How dice player can read other storage/microsd card from the player without using file manager?
go to setting > list setting > media folder -> set as /mnt

Honeycomb 3.1 has been roll out 06/07/2011 through OTA

I've changed to custom ROMS / leaked HC3.1 ROM but did not do any backup to revert to old version 1.139.04 to be able to received HC3.1. How Could I revert to 1.139.04?
There are 2 ways to revert:
1) Send to ACER service center HQ at Persiaran Sime UEP, Subang (this has been done by an ICONIA user in Facebook)
2) Follow this steps which I've tested and able to update HC3.1 OTA.

A quick guide on flashing rom ( more detail than what you can read at XDA ):
compiled by benny888

NOTE : you need to copy the downloaded rom zip file to the tablet INTERNAL SD card NOT external card

1. Download AcerRecoveryInstaller from Market . Launch the app

2. Switch off Iconia

3. Press down the vol button ( near the power switch ) and press the power button. You will see ACER splash screen and some small white words appearing at the top. Let go both buttons. The tab will boot into recovery mode

4. Select Backup/Restore - restore your present rom first

5. Using the vol buttons to scroll, select clear cache partition. Than scroll to Advanced , select clear dalvik cache

NOTE : Use POWER button to select your choices

5. NEXT Select install zip - follow the next step to select, browse using the vol up/down button to the rom zip file and press POWER button to select

IMPORTANT : It is important also to select clear data/factory reset if you are moving from one rom cook to another. If you are flashing first time, this is compulsory.

I have a handson test about half hour each only on the Transformer, Xoom and Iconia before deciding to buy the Iconia. I'd not say which is better . As in all gadgets, all has its pros and cons. We normally buy a specific one if we can accept its cons and find its pro is more important

I choose the Iconia : FULL USB port, micro SD and 32 GB memory - RM 1499 with free case n 2 years warranty

The Transformer has a nicer display ( not important feature as I find the Iconia is acceptable if you don't compare ). The USB and microSD is not on unit but on the keyboard dock. If I want to buy the Transformer I have to buy the keyboard dock - total costs RM 1799. I will not be using the keyboard at all as if I wish to carry a tablet with a keyboard, I am better off carrying my MacBook Air 11" which offers more solutions. So I will be wasting another RM 300 without any use. If I don't buy the keyboard dock, next time if I want to sell it - it'd be difficult as everyone expects to have the keyboard dock which is its major selling point

This is not true, but TF does have microSD slot on the tablet itself. On the dock, and it have full size SDcard slot instead smile.gif

i like this a500 base on the spec and price it is selling but then at 10.1 screen is a bit large to carry around beside the person. I just brought a SGS tab for my father as a present and after setting it up for senior citizen UI, i gave it to my father. The SGS tab size is is nice to carry around but it is getting a bit old school IMO. And SGS tab is the same price with A500 which is more advance not to mention android 3.1 .
Can u guys/user offer opinion whether it is troublesome to carry it around as normal use to support yr android phone or maybe i just have to wait for the SGS tab2 or the acer A101 which i feel maybe more convenient?

Did you upgrade to 3.01 ( Acer_A500_1.141.04_COM_GEN1 ) : check it at settings/about tablet

If you have not , just do it at Settings/About tablet/System Update - the download will take about 15-20 mins
Before you do the update, make sure any original default apps which are removed/or freeze are installed back. If not you will not have a successful update

I did read some users having such shutdown issues and was solved with the update

Nothing beats the portability and convenience of the 7". The SGS tab is my highly recommended 7" tablet after comparing it with my other HTC Flyer 7". I only use the Iconia at home, mostly in bed before sleep - lazying at the sofa

@exkaizen - add me to user list please.

I choose iconia mainly to read news, threads, books, magazine, etc. As 10' vertical is just nice for reading. Some times I play media files mounting to USB, external harddrives.

Besides, when bore I play limited casual games such as air attacks, fruit ninja stuff.

The only complaint I have is its weight, as I read a lot so can imagine holding a 800gm electronic stuff too long.

I was holding a 1 kg ipad for 8 months. Than it was consider a light tablet.
Down the road probably in a year we will see 600 GM 10 inch tablets - the continual growth of miniaturisatiin

IMHO, For me SGT better as it can play most of popular video codecs (its samsung excel point) and cheaper than flyer happy.gif. Phone function is a plus.

