eat is something very subjective to people..i see some people cook themselves and can control the budget well.
while some people 1 day no eat atas place restaurant will die.. shakehead.gif

most of the time it is depend on one's desire..while sometime depend on your colleagues as well..if they everyday lunch eat atas place..either join them, or leave them  sad.gif

Agree!! Eating is really subjective... to your colleagues. Whether they always or used to go to those high class places to eat or they don't mind to eat in food courts. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif Luckily mine is the more to the later one. Good thing.

My normal meal hovers around 2.7 to 7 depends on my colleagues' mood biggrin.gif

Hello guys,
I got offered (confirmed) job in Singapore with start date January 2015 and I'm in doubt whether to proceed or not. For I have no idea what it would be like there.

The offer sound like this:
Basic : $3500 + $150 phone allowance + 3% - 7% commission based on target, reimbursement transportation & other claimable misc
Work hours is 9am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday & 10am to 1.30pm Saturday
Company: SPH

My concern is: $3500 monthly, is it enough to survive?

I've read this thread partly and found that a decent single room is already costing $800 - thats already 20% of my salary
I can't imagine what else is there to consider.
And the work hours is kinda bit too much. I don't know, what do you guys think?

My current package here in Malaysia:
More or less RM 5000 take home monthly, not much but considering I am home that's enough for me.
Monthly my expenses are rather same thus I would have left around RM 1500 till my next salary drawing every month.

So I still am doubting, whether I should take the offer or not. Your advise?  notworthy.gif
*
What you need to consider is the savings you still have each month. If you spend $1500 all inclusive each month, you still have $2000 savings every month before considering your commission thingy. That alone is already the sum of your salary in M'sia. It is really subjective as not everyone will like the life over here and eventually going back to M'sia.

RM5000 with RM1500 left every month? So you're spending RM3500 each month? Car loan/house loan or anything that you have to pay? RM3500 each month is really a huge sum leh...

How long is your lunch break? IINM, for EP holder, maximum 8 hours (official) working hours each day, 44 hours each week (5.5 days) *but of course practically, always over one la* If your lunch break is 1.5 hour then ok la. If 1 hour then it is actually illegal to ask you work over 8 hours each day biggrin.gif

Is their offer final? If I am you, I'll contact them and ask whether the offer is negotiable or not.

If you choose to leave your current job, always leave with good terms. If your new job is not suitable, you can always fallback to your old job.

Yeah, I have 1 condo & paying for 2 cars, one for my own and another for my parents. so RM 3500 is the right amount I spent.
Commission is vary i assumed so can't really count that. lunch break I have yet to ask. Thanks for pointing that out.

I did, I asked for at least $3900 but was denied. They did however promise me an increment of $250 after probation, but that is 6 months later.
I actually need to make decision by end of the month so I can tender my resignation properly. sigh~

You should take the offer. I take it the SPH office you'll be working at is at Bishan area.

SPH is a relatively good company. Not bad bonus as well. Location of the office is good for people who wants to save money. If you get a room some where north, past AMK area, you can get a nice common room for SGD 500. This brings down your expenses by quite a bit as you're staying far from the city area.

Minus SG expenses, you'll probably save a minimum of at least SGD 1000-1500, with some trips back to MY for the first year. Usually a person's first year expenses are higher as if you're not familiar with SG, you tend to spend a bit more money. you'll probably be able to save more than SGD 1500 after 6 months.

SPH's increment each year is not that bad as well.

Enough to survive but little or no savings. If you are able to save substantially in msia then forget SG.

actually, if u work in sg, u might not nid the car anymore, which can reduce ur burden and left you some spare cash..

sg food in hawker center is cheaper compare to in KL..but if u eat fast food + restaurant..then at the end of the day still same..

saving wise is subject to one capability of saving...cuz sg is an easy place to spend morning.night life la..food la..

You can bring anything that isn't illegal. For duties/tax/etc, I recall the agent who handled my relocation last time also applied for duties/gst or whatever waiver to customs dept so I didn't need to pay any taxes. Don't know the details though.

SG gov controls this Re-entry Permit(REP). That allows Singapore PR to re-enter to SG as a PR...now its a 5 years validity..used to be 5 or 10 years validity. If you remain outside of Singapore after the REP has expired, you can no longer return as a Singapore PR( fill up the white card). There's no min/max period that you can be away. But if you want to renew your REP(another 5 yeards), some say you better be working in SG for AT LEAST 1 year before your REP expires. Else you may not get your REP renewed

My parents and siblings have been "relocated" back to Malaysia for more than 10 years now. REP renewal no problem. They maintain a SG income and pay taxes to support the country.

the stuff that you can have legally in msia that cant bring to sg is probably just dairy products, meat products & chewing gum. The rest should be ok.

Hehe its ok. You have to start somewhere right. Not everyone is so lucky to start with 3 restaurant food per day. Dining in atas place don't guarantee gutter-oil-free food too. Just take care your health eating those fast food if you don't want to sponsor the doctor's mercs when you are old. Get some fruits or something.

Some suggestions. I came here as a student so I did all these to survive on my 3600 per year scholarship allowance. That is 450 per month minus away the 4 months holiday in Malaysia.

Home cook food maybe true but you forget to mention staying alone in a bungalow and drive 7 series to class. Always troll people like you very poor like that.
