itself and no pop up msg anymore.

so if got pop up msg then i know im playing in 1080p. no pop up msg - 720p

cheap way getting HD hehee..tunggu bonus maybe go for 42"/50" LCD drool.gif

but if u want to get 1080p native resolution support then get 24" and above LCD..most have hdmi port and support 1080p

oh yea...the LCD must be HDCP

I think you guys are confused with 1080i

there is 2 type of 1080i
from film based source or video source.

if 1080i60 (film source) to recreate 1080p24 film based source, with a proper deinterlacing chip it should be no problem to get 1080p24 with minimal losses...

but from 1080i60 video source to 1080p60, then there will be losses/softness in resolution and blurriness between temporal frames...

im looking for a budget rm3k LCD putting in my room.
Any suggestion? I hope the LCD at least suport 720p. I don't mind the inches is lower than 32" as long as it supports 720p. In fact I think below 32" is better, 32" is still kinda big for my small room.. XD

US broadcasting 1080i content mainly because they cannot handle 1080p bandwidth..i don't caught up in the progressive vs interlaced thing,so no point buying 1080P (progressive) hdtv, where we can have 1080i(interlaced) hdtv

sony new S series 32" is 3K only..good 4 budget big screen drool.gif

mines just a samsung 22" LCD but support 720p, only 1.15K (can up 2 1080p also, but scaling only la..not true 1080p HD)

The R8 is better but after owning 2 of them, I think i've had enough of Samsungs. If money permits, I'm definitely saving up for a 42" Kuro later this year.

Mind sharing what's bad about Samsung LCD TV? The R8 looks good in terms of design (compared to S8). PQ wise not sure.

^ U need to sit right in the middle of the TV to achieve optimum picture. Try to view it at an angle an the screen turns "bluish". To sum it up, good picture (though the reds are over exaggerated) but extremely bad viewing angles. Try to read online reviews on the R8 and most of them do mention about the viewing angle.

I donno which is good to me. SO I just tend to support back the same brand sony n just go for the inches of the TV I actually wanted it to be.
HD ready is ur TV capable accepting n displaying a high-definition signal at either 720p, 1080i or 1080p using a component video or digital input and does not have a built-in HD-capable tuner.
Full HD is 1080p. If the TV itself stated Full HD means it's capable accepting n displaying a HD signal up to 1080p itself

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I called up my friend who is working at the Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission yesterday, to ask about the availability of digital broadcast in Malaysia (so that you can use the built-in digital tuner in your LCD TV to watch the channels).

He told me that currently we can only tune to RTM1 and RTM2, and also 2 additional digital channels provided by RTM; 1 is music video and he doesn't know the other one. These channels are still in testing phase.

So I guess the only main purpose for HDTVs now is to play nex-gen game consoles, other than watching Blu-ray movies smile.gif

For me, I dun like watching the TV with the pictures stretched out to fill up the widescreen. It makes Roger Federer looks fat tongue.gif

My suggestion, get a full hd display.

Btw, some might say that 1080p without the 100hz is crap, but for me it's still fine. At least 1080p is better than 720p/1080i what..... brows.gif icon_rolleyes.gif

How far will you be sitting in front of the TV? I was surprised to see how big the picture is in front of my 32". Got a HD Ready for myself yesterday. No complaints.

I've never compared 1080p with 720p before so can't really tell the difference. Plus, if you have eagle eyes then most probably you'll need a Full HD wink.gif

I think no difference, unless you're comparing it with the A83M which includes 100Hz feature. The A63M don't have.

And your budget is...?

I'd suggest the BenQ FP94VW though if your budget isn't entirely too high. Has HDMI, DVI and VGA ports. The best 19" widescreen monitor out there too IMO.

