SPM 2013 Thread

Thread opened since BC and EST are over for SPM 2012 candidates . Only Ekonomi left for most students . Also , I'm feeling a wee bit excited . Let's hope this excitement will last . Front page will be re-updated this time .

To all SPM 2013 candidates , here's something to look out for :

1 .SEJARAH PAPER 3
2 . NO MORE STANDARDISED STATE TRIALS

That's about it for now , rough front page . I shall keep the candidates as they were in the previous form four thread . Any changes , do let me know by dropping me a private message . Thank you .

Some sort of pre-university course and SAT .

A-Levels , STPM or IB ( incredibly expensive , possible only with a scholarship ) would do just fine .

Hi guys smile.gif

Taking intensive add maths form 5 tuition...omg everyday at least 40 questions to do...sometimes 90+ questions and need to hand in the next day.

Because of this my whole november used to learn next year's add maths chapter 1, 2 and 3 already *pening*

Frankly speaking I've never been this hardworking (doing homework) compared to my form 4 dayz biggrin.gif

BTW SPM 2013 candidate here too rclxms.gif Pure science (9 subjects) + ICT

Good early start.

Anyone faces early obstacles in your studies, feel free to post them here, regardless of the subject.
I'll be monitoring to answer your doubts.
Good luck to this batch.

I have a question :

Hydrophobic molecules can pass through the plasma membrane due to the fatty acid tails that are non-polar .

But why can those molecules enter the plasma membrane when there are hydrophilic heads ( polar ) in the first place ?

Also , I bought an IGCSE CIE Chemistry book ( the Cambridge one with a CD ) . It supplements my usual Chemistry SPM book really well , glossy pages and lots of colours . Very interesting ! laugh.gif

It is also interesting to note that we're the only country that uses periods to separate the number of electrons in each energy level / shell . Like 2.8.8 , but in other parts around the world besides Malaysia , commas are used , like 2,8,8 . Weird huh ?

I am so free , so just give some comments .

Form 5 science and math subjects is harder than Form4 especially Bio though it have less chapter than Form4.

Biology - chapter 3 ( Very important , but SPM 2012 didnt come out in paper2 , but paper 3 )
Chemistry - My fav tongue.gif Chapter 2 Organic Compound is quite hard because need to remember a lot and u need to do a lot of exersice .
Chapter 3 Redox - Related to Chapter6 ( Form4 ) This chapter important .
Physics - No comment .

Btw , objective is easy to get >45 if u do a lot and DONT make any silly mistake ( Always circle the KEYWORDs before u choose the answer ) . I could only get 38/50 in trial ( physics ) but after i spamed 10+ set objective paper i got 48/50 in SPM biggrin.gif

Additional Math and Math u just need to do a lot , then sure u can smile.gif

Good luck to all 2013 SPM candidates

For someone that is not really interested in pure science, will pure science be hard for them? I heard many ppl say it is hard but due to wat? Too much work? Can't understand? Too many things to rmb?

The main distinction between pure science and sub-science is Biology .

It really depends whether you are interested in the sciences or not . For one , if you're not interested , it will be harder for you to understand the concepts . There are a lot of concepts to be understood in each of the science subjects . Biology requires intensive reading , retention , recalling and application of facts . It's not easy . But if you're willing to work hard , it's manageable .

Arts is definitely easier in my opinion . I know this because I'm taking Ekonomi Asas too as an extra subject , just reading , some basic calculations and graph drawing and you're good to go . No practical work like what you'd expect in any of the sciences .

If you put in more effort, it'll not be hard, but for those who are not interested they'll be having more stress and problems (understanding..memorizing..etc)

Too much work? Plan your time well and magic happens.bruce.gif
Too many things to rmb? Put in more effort to think and spend more time, more practice. bruce.gif

I admit, I'm impressed that you guys are starting preparations for SPM so early. Haha when I took SPM a couple of years back I didn't think about it until about a month before the actual papers.

