Read in Appleinsider that MacBook will be out on April 19. That's 4 more days to go. I so cant wait for this item to be released. I just hope that this is true.

damn expensive = MacBook Pro lor....

for the record

PPC-based PowerBook > Intellified MacBook Pro
PPC-based iBook > Intellified MacBook

so what the threadstarter meant was MacBook aka Intel iBook... which is not even launched yet....

indeed...lotsa ppl confused..

anyways to those who are still confused...
MacBook Pro != MacBook

which is exactly different like:

PowerBook != iBook

however..

MacBook is equivalent to iBook..MacBook is the intel based 'ibook', just that it does not have the word 'pro' hanging to it ..

anyways.. here's the link for the appleinsider article...(hope it's true)

Nah I don't think they're confused, they just saw the word "MacBook" and jumped to reply, which is what most people do on this forum anyway.

most ppl would spend more for the sake of using OSX and to escape the Windows world...

however, spending so much just for the sake of running Windows... blink.gif blink.gif might as well use the same amount of money to custom-built your dream rig....

MacBook Anticipation

Monday April 17, 2006 07:45 AM EST

Mac News
The wait for the revised Intel iBook (aka MacBook) continues, alongside speculation about the release date of the MacBook. Several readers have pointed out analyst speculation that the Intel iBook could be released as soon as tomorrow. This would be on the eve of Apple's Q2 2006 Financial Results.

If that date falls through, according to reports, internal CPU sales goals at retail Apple Stores have been increased substantially starting in May. These estimates suggest Apple is expecting a boost to sales for their CPUs in the next four weeks.

The most recent reports have claimed that the 13.3" Intel MacBook is in production with target release dates ranging from May to June.

is that true?

*nod nod* it might start out a lil more expensive here before they think of phasing out the iBooks.

Q2 sounds like mid-2006 to me. rclxm9.gif

Dammit just release it, now here's one loyal mac user running out of patience!! Been waiting for a 13.3" MacBook for my sister before having to settle to with VAIO SZ, which cost equally the same as MacBook Pro - now who says using Windows is cheap? To get a reliable machine running crappy OS, there's still a price to pay tongue.gif

Well, I was thinking about what Apple would put in them new MacBooks. Here's my predictions:

13" MacBook Core Solo
1.5 GHz Intel Core Solo
512 MB of RAM
60 GB HD
Combo drive
13" widescreen display
1 inch thick and 3.9 lbs
$799

13" MacBook Core Duo
1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo
512 MB RAM
80 GB HD
SuperDrive
Same weight, thickness, and display as Core Solo model
$999

15" MacBook Core Duo
1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo
512 MB RAM
80 GB HD
SuperDrive
15" widescreen display (same as 15" MacBook Pro)
1 inch thick and 5 lbs
$1199

All models would feature 2 USB 2.0 ports and 1 FireWire 400 port, Intel GMA950 graphics, AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth, Sudden Motion Sensor, and Front Row with Apple Remote.

Available in white or black to match your iPod. A 13" SuperDrive Madonna Special Edition in pink with Madonna's signature bundled with a matching pink 1 GB iPod nano would also be available to coincide with Madonna's Confessions Tour (which Apple is co-sponsoring).

Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets for May 9th! thumbup.gif

i doubt the low-end MacBook will be selling at $799....

remember that this is the price of a high-end Mac Mini, and the low-end iBook goes higher than that.... and rumors did have it that the MacBook is slightly more expensive than the current iBooks....

Well then it's probably a good idea to spend less time on forum and more on studies.

By the way, that was an atomic bomb, NOT nuclear. You really should spend more time to study. wink.gif

With the specs, it is quite disappointed. It is more like a low end laptop with Apple logo. Furthermore, the black is easily scratch (maybe), graphic card is integrated and low resolution display. I was thinking something more from Macbook. But what the heck, it is Apple and OSX and it is black!