yeah, i am using my samsung 226bw. no prob and working great currently. this lcd work best with 720p setting. can be use to display 1080p, but not recommended as the display may be downscaled unevenly. for 1080p support, i guess better use 24" onward lcd monitor nod.gif

it's possible to get 720p on non-hdcp monitors, but there's just too much hassle involved
so you're better off getting a hdcp-ready monitor

plus blu ray movies require hdcp to work sad.gif

not sure about the viewsonic, but the samsung 206bw is hdcp-compatible (scroll down and see "Special Features" "DVI(HDCP)"

another alternative would be the Samsung 931BW

the 932b+ isn't a widescreen monitor, and i don't think it has hdcp.. sweat.gif
1080p is normally for monitors 24" and bigger, some smaller monitors though are capable of displaying 1080p, but scaled down to fit the monitor's size

i think the xbox360 has a vga cable, which makes things so much easier smile.gif

i m using benq fp94vw now. kinda cheap for a 19" widescreen (i get it for rm660). hav hdmi, dvi and vga port plus it has audio ouput oso. that's mean u can plug a speakers straight into d monitor if using hdmi port. den if manual set it can go up to 1080p but if use automatic settings from ps3 it giv max 1080i. but its enuf liao for me.

dun think there ll be much diff in image quality. mainly depends on how near u are 2 the screen and the size of the screen. so if at proper viewing distance, both lcd tvs n lcd monitors should be veli similar in image quality. but like i said proper viewing distance 4 the size of the screen u re using

Hi! I'm planning to get the 32" S series Bravia, coupled with Sony home theatre.

What my plan is:
Bravia connects to home theatre via HDMI to get the TheatreSync
then PS3 connects to the second HDMI port on Bravia
For the sound, PS3 will output to the Analog Audio IN (red & white analog) on the DVD player (of the home theatre set).

Since the normal range of home theatre does not have optical or hdmi IN, I'll have to use the analog cable. Not sure whether the home theatre will upmix the 2.0 signal into good quality 5.1?

Do you think its possible to setup this way?

you mean prologic II sounds worse than the TV one?
Hmm. in fact I've yet to try out PS3 purely on LCD speaker.

Anyway the hometheatre will be the last thing to get, which meanwhile I'll use my old Creative decoder for the optical IN 5.1.

226BW is the same as 931BW just with larger screen and larger native resolution, I heard that 226BW could display 1080p but dunno about the quality. Non-HDTV rip anime? better watch it with ur PC, then choose some deblocking to reduce the pixelazation

1)Samsung 206BW
2)Vsonic VG2030wm

are these monitors HDCP ready?

I'm using Samsung 206BW with HDMI->DVI cable.

It displays up to 720p only, 1080i and 1080p will have nothing on screen with a message not supported resolution.

My friend uses 226BW and he confirm it works with 1080i and not 1080p
He said, 1080i sux, 720p looks way better.

my 931BW can display 1080P in the xmb only but the LCD will come up with a text "Not optimised mode" but when i play DMC4 the game is scaled down and graphics looks very bad not sharp,so i set to 720P everything looks cool. icon_rolleyes.gif

I checked behind DMC4 box it says support 480P,720P so playing the game beyond its resolution will nt give better results izit? and example i seen assasin creed stating 1080I behind the box if i play at 720P will the graphic look bad? My monitor can only display 720P max. rclxub.gif

Ah, before anything I'm a Penangite so KL is out of the question. So how much is this Pioneer Kuro? (Actually I can take just about any HDTV as long as they last about 5-10 years and the price is over RM3000 and under RM5000). I don't think I can take 19" or 24" too small tongue.gif.

1080p is the resolution, you will notice finer dots and less jagged edges (console not like PC's graphic card can turn on Anti-Aliasing >.<)

It has nothing to do with colour production, sharpness depends on monitor too.

If you're searching forr 22" LCD monitor for your PS3,
i would like to recommend HP w2207h,which is the model that i'm using now.
comes directly with HDMI input, that means you don't need a DVI -> HDMI cable in order to display ur PS3s screen on ur monitor.

I use samsung 206bw. As long as you can play a single game on any monitor there shouldnt be a reason why it shouldnt play another game. Yeah it runs fine at 720p. You can force it to use 1080p but will sometimes face the nag screen that it isnt the best resolution. There isnt any visible difference between 720p and 1080p at this screen size.

And no I do not want to sell mine.

720P also looks good of course bigger the better, but most PS3 games support from 480P to 1080P,so any of these resolutions u still get HD quality,1080P needs LCD more than 24".