Though, if anyone needs any help, I'll try to help whenever I can. My knowledge of certain disciplines might have deteriorated a lot over time though.

For me, I really dont like drawing and arts, I suck at that.

I have interest in Science, but exam proved that I am not really good at it, how?

For Bio, I really hate anything related to animal and plants...

Weird huh ?

Couldn't really comprehend your question, but I will try to explain to the extent of my comprehension.
The plasma membrane is a phospholipid bilayer which are generally impermeable to polar molecules or ions, due to the arrangement of hydrophilic heads and hydrophobic tails that permits passive diffusion of hydrophobic molecules but not polar solutes. For other than hydrophobic molecules, in such polar solutes such as nucleic acids or amino acids, diffusion or dialysis occurs via transmembrane protein complexes. The movement of substances through the plasma membrane is the product of the arrangement of the heads and tails, not either one alone.

Congratulations on getting yourself an international view of the syllabus. Yes, there are small but undistinct differences among our standards. I do prefer using the one accepted better by the international community, though do adhere to the format of each individual examination. What about other subjects?

Why does the product of heads and tails permit hydrophobic molecules from moving across the plasma membrane , but not polar ones ?

Does that mean hydrophobic molecules are unaffected by the polar heads ? Sorry , my biochemistry is still not that solid .

Where do you normally buy your textbooks / reference books ? Kinokuniya ? They are pretty expensive .

I also bought a CIE AS / A Level Economics book , the one that's endorsed by CIE . SAT Literature by Princeton , SAT Biology E/M by Kaplan , IB Geography ( it was priced at RM8 biggrin.gif ) , SAT Subjects Test Official Book by CollegeBoard , Economics for IGCSE and O Level ( the older version ) , Barron's Physics ( just a physics textbook , not a test prep book ) and Cliff Note's Biology Study Solution .

I didn't buy the AP books and when I went back the second time , they were all gone . My friend who went there to get his IB books , got 4 which are Maths SL and HL , Economics , English Literature and Biology and several more A Level books . sad.gif I just didn't have luck that time .

I saw many parents buying IB books for their children . Didn't know there were so many IB students in Malaysia , especially around Selangor . I also talked to a guy who recommended AP instead of IB . I'm still unsure . He said I could self study for it , and it is an equivalent to any one of the traditional pre-u courses . Is this true ?

I really like how these IGCSE topics are organised , especially the chemical analysis part ( how to prepare and collect gases , test for ions , etc . They were really comprehensive . ) Wish I could grab hold of more IGCSE books for a lower price .

Like property (in this context, hydrophilic or hydrophobic) attracts each other, in such a way, hydrophilic molecules are atrracted to hydrophilic molecules and vice-versa.
The phospholipid bilayer suggests hydrophilic heads, and hydrophobic tails, alligned in opposite sequence with tiny openings between them.
So, hydrophobic molecules have no problem entering via the bilayer as there is a long region of hydrophobic tails.
The hydrophilic heads are relatively too small to repel the molecules compared to the longer hydrophobic tails.
Hydrophilic molecules are repelled heavily by the longer hydrophobic tails, so not manage to travel through.
This makes plasma membrane impermeable to hydrophilic molecules, but selectively permeable to hydrophobes.
All that, plus the potential difference in concentration gradient, forces that either one must go through.

Good start with your tertiary education with those books.
AP allows private candidates, which means self-study is possible so there is no definite requisite for schooling, and enables full flexibility in choices. In comparison, one cannot take up the IB if not enrolled in any IB World schools, so no self-study is possible.
IB also limits flexibility by imposing a must on 6 subjects, all of different fields.
That is good to produce a wholesome student, from a non-competitive community. However, the problem lies in not allowing students to take more than 6 subjects, or the gifted to take more than 4 HL subjects.
Internationally, AP is regarded equally as IB, however, unofficially, I believe most are more impress with one having the IB Diploma.