I've read somewhere in MacWorld in words of Apple that the 13" MBs are aimed at replacing the 12" PB as well....

so that means there's no 12" MBPs in the future....? unsure.gif unsure.gif

How can you compare a macbook pro with a macbook?!

4k is expensive? 8k or 10k for pro is consider cheap ? with that spec?

btw, the tech spec up... its 2.36KG... i was hoping its around 2kg... another 300g added... i guess for that wide screen

4k+ is alright i guess... looks good too.. black and white.. but i find that the black one looks funny... like very cheapskate like that.. like those IBM.. very 'lou sui'... ahaha..

MBP of course yeng laa... but is it worth paying 7k more to have the yeng?? or is the apple logo on your laptop enough already?? unless of course you're using the MBP for final cut pro or \logic pro or even aperture in front of other people.. then only yeng...if i see people use MBP just for Microsoft Office and check mail , i sure kutuk wan...tongue.gif

Anyone know when macbook will be available at malaysia? Black color is cool although pricey.

USD1099 for Dual core 1.8 processor, 512MB DDR2 ram, 60GB sata HDD, BT 2.0 with webcam(iSight), i think is a good price.

There are always people complaining about the prices and nitpicking this and that because they couldn't afford one. tongue.gif

Anyway, just so you know, photoshop elements runs a tad faster on my macbook pro than my powerbook, and it'll be even faster when the universal version comes out. So yeah, forget the old ibook, pick up your phone and order a macbook now. biggrin.gif

i thought they said the adobe applications ran betta on the powerbook in comparison to the macbook pro.. huh.gif something bout Adobe not tweaking the applications suited for the new Intel-Mac products yet.

anyway, if all you're gonna do is graphic work like photoshop etc.. i suppose the macbook would be a good investment compared to the ibook. just don't hope to do much gaming on the onboard gfx. tongue.gif

powerbooks are soon to be phased out. macasia's website removed them liao.

how different is the new macbook's keyboard in comparison with the ibook..?

It's pissing me off that the MacBook gets the "place two fingers on trackpad and click button for secondary click" feature that the current 17" MBP has, but not on the 15" MBP. Grrrr... Where's my software update Apple?!?!

you can't really be chasing afteer technology.... especially when Apple switched to the fast lane.... that's the reason i prefer the PowerPC platform instead; slow but obvious upgrades....

anyway, if it's upgradable/enable via firmware, I'm sure you can hack if you want to.... brows.gif

PPC was the reason why I noticed myself using my VAIO and PC desktop more and more in the past even though Windows was not my thing, but it offered speed, and speed is of utmost importance to my work. I just couldn't deal with the kind of sluggishness PPC had caused OS X. But now Intel changes everything and I don't see any reason to use Windows anymore, well except for Oblivion. PPC was the bottleneck that was slowing down OS X, it had its glorious days but it has to go now.

Anyway yeah, obviously the 15" MBP knows when you put two fingers on the trackpad, it's just a software update away to enable that feature. I'm sure Apple will include this in future updates, they might have overlooked this little thing with the launching of their new MacBook and the new flagship store on fifth avenue. I guess I have to stick with a mouse for now. Oh yeah, where's the bluetooth Mighty Mouse stevie? biggrin.gif

Have a walk around lowyat, show the shop staffs macbook's spec and ask them for similar PC laptop, see it for yourself what are prices like... Decent brands like Toshiba or HP will easily cost around the same, but with uglier design (puke).

Macs are priced the same everywhere in the country, with only very very minimal discount given by individual reseller - so don't have to think too much, just buy from the shop you had the best talk with biggrin.gif Apple's warranty is not provided by Apple Malaysia, instead it's a worldwide warranty that works the same everywhere in the world. So if you buy yours in Malaysia and one day (within the warranty period) it throws tantrum just send it to the nearest Apple Store/Shop, KL or London.

well, reasons for Applecare plan purchase afaik..