I'm also using Samsung 206BW. So far so good...works fine for me tho I suspect mine is a C panel. The panel info has been removed from the secret menu but my lcd is made in China sweat.gif Anyhoo, no complaints.

hi...can anyone help me out?

i'm thinking of getting the philips PFL 9532. specs like this, full HD, 3ms response, 100Hz, 1080p 24fps and 3HDMI.

i compare this with the older LCD's tv, and this one no jerky picture when got action on screen. but my friend say Philips lousy brand. and better go for Plasma.

anyone can share some thoughts on this?
thanks.

yes altec lansing speakers are 2.1. 2.1 basically means 2 speakers n 1 woofer and the guide says 2.1 speaker bcos its the cheapest n most convenient solution unless u haf a home theater set wit an optical input amplifier/ receiver n all.

Err..full hd panel LCD TV and you want to watch ASTRO..1 answer - NO GOOD smile.gif..you're definitely not gonna like the grainny picture..its not just philips..almost all full hd lcd tv..thats the main reason shops not showing astro on LCD anyway...we buy full hd for HD content..

PS3 / Blue ray
DVD - play with PS3 because it can upscale
Astro HD -> maybe in 1 year time

Good luck in your purchase...its a good TV with 5yrs Philips warranty...

I CAN VOUCH FOR THAT..

Astro on HD looks like crap...its not the TV but rather Astro's signal and the cables involved as well.. smile.gif

thanks for the info ka3tro and hitman190. so means i'll have to just accept the grainy picture on astro, until they stream HD content.

does astro have component output? if u use component, it's still the same? sigh. so complicated one.

i'm planning to get the philips ambisound system, which can upscale to 1080p. can astro be upscaled?

so far all i know is that Astro will be nigh impossible to get streamed into HD...even the shows like Nat-Geo and WWE Raw which both are HIGH DEF cannot be seen in high def mainly cause of Astro's signal..

in fact, Astro looks much better on a standard def TV then it does on a HDTV

8k is still reasonable but er omg 30k? sweat.gif

im using Kenwood amp for my ps3 with huge speakers.I tried using my sonic gear 2.1 system is just not enough punch,so i dismantle my hall AV amp coz seldom use redi,But the amp uses a Dolby surround so i cant utilise the Dolby Digital sound as the amp cant input AC-3 digital input sweat.gif ,so maybe wana get a amp with AC-3 and then use 5.1 audio i guess it will certainly make a huge difference in sound quality and stage.

lol i call myself noob bcuz after reading i still dun understand what is those DVB-T, RCA AV n so on stuff so beta ask the sifus here ( like u ) lo

i have check there are 2 version of the kuro 42. one is advance and another is the normal one.

after briefly read tru it. i found out one of the diffrence btween the normal and d advance kuro is that the advance version have ISF Calibration and have many sound option while the normal ones dont.

srsly the ISF Calibration sounds tempting drool.gif but dunno can really b gud on the ps3 or not. but heck if is way above 10k my budget beta stick to kuro 42.

btw do u tink is worth it for the kuro 50 and is only HD ready and it cost 15k?
gota check out this weekend if is that damm gud lol i dun mind saving another few months lol maybe by few months time d price will drop and i will get the kuro 60 instead (in my dreams lol)
but at the moment i stick with the kuro 42.

btw any other recomendation bside d kuro? LCD will be fine 2. aslong is great for astro and gaming lol i noe im being unreasonable for having a TV that is great for astro, gaming and movies. haha cuz this my 1st flat screen tv sure abit hope for the best lar. but hey no harm asking maybe there is one out there.

cheers smile.gif

i'm not sure if im keen to watch msia program in high def
but then if it start.. then there is more n more reason to get high def set..

so far high def sets are only for next gen console gaming in m'sia..
many ppl dont know about BD they are still happy with their RM5 DVD
which doesnt really utilizes,, HD
or even astro, its worse than dvd!

Check ur LCD monitor has HDCP in order for display if not certain lcd without HDCP u will not get display and need tedious work to get it 2 have display. If ur LCD has DVI theres a chance it will work even it has no HDCP.

Off topic or not, the guy is about to waste RM300 for nothing.

@kokanchai:

Please avoid paying RM300 for component cables. Gold-plated connection heads are for avoiding corrosion. It wouldn't add any difference in image quality wise.

Just go along to Jalan Pasar electronics shops and get a component cable there for RM20 only. Do not pay more than RM30 for a component cable, simply not worth it.