Flyer for those who love htc sense ui and its proprietary pen system, both I don't use at all. Also is more expensive. It is still officially selling for rm2499 vs rm1499 for Gtab. You can get AP sets about rm2k
basically beside these major difference, both performance about similar no significant differences
I don't find the flyer 1.5 ghz chip vs Gtab 1 ghz any difference. Maybe better for games but I don't play games
The phone function in the Gtab is indeed a bonus
At a price difference of rm1000 definately the tab is a better buy

Despite the weight, I can now carry a moving library and book shelves. I have a study room full of books decorated in old British style. But over last few years I fly a lot so with this tab I am done after work in hotel. Plus no need to keep hardcopies which is burying my room. Plus point for oconia. is USB where I can move things easier.

One is a smartphone and one a tablet. Just from performance point of view, UI slickness, browsing : SGS II if I give 10 points, the Gtab will score a 5. It is like driving a 2000 cc Honda Accord car after getting off a 1000 cc perodua

I have updated to 3.01. the shutdown occured a lot less. so in order for me not to feel the problem... i set the sleep time after 10minutes... if i dont use it for more than 10minute... i just shut it down.. hopefully the 3.1 update will settle this problem. otherwise happy with this iconia

Different user has different needs for their tablets. I bought the iPad than for its portability as there were no other light notebooks around. I have used the ipad for 8 months but I replaced it with the new MacBook Air 11" as it was similar in size/weight and could do so much more than the ipad

The iPad is great as a consumer consumption gadget , not as a work creation gadget. I was looking for a tablet that can give me these 2 features and it was met in the Android Galaxy Tab 7" . I could do so much more efficient stuffs on it vs the iPad. It was really portable - I can just slip it inside my baggy long pants side pockets and even my 3/4 shorts side pockets

I bought the Iconia just to get a feel of Honeycomb. My tablet of choice is still the 7" for its portability

I have posted my comments about the ipad vs the Galaxy Tab at the official Galaxy Tab thread : http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1845083 , read post # 2 Q 21
and you will understand why the ipad is not suitable for MY usage , not necessary yours

the ipad remains a great stand alone gaming gadget and its great app store ; other than that its other features - browsing, email, office , file management loses out to the Android tablets. Well iOS5 has much improvements - lets await for it on ipad2 and ipad 3 than

Just run the 3g apk file will do. It will create mobile network in your settings/wireless network. Those ADB push methods were the earlier development, just ignore it
Those propritary telco modems might have issue you can try. Flashing the modem could do it

Uncle Benny, is this mean that I can run my celcom bb USB with this tablet to access Internet? If can, waooo....my be my choice. Xoom 3G seem too expensive for me now...huhuuhuhuh

Use the celcom huawei alternative e173 model will work. The celcom supplied usb modem built in celcom software might have issue but if you flsdh this modem to stock rom it will definitely work. This celcom modem is in the approved modem list for iconia. So another way buy the original huawei e173 n plug in your celcom card

Uncle Benny, i check the google for celcom huawei e173 and it look the same with what i have now. But, i bit confuse because from the celcom broadband manager > Tools > Choose Device, showing E1550.

Is that mean i have to buy a new modem as you advise?

Your comment much appreciated.

Just run the 3g apk file will do. It will create mobile network in your settings/wireless network. Those ADB push methods were the earlier development, just ignore it
Those propritary telco modems might have issue you can try. Flashing the modem could do it

Thank you for yr reply Benny888
Just the noob question,I read all the pages on the xda forum (18pages) but i might probably miss out ,i cant see any apk in there, only the 3g-usb-stock1-zip file and i got the zip downloaded but still no apk?
can u enlighten me on where the apk is?
Thanks in advance.

Definitely and the modem gets warm /slight hot very fast. It will drain average at least 10-20% your notebook battery every hour depending on how strong /weak the 3G signals. I use the YES HUddle - is even worse - it gets HOT, I mean really HOT just an hour using it - the YES huddle can last only 5 hours

TIPS from Cyberkewl lowyat forumer at his EEE Pad thread: QUOTE

So you've downloaded a bunch of nice HD wallpapers with just about the right resolution for your honeycomb tablet, but then when you try to set the wallpaper in the honeycomb gallery, you realised that the crop tool isn't doing such a great job at cropping your wallpaper especially for landscape view. So what do you do? I'll introduce you a very nice application that does the dirty work for you and have screenshots of the original wallpaper that i've downloaded with the one that i've loaded up after using the tool. Sorry for so many question from the noobiest about android, but willing to learn before getting a tablet or maybe 2...heheheheh.

