I was insulted once again in my life by doing passport🄺

šŸ“¢Today I want to share with you how miserable it is for people who cannot speak Malay in Malaysia😭 This is the second time I was insulted in UTC Johor! Last time it was me who was insulted, this time it was my daughter, both in the same place!

Today I took my daughter to UTC Johor (Polow branch) to renew her passport. We are both Malaysian citizens, but we have been studying in Singapore since childhood (my daughter and I are the same), so we are not very fluent in Malay, but we are educated and polite. And respect still understands! First of all, I got there around 8 o'clock. I had to sit outside and wait before I went in to get the number. I waited for about an hour before I could go in and get the number. We arrived around 9 o'clock. I happily went in and queued up to get the number, and then we arrived. , there was a man serving us at the service desk. Because I really don’t speak Malay very well, I might ask in English when I opened my mouth. The male service staff asked me how old my daughter was? My daughter answered him: 14 years old (answered in English). He looked at my daughter and said: "How do you say 14 years old in Malay? He told my daughter to speak Malay! This is Malaysia, are you a Malaysian? You are Malaysian People must speak Malay!" His tone was very fierce, and then he continued to talk about me and my daughter: "Do you know this is Malaysia? You don't know Malay? It is very important to speak Malay when going abroad to Taiwan (I was suddenly very scared😰), You still can’t speak it? Are you a PR? PR or a Malaysian citizen. You can’t speak Malay with a Malaysian IC. If you can’t speak Malay, you can consider becoming a Singaporean citizen! Not in Malaysia! English is not spoken here!ā€ (I tried to explain: Sorry abang, we studied in Singapore since we were young, so we really don’t understand... Before he finished speaking, he started to curse again: And then? Do you still want to do it? If you don’t want to do it, you can leave immediately. !😄I was really helpless at the moment, but I held it in😄tears were about to flow out😣) We, mother and daughter, stood there and scolded him stupidly... We didn’t dare to contradict him because we were afraid that getting up so early would be a waste of time. time, and then I said to him in a low voice: Sorry, we really have to renew our passports. Can you give me your number? He had a very unhappy face and gave me his number with a very unhappy attitude. . We found a seat awkwardly and sat down😟

I'm wondering why you bully people like this? Do we deserve to be insulted like this because we don’t know Malay? Will he be caught by the police? This is the second time I have been to this UTC and I was scolded for not speaking Malay!

After waiting for about 30 minutes, we finally arrived, and what followed was another wonderful momentšŸ˜„

There was a woman at the counter, and she thought she was more polite. As a result, my daughter was taught Malay. She also told her how old she was, her name, her mother’s name, and her father’s name in Malay. Since my daughter was very young, I She and her father were divorced, so I told the counter girl: Sorry, I am divorced, so my daughter has been with me since she was a child. I don’t know her father’s namešŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøā€¦I’m sorry! Then came the problemšŸ˜…The woman asked me: Do you have the divorce certificate? Is the child with you? So is there proof of child custody? (Suddenly I was even more annoyed😨) I asked her: "Do I need these when I come to renew my passport? But why didn't I need these when I helped my daughter make a passport for the first time last time? Then when I asked what materials I needed to prepare, why didn't I say yes? Divorce certificate and custody certificate? In the end, she only answered me: Now the SOP has changed, these documents are needed!😣 I didn’t argue with her, after all, I don’t know Malay😭 I said I was sorry that I didn’t bring it, and she said directly: I didn’t bring it. ?Can’t do it! (I feel really fucking helpless in my heart) She didn’t let us do it, so we left helplessly)

I really don’t understand why these people are so discriminatory towards us who don’t speak Malay! I didn’t mean it, I didn’t make things difficult, and I asked politely, but as a result, I was bullied for my kindness!

‼ ļøRemind everyone who does not speak Malay to go to such a place to find someone who can speak Malay to accompany you! Don't let these people ruin the mood of a beautiful day like ours 7 a.m. 8 a.m.‼ ļøReally disappointed and sad😫😫😫

Ending: In the end, I found a friend for help (someone who knew the department) and finally succeeded in getting the passportāœŒšŸ»I also bought a bag of rice for him to eat and thanked him for his help🄹 So what is the so-called need for a divorce certificate and custody certificate? They are just making things difficult for us and not letting us do it! There are so many people in the world who fart! Wait until God takes you!

