A-Levels , STPM or IB ( incredibly expensive , possible only with a scholarship ) would do just fine .

Hi guys

Taking intensive add maths form 5 tuition...omg everyday at least 40 questions to do...sometimes 90+ questions and need to hand in the next day.

Because of this my whole november used to learn next year's add maths chapter 1, 2 and 3 already *pening*

Frankly speaking I've never been this hardworking (doing homework) compared to my form 4 dayz

I have a question :

Hydrophobic molecules can pass through the plasma membrane due to the fatty acid tails that are non-polar .

But why can those molecules enter the plasma membrane when there are hydrophilic heads ( polar ) in the first place ?

Also , I bought an IGCSE CIE Chemistry book ( the Cambridge one with a CD ) . It supplements my usual Chemistry SPM book really well , glossy pages and lots of colours . Very interesting !

It is also interesting to note that we're the only country that uses periods to separate the number of electrons in each energy level / shell . Like 2.8.8 , but in other parts around the world besides Malaysia , commas are used , like 2,8,8 . Weird huh ?

I am so free , so just give some comments .

Form 5 science and math subjects is harder than Form4 especially Bio though it have less chapter than Form4.

Biology - chapter 3 ( Very important , but SPM 2012 didnt come out in paper2 , but paper 3 )
Chemistry - My fav Chapter 2 Organic Compound is quite hard because need to remember a lot and u need to do a lot of exersice .
Chapter 3 Redox - Related to Chapter6 ( Form4 ) This chapter important .
Physics - No comment .

Btw , objective is easy to get >45 if u do a lot and DONT make any silly mistake ( Always circle the KEYWORDs before u choose the answer ) . I could only get 38/50 in trial ( physics ) but after i spamed 10+ set objective paper i got 48/50 in SPM

Additional Math and Math u just need to do a lot , then sure u can

For someone that is not really interested in pure science, will pure science be hard for them? I heard many ppl say it is hard but due to wat? Too much work? Can't understand? Too many things to rmb?

The main distinction between pure science and sub-science is Biology .

It really depends whether you are interested in the sciences or not . For one , if you're not interested , it will be harder for you to understand the concepts . There are a lot of concepts to be understood in each of the science subjects . Biology requires intensive reading , retention , recalling and application of facts . It's not easy . But if you're willing to work hard , it's manageable .

Arts is definitely easier in my opinion . I know this because I'm taking Ekonomi Asas too as an extra subject , just reading , some basic calculations and graph drawing and you're good to go . No practical work like what you'd expect in any of the sciences .

If you put in more effort, it'll not be hard, but for those who are not interested they'll be having more stress and problems (understanding..memorizing..etc)

Too much work? Plan your time well and magic happens.
Too many things to rmb? Put in more effort to think and spend more time, more practice.

I admit, I'm impressed that you guys are starting preparations for SPM so early. Haha when I took SPM a couple of years back I didn't think about it until about a month before the actual papers.

Though, if anyone needs any help, I'll try to help whenever I can. My knowledge of certain disciplines might have deteriorated a lot over time though.

For me, I really dont like drawing and arts, I suck at that.

I have interest in Science, but exam proved that I am not really good at it, how?

For Bio, I really hate anything related to animal and plants...

Couldn't really comprehend your question, but I will try to explain to the extent of my comprehension.
The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer which are generally impermeable to polar molecules or ions, due to the arrangement of hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails that permits passive diffusion of hydrophobic molecules but not polar solutes. For other than hydrophobic molecules, in such polar solutes such as nucleic acids or amino acids, diffusion or dialysis occurs via transmembrane protein complexes. The movement of substances through the plasma membrane is the product of the arrangement of the heads and tails, not either one alone.

Congratulations on getting yourself an international view of the syllabus. Yes, there are small but undistinct differences among our standards. I do prefer using the one accepted better by the international community, though do adhere to the format of each individual examination. What about other subjects?

Why does the product of heads and tails permit hydrophobic molecules from moving across the plasma membrane , but not polar ones ?

Does that mean hydrophobic molecules are unaffected by the polar heads ? Sorry , my biochemistry is still not that solid .

Where do you normally buy your textbooks / reference books ? Kinokuniya ? They are pretty expensive .

I also bought a CIE AS / A Level Economics book , the one that's endorsed by CIE . SAT Literature by Princeton , SAT Biology E/M by Kaplan , IB Geography ( it was priced at RM8 ) , SAT Subjects Test Official Book by CollegeBoard , Economics for IGCSE and O Level ( the older version ) , Barron's Physics ( just a physics textbook , not a test prep book ) and Cliff Note's Biology Study Solution .

I didn't buy the AP books and when I went back the second time , they were all gone . My friend who went there to get his IB books , got 4 which are Maths SL and HL , Economics , English Literature and Biology and several more A Level books . I just didn't have luck that time .

I saw many parents buying IB books for their children . Didn't know there were so many IB students in Malaysia , especially around Selangor . I also talked to a guy who recommended AP instead of IB . I'm still unsure . He said I could self study for it , and it is an equivalent to any one of the traditional pre-u courses . Is this true ?

I really like how these IGCSE topics are organised , especially the chemical analysis part ( how to prepare and collect gases , test for ions , etc . They were really comprehensive . ) Wish I could grab hold of more IGCSE books for a lower price .