You best option would be :

Video : HDMI from PS3 to TV
Audio : Optical from PS3 to HTS (if there is optical in). Remember to set the audio out as Optical in your PS3. If no optical out then got to use RCA. Only 2 channels.

U know what.. if u go to One U new wing where they display the sony TV, they show all of them with motion flow n non motion flow whether it's on D series or V or W .. zzz.. Sometimes donno how to trust the video that they are playing.
I was told that for gaming D and V are the same. So I just wanted to confirm with this.. =(

It displays up to 720p only, 1080i and 1080p will have nothing on screen with a message not supported resolution.

My friend uses 226BW and he confirm it works with 1080i and not 1080p
He said, 1080i sux, 720p looks way better.

hey guys, i've been doing a lot of readings here and finally i bought myself a brand new 931bw yesterday rclxms.gif i dont have a ps3 (yet) so currently im connecting it to my laptop at the moment which works just fine. im wondering where do u guys get those hdmi->dvi cables and what's the usual price? i surveyed a few computer/game shops here and i was confused whether it's a male/female type.. i asked some of the shop keepers, they also told me about this vga box thingy which adds to my confusion.. but at the moment im sticking to this certain cable -> http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-2q-77-...en-70-1xna.html as one of u guys posted earlier.. and yes some shops differ between rm50 to even up to hundreds?? blink.gif
i know in order to connect to ps3 wud require me to hav hdmi->dvi cable, but how about connecting to a ps2? what type of converter/cables do i need to connect to my ps2? hope some of the sifus here cud guide me, thanks guys.

the a63 (which i think in aus they call it d63) is pretty good. i'd vouch for it from what i've seen in the shops, compared to sony. i didn't have a side by side test though, but i preferred the sharp over the sony on offer. in the end i ended up with a d83 though, which IQ/PQ is pretty much similar to the d63 apart from the 100hz thinggy, which i honestly can't sense at all. hope this helps

Most 32" lcd tv can display 720p as long as u have a player n HDMI cable that support 720p.

Alright, thanks for the info. Actually I've been looking for reviews of the a63 online for the longest time but have found nothing. now that I know they're also known as the d63 perhaps I can find some more insightful information. Thanks a lot biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Hi, I own the Dell E248WFP 24inch LCD monitor.
May I know whether it's good for PS3?
As the ratio is 16:10 instead of 16:9, will the game be stretched or there will be black bars?

ok ive bought 3 1080p hdtv this month just for ps3 and some bluray movie premium.. ill share u my experience..

1. Philips 37pfl7432

dark images are badly handled and shadow vibrates, straight lines are jagged, but other than that its not bad.

2. Sony 40W300
much better improvement as compared to the philips in all areas. but shadows still vibrates.. color handling is just as good as the philips, though W series can handle dark scenes better... no problems with this tv..

3. Sony 40x300a
some what identical with the W series in every game i tried.. kinda got pissed that i spent money on this while getting no upgrade... then i poped in Open Season... all i can say.. OMG MOTION FLOW !!!!!!!!!!!

so... conclusion.. Sony W series is the best bang for buck 1080p lcd u can get... X series is only for u if u plan to watch blurays on ure tv...

well.. not really big for an 'awesome' viewing pleasure, just ok lah. obviously 22" is better. and pls bear in mind, LCD Monitors and LCD TVs are two different things.

LCD TVs = have speakers
LCD Monitors = usually dont have speakers (so u nd seperate audio system)

Hey guys, can u recommend me a 22 inch LCD monitor. I've heard some 22inches can display 1080p but it is downscaled a bit to 1050p( which is still better than a 720p right?).

Actually i have two models in mind,

http://www.lge.com/products/model/detail/w2252tq.jhtml

and

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/detail/...=LS22AQWJFV/XAA

Care to give some opinion and advises??

Also will newer models be coming out anytime soon??

just to share my setup. i'm using benq fp94vw 19inch widescreen monitor. it has hdmi input with hdcp support. i connect my ps3 using a rm50 hdmi cable. my speaker is connected to the standard stereo audio out jack at the side of the monitor. i can use 1080p setting no problem. i tried 1080i but the fonts are not that sharp. i don't think i need to mention 720p. 1080p gives the best quality. the graphics in the xmb is very sharp. there are no ghosting. since it's a 16:10 monitor, the image is slightly compressed to fit the full screen. there is the option to use 16:9 but parts of the screen is cut out. this is the best monitor for those who wants 1080p but doesn't have the money to splurge on 24inch monitors or 1080p lcd tvs especially students.