Too bad it's not on video or else it can go viral, the easiest way to get relief these days.

Unfortunately the officer is right to be dubious when someone tries to claim he/she is a Malaysian and yet can't really prove it.

However the SOP questions are exactly that: SOP. Just imagine someone try bringing a random child, telling people the kid is theirs but have no documentation, and btw they are planning to go overseas...

Something i don't understand...why do I see so many Bangladeshis and Nepalise workers being conversant in Malay when a so-called Malaysian isn't? Is BM that difficult to learn or these Malaysians have lower intelligence than those foreign workers?

I kinda disagree, my privileges as a Malaysian are not determined by whether I know BM or not, if I am a citizen, then I should be able to get a passport, an IC, etc.

Do IRB tax me based on my knowledge of BM (no because the tax laws are not made like that, same argument - is passport/IC eligibility based on mastery of BM or based on citizenship/PR status?)? If govt can tax me, then govt should provide services due to me as a taxpayer and citizen.

I know someone in his late 40s who cannot converse in Malay, been staying here all his life. As long as BM is required, he'll need a translator.

In Penang, I have seen others struggling to even buy nasi campur if the Malay sellers can't understand English.

Banggala, Vietnamese, Myanmar came to work in Malaysia can speak Malay in just few month even with dialect a bit but can communicate quite well. It is not that some Chinese cannot speak at all, they just don't even want or try. Who cares about not fluent or upside down because those who speak English also many not speaking proper English also.

Many old Chinese taxi drivers who hardly have to speak Malay in Singapore can speak Malay so well even better than many Chinese in Malaysia. Some even sound like Malay laugh.gif

This is on you bro.. this is not about racism or what.

If you are Malaysian, you need to be able to speak Malay language, dont need to be fluent (everyone or that officer will understand)

but if you can't communicate in Malay, it is very bad example for yor children. This is only applicable if you are tourist only

It's impressive u can avoid using Malay when u are staying in Malaysia permanently.

More effort is required to be not know BM than to just learn some basic BM. You do not have the right mindset in life. Ever heard about life is a never ending learning journey. Be honest with yourself, how did u do it (avoiding BM totally), why?

If govt can tax me, then govt should provide services due to me as a taxpayer and citizen.

no need, just dont expect special treatment when dealing with JPN/immigresen, this is organization under KDN (Kementerian Dalam Negara). Being nice is not their main responsibility.
disappointed in immigresen my ass, why you dont feel disappointment of not learning BM youself in first place?

If you are Malaysian, you need to be able to speak Malay language, dont need to be fluent (everyone or that officer will understand)

but if you can't communicate in Malay, it is very bad example for yor children. This is only applicable if you are tourist only

I'm Chinese and I can speak BM well, Seriously learn BM... it'll do you more good, they'll be friendlier and help you. If You want others to respect you, why not give them respect as well?
Most of the time when a stranger talk to me in those Ah Pek Melayu style (I don't know why they do that, do they think it'll me understand them better? or just racist mocking?), I'll just talk back to them in proper BM. They'll be either shocked or impressed but most of them just behave better around me after that.
Bila petah dalam berbahasa Melayu, nak maki balik pun senang.

Malaysian should be able to converse simple Bahasa Malaysia.
This is a must. Although, we might not like it, but, eventually, it is because of the country we are staying and this is also the respect we are showing to the country we are staying.

While I really feel sorry for people who have to deal with rude civil servants, I also feel that it is totally unacceptable that a person who wants a Malaysian passport can't even speak Malay. You are not giving a speech to the immigration staff, just asking simple questions and even this also cannot means how to know whether you are really a citizen or someone with fake documents?
Claimed to have studied in SG but English also berterabur can't understand what you are trying to convey.

Don't confound requirements for getting naturalised/citizenship with services due to a citizen. I am already a citizen. I know and speak BM adequately, many buyers of items I sold are surprised I am not Malay when we meet up. Over the phone only know I am non when I don't reply the aunty no husband greeting.