Thank you ! I understand now .

So - from your explanations , can I just take these AP tests without A Level / STPM / IB ? Would it be risky ? Because if I fail to earn a place in one of those US universities , I need some back-up plans like Singapore or UK .

AP is accepted worldwide, with the exception of being slightly vague in Asian countries.
If you fulfill the criteria, you can earn the Advance Placement International Diploma.
But, it is a lot riskier not following the trended traditional routes, though one who embraces risk embraces change.

So I've covered....

Chemistry = (3/8) chapters
Biology = (2/8) chapters
Add. Maths = (3/11) Chapters
Physics = (0.5/4) chapters. I don't count the first chap
Sejarah = (1/10) chapters.

To be honest, one can cover the syllabi of non-calculative subjects in just one month.
Focus on your calculative sciences, practical/vocational subjecrs and mathematics, and leave reading subjects at the ending.

You mean Physics + Add Maths + Maths ? But Biology and Chemistry are quite painful too. not to mention the Form 5 syllabus seems harder. I'm scared!

I did not study SPM F4 at all when I was a year younger.
Yes, that are the few to focus first, with the inclusion of Chemistry. Chemistry has a focus on calculation in all years.
Biology is just memory test, with of course, their comprehension.
You worry too much. When time comes, you will get it somehow, and if you don't, I am here to aid.

Sure.
Prepare a planner. List down your subjects.
Let's finish them completely by the order of feasibility.

I'm pretty okay with Physics , Chemistry , Maths and Add Maths .
Just need to brush up on light , salts , manufactured substances in industry and solutions of a triangle .

The same can't be said about Biology and Sejarah though . May need to do some intensive studying on the later chapters of Biology and also the long Islamic Civilisation chapters .

Thank you ! I understand now .

So - from your explanations , can I just take these AP tests without A Level / STPM / IB ? Would it be risky ? Because if I fail to earn a place in one of those US universities , I need some back-up plans like Singapore or UK .
*
QUOTE(reconnaissance @ Dec 12 2012, 11:46 PM)
AP is accepted worldwide, with the exception of being slightly vague in Asian countries.
If you fulfill the criteria, you can earn the Advance Placement International Diploma.
But, it is a lot riskier not following the trended traditional routes, though one who embraces risk embraces change.
*
Just to add a bit to the discussion here, from my experience, some US universities prefer you to have a Year 12, ie A-Levels or STPM. And depending on the university, you might even be able to transfer credit from your Year 12, which is equivalent to taking AP tests for credits in those courses. In my case, I was basically able to transfer credit for my first year Math, Physics and Chem courses from my A-levels.

Though, it is rather subjective, and very much dependent upon the university you're applying to. If you're in no particular rush to head overseas, I would recommend A-levels; it's probably one of the more versatile pre-U courses around. And occasionally, goals change as you go up the education level; taking a pre-U course might allow you extra time to think.

They would want K-12 education, which are Year 12 equivalent programs, such as the pre-u as we know them, but not necessarily completing 12 academic years.
A-Levels is also accepted, and grants credits equally to the AP, providing opportunities for even advanced standings in US or Canada.
But the topic of AP being a viable option is due to its extreme price differences between it and the rest, with STPM excluded.

Well that's very fair point. Although, I don't think I know anyone whom has done AP courses in Malaysia. Could be me just being extremely unobservant though. Just a question out of curiosity, would you happen to know which places offer AP courses for transfer into the states?

The Malaysian-American Council on Education Exchange (MACEE) handles most testing from US, including the AP and SAT.

International School of Kuala Lumpur. They are based on the American curriculum and they even offer IB alongside AP too. I am not sure about the admission process for locals though.

The thing is with only 4 or 5 subjects at A levels, you can only get a handful of credits out of them.

