The Nokia N9
The Nokia N9 which runs on MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan is one of its kinds. As you all know, Nokia has long ago fight in the touchscreen war ever since their first phone the Nokia 5800XM. This was supposed to be their ultimate weapon and all I can say that, it delivered like what they say – Experience the Fluidity. Coming from N8, C7 and X7 user, you will feel the smoothness like never before when you use this Nokia N9. This beast runs on the ARM Cortex-A8 OMAP3630 1Ghz and graphic is handle by PowerVR SGX530. It is also equipped with 1024MB RAM and comes with 2 variations of either the 16GB or the 64GB. Camera none other than the 8 megapixel Carl Zeiss optic and it is able to take 720p@30fps. Not forgetting that display which sets a super high standard on other Nokia device, the 3.9” WVGA (854x480) AMOLED display reinforced with their gorilla glass.
Outlook
The N9 is carved so beautifully that it wonders, why there are only one Nokia phone is design like this. The mighty 3.9” AMOLED screens shielded with gorilla glass and clear black display (CBD) just make everything look so freaking vibrant and with the removal of the outer layer glass, now your icon is seems like it is FLOATING on your screen. For the design and outlook, all I can say is, you have to see and hold it in real life. Rest assured that you will be pampered with a very classy device feel and also that exclusive feeling.
The OS and Swipe
It’s all about the swipe in this phone. You all do realize there is no home button that is because they don’t even need to include it, the swipe feature work as advertised. You are presented with 3 home screens – Events, Applications and Open Applications. Just swipe from left to right, or right to left to change screen, and by swiping up to down on an app, you are able to close them, while from down to up will open the shortcut launcher. Everything is swipe. This provides a different way of operating the phone in order to return to the home screen. Never had any lag in the swiping, unlocking the phone at first seems to be like a challenge for new users since there is nothing stating that u must swipe from edge-to-edge.
Maps
I was pampered by the Maps from Nokia that whenever I use Maps on my iPhone. I feel extremely disappointed. The Nokia Maps just keeps getting better and better with updates. I been using the GPS lately a lot for travelling and all I can say that their navigation system is freaking awesome. You just can’t believe that you are getting all of this for – FREE. I guess maybe all the other competitors can learn something from Nokia. Their Maps is so well done that you feel your GPS suddenly lack of use. Couple with their battery power of 1450mah, you can feel that this thing really last you. One thing I would one to mention if you are using GPS under direct sunlight, fear not the CBD really helps out greatly. You don’t need to adjust the brightness; everything is so crystal clear now.
[/U]Social Network
The two social networks that I would be talking about are – Facebook & Twitter. Based on week of using it, the battery lasted greatly with feeds automatic updated towards the end of the day I still have like 30 – 40% juice left in the N9. The Facebook app is by far the best in any Nokia, which is because everything just functions fluidly. There is no delay in Twitter feeds too. Comparing it with the iPhone Facebook and twitter app both timeline is on time, there is no delay whatsoever. Other than that, there is a lagging issue when there are too many friends on Facebook posting updates, that is proven with my account which have 400+ friends versus my friend who had around 800+ friends. Whenever updates come in together with her twitter, the phone tends to lag badly making the swipe gesture not responding at one point I thought it hang. Apart from that, all your logins from your Nokia, Facebook, Twitter and many other accounts are group into this app called “Accounts”. I find it kind of troublesome if there is a need to logout from Facebook, have to go to that app either disable the account or delete it. Why can’t they just have a logout button on Facebook which instantly sync with the account when we logout. Other than that, I am very happy with the Facebook which have evolved so much from Symbian.
Camera
The camera on the Nokia N9 fair pretty well under normal lighted condition, that is because it does not come equip with xenon flash for night pictures. It fares well for point and shoot actually, taking decent picture to be printed. For example, one of the forummer in Lowyat.net forum really showcase the capabilities of the camera but I can say that I prefer the camera on the Nokia N8 more although I wish the N8 have the interface like what N9 had, the interface is now upkeep to the minimal everything feels so good for the eyes, you no longer need to wade through options just to get settings done, now the icons are much more finger operation friendly.
Web Browser
Web browser is currently the highest in HTML 5 test shows 255 and 14 bonus point. This is currently the highest in every other Nokia phone. That being said, the browsing experience change significantly, everything seems to load fast and also pinch-to-zoom and other mode are now so much more lag free. The experience is certainly one of the best I ever had on the Nokia phone. Face with no issues at all when browsing website such as Youtube. Everything was smooth and responded very well.
Conclusion
If there is a time to buy a Nokia phone, this is the time. This phone has put me in a tight position between me and my iPhone on daily use. The only reason I am sticking more with the iPhone is there are so much app for it, therefore if Nokia improve in this matter they will surely fare well in this department. Obviously there are still some issues and bugs which require fine tuning but the basic of the phone is already there, and if Nokia really manage it well, this investment will surely paid off. Hope to see more apps over at the Ovi store to ensure that it is easier to attract people. Seeing Nokia rising up to the challenge surely is interesting, and from here, I can only hope for the best from them as they seem to be heading the right direction from this Nokia N9.
