Hi Just to share. Anyone wanting to dial maxis fiber home with a custom router like TPLink etc but still need to maintain telephone line (VOIP) can do this :

1) Set maxis Thompson Gateway to Bridge Mode + Voip
2) Program your custom router to Pppoe and key in your maxis fiber username password.
3) Connect both WAN ports of Custom Router and Maxis Thompson router to a 5port network switch.
4) Connect the switch to the BTU Lan 2(Huawei or Alcatel)

This way, your custom router will dial the Internet connection and all port forwarding and other management is done with it.

Maxis Thompson router will just function as sip gateway for your telephone line to work.

Try it and report here if it works.

P/s: There are ways to modify BTU by adjusting vlan tagging but I think it only works for Huawei ones. For Alcatel the method I propose works best. Try for yourself smile.gif

I have been using this method for past several months. It works well on a Technicolor TG784n v3. However, TG784n v1 does not have bridge mode + voip. My parents home is still using a v1 modem.

Does anyone know how to modify vlan tagging on a fiberhome BTU?? I have the password to telnet it, but couldn't figure out how to modify the vlan tagging via cmd. If possible, I would like to avoid chaining from BTU -> technicolor -> my router. I would prefer direct connect from my router to technicolor

I have seen some guide around on how to do that. But it will only work if your BTU is Huawei. For Alcatel I think no luck.

Yes, you have two public fixed IPs.

Say your fixed IP is 123.123.123.123, which is your router IP; your user IP is 123.123.123.124 / subnet 255.255.255.252 by default.

If you have more IPs, then the subnet value is lower.

Hi boss , this is exactly what i want. but my situation is i get the fixed IP is 123.123.123.123 for router , but i don't have user IP is 123.123.123.124, i suspected is the given maxis router can't support this kind of feature? or because my fixed IP package is belongs to " special offer price RM499 30Mbps package"? now my maxis router all 4 LAN port can be used, but the obtained IP will be 192.168.xx.xx ( not public IP) , my TM modem is an old unifi modem which is white color one, the weird thing is maxis router connect to TM modem by using LAN port no 3, usually should be using Lan port No 2, but i got no response if plug to port no 2....

is your router same like me? i think that router maybe is suit for home user, not for company use?

Why you want external IP on your PC? 192.168.x.x is the internal NATed IP address.

If you want to host anything you can just setup port forwarding.

for my server use loh. i will be more easier for me if there is a public IP for server, especially my server is linux base which is using iptable to do routing, somemore performing 4 virtualization.......

I actually managed to do away with the Thompson router and used an Asus wifi router instead.

I used this method since I have the Huawei HG850a BTU to get the Huawei to handle VOIP.

https://forum.lowyat.net/topic/2710206

Worked for about close to a year but somehow the VOIP wasn't functioning anymore. No idea what changed on Maxis side since I did not change anything.

I got fed up going back and forth with Maxis tech and insisted that I have my set up back using the Thompson router. I wasn't going to do additional work and at the end I got a Cisco SPA122 ATA to handle the VOIP connection. Never had a problem since. wink.gif

If you want fast and stable wifi connection, ditch the Thompson router.

This happen since last two weeks until now.

I just can keep restart both BTU and router hope to get back the normal speed but at the end still the same result.

Hi bro, if you had subscribed for a few static IP ranges, you would have obtained 2 sets of Static IPs (Public WAN & Public LAN)

Public WAN would have a /30 subnet (255.255.255.252) so there are only 2 usable IPs. One assigned to your router's WAN interface, and one configured at the ISP next hop gateway.

E.g
1.1.1.1 -> MAXIS Gateway IP
1.1.1.2 -> Router WAN IP obtain after dialing PPPoE

Public LAN would usually start with a /29 subnet (255.255.255.248), so there are about 6 usable IPs. It will typically be a very different range from the Public WAN IP

E.g
20.20.20.1
20.20.20.2
20.20.20.3
20.20.20.4
20.20.20.5
20.20.20.6

You would configure 20.20.20.1 to the LAN port facing your LAN network. Then you assign an available IP to your web server such as 20.20.20.2. Hence, your server IP config would be:

IP: 20.20.20.2
Mask: 255.255.255.248
GW: 20.20.20.1

If you perform a trace route to the internet, the result would be like:
1st Hop: 20.20.20.1 -> Router LAN Port
2nd Hop: 1.1.1.1 -> ISP Gateway

Your router will have dynamic routing so there is no need to specify static routes, since your WAN interface & LAN interface are directly connected.