- extended warranty just incase.
- warranty is international so any country with an Apple centre will help you.
- when you sell 2nd hand and u have the plan, u fetch a slightly better price.

that's that i guess..

You can't squeeze much out of it really, 20-30 minutes tops. You're definitely gonna need an extra battery if you're always on the go. Does anyone know of a charging dock for the MacBook Pro battery?

It's about 8 times faster than my 1ghz iBook.
..that is not "just similar".

It runs Microsoft Access and many many games too (via bootcamp)

My humble iBook is still fine for wordprocessing/surfing/ viewing photos...

just when it comes to photoediting... rclxub.gif scripts take forever to run.

Depends what people are looking for i guess. A lady who only needs a computer to surf and type documents will probably feel no speed difference between my notebook and the (8x faster) Macbook.

As Ethanius said, the slow speed of the PPC apples is bearable. I still get my pictures processed, and all my assignments done..all on 256mb of RAM.

Applying USM + Levels Adjustment + etc took about 15min total for the photo below.

Bootcamp to WinXP - Just think of a PC laptop with these specs, how do you think it will run? It's the same with Macbook, no slow downs cuz it's basically dual booting it and run natively, not emulation or what so ever...

lag of a game doesn't always have something to do with your machine..but an article once said for RPGs, more RAM is good and of course, a better gfx card.

overall, i'd try replacing the 2 sticks of 256 to a stick of 512 if I can. Or if i have the money, chuck a 1GB in straight away. tongue.gif

That graphics card can't take wow ...You can still play , dont expect stunning 3D Visuals , as its just it would be okay. I heard that Apple tweaked Intel's GMA 950...to give some boost..Not tooo sure about that as well

Yep , you can run boot camp..Upgrade to 1GB and you're set

1.25gb should be RM750 (non DDR. 256+1024)

512+512 DDR how much i wonder... (but wouldnt make much sense cuz youll have two spare 256 sticks.

Just wondering, if I use Macbook to connect to external monitor and boost the resolution to maximum (1900 x 1200), will it affect the performance compare to lower resolution?

the Macbook PRO suffered from that problem. It is made by Quanta.

The Macbook is made by a different company.. "Asus", as you may have heard, is quite a big name in notebook manafacturing.

Those photos were from the MACBOOK service manual. Look at the screenshot itself and you'll see that it's not a MBP.

And it looks like it's happening in assembly as well.

I agree with fly. I read a review my friend passed to me of this guy in the US that's tested the MacBook. One of the cons he listed was the heat problem on the MacBook.

afaik, Mac portables have always had a heat issue at the bottom because of the battery. but now since it's the cpu.. it's bad.

Let's get the terminology correct.

DDR RAM will be DoubleDataRate (DDR) regardless of whether you run equal sticks or not.

It just won't run Dual Channel.

Sotong...
if u check macnn forums or etc, wat they say is the heat's frm the processor... probable cause is the thermal paste they apply on the processor... may be too much of paste on the processors adi...

dunno bout the battery wor... but historically, macs do run abit hotter wan rite?

That's if we run it in the ever-hot-and-humid Malaysia, in cold countries or during winter like where I am now, it's damn good a warm plate to heat up my cold palms tongue.gif

This is running away from the curren topic a lil, but does anyone know the type of RAM that's in the MacBook..? A UK site that sells RAM online suggests the:

DDR2 PC2-5300 . CL=5 . UNBUFFERED . NON-ECC . DDR2-667 . 1.8V . 128Meg x 64
(whatever that means. tongue.gif i just cut and paste the description.. biggrin.gif)

but thats going for 120pounds for 1 stick of 1Gig..

I checked with MacAsia in regards to "up-ing" the RAM from the standard 2 sticks of 256 (512) to 1Gig (2 sticks of 512) and the cost is just shy of RM1,000..! shocking.gif

Is the RAM specs (PC2-5300) vital to the MacBook..? or can i get a lower spec RAM (PC2-4200 or 3200) and not ruin the MacBook...?