I have a LG 32LC7R and my PS3 is connected thru HDMI. To be honest i can't even see a difference in font between 720p vs 1080p ... i'm not too techie on LCD TV but my 720p seems to be sharper than 1080i ...

that's because people tend to sit 2 feet from a monitor compared to 6 feet for tvs. i don't think that LG supports 1080p? easiest comparison, 1080p >720p>1080i

Skidd, how is that LG model?? Does it really have a 10.000:1 dynamic contrast ?? I've searches some website, some said it's 5000:1 only. 10,000:1 is just a advertising strategy??

How well is that monitor??

Can it display a downscaled 1080p?? like a 1050p??

yep this monitor is dvi & vga only ..no diff in terms of hdmi or using dvi to hdmi cable .. so i'm not missing it.
Prev using benq 19" hdmi and a 22" dell .. for me this monitor is a step up frm those 2 ...i got it from viewnet for rm940

anyway if u got the money u can try to get benq 24" hdmi monitor for rm1300 which does 1080p and hdmi audio (line out jack located on the monitor side panel)

kalau u nak carik 32" LCD TV skg .. tutup mata tangkap V series 32 je

i connect it to my LCD monitor (Samsung 932B 1280x1024) using HDMI to DVI cables

i've seen possibly all major manufacturers' LCD monitors, ranging from 19" to 22".

all of them, except for samsung, got lower max resolution than the full HD by PS3.

then my question is, if i decided to buy lets say a less than 1080 resoluted screen, then how about my PS3 display would be? crappy? or QUITE good?

Hi guys, may I ask a simple question? How does the display differs from a Samsung and a BenQ LCD Monitor? Which brand does the "WOW!" display lol. Its for my PS3 anyways smile.gif Thanks
*
definitely Samsung. BenQ has poorer contrast ratio across the range, it's quite budget-oriented so can't really make a fair comparison here.

someone selling DELL lcd monitor 22'' MODEL : E228WFP at 800RM and i did browse through dell's website.

almost all 22" inch monitors have lower than full HD resolution, and next DELL model that offered full HD is about 550RM more than the above mentioned model.

i guess i dont have anymore choice but to select the cheapest yet good quality lcd monitors. and since DellTM E228WFP 22" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor only offer max resolution 1680x1050, so i'll be playing at 720

anyone wanna give anysort of suggestion on my monitor selection? in terms of display quality perhaps?

etcherz or sorry i forgot your name...
you calibrated the ps3 to your cable or not? I just bought mine today... shop told me if you start with new cable must press on button for 3-5 secs and wait for 2 beeps to sound. Then your ps3 will calibrate automatically to your cable and tv. otherwise no pic or no sound.

I also haven't bought tv... looking at 37"-40". Reading the HDTV thread. But now look at this thread already very takut to buy. Apparently all of you say bigger than 32" will have crappy picture... really ah?

I'm using PS3 on my DELL 2707wfp. Still deciding whether to use the component (1080i) or dvi(1080p) input.
Seems like folklore demo will revert to old tv resolution if it detects you're using component cable.

If the LCD support the 1:1 pixel mapping, there will be no crop issue. Widescreen LCD are 16:10 while PS3/Xbox360 are 16:9, thus the LCD need to crop it in order to fit the screen.

Even if you get 24" (1920x1200), you still need 1:1 pixel mapping support.

1920x1200 will be full screen under 1080p format but the image will be stretched to fit the screen. Through pixel mapping method, you will see black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. This is normal because it output the correct 1080p format.

thanks for the explanation bro! smile.gif

hmm from the picture above, the cropping seems quite bad. so I need to get one with pixel mapping now, I don't think I can live with the cropping, it'll reduce the gameplay experience sad.gif

any recommendations? does the Viewsonic VX2235wm-5 have pixel mapping? I was pretty set on that one.

edit: hmm after some reading it seems that only the Samsung 2253BW is capable of 1:1 pixel mapping. and it seems that only GT5P at 720p has this issue.. haih big decision to make here, the Samsung 2253bw is RM100 more expensive than the Viewsonic, and for a working student, that's alot of money..

