I've been lurking in this thread since pg3 from V1. In just a few days it's grown...

BTW, I'm really interested in the N9. From what I gathered from the posts here and around the world, I can't help but feel that the OS is rushed instead of polished (I'm not a Iphone user). The OS does have tremendous potential and is great but the lack of predictive text and chinese input are holding me back Still, I'm hoping that the next OS update will, hopefully, be able to solve some of the minor-but-enough-to-get-on-your-nerves problems.

Also, would like to ask should I wait till the Sea Ray comes out? Thanks in advance

Nop, I restarted accidentally while testing something. I was helpless with the low battery issue because I was outside when it went off.

on my first try. the fella die die cannot play. renamed extension to mp4 also doesn't help........... but strangely at one point, it actually shows the thumbnail of the MKV! but still refuse to play.

Added on October 12, 2011, 4:14 amok now same, I put the MKV file there. I can see the thumbnail but when I try to play it says WRONG FORMAT. hrmrmr..............

MKV is just a container really. There are so many formats nowadays. Even MP4 itself contain over close/over 10 different profile. N9 also support MP4 but the old hardware says it all.

N8/C7/E7 video accelerator is much more advance than N9. MP4 also got few different profile and sadly N9 hardware support the most basic one. Last year when I got the N8, I was using Legend and it can't play a shit. Now, a year later, I have to say there's no reason we will face this again except to say that Nokia SCREW UP N9 ON PURPOSE. That's it...

i am now 32 hrs encounting with 26% battery life..

activity..my normal weekday usage except for i turn off 3g and use gsm instead..


plus 1 hard reset and show off my new phone is capable of to my interested friends

Maybe an OS upgrade will bring it up to speed. There's a VLC Player under development which may solve most of the incompatible format problem. I hope it's not hardware related. But in the meantime there are lot's of converters around which you can use to convert to a compatible format. I find that Any Video Converter's (free) customized MP4 movie works well.

Anyway, does anyone having difficulties on sync with Google contacts? I've tried the Mail for Exchange using m.google.com but still failed

yes, I'm aware it's a container, I'm just expecting it to play at least even the most basic one since the site says it does.

like what I said, it's funny that when I on the Video Player it actually shows the thumbnail of the show, means it actually reads it.

It just refuses to play.

Darn thing about N9 also it the camera, can only focus once. once you let go, it takes the photo already. Anyone got better way to do it?

Not sure if there will be codecs available; For N900, after install codecs, it can play many types of file, then there is also mplayer, which can play even more types of file.
There's also substitles support.

In my-meego.com, there is KMPlayer available, but I haven't tried it yet.

As above mentioned, it can be resolved with codecs, and/or using mplayer.


mplayer also can, it's already available in older Maemo. The problem is it doesn't use GPU for decoding... So, it pretty much rely on the processor.

Surely not hardware related, since N900 which is much older, have no problems; Heard they even managed to get N900 to play 720p videos.

If you don't want it to capture, slide your hand away from the "button" then let go, then it won't capture.

I just played my XVID Avatar in my N9....really smooth and sound so crisp! haha....i'm lovin it

If u want it to continous to track your auto focus don't let go hold it until you get it clear

Friends, just to let you know some of the games which were free in Ovi store and My-Meego have become paid apps. I don't know if or when the rest will follow but you may like to act on it.

everybody is saying N8 camera is better than N9.....can anybody do a comparison please?

Need not compare, it's definitely better, very obvious.

But for speed, smoothness, N9 wins hands down.

Anyone encounter problem with battery charging?
it shows fully charge but when i unplug the cable it drops right to 96%

is this normal?, already try hard reset but still the same issue

Indeed true nokia n8 camera is way better than n9 in most condition except low light photography.

You don't need a camera as good as N8 unless you need to take some great shots (replacing your digicam).

N9's camera is already very good for some casual family candid shots and to upload to Fb / Twitter (N9 doesn't allow upload to Twitter)

Hmm, hope they will add that soon.

the comparison is solely for comparison and knowledge purposes....as for me N9 quality is as good as what viravira said....