Like how and what should I do from now ? Can I apply scholarship? Malay one and will I go through like all those people in Malaysia who took like language courses in Japanese or Korean in some university before going there ? Because I know I need to master Japanese first... but yeah I want to migrate to Japan if it's possible out of personal reasons.

Hi guys, I just stumble across an Add-Maths chapter 1 question, and I'm not sure what the question really mean.

Function f(x) = 12/hx+k

x =/= -k/h,
f(0)= -3,
f(7) = 4

Question b) find the value of x, when f(x)=x

That's the question I'm have problem with, aren't the image x supposed to be altered somehow compared to the object? x after the function is still x?

Thanks.

Sure.
That result slip is unimportant at all. No point, except if scholarship is in your mind.
There will be a gold-coloured PMR slip which will be issued middle next year.
That is the real deal.

You have to first define what is the constant h and k, probably your question a.
You have to understand the question.
You need to find a specific value of x that when you insert in the function results in that value as well.

nah you don't. after equating x to the function, just manipulate the equation to get your values of x. Just to clarify, in this case:

12/(hx+k) = x
12 = x*(hx+k)

And then you do whatever's necessary to find x

I've got the plannings/head-cracking stuff done earlier , most probably it would be either preparing for my SAT / Pre-U or scholarship hunting .

Wow , L.I.E . I wanted to take it , but after taking into account that there isn't any tutor around my area for L.I.E , I gave up . I took Ekonomi instead .

But around November I got the info from my friend saying that there is an experienced L.I.E tutor in close proximity . Gahh .

Before including your username in the list , I need to confirm , you're taking 10 subjects ?

It's an unofficial tradition that the SPM Thread be kept running before the announcement of the results . After that it dies off or will be closed by the TS . laugh.gif

Modification part is the easiest section to score. All you need to know is the concept, and the physical theory behind them repeats always.

That is fine.
I once entered so many competitions that rendered me official leave from school for an accumulative of fivr months a year.
My attendance record is filled with "absence for official representation - (event name)".
Revising cares not the time, but the strategy.

BTW i'm stuck on this add maths question.

The question is:
''If B is a root of the quadratic equation 2x^2=x+1, show that 4B^3=3B+1.''

Anyone can help me?

solve the quad equation to find X and B = one of the X, then prove the equation.

I don't get the part about equating B to one of the roots of the first equation . Any hints ? Should the second cubic equation be solved also ?

the answer is B=1.

solve the quad equation.
when you solved the quad eq. you got two roots.
the root is 1 and -0.5 .

substitute both roots into the 4B^3=3B+1 .

you will find the answer is 1 because B=1 fits with the equation.

The question isn't about proving the second equation ? blink.gif They want us to find the root the fits the B equation ?

Oh I kinda got it : Since B is a root of the first equation , if 1 fits the second equation , we have shown that the second equation is indeed true . Haha . Thanks by the way .

Thanks for the answer. rclxms.gif

I got it. So this question is asking about the value of B and use the value to show the qua equation right? I thought we only need to directly sub the B into the equation. sweat.gif

If you take Bio,will be lagi worse..
The true colours of Bio will come out in Form 5 syllabus.
Chem and Phy for Form 5 is bearable..Maybe Electromagnetism(Chap 3)(Physics) requires more understanding and imagination skills.
Add Maths Chap 5 Trigonometry is tough..But in SPM exam, only 2 sections of it come out..
Just be Consistent and study at least 1 hour a day...
Dont be like me,Study gao gao and undergo crapload of stress before the month of SPM...Really no peace of mind when you sleep at night.
Every year seniors will say study consistently. But there is bound to be juniors who always slog during the eleventh hour..
It's a phase you go through la.

If you can handle Biology , Physics shouldn't be a problem , right ? The hardest science paper ( difficulty in scoring an A+ ) is Biology . The experiments are way more simple than Chem and Bio too . A question : Done memorising the experiments in Bio ? And done with the Nutrition chapter ?