Grab a LCD TV for the gest gaming experience. Even have sellers here in LYN selling 32-inchers @ RM1899.

Once you have the larger displays, you won't look back already on LCD monitors.

I've got a 24" DELL and 37" Sammy LCDTV. Once you go big, no way you're gonna go back to small.

student working part-time here to earn cash la friend, plus, if I buy a 32-incher, there's no way I can carry that into uni.. sweat.gif 'coz once I enrol, I'll be staying on-campus.

and if I use my dad's 32-inch, I can't play at nights.. only during the day when he's not around.. sad.gif so have to settle for the best compromise.

still, I might consider just that..

Yes, the cropping are really bad. Some people can tolerate it while for most gamers, they would do away with the cropping. As far as i am concerned, most Dell model have 1:1 pixel mapping support but these brand are known for been expensive.

GT5P is a full 1080p game.

Of course the bigger would be the better but you need to know 37" is not the full 1080p format while any 24" LCD monitor can output 1080p full HD format. For LCD TV to output full HD, you need to get atleast 40" and above. It will cost you a bomb. Therefore, LCD monitor is the most ideal and cost saving option for playing PS3/Xbox360 consoles.

I have seen the comparison shot with many types of LCD TV brand and the best result is Sony Bravia model.

PS3 most of the game available now are not 1080p mostly 720p, but blue ray movie is 1080p.

1366*768 LCD is affordable and good enough for most of the PS3 game & blu ray movie. Full HD is still expensive at the moment, price will always drop in the future why buy now and future proof it?

Nope, this dell 22' LCD Mon max is reached 1050 only. It want to get pixel to pixel for 1080, smallest size will be 24' model.

Added on May 16, 2008, 11:33 am

PS3 most of the game available now are not 1080p mostly 720p, but blue ray movie is 1080p.

1366*768 LCD is affordable and good enough for most of the PS3 game & blu ray movie. Full HD is still expensive at the moment, price will always drop in the future why buy now and future proof it?
*
May i know which 24" Dell are you refering to?

Is it the (DellTM E248WFP 24" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor) or (DellTM UltraSharpTM 2408WFP 24" Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor)?

Both got different price..infact it doubles...

Thanks,

Just wanna ask about those LCD with dual input (DVI and analog), is it possible to connect both PC and PS3 to it at the same time where we can switch between those two during operation.

Samsung 206BW CAN SUPPORT 1080p, but there will be always an annoying message "Not optimal, optimal is 1680x1050 bla bla" whenever you switch to 1080p mode, just press the Menu button on the monitor once and the message will go away.

It is quite obvious that the 1080p in 206BW is downscaled to 1680x1050 thats what meant by the message.

In my opinion, go and get lcd tv (at least 32" if you can). I have friends with 24" samsung monitor, 26" (sony) lcd tv and 32" lcd tv (lg) and sad to say that the 32" pawned both of them greatly when playing bluerays to the point that i think it's not worth it to buy either 24" or 26". Its better to just save up some more. That's only my opinion though.

no idea lol. got no test subject on that xD. the lg i was talking about is lg 32lb76. But i've seen a Samsung LE-37M86BD. lg is about rm 2500 now and the samsung is around 3500-3750. lg is only hd ready and the samsung is full hd. In my opinion, the 37 samsung is better than 32 lg, its picture is more "vibrant" and the black level is better. You get what you pay for i guess. But 32 lg is NOT bad at all! One drawback for the samsung is its low frequency rate, only 50hz lol.

New Samsung Series 5 LCD TV are FULL HD. Price starts from RM3799 for 32". Potential buyers should seriously consider this panel. Now gamers can game @ FULL HD. Gone are the days where gamers will have to choose hard between a HD Ready panel and FULL HD panel tongue.gif

For any screen 40 inch and below, human eyes cannot differentiate 720p and 1080p. So it's actually a waste of money to buy Full HD for small screens....just my humble opinion

You are partially correct. If you sit far away, you won't notice the difference. However, if you were to sit closer to the screen, thats when FULL HD will beat the crap out of HD panel only. flex.gif

Pretty much yes. And again, GTA4 is only running at 640p. Way, way lower than your native res of 19x12.