Can someone find in Immigration website saying passport applicants need to demonstrate adequate BM mastery if they are already citizen?

This is what I hate, little napoleons implementing their own rules in providing services to those who are entitled to it, because if someone can come up with their own requirements - don't blame when those who come up with their own reasoning not to pay tax la, not to do this la, don't follow traffic rules la, etc etc.

Means government can strip your citizenship based on this clause alone. Immi and JPN has powers to annual your citizenship if you fail to grasp this even basic language. Just because they didnt dont, doesn't mean they can't. Sure, you can always hire a lawyer to fight this in court

A professor from Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has suggested that Malaysian children are required to learn and be proficient in the Malay language before they are entitled to the blue identity card and officially becoming a citizenship of the country.

Datuk Dr Zainal Kling, a professor at UUM’s college of law, government and international studies wrote in Mingguan Malaysia, that language used to be a compulsory requirement for someone to be entitled to a citizenship, but it was removed by the Parliament when then Gerakan co-founder Tan Sri Dr Tan Chee Khoon stated that Malaysians had already learnt Bahasa Malaysia (BM), the country’s national language, even in Chinese and Indian vernacular schools as well as in other national schools.

In the words of Datuk Zainal:

ā€œIf the third requirement, their language, is not fulfilled, don’t give them the blue identity card, give them the temporary red one.ā€

The red MyKad is given to permanent residents of the country. Currently a child is granted Malaysian citizenship if one or both parents are Malaysians or a permanent resident.

Last time this was removed but doesn't mean it won't be reintroduce again looking at our politics at the moment

Basic BM is a must if you hold Malaysian passport.

National language proficiency is a requirement when applying for citizenship in many, many countries and it carries on forward (that you have that proficiency).

Also, if a person is already so remote from the culture (coming back only to renew passport then leave), then maybe another passport closer is a better option.

Said this before, malay is relatively an easy language to learn. Roman alphabets, consistent pronunciation rules, non-gendered nouns, no changes to verb for past-present-future tenses, borrowed english terms.

It's baby mode of Rosetta Stone. Definitely no excuse if you're born / lived here for a long time.

I judge thee bait.

Means government can strip your citizenship based on this clause alone. Immi and JPN has powers to annual your citizenship if you fail to grasp this even basic language. Just because they didnt dont, doesn't mean they can't. Sure, you can always hire a lawyer to fight this in court
Already one guy voicing it out

Good luck
Last time this was removed but doesn't mean it won't be reintroduce again looking at our politics at the moment

Again, you confound what might happen with what is already the law now, you cannot strip a person of Malaysian citizenship for not knowing the national language. Future we don't know.

Lucky la born citizen. If you want to apply for Malaysia citizenship, BM knowledge is a requirement.

TS is a known racist prick but I agree that citizens should be able to speak at least basic Malay. Feels like cina kampung people. If even the mom studied in SG but still a malaysian citiizen but dont want to pick up basic malay, then dont blame others for being rude to you.

no farking pity for the aunty... I mean, it's ok for you to reside in a country without knowing / speaking their language, but not right / reasonable if you are that country's citizen holding their passport

This how i'm reading it...

'I was insulted once again in my life by doing passport🄺'

I was scolded... because the officials has no time for me. Boo hoo...

"It is very important to speak Malay when going abroad to Taiwan."
The officer has a valid point. Immigration at arrival in airports can deny entry if they suspect that passport holder has a fake passport or another person's passport.

Pity him, give long long advice and wrongly understood as a scolding and an insult.

"Sorry, I am divorced, so my daughter has been with me since she was a child. I don’t know her father’s name."

Tis why I reading it as above... she's clearly nuts. Divorced and yet don't know former husband's name!!! Hahahaha 🤣

akceli this is doable... a person just need to get his / her daily goods / food from seller that can understand english or whatever language that he / she knows
I worked abroad for 5+ years in KSA, 3+ years in Myanmar, and 5+ years in Cambodia, all without ability in conversing in local language

but to hold that country's passport, you gotta at least know that country's language

Sorry to say, when in Rome, you have to do as the Romans do.