Any thoughts on that? Also, if anyone has a price quote, that would be great too...

you can get lower specs..But it might make your Mac slower or weird..seriously..I dont know why...You might get Kernel Pancis ...etc...In theory its possible

You can get cheap RAMs from UK..If you diy..there are many stores..Just pick a copy of MacWorld Plus or MacWorld , and see it for yourself

12 months installment with interest free is a very good deal.. especially if u can't afford it that moment..

i understand that the RAM itself costs RM1000 rite?

can i purchase it via third party and install it myself w/o voiding warranty?

yes you can (and do pick the right ones, recent Macs are very picky about RAMs), and it won't void your warranty unless you screw something up during installation.... it happened before on the iMacs, users pushed the RAM module so hard that it broke the logic board.... neither the standard warranty nor the ACPPs cover user negligence...

There is a motion sensor called "Sudden Motion Sensor" which is supposed to protect the harddisk upon any "sudden" motion detection, but the tapping thing you mentioned is a hack that made use of the feature and turn it into something cool/fun.

iBook | MacBook

G4 1.42GHz | Core Duo 2.0GHz Δ
5.7 | 29.1 5.1X
SPECint_rate_base2000

i dont understand, why they compare a iBook, which have a 1.42Ghz only with a 2.0 Core Duo?

Why they dont compare iBook/PowerBook with/around 2.0Ghz with 2.0 Core Duo??

because the last revision iBook G4 only reached 1.42GHz maxed while the last revision PowerBook G4 reached 1.67GHz maxed....

both product categories never reach 2.0GHz (supposedly on a G5) because the G5 chips were too hot to fit into a slim form factor such as those laptops above....

EDITED:

even third party G4 processor upgrades peaked only at 1.92GHz....

there's no apple-only-ram because all ram use in mac is the same ram used in pcs.. the different is apple test it on mac and it works so they charge us for the testing, that's why the price for lowyat's ddr2 1gb ram - around rm400 and apple-tested ram - rm1000.. how dare u apple cheat us your loyal customer vmad.gif

Currently I am using Apacer 1gb for my Macbook Pro and tested ok. No problem so far. Is there any concern or performance if I use Apacer rather than Kingston?

brand-wise, I doubt so....

I'm using TwinMOS for my machine well known for its RAM compatibility issue, not a problem.....

Was thinking of getting a MacBook as a cruncher, but seeing those CPU temperatures on load, really scares the hell out of me....

dont think u can do that.....

the closest i can think of is this scenario:

pray hard that ur macbook rosak, send it to applecare....make a SUPER DUPER big fuss out of it until the manager comes out....then the manager says sorry and refund u.........

but i doubt it'll happen...hehe rclxub.gif

why would they wanna ship only 10 units to malaysia????

according to him, i'll have to wait 2 weeks more for the second batch to come...

me mentioned that the 10 units are most probably demo units for the apple centers.......

if u hv a credit card... it can happen...

a note is always check if they can process the 12 mth thingie for your bank's credit card... otherwise, you may be subjected to a 4-5% interest on top of amount charged...

if they hv a tie-up wit ur credit card's bank, then they can handle the installment thingie for u... otherwise, you will need to contact ur bank b4/after purchase (depending on banks) abt converting the purchase to 12 mths...

answered ur question?

I KNOW! Ive read that someone complained to Apple Care and they couldnt do anything about it cause its considered to be a cosmetic issue which isnt covered..man...now im seriously starting to reconsider it...i mean, i know its no big deal but for something like that to pop up after just 2-3 weeks is a lil bad la...who knows WHAT itll look like in a year....

The more i research into the MacBook, the more issues that seem to pop up..first it was the heat (which i got over), then there have been some issues of "whining" and "mooing" (no idea..saw it in an Apple discussion thread), WiFi issues, the MagSafe issue with the MBP (i know..its on the MBP but the MB uses MagSafe as well so one never knows.) and now THIS..?! seriously. Not good. Despite what that nice fellow at Time Magazine said.