Like property (in this context, hydrophilic or hydrophobic) attracts each other, in such a way, hydrophilic molecules are atrracted to hydrophilic molecules and vice-versa.
The phospholipid bilayer suggests hydrophilic heads, and hydrophobic tails, alligned in opposite sequence with tiny openings between them.
So, hydrophobic molecules have no problem entering via the bilayer as there is a long region of hydrophobic tails.
The hydrophilic heads are relatively too small to repel the molecules compared to the longer hydrophobic tails.
Hydrophilic molecules are repelled heavily by the longer hydrophobic tails, so not manage to travel through.
This makes plasma membrane impermeable to hydrophilic molecules, but selectively permeable to hydrophobes.
All that, plus the potential difference in concentration gradient, forces that either one must go through.

Good start with your tertiary education with those books.
AP allows private candidates, which means self-study is possible so there is no definite requisite for schooling, and enables full flexibility in choices. In comparison, one cannot take up the IB if not enrolled in any IB World schools, so no self-study is possible.
IB also limits flexibility by imposing a must on 6 subjects, all of different fields.
That is good to produce a wholesome student, from a non-competitive community. However, the problem lies in not allowing students to take more than 6 subjects, or the gifted to take more than 4 HL subjects.
Internationally, AP is regarded equally as IB, however, unofficially, I believe most are more impress with one having the IB Diploma.

So - from your explanations , can I just take these AP tests without A Level / STPM / IB ? Would it be risky ? Because if I fail to earn a place in one of those US universities , I need some back-up plans like Singapore or UK .

AP is accepted worldwide, with the exception of being slightly vague in Asian countries.
If you fulfill the criteria, you can earn the Advance Placement International Diploma.
But, it is a lot riskier not following the trended traditional routes, though one who embraces risk embraces change.

SPM is next year. Crap... I'm gonna try to aim for 9A+. I've started um... studying on December. I was TOTALLY FREE AND WAS RESTING BECAUSE I JUST FINISHED FINALS DURING NOVEMBER. NOBODY ASKED ME OUT. Then when I'm on my studying month... SUDDENLY EVERYBODY WANTS TO ASK ME OUT. WTF UGHHH ANNOYING.

So I've covered....

Chemistry = (3/8) chapters
Biology = (2/8) chapters
Add. Maths = (3/11) Chapters
Physics = (0.5/4) chapters. I don't count the first chap
Sejarah = (1/10) chapters.

UGHHH I'm running out of time fml....

To be honest, one can cover the syllabi of non-calculative subjects in just one month.
Focus on your calculative sciences, practical/vocational subjecrs and mathematics, and leave reading subjects at the ending.

You mean Physics + Add Maths + Maths ? But Biology and Chemistry are quite painful too. not to mention the Form 5 syllabus seems harder. I'm scared!

I did not study SPM F4 at all when I was a year younger.
Yes, that are the few to focus first, with the inclusion of Chemistry. Chemistry has a focus on calculation in all years.
Biology is just memory test, with of course, their comprehension.
You worry too much. When time comes, you will get it somehow, and if you don't, I am here to aid.

Let's finish them completely by the order of feasibility.

Form four.

I'm pretty okay with Physics , Chemistry , Maths and Add Maths .
Just need to brush up on light , salts , manufactured substances in industry and solutions of a triangle .

The same can't be said about Biology and Sejarah though . May need to do some intensive studying on the later chapters of Biology and also the long Islamic Civilisation chapters .

I'm good to go with Biology and Chemistry.

The mathematical except Modern Maths subjects... WELL. But now I see it add.maths is quite easy since I've been doing tons of exercises.

You've covered your Biology and Chemistry chapters already ? All of them ? Wow , you're fast .

I procrastinate a lot , and distractions here and there tempt me all the time . Especially with the internet and non-SPM books lying around .

Just to add a bit to the discussion here, from my experience, some US universities prefer you to have a Year 12, ie A-Levels or STPM. And depending on the university, you might even be able to transfer credit from your Year 12, which is equivalent to taking AP tests for credits in those courses. In my case, I was basically able to transfer credit for my first year Math, Physics and Chem courses from my A-levels.

Though, it is rather subjective, and very much dependent upon the university you're applying to. If you're in no particular rush to head overseas, I would recommend A-levels; it's probably one of the more versatile pre-U courses around. And occasionally, goals change as you go up the education level; taking a pre-U course might allow you extra time to think.

They would want K-12 education, which are Year 12 equivalent programs, such as the pre-u as we know them, but not necessarily completing 12 academic years.
A-Levels is also accepted, and grants credits equally to the AP, providing opportunities for even advanced standings in US or Canada.
But the topic of AP being a viable option is due to its extreme price differences between it and the rest, with STPM excluded.

Well that's very fair point. Although, I don't think I know anyone whom has done AP courses in Malaysia. Could be me just being extremely unobservant though. Just a question out of curiosity, would you happen to know which places offer AP courses for transfer into the states?

The Malaysian-American Council on Education Exchange (MACEE) handles most testing from US, including the AP and SAT.

International School of Kuala Lumpur. They are based on the American curriculum and they even offer IB alongside AP too. I am not sure about the admission process for locals though.

The thing is with only 4 or 5 subjects at A levels, you can only get a handful of credits out of them.