While its not right the way you were treated, but you should also have made some effort to learn enough Bahasa to get by. This is Malaysia. Even the country name has the word Malay in it.

Since you've been working so long in Singapore, may make more sense for you to be a SG citizen instead. Then you won't have such problems moving forwards.

BTW, you talk about respect but the way you curse at the perpetrators at the end of your story also show some lack of respect from your end.

To get replacement passport in case of losing to theft or missing in the Malaysian Foreign Office is the standard questions regarding the country, understanding simple malay conversation etc...so its no harm in learning the lingua franca that is used extensively in the region.

QUOTE(RT8081 @ Nov 30 2023, 02:19 PM)
Can. Read and write but never went to SJKT
*
Before I bagi soalan susah kepada RT8081, jelas sedikit stance saya.
I dont know her, but I would bet good money if she's being held at gun points, a lot of Malay words would come out from her.
This lady is a Sohai that think she's higher class because she uses English, and never intended to deal with anyone else, other than those in her bubbles.

Good for you to know Tamil and you know who never go to SJKC/SJKT or even SJK?
My grandparents and alot of people that didn't even go to school was able to converse in Melayu tells that it's not about schooling but willingness.

In those close minded people's mindset, they think that they've been wronged by the country/malay majority and therefore they refuse to use it.

QUOTE(RT8081 @ Nov 30 2023, 02:27 PM)
Means government can strip your citizenship based on this clause alone. Immi and JPN has powers to annual your citizenship if you fail to grasp this even basic language. Just because they didnt dont, doesn't mean they can't. Sure, you can always hire a lawyer to fight this in court
Already one guy voicing it out

Good luck
Last time this was removed but doesn't mean it won't be reintroduce again looking at our politics at the moment
*
Agreed.

My question is would the officer put her application on review, or even rejected her.
But the reality is the officer scolded her but at the end still let her renew her daughter passport.

Sounded like a certain grab ahpek to you? sounded the kopiah kid but still deliver the boy to at least a designated safe points.

That is why Malaysia is losing plenty of talented people to Singapore because of arbitrary government servants that wants to be a little napoleon. From what you wear to what language you speak. In fact their inability to speak English reflects their inability to function in a multi-cultural society. You want to have FDI at the same time insisting letters to be written in BM to government agency is pretty dumb. You want to be heard internationally in the UN but speak BM? Be practical and you will succeed. Singapore attracts investors because race and religion is not important.

I would say salahan government to retain the vernacular school in Malaysia education system. Because of these SK/SJK©/SJK(T), student do not focus on national language. Also, it contributes to racial divide.

IC is just a prove of citizenship, which allows you to get services.
good luck getting one without speaking or understand BM word with no assistance from anyone

so freaking easy to learn BM, i just witness few tourist in penang try hard to speak BM(saya nak (pointing finger to food), berapa?) just to buy nasi kandar macam macha cant understand english. dunno why got some people die2 refuse to learn it and kecam other people for not entertain you nicely when you need the service.

see the borang to apply for IC, not even translated.

Don’t worry I speak better BM than most Malays

My point still stands. You showed a form for application of citizenship which is completely irrelevant for people born to Malaysian parents.

To add on, I don’t even know why you brought up IC. Completely irrelevant again.

Agreed.

My question is would the officer put her application on review, or even rejected her.
But the reality is the officer scolded her but at the end still let her renew her daughter passport.

Sounded like a certain grab ahpek to you? sounded the kopiah kid but still deliver the boy to at least a designated safe points.
pkm TS put a google translated article and didn't bother to mention it.

Yup, I am dealing with immi every few years to renew my wife's spouse visa. Trust Me, the last thing you want to do is to speak in English. I always speak Bahasa and in softer voice lol. Even if I kena tembak verbally also I will apologise and ask their budi bicara to continue.

Got one time I kena scolding also but I had to put thick face and say sorry.