Bahir, i cant say much on the cover of Macbook since mine is black macbook... there is no whining or mooning... and in terms of wifi, damn it is so good, can access basically everywhere from my house, compare to my old powerbook (this could be due to wifi extreem card or something like that), magsafe is not an issue coz my battery last for a long time.

so no complain from me.

Gotcha miniacs but i personally cant afford the Black MB..unless there are some serious suggestions or explanations addressing the issue of the discoloration, i might (unfortunately) just get a Dell..

Again, i know its a minor cosmetic issue, but it is a lot of money for something like that..and besides, im man enough to admit the cosmetics played a part in my decision..(the others being GarageBand, built in WiFi,Bluetooth and iSight;DVD Burner, and size and weight.)

Maybank and Affin Bank 4 or 5 % interest

Errr... I went to MacAsia at 1-Utama and they told me that MayBank credit card just charged 2% for the processing fee of the installment plan. How come your interest rate so high wan? blink.gif

Well... The hype is what causes the pain. People can't wait to get their hands on it. So far as I see, the only complaint is discoloration.

No worries mate. wink.gif

I suggested to a friend of mine to maybe check out the serial numbers of the MBs that get released here..like i mentioned, it could be an isolated issue with that one manufacturer, sorta like the "plastic film blocking the air vent" case...

Deadman, would you mind quoting your sister's MB serial number..? and seeing that your the only one so far with the white MB (miniacs punya hitam i think) maybe you can keep us updated on the cosmetics of the white MB..? Sorry for the trouble. cool.gif

I'm tempted to purchase the 2.0 ghz Macbook and maybe throw in an extra 512 worth of RAM (Bringing it to about 1 gig)..... Now, will it be fast enough to run Adobe Premier or Final Cut Pro smoothly?? I want to use it for some small video editing on the go, while my main PC can be used for the heavier stuff......

Anyone??

FYI, there's no Mac version of Premier (latest releases). You have to be contented with Final Cut HD Pro. Im pretty sure the 2GHz Macbook should serve well as a "Mobile & 2nd" workstation. Maybe just on to go rendering to show client on the spot changes. I will not suggest anyone to do full lenght HD content on a laptop. Not to say this is just a macbook. And pls, pusht the RAM to 1GB stick if u planning to do video.

Bump the RAM to at least 1.5GB and then it should be okay. The MacBook should do a good job on this

Well, my main PC is STILL a Windows XP machine....... and planning to switch soon.....

So will probably use the MacBook as my Uni Laptop to do work on. Only thing was dissapointed to see such a low end graphics card inside.....

BTW...... is there any way I can buy compatible MacBook RAM in Low Yat instead of spending even MORE cash at an Apple Center??

It's not even a graphics card per se, but yeah, i'd say go for it. And bump the RAM up to 2GB if you can. It makes a big difference.

Yes you can buy the RAMs and install 'em yourself. Check out compatible RAM HERE. smile.gif

Hey there... was shock shocking.gif to hear that they finally sold the demo set instead.....3 days ago i was at low yat when i saw macbook was on display rclxms.gif ...i got there around 430pm. I quickly ran to the counter and told them i wanted to buy the macbook now. Dissapointedly....the fella said this one is a display set (not for sell) and it's belong to Apple and the last unit just sold to one malay guy... sad.gif (old man...darn!!!!-mind my language tongue.gif) Anyway...the salesman said i can make a booking 10% dwnpayment. Asked me to make my booking at their store...so i went. Then, there is also whereby i saw the guy....their last customer who bought the last unit of macbook. i placed my dwnpayment for 3k instead rm400. So, the ppl said they will call me asap the stock came in. The point is...i've been asking....pleadging....forcing...them to sell the dsplay model to me but still NO! But now you're telling me the display unit is open for sell?????!! Huh....i can'tbelieve this is happen.......n they didn't call me???!! mad.gif cry.gif

I hope the forumer can response in good manner.