I am considering this or the older N900 (Im not being sarcastic)... I very much prefer a physical keyboard, but worried that the older phone might have bugs and not supported anymore..
having the "latest" or older doesn't matter to me as long as fast device with good online capable...

n9 looks quite nice but its difficult to decide since i'm so used to physical keyboard...

Nothing wrong, it won't show 100% (depending on how they tweak it); The percentage is just for reference. You may see 0% the phone still didn't turn off.

Many of us own both, I have both, the difference in obvious.
Aspire have both and he got amazing skills, check out his Flickr.

If you don't look at which camera took it, you might not even be able to tell. It's more about the skill and how you utilize it.
But generally, N8 camera quality is way better. It's just like some people want to compare iPhone4 camera with N8... By looking at pictures along, you wouldn't really able to tell because like what aspire did, he can take amazing shots with N9, or iPhone4, but that doesn't mean it's better than N8.

I also heard CalvinPixels use his N8 did better than Nikon D3S, but that doesn't mean N8 is better than Nikon D3S, right? It's more about the skills, but if you want to compare the device/tools, then it's obvious which can produce better quality.

Just got my Nokia N9 yesterday and made an unboxing video

Transferring contact from iPhone to Nokia N9 is very easy transfer contacts from iPhone to N9

It should works on Android/Symbian/BB.

so can you take the same picture from both camera and upload it here....i'm sure you don't need skill to do this.....i would like to see the image quality comparison.....this is what i want from the first place....

i own a proper camera and i don't intend to compare physical hardware since camera phone is just a camera phone....it won't replace a real full frame camera in the first place....

The difference is usually obvious only in low light shots. In good light you can hardly tell the difference between N8, N9, digicam or DSLR.

To me a camera phone is just for record shots. For those important holidays and event photography I'll use my Nikon D300. I'll never dream of using a phone camera.

However camera phones have got so good that many users are thinking of using it as their main camera. You should only do that if image quality isn't critical to you. And the best phone camera out there is N8, period.

Since yesterday, I am often required to login into my Facebook for N9 after some time. It didn't happen previously. Any idea what is wrong?

& ever since I used my N9, I am swiping on any other touch screen gadgets e.g. iPad.

Kernel will automatically discontinue charging after 96%+.It's done to prevent overcharging & damaging battery in long run.
To be precise I think N9 should charge till 96.6% like N900.

The camera on a phone also becomes useful if not allowed to bring in camera to sporting events. Now more & more terrorist, mineral water bottle also they dont allow in the stadium.
During the recent badminton world champ in england, they dont allow camera in without media pass. Those who went took photos, videos with their smartphones, sometimes blur2,lol.

Aspire, your phototaking skills very good lah. What settings u use for the yellow flower pic?

Previously there was a website which show the comparison, but even that it's not a fair comparison due to limited control, the settings were different. N9 uses higher ISO which result in more noise, while N8 uses slower shutter speed.
And like KennyKB said, depend what you compare, lowlight or daytime/outdoor. If compare lowlight, it's VERY obvious.

For comparison, people can do tricks if you ONLY see the photo alone. I can provide better lighting condition for N9, so the end result can favor N9 or show comparable result.

I don't have the N8 with me now, I'm using N900 and N9 now, can't carry so many phones. But if you wanna see, just go to aspire's flickr and see yourself those photos taken with N9 and N8.

Tell the truth, you really wanna compare and FEEL it, go to Nokia Store, take the N8, take a sample shot, maybe you will UNDERSTAND IMMEDIATELY without even compare.

if it's available for N900, N9 should have it too rite?

Else you can try porting/repackage N900's codec to N9.

I didn't say not to share? I already said the difference is obvious and shared this information; But if you chose not to believe, I would suggest you to try it yourself.
I also explain that seeing images comparison does not make justice as the settings are different, and people can do different condition to fool others into thinking the other is better.

