hi people. this is an experience from a proton owner of 7.
we had 7 experience with different proton cars that we own no less then a year. currently we own 5 proton cars. we had another 2 previously but it is sold. overall, we already use 3 V6 (2 yr, 6 yr and 7 yr), 1 iswara (9 yr), 1 wira (8 yr), 1 neo (2 yr) and 1 satria (1yr). dont ask me how i can afford and why need that many cars. but i just want to tell my experience and problem i had with it, and i like u guys to hear from a genuine proton user who had used it for a very long time from different model (except for the 3 v6).
i am NOT a proton salesman, or work with proton before. i am also not a car dealer or a proton fanatics. my full time profession is system administrator. i am here to share my wonderful and the not so wonderful experience with proton and comparison with other cars which i owned before.
below is my rating on my CURRENTLY owned proton. 1 to 10, 10 being the best.
1) two perdana V6. registered 2001, and another 2002. mil. 110k and 160k respectively. we abused the 2002 V6 now instead of the 2001. somehow, we feel the 2002 v6 is better. the former is sold and buyer confirm once loan approved somewhere next week. i am keeping the latter V6 for LIFE!

. but overall perdana V6 performance:-
comfort - 7.
looks - 6
driving around in town - 3
driving at highway - 7
driving in an abusive way - 3
problem cause? - hmm. why all the lights in the compartment in all my v6 burned?
maintenance - average.
petrol - mahal
speed - so so.
pick up - slow
other comment - automatic transmission is jumpy.
overall - 5
2) Wira sedan 1.8(a) DOHC 16v. registered 2000. its NOT the one with tiang gol at the back. mil 140k. i have a perfect service record and maintenance on this guy which i keep and update since it roled out from shah alam. i will update my servicing, parts and maintenance cost later here when i get home.
comfort - 6.
looks - 4
driving around in town - 5
driving at highway - 7
driving in an abusive way - 6
problem cause? - many, some are tolerable, some makes me sick. altenator problem, broken radiator, failed air cond system, jammed valved, overheating, failed water pump, failed signal system, failed battery. failed central locking system, cracked front window, all in 8 years.
maintenance - ouch!
petrol - average
speed - 140hp. not bad huh.
pick up - very good. nice torque.
other comment - nice overall car except when problems occur. practical, since it is a sedan, and also got power and give u a nice low rpm at 130km/h.
overall - even though got many problems, i prefer this car way more then the V6 or neo. overall 6.
3) satria neo 1.6(a). this one bought 2 years ago if not mistaken. milage 17k.
comfort - 3.
looks - 6
driving around in town - 5
driving at highway - 7
driving in an abusive way - 7. cilok with this car really nice worrr. can take sharp corner at high speed nicely.
problem cause? - stupid aircon knob suddenly aircorn blow at max power when it is turn off. took 6 mth for ths SC to fix the stuff.
maintenance - average.
petrol - average
speed - this campro engine is slower then my wira 1.8. maybe the CPS version is better
pick up - same like wira.
other comment - i am 5'11. the seat is too small for me. like bucket seat. i hate driving this car.
overall - 4, unless when u want to abuse. then i give it a 7.
4) proton satria 1.5(a). mil 44k. bought it second hand 1 year ago. 1st owner bought it in 2004.
comfort - 7. (suprise eh)
looks - 4
driving around in town - 7
driving at highway - 3
driving in an abusive way - 8. cilok with this feels better then the neo.
problem cause? - faulty indicator on the temprature, central locking is acting in a funny way.
maintenance - dirt cheap.
petrol - cheap
speed - sucky like hell, since it is a 1.5a, its a noisy engine.
pick up - like turtle.
other comment - i like this car better then the others now. if i were to drive around town, i will definetely choose this car over others since it is small. parking easy maaa.
overall - 6
i also owned an AUDI A4 1.8T (just bought) and just 4 month ago sold my subaru forester 4wd turbo. just telling so u guys dont think i am a proton freak.

. the audi is a baby. all other cars now sleep outside. the subaru forester is an awesome car. but it had its fair share of other problems like power window, suddenly refuse to start, etc.
previously i owned an iswara 1.5a bought it in 1990 and sold 9 years later. we had a good 150k on it. i had a fair experience on a kancil 850a (2 years) and a honda accord which i used for 11 years and did a nice 220k milage. not to offend the perodua fans out here but, the kancil 850(a) is shitty!
proton is OK. it has his share of maki hamun from me but many times it is also life saver. the problem with proton is also a problem with other cars. for example, i had a power window problem with the wira ONCE, but NOT with the other proton which i owned. i had to change the whole bloody power window system, but then again, i changed it after i abused the car for 7 years. i also had similar window problem with the subaru forester. one day while driving the subaru, while approaching the LDP tol, i push the power window button, but the window didnt go down, but i smell something burn.
my problems comes mostly with the wira, but i also had similar problems with my honda and subaru as well. i especially had problems with the car when it already did 3 years and above. but later on when i see that what problem i had with my proton also occur with my other japanase cars, i conclude that its not actually a problem, but its part and parcel of a car maintenance. the problem i had with the wira also i face with my honda accord. once i maintain, repair and changed the system, the problem when away, and the car works just fine. i am expecting the V6, the neo and satria to act the same way once it hit 5 to 8 years.
now wait and see what will happen with my audi in 5 years. many already say this baby also got gearbox problem. but since i just had this car, we have to wait and see.
all in all, i will never stop from buying proton. (or audi, heh).