I've covered Biology. But right now, I'm covering it again........... finished chapter 5. Chapter 6 next. Wah.... you've covered a lot................. KYAAAAAA jealous. Chemistry, I've covered everything but I'm still lacking at 7,8,9. Acid, Salts and Manufacturing. Still got A for my finals tho for chem huhu. Pain in the ass. I'm so lazy today so no studying. I've been focusing on Physics and Add Maths more. My weakest subjects..... trust me I can't really handle physics. I UNDERSTAND IT BUT WHEN I APPLY IT ON PAPER. BAAAAMMMMM GOT C. foooook. But at the same time, it might be my fault since during 2012, I've only been focusing on every subject except Physics, Add Maths and BM..

must be constant and even in studying,if you ignore subjects like bm,physics and add maths, your brain will "karat" and rot somewhere when answering questions during exam.

Salt requires mostly memorizing and if you dont understand, you can view some video on youtube about salt. That's what I did for my last semester exam.

I don't see why people are saying that Salts requires a lot of memorising . In fact , if your basic is good , only a little memorising is necessary .

Study in chunks : That's what I did .

Start with solubility of salts . Then methods of preparing soluble salts ( very important to know the procedures well -- you will be asked in the essay section ) . If you're done , you can start studying method of preparing insoluble salts ( this is fairly easy , choose 2 soluble salts where the product will be insoluble , hint : choose a nitrate salt and add a potassium or sodium salt ) .

Then , jump to the qualitative analysis of salts ( stoichiometry , this is easy if you still remember how to balance equations and do some calculations involving chemical reactions , you should be able to cover this in no time ) .

With that aside , start with the gas tests ( oxygen , hydrogen , nitrogen dioxide , etc ) which will help you in determining the presence of anions in a salt compound .

Go on with anion tests ( again , pretty easy -- only four of them . )

Cation tests have may be a bit tricky -- you should know the colours of ions , copper ( II ) blue , iron ( II ) green , iron ( III ) brown , zinc -- yellow when hot , white when cold , lead -- brown when hot , yellow when cold , lead ( II ) oxide -- black , copper ( II ) carbonate - green , potassium manganate ( VI ) purple , etc ) .

Then all you have left are the solubility tests using NaOH and ammonium solutions , these are the important ones . Also remember specific tests like Nessler's reagent , potassium hexacyanoferrate ( II ) , potassium iodide ( to test for the presence of lead ( II ) ions which forms a yellow insoluble salt ) .

That's about it . You got to refresh every day after reading this chapter by reading short notes , even after multiple readings I still am not 100 % sure of certain things , and I'd have to refresh later ( I've left my Chemistry aside for four days now -- concentrating on Physics ) .

All the best !

Hmm most likely the ones involving modification and justification. I'm having some trouble with resolution of forces, archimedes. And overall idk so scared man trying to get A+ for SPM but kyaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Huaaaaaa.

Modification and justification involves more answering technique / common sense than Physics concepts , to be honest .

My advice would be to use tables to answer these questions . Modification on one side , and the reason on the other . The reasons needn't be complex , just think simple . For example :

Modification : The car should be made of low density carbon fibre
Reason : Light and strong , enable car to move faster

It is that simple . Look at trial answer schemes and SPM answer schemes . Looks like your problem is more on answering techniques rather than your understanding on Physics . Don't worry , most of us are still not sure of the answering techniques for all the subjects , I'm sure we'll get there before SPM .

Resolution of forces involves the breaking up of forces into their components -- sorry man , I can't help you here because it gets technical when there are more than two forces involved . Maybe posting a question here would help . You just need to practice more on this , plus make sure your basic trigonometry knowledge is there ; without it you can't do much . Is your Maths good ? If you are , you should be able to grasp this quite easily .

Again , you're being too general . What Archimedes ? The person ? His principle on buoyancy ? Calculations involving buoyant force ? Apparent weight and actual weight ?