1) I try Professor Google and dont give me direct answer why and advantages for unlock usb 3g modem.

2) I will surely learn how to "flash your usb modem to stock rom" later.

If someone already have use 3g usb modem with iconia A500, appreciate if can give some views of experiences.

Until now, this is the choice for me to get android 10 inch with 3G access. Xoom 3G too expensive, SGT 8.9/10.1 with 3G dunno will reach our country.

All recovery solutions need root as access to system files needed - this is applicable to ALL smartphones

I got my yesterday.
I have encountered one particular nasty bug with bluetooth. After 1 successful file transfered from my SGS, all subsequent transfer failed. No matter how i tried, even removing the profile and rescan the bluetooth device.
Very interesting. Any one have any idea with this?

Beside buggy bluetooth file transfer, others thing seems fine so far.

Add my name in the list pls. Even though I bought it for my mom, I'm still maintaining it and will use it from time to time.

My experience after using the iconia for 3 days, Tablets are something that I can live without, my android phone has everything I need (schedule, contacts, occasional browsing on the go). Even though I work in IT, I don't go on the internet or turn on the computer that much outside of the office so after a while I don't have any use for the tablet at home. I still depend more on my notebook for docs, browsing and (important!) using Garmin Mapsource. Until I can edit and manage GPS files on Android, I don't see myself using the tablet that much.

Good thing I didn't buy it for myself, if not it would be a waste of my money. smile.gif

Why I chose iconia over the rest? Primarily for the USB port, so that my mom can download photos from her digital camera without having to ask us to do it for her, and be able to view those photos without having to learn how to use a PC/notebook. I think tablets are very user friendly for older people, just touch what you want from a visual menu. If I were to get a tablet for myself (which won't happen in the near future), I would still chose iconia due to the same reasons benny888 listed out previously.

ok, found the root cause of my bluetooth file transfer woe. Looks like HC is the culprit blocking the .apk file from transfering thru. bluetooth.

You cannot see the external micro sdcard from pc. This affects all bc tablets . Wait for Google to address it or some solutions from xda

I am using dna 16gb class 10 and 32gb class 10. Cheaper than others, no issues with
it. Have yet to read about problems from other users at the lowyat forums
However many bad reports on patriot cards esp on incompatible issues

Hi guys, I read through the old acer iconia a500 thread ,continue to read from here. I have questions below

1. according to the first page, the card size is up to 64 GB. Is this include or exclude the internal 32GB? will it recognize 64 gb card? so I will have 96Gb in total if I insert a 64Gb card? drool.gif

2. I notice some of you have upgrade to HC 3.1, did it able to handle 1080?

3. Is there any light bleeding issues for this tablet? I read the whole Asus transformer thread, their problems a bit (>1) scare me off. And I really like the USB on tablet and the physical orientation lock switch.

4. I'm thinking to get one soon. Anything/ any issues I should check/aware while I buy?

Hi...

1. I haven't test with 64gb... but as per specs from most of the sites, it stated maximum card is 64GB.
2. I haven't update yet; have to check with others icon_question.gif
3. My unit don't have light bleeding issue.
4. The only problem to me currently, my microsd card not detected in PC when connect tablet to PC (its HC3.0 issue not hardware issue); Have to check with others. icon_question.gif

those interest in HC 3.1 just use the actual released leaked. I have given up using the cooked ones as the more they cook it the more bugs. if you wish to try the cook roms use their initial release eg Picasso below 1.6, Dexter p1-8, honey villian1.
must say the official leak is very stable n yet to see serious bugs. s snsppier than 3.01

YES no need ; your recovery will remain too. If you flash the original leak, you will lose root and recovery.

Your finger is better than even the best stylus eg I finger good quality expensive about rm120. But still loses out to own finger. You want to buy cheap don't bother just waste money
I have bought several type pen stylus from rm 30 to rm120 all waste money only. Nothing beats the natural response of own fingers

I was thinking to get one for my nephews for drawing on the tablet like in the video.
After listening to your experience, I'm going to wait for a better combination for the purpose.

What do you mean. It works very well but display is just a small screen on the iconia. Just install app, launch it - no special tricks or settings required

for those who join the sikai case group purchase
the seller was found another case, which he and me think that is better protection
and it just cost RM75, which is more cheaper than sikai case rclxms.gif
you may choice to buy this or still remain to buy the sikai case
for those already make payment, you may email to inform the seller and he will refund the extra money

the new casing is far more .... "efficient" in design, I should say. Even the dock part is left exposed, so that at least there's an option.