Because at the end of the day, like or not, it won't be their lost but mine if I adamantly to do it my way šŸ˜…. Never mess with civil servant because they can make our life miserable

Only those lower level staffs cannot speak english. Most officer level wont have this problem. To be an officer you need a degree but those clerical level only require minimum spm level and unfortunately these are the people who manned the counters. thats why english among civil servants are so bad

thats how we deal with JPN wheres majority of their customer are locals.
forcing their costumer to speak/write/read BM are their SOP. their website doesnt have translated version too.

we know their service are not world class level, but if you need their service, complaining because feeling being insulted will not get your application process being entertain faster.

memalukan so-called malaysia citizen cant speak BM even a bit when we expect new malaysia citizen to know BM. being singapore, english, chinese-educated is not an alasan.

Though I say you Sohai Sinkieporkie should at least be able to communicate in basic Bahasa at giv office but the gov servant punde must be reminded he is a servant for tax payer not Palestine. Btw why not you renounce your Msian citizenship and instead stay here as PR while being Sinkiepork citizen.

Yeah, it's misleading to equate citizenship with ability to speak malay. Ability to speak malay is a qualification for a foreigner to apply for malaysian citizenship.

Just as misleading as grandfather's story that if he doesn't vote, he will lose his i/c and citizenship.

Well you can say whatever you want but the rights to citizenship via birth from Malaysian parents is in our constitution and believe it or not you don’t need to know BM

I don’t know about this case, but I know some Malaysians with zero BM because they live their entire lives overseas. This is very common with Malaysians born to Malaysian expats overseas and even diplomats kids.

Where malu or not is up to you to interpret, but I can understand where they’re coming from.

Actually yes. Many Chinese Americans have Chinese passport as well but they speak zero Chinese. They’re either born in US or migrated as a child.

China will treat them as Chinese citizens and not American citizen if they’re in China as it doesn’t recognise dual nationalities.

People who don’t speak national language is very common among overseas born citizens or migrated as a child. In the US there’s many European Americans with dual citizenships but they can’t speak their native European language. They all acquired European citizenship through their parents.

In fact, just two days ago I got to know a Korean American who doesn’t speak Korean. She recently got her citizenship by serving as a nurse in US Army after six years. But she cannot speak Korean as she grew up in the US. Her parents don’t have US citizenship or green card that’s why she never have American citizenship either. But now that she had acquired US citizenship, all her family members get to stay in US indefinitely (I think all of them get GC through her citizenship)

Because it’s their fundamental right. The rights to citizenship cannot be denied if they’re born to Malaysian parents. 99% of /k/ are citizens via their parents, so it will be quite hypocritical for us to judge them for exercising their right. You became a citizen the same exact way as they did.

Maybe they can’t speak because they never grew up here

And you can’t expect them to just let go of their citizenship because they’ll become stateless. And giving up their citizenship doesn’t mean they’re guaranteed to be a citizen of another country anyway

if all government office allow you to deal with foreign language, then people dont find necessary need to learn it. besar suara sikit pon terasa, hati tisu betul. alot of time gomen officer being rude also because their customer are rude in first place, cuba cakap baik2 in reduced tone, you may get treated differently.

Got Bahasa in syllabus doesn’t mean can speak. Also learning Bahasa is optional in SG syllabus. The requirement is learning one mother tongue which can be BM/Chinese/Tamil etc

Case in point - Malaysia. Here every kid also have to learn Bahasa but it’s evident some cant speak right. So if live in Singapore even la worse.

Also most Singaporeans have shitty BM. I even realise many of them don’t even know what’s they’re singing in their national anthem.

I don't know about Singapore syllabus - but I doubt they can even speak basic Malay, the most they know is the lyrics in the national anthem. I don't think they can carry a conversation in Malay there.

Don't forget, the Lee family are actually peranakans, that is why they can speak Malay, but I don't think the next gen can speak Malay.

Regional language la.

U can see MP in Indian parliament speaking their own regional languages. Language in India is sensitive. Southern will not accept Hindi and northern trying to Hindi the whole nation lol

Oh yeah I think I should point out that learning Bahasa is optional.

Singapore syllabus requires you to learn a mother tongue. That can be either BM or Chinese or Tamil.

So not necessarily you’ll learn BM

It's not they don't understand BM, they just can't converse.

