3 yrs experience consider as experienced hires i think? yet cant find a banking job.all ask the same question:do you have rights to work in sg? ...
*
Now SG has turned anti foreigners.
They are crying mother and father becuase Pinoy in Singapore are celebrating national day in Singapore.
So of course the government is feeling the heat and therefore have to do something about it, especially the banking sector which is dominated primarily by foreigners

Any investment bankers or hedge fund managers working in Singapore now? Wanna know more about their culture as I heard it differentiates from the western countries very much.
*
Long hours, highly stressful environment, very political, double standards - if you're white and can KC with mgmt - you're ok. If you're asian and cannot KC with mgmt, high risk of getting laid off, shitty pay and bonus (if you're below VP or equivalent position), zero job security - hire fire as they please, very result oriented and unforgiving - miss your targets - bye-bye.

Barclays just layed-off some more IB people....hoorah! flex.gif

Are you talking about IBs in Singapore or western side?
*
IB's in Singapore la.
Why would I be talking about IB's in western world in a Singapore forum.
To be more specific foreign IB in SG.
IB in Singapore has never really recovered post 2008

I'm just curious why would white be KC ing with management. They don't need to!
*
They still need political mileage. Just bcoz they are white does not mean they get political mileage automatically. Afterall there are so many other ang moh in SG. These are not yr average 5k-10k positions. These are well sought after bulge bracket jobs. Many in their home country would give an arm to be in SG earning that kinda money. Esp if its a european bank and with all the shit going on in europe.

No. I do not feel sad for them. Its part and parcel of IB life. When times are good these guys gets paid bonus by the hundreds of thousands and for some millions. So I do not feel happy or sad for them. Its all part of the cycle.

Most feel helpless, demotivated and depressed becuase they cannot leave due to the bond.
Unless they have enough money to pay to break the bond la.

Wow, 2-4k is kinda low. But I guess the same thing does happen in Malaysia as well. But 7-15k is kinda attractive for me. Back in 2010 I did tried to apply to Singapore. Send in many application but none came back. Thus I'm worried is it because I only have an accounting degree from UTAR thus not favorable by SG employers. Subsequently got another job in MY till now. Now I'm looking at SG again.
*
Actually it also depends on company. Some small or mid chinaman company will only pay up to 5k-6k or less for managerial level. On the other end of the scale, exec can easily earn 7-12k in MNC in a regional role or banking.

Same industry, different specialty. Similar company types. Among the specialties, the one in SG is supposed to pay the highest (industry norm).

I'm well aware you can't compare figures directly, even after tax what the Australian graduate can get is ridiculously higher than any of the grads in neighbouring countries (with a few exceptions). Just that I had been expecting a bit more from the SG side (to maybe be on par with what a Malaysian in KL would get).

*
No. I disagree. It really depends on your lifestyle and how you choose to live.
For example if you choose to shop for branded stuff, eat out every meal, party all weekend long when working and living in SG while you cook at home and buy generic products/items in Australia, then of course you can safe alot in Australia.

However if you work in SG spend moderately and live in JB, I think you can have a WAY.....better lifestyle than you can ever dream of in Australia, even with a much higher wage in Australia. Why? Multipler effect. It really depends on one's choice of living his/her life.

I heard that someone here working in banking industry and manage to jump from 2k starting salary to 100k pa in just 3 years. Mind to teach or share your journey?

Seriously that could be very helpful to people like me who just join the bank and having a personal banker role.

Willing to treat a meal(food court, I only could afford that)

Thanks in advance, sifu

3 years to 100k p.a. salary while not a myth is extremely difficult to achieve. The only 2 successful methods which i have seen to achieve that is either a hotshot trader or a well connected private banker. Oh, also possible if you are in a tier 1 investment bank i.e. goldman and these people don't start at sgd2k for sure. One common trait you will notice is that these people are extremely smart and present extremely well able to rub shoulders with the whose who without feeling out of depth. Most are also ivy league unis maybe except for the private bankers. But private bankers must have the connections and most come from well to do families anyway. As for the rest of the banking sector, all myths.

I'm also interested to learn more, seems like banking sector in Sg attracts the cream of the crop, while engineering is where those who cannot make it in banking go to.

Any chance for an engineering grad working in a local sg company to join the banks and make 100k in 3 years? Or how long would it take?
*
Hard truth: No chance. Stop obsessing about sgd100k pay package. Most bankers don't get paid that much even after 15-20 years. Some won't even hit half that amount in their entire banking career. Stop comparing yourself to the cream of the crop (unless you are one, in which case you won't be "wondering" anyways). If you ever wondered if you have the chops to earn sgd100k a year in 3 years, the answer is you don't. Coz people who do don't wonder. They know they can and they go out and do it.

Oh yeah? Jual mahal these singaporeans employers, huh? Have such a talented foreigner like you and how dare they don't hire you! They should be thankful that they even breath the same air as you! Damn them! Get a job in msia instead! Teach them a lesson and show them what they are missing out! Make them beg you to hire you thereafter!

You can google more for it but in summary, firms must give priority to Singaporeans before hiring foreign talent eg advertising for two weeks to get singaporeans before opening to foreing talent.

Announced last year.

I wonder does this also apply to PR hmm.gif

Hope you guys can help me out here. Is Accountant in demand in Spore job market ? Thanks.
*
Demand is there. But salary difference is like heaven and earth. A regional accountant in a well known mnc can command up to sgd8k. While a local chinaman company can go as low as sgd1.8k.

Hi Sean, does this system of two salary scales of hiring apply to your company alone or most companies practice that ? Thanks.
*
I think you should worry less about the salary and worry more about actually getting the job and keeping it. Competition is intense esp if you are not pr/singaporean. Singapore is no longer the hub for tier 2 talents like it was before. Today even the very top talents are seriously considering relocating to SG due to its political stability (unlike hk), its world class infra, transparency, efficiency and great living standards.

QUOTE(datdude @ Nov 12 2014, 04:13 PM)
Hello guys,
I got offered (confirmed) job in Singapore with start date January 2015 and I'm in doubt whether to proceed or not. For I have no idea what it would be like there.

The offer sound like this:
Basic : $3500 + $150 phone allowance + 3% - 7% commission based on target, reimbursement transportation & other claimable misc
Work hours is 9am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday & 10am to 1.30pm Saturday
Company: SPH

My concern is: $3500 monthly, is it enough to survive?

I've read this thread partly and found that a decent single room is already costing $800 - thats already 20% of my salary
I can't imagine what else is there to consider.
And the work hours is kinda bit too much. I don't know, what do you guys think?

My current package here in Malaysia:
More or less RM 5000 take home monthly, not much but considering I am home that's enough for me.
Monthly my expenses are rather same thus I would have left around RM 1500 till my next salary drawing every month.

So I still am doubting, whether I should take the offer or not. Your advise?  notworthy.gif
*
Enough to survive but little or no savings. If you are able to save substantially in msia then forget SG.
