to have DDR you need two equal sticks of ram.
*
Let's get the terminology correct.

DDR RAM will be DoubleDataRate (DDR) regardless of whether you run equal sticks or not.

It just won't run Dual Channel.

A detailed explaination of this is HERE.

Does the current macbook is capable to run Windows Vista?
*
If you go over to the Intel site for the graphics chipset used in the MacBook (GMA 950), you'll find that it has been certified as "Vista Capable"

http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/gma950/index.htm

As with all claims made by Intel and Microsoft however..... take with a liberal pinch of salt.

In any case; Vista is still VapourWare. Its launch date gets delayed again and again. If you buy a MacBook now, you'll ALREADY have a very capable OS that is in many ways what Vista is still trying to achieve.

It's called OSX V10.4.x.... whistling.gif

By the time Vista launches, Apple's would have updated OSX yet again and Microsoft will play catch up all over again...

In the end, you buy what best fits your needs. If you want a Mac then get a Mac. If you're in love with the form factor of the Vaios: then pay the premium. Your shoulders will thank you as you lug the lighter laptop around airports.

I've found (after 3 years of trying VERY hard to love the WinXP) that I prefer OSX.

I'd very much like to buy a lightweight 13in PowerBook (I prefer that name to MacBook). When it finally does show up that is.

MacdaNife, that's why you wanna sell it huh... your VAIO
*
Actually the Vaio that I'm unsuccessfully trying to sell off (looks like I'll have to GIVE it away) is the S28. I've since "upgraded" to the SZ18. The S and SZ Vaios suit my use for a laptop very well. So much so that I've passed the 15" Alu PowerBook to my wife.

all your posts suggest that you are a very practical and rational person. not many people have that, i am sure you are a very successful person. that's the best way of thinking. been following your posts for a while now. get what's best for you, not because you want to be cool, or trendy or to show off. I used Mac OS for sometime, I really do love it, but it too has it's own short-comings. Personally, I feel that Windows is good enough for me as I can do all the stuff I want there. I wanted to get the MacBook very badly as I thought I could have the best of both worlds. I've been to my local Apple Centre numerous times to try out the black MacBook. I am not too happy with the sharp edge of the palm rest and the keyboard is not for me. I need to get a new laptop soon, but I can wait till next year. My budget is RM 6.5K. Either I get a souped up Dell XPS M1210 or a Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro with education discount in US or Australia.
*
Wow, thanks man.... blush.gif

I'd wait for the new enclosure of the MacBookPro to surface before I buy. I'm guessing it will be in January. Hopefully earlier though. The present Aluminum case design was launched in MacWorld Paris in September 2003. I remember this well as I was at the time travelling in the US between Las Vegas and New Jersey. While in New Jersey I visited the AppleStore in Newark and saw the Aluminum PowerBook on sale. I had not heard/read of it as it was freshly launched a day earlier in Paris. Point is, it's been THREE YEARS. In computer life-span that's like an eternity. The replacement has got to come out very soon.

Hi guys,

I just bought a MacBook recently, and it was going good until recently... suddenly the battery charge drops tremendously... You guys experience this? It is still under warranty , how do I claim for warranty? I bought it over here in LYN, so was wondering where I can claim it, do I just walk in to any Apple shops?
*
You've got to provide more information as to what is meant by "charge drops tremedously".

There are many variables that affect battery performance: Percentage charge, usage details eg, brightness/disk activity/sound volume/CD use etc. All this would affect the rate of power use and therefore battery life. If you can't provide this information then nobody will be able to provide you with any useful advice.

In any case; the most likely scenario is that you need to recalibrate your battery monitoring parameters. See here:

thanks for the help guys thumbup.gif

Don't bother calling support. Just bring it in to VR Tech at Megan Phileo and let the guys there take a look at it.

hi , how do we set the default programe a file should be open with ? Let say i got VLC and Quicktime and Real Player . and now the defaulted is Quicktime everytime i click a movie file . How do i change this defaulted to other programes?
*
Right-click (or ctrl-click) the file and choose "Open With > Other..." in the pop-up menu/submenu.

In the window that pops up choose the application you want associated with the filetype and check the box that says "Always Open With".