They can't string a sentence and speak fluently. More like stuttering and mix with English. Many sjkc kids also like this, sad.

It's ok. Since u n daughter already in Singapore and your daughter study there since young, it won't be a surprise u won't be expose to BM language. These Malays ( many but not all) are getting worst by the day in Malaysia. Their mentality is very rude towards people that don't align with their personal thinking. Don't expect polite ppl in the service counter. And don't bother trying to explain why u and daughter can't understand bm. They can't be taught manners of understanding. It's different than in Sg. U should apply for PR in Sg and then citizenship there if u really have no plans staying in msia in future

A long as Malay is not allowed to be used for certain issues it makes no sense to require everyone to speak it.

Actually Malaysia needs to decide if BM is supposed to be the language for everyone, including christians and drunkards. Or if it is a language for a very sensitive peninsular majority who need to be protected from all kinds of confusion at all points.

Regardless what is the reason, immigration as a government agency should do their job professionally. Not their job to judge people who doesn’t speak Malay.

I do agree the girl should put in more effort learn BM. But that is her personal choice. Still I wouldn’t insult her because of that.

But attitudes matters, coz in service line. Tak ada orang sepatutnya paksa u to be patriotic pun. Ur a god damn gov servant assign to serve the public. Get off ur high horse.

To be honest even if you're educated in Sinkie land its impossible not to understand basic Malay if you really stay in Malaysia, you can write the whole story in English on what the security guy and the counter lady converse in Malay yet you claimed you don't understand.

If you go to court- you lose there - open shut case.

Got plenty of kids that moved overseas when they were really young and grew up in a household that mainly speaks English.

Met quite a few of them. Heck would even say I'm one of them since ain't fluent in BM.

Always just ask them to speak in BM and ill reply in English
*
Ain't fluent is not the problem.

So did u feel offended?
Did u feel discriminated?

No right?

Diskriminasi datang dalam banyak bentuk and rupa. Ia serupa "spektrum".

IF YOU FACE DISCRIMINATION, FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHTS. YOU HAVE MADE THINGS MORE COMPLICATED AND DIFFICULT FOR PEOPLE IN SIMILAR SITUATIONS. NOW MORE PEOPLE IN AUTHORITY THINK THEY CAN BULLY THOSE NOT PROFICIENT IN MALAY AS WELL AS DIVORCEES.

These ppl just malas as fcuk and don’t give a damn. Why they still holding on to MY passport is beyond me. You want to be called malaysian but cant speak BM and use studying in spore as an excuse when BM is taught there and considered one of the national language. My daughters studying in Intl school also have to learn BM or can’t graduate in future. What a jibai singkie excuse..anyway why so bodo go UTC do passport when online kan ada? Malay language is indeed very important in Malaysia. Learn how to speak it.
However so, Malaysian standard of government services is poor and rude at large.
Nothing can change and will change as long as it is a race-based intake into SPA.

language is something that if you don't use, as in converse, it'll die or fade away - we know this and yet many here think all of us speak BM in our daily life - we don't la mangkoks!
get a grip of that
if you got no one to talk to except for some rude officer in say,,,,every 5 years or so, we can then more or less deduce exactly the kind of predicament our aunty/daughter is in

and how is that this proficiency of BM is suddenly now a sign of how malaysian you are - walao you ppl all really something wei
but this is apparently the direction the country is heading

BM is important yes, there's no denying to that, especially so if one plans to stay and live here.
BM is easy uh......for those of you that have already known it of cos - goes without sayin
if from small you're not accustomed to the language, expect if to be somewhat French, you may prolly understand, but to converse fully, requires some basic command of the language.

Some of these malay language proponents are so entitled. You want people to respect and speak your language than be an excellent bangsa. The japs, chinese, koreans are proud of their language bcoz of the achievements they have shown and proven. Respect is earned

use the google translate app next time and type what you want to say, it can even say it out loud for you, and also just forge an oku card (for mute people) and show it to them, no need to even open mouth.

maybe even can jump queue and get faster service, do for all your Malaysian family, I assume most/all cannot speak the national language.

