Any idea how to improve english continuous writing? I've never get a mark above 40 from my teacher since the beginning of the year. Although I still managed to get an eighty for English in trial exam. I feel it's still not enough and I think my status for getting an A+ is quite unsafe.

QUOTE(Heartnsoul @ Sep 30 2013, 06:43 PM) Operation definition, you'll have to read on activities in the reference books. Allow me to add in my opinion,For inference, if it's bio, read up on reference books, if Phy and Chem, just : <responding> is influenced by <manipulated> My teacher taught us some techniques in answering the operational definition part. For biology, the sequence is like : <transpiration> is a process where ..... (the definition) which is the ( responding variable) and is affected by the (manipulated variable) if possible, add in the fixed variable. For chemistry, we write ( what we do ) and the <observation>. For instance, (when chlorine gas passed through the hot iron), <brown solid is formed>. It is advisable to write what you've seen in the experiment rather than deducing what products have been formed. |

QUOTE(Just Visiting By @ Sep 30 2013, 06:04 PM) To get above 40, you'll need to demonstrate English proficiency similar to Americans, British or Singaporeans. It's close to impossible, unless you did what I said or come out with something extremely impressive. Thanks for your advice. I've always been deprived of ideas when writing the continuous essays. Same thing don't happen when I am about to write Chinese essays. I've skimmed through my friend's essay which gets 49 out of 50 and I found it was interesting yet impressive, although it is not lengthy but his points are strong and clear. And the most important is, he has only a little grammatical error. No joke. He told me he used to read novels since young. I really have no idea how to improve my essay. I'm feeling of posting it here, is it okay everyone? Fyi, I just got 37 out of 50 which is a C-graded essay. |

Ignore first draft slips and repetitions or omissions where necessary . ' , in mark schemes . Anyway , I have this problem in English were I'm not sure which question to choose . Did you face this ? I take a considerable amount to decide on a question . |

QUOTE(maximR @ Sep 30 2013, 10:15 PM) Me too . I've written letters to newspapers , asked Head Examiner and teachers to check my work and have been told that I'll do fine in SPM English , but I still am not satisfied ; hence , difficulty in choosing a question that will best suit me . Confidence issues I guess ? Yea, it's some sort of lacking of confidence? I don't feel insecure for my other papers except English paper 1. After finished writing my essay I don't feel satisfied but I feel blank instead. Furthermore for my trial exam it was the very first time for me to write formal letter for directed writing. Everything was like ended in a mess. |

Regarding the active or passive voice for paper 3, I've just attended a chemistry seminar and the teacher says that we should use active voice for the experiment. And then I just recalled what I had wrote for trial exam, I used passive voice and my teacher didn't deduct my marks at all. I wonder why .....