It may be my wishlist but I do hope that Acer remodel their keyboard docks to have battery charge too. biggrin.gif

The symbol simply shows the tablet cannot find any rom file. All to be flash rom zip MUST BE in the EXTERNAL micro SD card NOT internal SD card

when you launch these, error message says an app acer### ( cannot rember exact app name) force closure - go to settings/application/manage application look for this app and clear data. if you can't see this app look for Acer content folder clear data
if you are using juice defender remove it as this app causes such problems too

first time you launch titanium, select problems box, you will be prompted to upgrade super user status, choose it download and upgrade super user status

Benny, this morning i cleared data successfully, superb. On the move now, once settle down I will fix TB.

I think what went wrong with my update is I did not ensure sufficient free space in my external sd card during cwm full backup, so i took some time to replace another one before continue with remaining steps.

will observe stock 3.1 n decude whether to keep or flash back custom

Hi all, I got this tablet last week and pretty happy about it.

Everything is perfect. But, I do experience one interesting thing - my battery never show 100% charge up. I plug in the AC supply, it shows 100%. The moment i remove the AC supply, it shows 99%. Have experienced 4 cycles already. Anyone notice this? Thanks.

I did not use juice defender on this tab, another mistake is I did not unfreeze some of the app before flashing. Also went into boot loop so i wiped back factory reset.

Edit: Luckily now all my data successfully retored back.

Thanks Uncle Benny for your tips on TB.

I'm having this problem as well but after some digging i found out that this is due to the screen reading is not refresh properly. Just go to setting>status then go back out to main screen, this force it to show the correct value again.

Hopefully the new update will address this issue.

Look like honeycomb is still premature . I reduce to use 3 screen and I can feel the smoothness. One question: how to reduce numbers of homescreen? I read somewhere no such option yet for HC?

No wifi connection problem for me on official leak 3.1 Last time when I flash Picasso 1.07. I have couples of auto reboot issue. I read 1.08 is not stable as well. so decided to flash official. So far so good but only my 2nd day on official leak, time will tell.

Update fails everytime. Called the acer support and the first lady i talked to didn't even know about the tablet, then talked to a different guy and he told me to do factory reset first. Haven't tried it yet but seems kinda stupid that a factory reset is needed for an update. This is really dissapointing. I was really looking forward to the update. Wil try it again after a full backup and post the results later.

No need factory reset
make sure any of the dfault apps you have freeze or removed are defrost and installed back
the update will scan your tablet for default completeness before it download

Firstly I do not have a backup sad.gif and was using CWM to install Dexter Iconia a lot more ROM and also updated the kernel
I had downgraded to Acer_A500_0.000.00_1.104.03_COM_GEN1 but still not able to update. I check and the kernel is new hence the OTA update is not available indicated we had the latest so I believe that is the problem. How do I get back the old kernel so that I can flash back. Can't find in XDA

It seems like a lot of people are having this problem, myself included.
I have to did this three time in order to get it done. The first 2 tries failed with "update is invalid".
Only after i did a factory reset then it allowed me to proceed with no problem. Weird.

I still haven't managed to update. Anyways, I looked around and found that you can check the type of error ot is by going to /cache/recovery and open the last_log file in a text editor. At the end of the file it would say the type of error you're facing when trying to update. If it is simply some missing or frozen apps then you can just replace or unfreeze them. Mine say verification failed and I Google but to no availed just yet. We'll see if anyone comes up with some solution. All the best.

You have to be rooted in order to do that. And it is not the recovery file. Recovery is the folder, there is a log in there. That's the one you wanna check out.

Added on July 8, 2011, 1:58 amUpdated successfully at last. Restored recovery image and unrooted. The update went smooth.can't really really feel that much of a difference in speed but the GPS lock is way way faster.

Just go to settings/about /system update

You cannot see the external micro SD card yet - it is a Honeycomb issue - affects all HC tablets. Hopefully newer updates will resolve this

for those which cannot update, you may go to acer services center to request revert back -> from one A500 user
Billy Chia acer subang, i m on firmware 1.141.04 from XDA which cant update OTA 3.1. acer revert back to early 1.016 then 1.139 and final honeycomb 3.1.

you may do that if you wish to use stock firmware or go for leak 3.1 base firmware system
cheers

manage to revert back 1.139.04 using below method:

From XDA:
I have got my Tablet back to 1.139.05_COM_GEN1 using the CWM method

I got stuck at the md5 checksum error too and here is overcome this error.