Honestly, I went to government agencies myself and my Bahasa is bahasa baku. The officers are used to native Malays which are already mixed in with (god knows where) wordings. Thank God they didnt scold me for not knowing BM

We can do both really. I don't know about the girl but from what I understand she studied in Singapore, but she lives in JB. I think she still oughts to know Malay since she lives in JB her whole life.

But we can't excuse the officer for acting like an ass. Frankly speaking, we see this way too common. This is not the first time. Not just language issues. We see this with cloth issues too.

The officer is an idiot! But to not know malay as a Malaysian is shameful!

Come in! Even Bangla can learn some Malay in a few months being in Malaysia.

Imagine an Angmo born in China complaining that they don’t want to entertain him in English in his country. Sounds stupid right?

I kinda disagree, my privileges as a Malaysian are not determined by whether I know BM or not, if I am a citizen, then I should be able to get a passport, an IC, etc.

Do IRB tax me based on my knowledge of BM (no because the tax laws are not made like that, same argument - is passport/IC eligibility based on mastery of BM or based on citizenship/PR status?)? If govt can tax me, then govt should provide services due to me as a taxpayer and citizen.
*
is passport/IC eligibility based on mastery of BM or based on citizenship/PR status?)
The answer is YES for citizenship application by PR or Foreigner

that applying Malaysia citizen , one of requirements: can converse and understand Malay

You’re born and raised in malaysia by biological Malaysian parent, so you have so called ā€œPrivilegeā€ even though you can’t speak Malay

TS, i am sympathetic to your situation but my sincere advise is perhaps to attend Bahasa Malaysia speaking courses

as long as you want to hold a Malaysian Ic/Passport and don't speak the language, you're going to face such problems and worse in future

and just to digfrss, if the situation was a USA citizen wanting to renew the passport but can't speak English cos he was educated in Mexico as a child and grew up his adulthood in Mexico, the USA citizen would face similar situations as you or worse

not judging but merely suggesting a long term solution for you and your child

and the immigration officer was just following the rules when she asked for the detail document such as divorce papers

they need to be sure everything is in order cos a lapse could have happened when the passport was issued so each renewal must also follow the protocol

you're a good man to take care of a child that is not biological related to you

Generational trauma from decades of discrimination and unfair policies led by a Malay-majority gov (UMNO) is not something to overlook. I can't count the no. of times I've met uncles and aunties who want nothing to do with anything Malay because experiences such as May 13th. 2/6

So what does someone who has been mistreated/ignored/judged/attacked/discriminated against do? In a country like Malaysia, where racial privilege is very real and retaliation is not really in the cards of the minorities, they retreat into the safety of their own spaces. 3/6

Generational trauma like this is not easy to heal from, and ministers who fail to understand this, but rather double down without empathy, is part of the problem. Of course, the current gen has it in their cards to step up and move on, but it's not an overnight thing. 4/6

Some aren't fluent because of a lack of access to learning. Some simply choose to disengage simply because they don't see a future for themselves here. Regardless, no one should be mistreated for the languages they speak. Yelling at them about it isn't the answer either. 5/6

As usual, everything is so intertwined here that no single solution will solve this, and this is a mere symptom of the larger issues.

When šŸ‡²šŸ‡¾ becomes a country where unity is built on acceptance rather than tolerance, perhaps we may see a way out of this mess. 6/6

In Singkapoh, the students can choose either mandarin or malay as the second language.
Sure Mandarin is better choice la.. even the Maleis are sending their children to study in chinese school.

Well serious what a useless excuse studied in sg since young--- BM is a national language - if you don't know then you go learn before you apply passport. Even bangla and nepal guard - less than 6 month can learn BM already. Disgrace. I know many Singaporean born and raise there Non-Muslims also can speak BM.

I believe there was a case before they caught China citizen try to apply for Malaysian passport, right?

With this surprising high amount of people can't speak malay suddenly pop up now kind of abit suspicious. Or it just show how weak our education system is. Dont even need to master sastera, just basic communication BM.

However the current climate is going overboard. Now in social media there are those mocking who are actually making an effort to speak it.

We also have mandatory English classes in schools, and yet the trope of being unable to read or speak it fluently still persists.