Does that Samsung of yours have 1:1 pixel mapping? Enabling it will help a little.

Just wanna say I bought the Samsung 943BWX 19" LCD monitor and using HDMI-DVI cable where it sets at 1080i resolution, although the box or manual does not state HDCP but the website does mentioned it so for those who wish to buy this model no worries it works with PS3. I bought my HDMI-DVI cable at a shop in Holiday Plaza, JB near the KFC for RM35.

According to a friend of mine..he'd recommend getting a HDMI->DVI cable/adaptor..that is if you're planning to use the HDMI output..

If I'm not mistaken..if you're using this method..you've gotta be sure that your LCD monitor supports HDCP (google it up)

Or you could always use a LCD Box (Or something like that) to convert the normal composite video output to your monitor's VGA input

Btw..this should be in the Playstation forum..lol

This is as much as I know..there's probably better or alternative methods//

can anyone know how to tell if the monitor got 1:1 pixel mapping? for example:

key specifications

* Screen Size : 19" wide
* Resolution : 1440 x 900
* Brightness : 300 cd/m²
* Contrast Ratio : DC 8000:1 (1000:1) (Typ.) <---- is it that?

the (1000:1) ??? means 1:1 pixel mapping?

Thats contrast ratio, nothing to do with 1:1 pixel mapping.

Its quite rare that LCD makers states 1:1 pixel mapping in their spec sheets for their LCDs though. Either download the manual of an LCD you are looking for or search for reviews about it. Or before you buy an LCD, check to see if therse 1:1 pixel mapping or not.

Using Dell SP2208WFP sure beats the crap out of 32" LCD TV and 22" DVI monitor. This is because DELL SP2208WFP are able to receive 1080P signal and downscale it to 1680x1050. Excellent monitor for it's pricing. My Sharp 32" LCD TV looks OK running 720P for GT5P sad.gif DELL wins hands down.

I just bought a Samsung 2253BW today smile.gif

RM910.

very happy with the PQ. my PS3's coming tonight so I'll be able to see how it performs.

it looks FREAKING SWEET with the Xbox 360 hooked up to it, so I'm expecting something similar from the PS3.

gonna use DVI to HDMI.

use the composite cables to connect to your speakers, and get the PS3 to output sound from there. it's possible.

Using Dell SP2208WFP sure beats the crap out of 32" LCD TV and 22" DVI monitor. This is because DELL SP2208WFP are able to receive 1080P signal and downscale it to 1680x1050. Excellent monitor for it's pricing. My Sharp 32" LCD TV looks OK running 720P for GT5P sad.gif DELL wins hands down.

erm most LCD TV also able to do that la (those that support 1080p signals)..

i have Dell 24" and its the best monitor i have at home..
but my samsung 32'' series 4 is easily surpasses in terms of image quality, color, etc..
resolution of coz 24" is full HD & samsung series 4 is 720p..
otherwise it is very much better

i think maybe ur sharp is older model?

Ya, can display 1280x720P only. DELL can receive input signal of 1080P and downscale to 1680x1050. Smaller screen higher resolution, sure image quality looks better.

For those who are planning to get a benq fp241w/z, the 1:1 mapping isn't accurate as 1080p has black borders all around (top, down, left, right).

Now i'm not sure whether the problem is with the lcd or the console bcoz it works fine for the PC.

I'm gonna try it out on a dell fpw2407 2morrow..

yes it does downscale 1080p to 720p..
but at the end of day u are looking at 720p what, i doubt its better looking..
its the same resolution.. 720p still 720p regardless u have a 1080 source..

even ur monitor is 1680x1050, its still 720p image..
its stretched slightly

Yes, it does downscale to 720P if the title is of 720P, so there won't be difference between monitor and LCD TV. However, comparing 1080P title such as GT5P, the difference is huge. You can clearly see the jagged lines of the speedometer/rev meter sweat.gif

so does this mean that this particular dell monitor downscales any games/movies that are 1080p to 1050p instead of 720p?which also means less image cropping..am i right?sounds good to me..

ok i hav confirmed it.. the benq fp241w is UNABLE to display 1:1 mapping accurately through hdmi.. it will display even 1080p sources at a smaller scale.. though dvi works perfectly fine..