After you have installed Acer_A500_0.000.00_1.016.01_COM_GEN1 go into CWM and make a full backup. Copy the backup created by CWM to the PC then replace the files with the ones extracted out from the 1.139.02.zip in page 1. There are two missing file in the 1.1.39.02.zip. They are Data.img and Cache.img. So you will be using your own two files you have created with CWM. In total you should have 10 Files in the folder as show below
boot.img, cache.img, data.img, flexrom.img, recovery.img, system.img, mmcblk0_start.img, nandroid.MD5, UID.txt, .android_secure.img

I used MD5Summer to create a new set of md5 checksums and use hex editor to replace the new checksums in the original nandroid.md5 file. After you have generate and replace the MD5 in nandroid.md5, you should be able do a Full restore using CWM.
Next Got to download "Acer_A500_1.016.01_1.139.05_COM_GEN1" and decrypt it. Copy to your MicroSD. For me, I take out the MicroSD card and copy to the MicroSD directly with SD slot. and use CWM to install the update.

Note For me I only try "Acer_A500_1.016.01_1.139.05_COM_GEN1" and did not try "Acer_A500_1.016.01_1.139.04_COM_GEN1". Try this at your own Risk.

You definitely can see all the storage internal sd card, ext sd card and usb thumb drive using any file manager. Just use the file manager to manage files between all these 3 in the tablet utself

For those don't have backup of stock ROM and currently in custom ROM / in leaked ROM and still want to have OTA update to Honeycomb 3.1 (I'm able to update to HC3.1 yesterday after use the method), kindly refer to FAQ section at first page.

Note: Try this at your own risk

Anyone tried to hook up a digital camera to the Iconia yet? I tried it last weekend, it doesn't seem to recognize a Fujifilm camera. Thumbdrive is detected just fine.

Will try again once I've updated to 3.1.

I do not care enuf to use stylus but here some insight from benny888

Your finger is better than even the best stylus eg I finger good quality expensive about rm120. But still loses out to own finger. You want to buy cheap don't bother just waste money
I have bought several type pen stylus from rm 30 to rm120 all waste money only. Nothing beats the natural response of own fingers

exkaizen, the material looks ok to me but I'm not a fussy guy. For sure it doesn't look super-duper leather expensive, but it doesn't look like a low quality product. All the holes are where they're supposed to be to allow access to the device's ports and buttons.

It has a nice magnet lock to keep the cover in place when closed.

Custom roms are cooked up according to the taste of the creator. Usually it is more bloated but that is not always the case. You have to read the description of the rom to know more about that. They have the same base so to say which one is smoother or if one is smoother than other you have to personally test it out or ask around the users. If you ask me then I would say that custom roms which are heavily customized may prove to be more buggy than the stock. But please do keep in mind sometimes its the exact opposite. It depends from rom to rom so the only way to know which one is smooth just try it out. Its not that hard to have custom rom running on your tab, it takes less than 30 minutes, and then if you don't like it just revert back to your stock.

new OTA update 4.010.30, update from Acer_A500_4.010.22_COM_GEN1. Much smoother for me, since i never wipe apps or factory reset since day 1 with all updates install continuously.

FYI, the .22 was downloaded from XDA. Meaning manual update does not broke the OTA updates (yet) which most asked/afraid.

I believe this due to 4.010.22 is an official rom but for other region.... as long as its official rom you will still receive ota even though manually updates.

Also using Thumb keyboard now, 3 layouts also. Used Hacker Keyboard b4, but its become lag. The arrow keys is the main reason to choose my keyboard, still too difficult to put the cursor exactly the place in a sentence/word.

Also using Thumb keyboard now, 3 layouts also. Used Hacker Keyboard b4, but its become lag. The arrow keys is the main reason to choose my keyboard, still too difficult to put the cursor exactly the place in a sentence/word.

*
Easy way is to use XDA Full Update 3.1 (Not OTA) install to SD_Acer_A500_4.010.22_COM_GEN1.zip then once install do a system update and it brings it to .38. I just did it.

upgraded my to Acer_A500_4.010.40_COM_GEN1 this morning. The process was generally smooth, unlike to 3.1OTA.
This time even if i did remove some system app. I can still install the update with no problem.

The root status is no affected with this minor update.