I said on Friday I called them and ask them whether they have any macbook available and they said yes, it is in stock for white units. I never say demo unit. I told them I want black unit so I rejected the offer. The black unit is CTO cost about RM7199 which I have also mentioned in the thread. I said nothing about the display / demo unit. I hope this thread is clear for some forumers.

I know i may be barking up the wrong tree here but isnt anyone else worried about the discolouration of the MBs..? I know its merely cosmetic but still....

Those already with MBs, if you dont mind telling, could i know your serial numbers please..? just wondering if it is any different from the ones with the reported problems so far...

man, im seriously getting really anxious.

Bahir,
it sucks, yes... but it's supposedly only happening to a segment of the buyers... and thr's not much been said lately abt the discoloration... bsides, if it were to happen, a non-acetone nail polish remover is able to get rid of the yellow stains... thumbup.gif

actually i'm more chicken shit than u cause i'm totally avoiding this by getting the black one... hehehe... whistling.gif

cool.. thanks..

cos i checked the Apple HK site and for example the 2.0GHZ white is HKD10200
HKD10200 ---> RM4815.04 at exchange rate of HKD1 ----> RM0.472063. that's a saving of almost RM500 when compared to the RM5299 price here or RM5180.47 if u buy from sg (at xchange rate of SGD1--->RM2.30448). Guess HK is one of the cheapest places to get the macbook.

But have u consider that cost of flying to HK and even if u dont fly there, you need to pay for the postage from HK to KL is considerably higher than from Sg to KL. anyway, computers either it is purchased personally or courier to our shore, there is no tax. Computer and accessories no tax, music player (ie iPOD) yes, games-yes.

Bahir, u know wat u can do?... even if the place doesnt handle the installment pymt for ur credit card, u can still charge the purchase, then contact ur bank abt the purchase made to convert it to installment.

BUT before u do that, check wit ur bank to see if they allow tat... most banks do now... :-) they'll of course charge a small percentage for their troubles la... the banks i mean...

i think cycom still has a few 2.0ghz (white) units... dunno if they r gonna offload it immediately or not...

can't get back deposits if you dowan the machine wan ah?...

Few observations with my black book today.

1. Easily stained oil. For those oily hand, must be extra careful. Have to constantly wipe the trackpad.
2. Try to get the 15 inch Screen Sav from Radtech. Cover the whole laptop keyboard.
3. Install memory is harder than Macbook Pro.

That's all for today.

I hate to be the rotten apple (no pun intended) but i got my MacBook 2.0 yesterday and today IT WONT TURN ON!! mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif

It worked this morning then a couple of hours later, it didnt! wont even turn on..! Took it to the Mac shop in Ikano and the guy tried a while then said that the RAM (i had upgraded to 1stick 1G) is NOT the problem and he didnt know why...! So im gonna have to take it to the Apple Service Center tomorrow. Man im irritated..oh and i then took it to the Mac shop in Low Yat Plaza (i live in KL) and the guy tried the boot disk to no avail...

NO i didnt install anything, not Boot Camp, not Windows, nothing..the guys at the shop asked me this so i thought id clear it up...

man. Just when i had bought the new ori Football Manager 06 to play....NOT a good way to start my Apple affair.

No such luck guys..everyone, from the shop that sold it to me (Cycom), to the two Mac shops (Ikano and Low Yat Plaza) told me to take it to the Apple Service Center, VR Technology in KL..so i just dropped it off this morning and they told me that they'd check it and get back to me...

What is unsettling is that VR Tech said that if it was a hardware issue, which they suspect, they'd fix it for free..BUT if it was a software issue, they'd CHARGE me RM100..! When i asked about it still being under warranty, the lady behind the counter said that since they're two different companies, they cant claim the charge, but said that i can "get" it from the shop that sold it to me...

I see myself having to pay for it no matter what comes out..doubt Cycom's gonna just fork a hundred bucks.