Don't rush , you have ample time before SPM . Take your time and take it one step at a time .

YEAH, my answering technique for physics suck. Like I know what the answer is but i can't apply it on paper. so frustrating!!!! Modification kyaaaa idk how people say it's easy. T_T

Well archimedes when it involves the application for it. The Hydrometer and stuffs.

The application parts don't come easy , friend . Even I , who claim to be passionate about Physics , have to read the applications part multiple times to get them right -- especially the hydraulic brakes part , aneroid barometer , etc .

Do you have good teachers ?

Simple answer : I understand . I rarely memorise anything in Physics , with F = ma as an exception ( if you would want to call it memorising , I remember all of the form four equations due to frequent encounters with them when practising calculation questions . )

I try to understand even the equations , like impulsive force , when time of impact increases , the overall impulsive force decreases , and then relate it to the equation . I ask myself , why , when throwing a ball upwards , the gravitational acceleration must be negative ; when going downwards , positive ; when involving both upwards + downwards motion , it's taken to be negative . I ask questions all the time -- I think this is an integral and a healthy attitude that must be in everyone when studying Physics .

Looking at other members, feel so ashamed being in commerce stream sad.gif cause I'm the only one out of all the rest.

Succes by Oxford Fajar always include non-syllabus information.

For Sejarah, just stick to your text book unless you want to read further about some events.

Orientation till tomorrow

Today got discipline briefing.

1. Cannot play kad terup. Reason: might tempt us to forget about our prayers

2. To talk with opposite genders, we need to distance ourselves at least 1metres. Reason: See the west how messed up they are.

After this two I cannot tahan already and sleep. End story

In years before, gerak gempur papers, or standardized state papers which are issued by the state education agency will be conducted annually for majority subjects.
Each state will have their own standardized trial papers which only differs by zones. So, all the students in the same zone will be sitting for the same papers, regardless of the schools. This enabled us to gauge the performance of students as all students in the same zone are sitting for the same papers, and also to more adapt to government-style questions.

However, since to standardized the timing, so that every schools of the same zone and therefore same papers will start at the same time, those papers will be issued weeks earlier to school administrators. This caused rampant leaks, and this compromised accuracy of the examination and rendered the objectives of the standardized trial examinations failed.

What school segregates student by gender to that extent?
Are you currently enrolled in a religious-affiliated school?

Dear seniors, is it necessary for me to take add maths tuition? Can I most likely still do decently even without tuition?

The average students I knew took them, and that enabled them to maintain top grades effortlessly.
Some don't but yet they still maintain great scores; some others fail.

Personally, one do not need require it at all, even to achieve scores equal to those that did.
Time management and discipline actually put more use in a two-hour session than a tutor can do so. Within two hour, I managed to skim through the entire Biology Form 4 and Form 5.
However, taking tuition gives one confidence.

It is entirely depending on one's preference. I suggest you not to.
Once you take tuition, you will not have the drive to study on your own anymore, you will wait for the tuition session to study, and the rest of the time is at waste, though this do not apply to everyone. But, majority, I believe, will agree with me that they did.

i love my tuition classes. I learn heaps more there than in class. Hence, I do all my studying there and I can have adequate rest/play during my free time smile.gif Works for me, but not for everyone. For add maths, either you can fork out at least 3-4 hours a week doing practices, or you can just pay the tuition teacher to do the same thing, only up point is that he/she can teach you if you don't know how to solve a problem rather than cracking your head all day.

The Internet, and asking any Biology tutors I met at work.

Why would it be awkward?
I never took tuition classes, and I even did marking and simple tutoring for several subjects, even for students older than me.

are you a teacher? biggrin.gif just curious ;p

nah, it's not compulsory to go for tuition. Depends on your study methods. To be honest, looking back now, tuition is still spoon feeding you with info, just the same as going to class in primary/sec school. If you can study on your own, ask when needed and just do things independently, then you'll definitely cope better in uni/college.