Manual control? What sort of manual control? It's still limited if you understand manual control in photography.

In V1 thread, already got people posted sample and the website comparison for lowlight, the difference is obvious, but the settings is still different, so the comparison is still not fair; Are you going to rely on that comparison?
Actually, I'm not sure why it's so hard to accept what people say; Is it you want to be convinced or hear that N9 is better?

I didn't say N9 camera is good or bad, let you judge; But if compare N8 and N9, the difference is just obvious. Don't have to trust anyone here, you can try it out yourself, or maybe you might think N9 is better, but it doesn't mean who is wrong or right. As long as you're happy.

Not sure how is it better, and how is it compared; I suppose, let's compare ISO800 settings for both and see the quality produce in lowlight condition, and lowlight, I mean, indoors with flourescent light or poor lighting; Not outdoor shooting building with lights.

Yea, but need to get used to it too, sometimes accidentally swipe away the screen.
I turn on swipe down to close, so, sometimes accidentally close the app (landscape mode, the swipe down is landscape swipe down).

so the bigger aperture in N9 just a marketing gimmick?? also come across the new ip4s which also keep emphasize it's so call new and only bigger aperture camera as well...

That's the surface part, which people can copy still.

The more appealing thing is the social network integration, when you set up your "accounts", it automatically pulls all your contact and flood your feeds homescreen. Your Contacts you can see all the information which they provide in the social network (e.g. FB), and from the contact, you can click to access their profile or initiate Chat (e.g. FB Chat, Skype Chat), which is not any 3rd party app, but built into OS Conversations (sms).
Actually this feature already available in N900/Maemo, but now its further refine.

Another appealing thing is the true multi-tasking.

But these things, not easily shown on surface; People will need to see it in detail or experience it to fully understand/appreciate it. Most people, if you tell them, the just "owh" or "so good ar", but not sure if they actually understand it; But when they actually use it, then they will understand it better.

i do have to agree with you about this....i end up disabling it back and let it be in the multitask screen....so far no issue or whatsoever with having lot2 and I mean A LOT! of application running in the background....hahha

Bigger aperture, yes, but smaller sensor wor? Sensor very important.
Bigger aperture, more light come enter, but sensor small, less light gathering ability already.

True thats why lens with big aperture cost a fortune.

Practically if you are into photography you know bigger aperture have better bokeh. I can confirm that the bokeh of N9 is better than N8

k. quite a few problems with N9.

Just now i try to key in wifi pas, the keypad doesn't respond.

Then there's also the keypad not being able to retract cos no button there. want to press submit button have to rely on small screen space.

I am looking forward someone to port Fcam into the N9. Miss my Nokia N900 . The Nokia N900 default cam also so so. When u use Fcam it opens another world to you.

Been connecting to multiple wifi zone havent had such issue yet. I know if your screen have sweat it will affect the sensitivity.

WHAT!!! a sweat on screen will cause sensitivity fluctuation!!!

Sensor size will also affect the DOF; Bigger sensor will have more shallow DOF.


Previous Calvin got post one website, doing some calculations or something, the light gathering ability of N8 is still way better. So, it's more like + little, - more.
Maybe that's why they stick to lower megapixel also.

This has gotta be the saddest day of my life.....
My lovely N9 already got scratch on the screen

Its not obvious and very small, but if u see direct under bright light, can see the small scratch. Very sad woo
Im keeping it in a pouch now 24/7, untill I get a screen protector. I have to buy it at any cost!

Have u tried to use water and pressure to rub it out?

U put it together with keys or other hard objects? Have you tried wiping it out with some soft cloth e.g. those used to wipe spectacles?

Very unlikely to get scratches unless you have handled it roughly.

I tried but still can see. I only put in in my jeans pocket.
But I will try to clean it again until tonight

I already thought of selling it at 1800 then buy new one again But think again, maybe I shud stick with it 1st

Try using the spray or cleaner for specs-Lens Spray. Then wipe with the cloth for specs