That's it.

any source for that?

cos i just got my Macbook yesterday and it's now at full charge. just want to know how to care for the battery. biggrin.gif

time to go apple.com's discussion forum.........
*
AFAIK only NiCad batteries had a memory effect that required a full discharge. The present generation batteries do not require a full discharge any longer. And since they have a limited number of charge-discharge cycles: keeping the battery at full charge *should* prolong it's lifespan.

That much said: even if you keep it in shrinkwrap in your fridge: it is unlikely to perform as new two/three years from now and you're likely to have to buy a replacement. Batteries are listed as "disposables" or to be more politically correct "recycleable" for a good reason.

*edited* just read the linked (by Wei) recommendations by Apple to fully discharge the battery every month... Since it's recommended by Apple I guess it's now gospel... blush.gif

I want a mac ultraportable. Ditch the heavy aluminum. Business users require something light for running through airports.

For those who are Google-deficient:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,2127453,00.asp

It does not take a genius to realize that the MacBookPro line is going to be updated. I doubt the timing is this coming Teusday though. I'd expect the announcement at WWDC with availability only in the month after the announcement.

There'll always be better/cheaper computers down the road. (See Moore's Law )This is not an appreciating investment in terms of improving worth of the asset you aqquire.

It is therefore about the tasks you WILL accomplish in the TIME you have the computer.

If you already have a machine that is doing all that you need to do then by all means wait. But if you have tasks that are idling whilst you wait for the latest and a greatest then do yourself a favor, decide and then don't look back.

I have no sympathy for those post the cry.gif rants whenever an updated computer comes out. Were you expecting your precious machine to stay at the top of the heap forever?

hey guys...i duno if this has been posted before but...has any1 felt that their MBP with 2gb ram has slowed down?

my specs... 2.16 C2D and 2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM

when im photoshoping its lagging...not that bad but its getting worst i guess
*
There are three possibilities:

1. It's your Harddrive. Either you've almost filled it to the brim and therefore photoshop is unable to efficiently utilize a scratch disk OR your files are fragmented and you need to run a defrag (I use iDefrag) - you'll need to use a boot disk of some sort.

2. You're running out of RAM. The universal version of Photoshop (CS3) is much more RAM efficient (see point 3 below). If you are running multiple filters on very large files; it's most likely this. I upgraded to 4 gigs of RAM particularly with Photoshop/Aperture in mind. Cheapest I found was at www.mcetech.com at US99 per 2 gig stick.

3. You need to run the universal version of Photoshop (CS3). The earlier version forces Rosetta emulation which would naturally be slower.

ic...
for number 1 i would try defrag and my hard disk is barely 60% full

2. i have 2 gigs of ram...and  according to iStat its 1.23 gig free...

3. what do you mean universal version?free?
*
The universal version is the version optimised for Intel macs. The versions in Creative Suite 3 are the universal ones. The ones in Creative Suite 2 are the non-universal ones.

And no, they are not free. doh.gif

I'm using a wireless keyboard for my MBP at work. I find that it is more convenient to type using the wireless keyboard as compared to the built in one. Bought both from VR Tech. Mouse: RM27x, Keyboard RM24x. NOT cheap but it pairs as soon as I open the lid without any interaction on my part.

Don't send it to MacStudio in LYP (or Machines or MacAsia for that matter).

They are Resellers.

You want a Service Provider.

Hence: my choice would be VR Tech. Known those guys since before they VSSed out of Sapura. They're the only ones I would trust with my Macs (although I buy from anyone: service is a whole other matter).

Pricing would of course depend on your warranty status and what is wrong/needs to be replaced. doh.gif

i just bought macbook few days back, should i regret it??coz maybe d promo for mac will come.n anyone know is mac will release new macbook this year?
*
Of COURSE you should regret it. Computers will ALWAYS be more powerful/cheaper/be bundled with better stuff next week/month/year if not tomorrow. You really should have invested in landed property, mutual funds or forex. Heck, even Bursa Saham has a better chance of an appreciating investment than your MacBook.

Question is...

What will you achieve with your MacBook while it is in your posession? Will you educate yourself? Write an award winning composition? Do a knock-thier-socks-off presentation? In short: will you be productive in the time you have with the machine?

I've bought a LOT of computer hardware. I'd like to think it was an investment that has more than paid for itself. Many times over.