Yesterday tested with my A500, the battery life is very good. With 5hours+ gaming (Plants vs Zombies), the bar still in halfway mark. But this might due to i have freeze a lot of un-use apps. from the system using titanium pro.

Hello, I am currently considering on A500 or Transformer. Have read thru some reviews but still have some questions. Would appreciate it if anyone can help out.

The main purpose is for business presentation use. Mainly using Microsoft Excels. Wifi surfing, checking mails, reading ebooks and some games and musics.

And will either be possible to run flash software (which require installation)?

Thank you for reading and helping. Appreciate all the feedback.

Both can do the tasks mentioned... FYI, only simple excels formula available in tab.

flash software do you mean thorugh browser or dedicated flash player?

ICONIA - can plug-in external hdd / thumbdrive.
Transformer - need docking

Actually no major issues unlike the Transformer - you pop over there and read ; they have so much problems especially with the dock. Most of the major issues I do not find it in the Iconia

what's yur expectation for ur tabs?

if screen - choose Transformers
if full size USB port - ICONIA (as its on tablet; transformers have the port but on the dock)**ICONIA can plug in 2.5" external HDD & USB thumbdrive**
if internal storage size - ICONIA (32GB)
if need docking - Transformers (but heard they have problem)

but benny888 mention Transformers have more major problem (especially on the dock) then ICONIA.

So suggest u go through transformers thread and get to knoe what is the major problem they are facing (whether it affect your expectation specs)... as far as ICONIA, they don't have major problem hence the thread quite dull... T.T fyi, previously ICONIA have update issue which is sometime not able to updates but there's solution for it... as for custom roms for ICONIA, there are 6/7 custom roms you can choose besides the stock rom

Tested HTC Flyer, XOOM 3G, & Iconia A500 just now.

Flyer lagging the most, followed by XOOM. Surprisingly, Zoom's browser hanged(had to force close), but Iconia... much much smoother a lot than Xoom!!!

Both Iconia and Xoom running on 3.0 only. Acer's doing great! drool.gif

One more thing... if there is no display, I could see dots on the screen on Iconia, but not on Xoom. Different capacitive tech?

For me, the screen looks just like xoom,... fine pixels and clear. Looks like TF101 thread fills with issues and bugs on wifi and video lags.

Oh yeah, I tested the car racing game... smooth like ipad's. smile.gif

BTW, no one mention that the back of the ACER A500 is brushed aluminum? i like the cold and metal feels holding it, plus not fingerprints magnet smile.gif
Also, due to this aluminum, some reviews said the build quality is much better.

Agree, i am happy with the battery life too, i once played the "Game Dev Story" straight 12 hours non-stop until the battery drained, with 35% brightness (which is normal brightness, never adjust over 35% because it will be too bright for me! which is good anyway), 90% volume. The game is 2D though.

(thank gods it is 12 hours, or else cant stop playing, the game is very addictive laugh.gif )

true, due to (strangely) most people go for Asus, less supplier carrying accessories for A500. i bought all the screen protector, Sikai MibroFiber case, micro HDMI cable from ebay. Next one would be the A500 silicon case (3 available now), car charger (1 USA seller, expensive postage), car holder (a fews, not needed yet) .

have not try custom rom yet, the official rom is quite good for me, never experience the battery % charge problem, maybe you need to reset battery in the CWM?

Anyway, here is the 4.010.40 Full official update from Acer http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread...33#post15861033
, was meant for upgrade from 1.139.04, but you can extract the zip after decrypt with Acer Decrypter and update with CWM, clear Dalvik cache. (always backup full rom before update)
I use it to update my 4.010.38 (US version) back to 4.010.40, app and settings stay after 2nd reboot.

Saw a number of generic tablet holders on lyn and lelong. Never seen a specific holder yet, I don't know if we'll ever see it unless the sale numbers pick up.

I use gps test to err test the gps function. Put it side by side with my moto defy then compared the time they took to get a signal lock. Unfortunately even with faster fix my iconia still took around 30 seconds while defy took just 9 seconds. I just did the test twice so I dunno how accurate it is. Test was done on 2nd floor of my terrace house near the windows. I haven't really test the gps outdoor though.

Anyway, the iconia is somehow an underrated device, probably because there's no advert about it and then maybe because its an acer? But so far I think it worth the money spent, we got full usb port, Dolby speaker which sound great even at full volume and out of the box support for microsd card. A bit heavy maybe but I use it with a stand most of the time. 2 thumbs up for the iconia smile.gif

As for the GPS, 30 seconds should consider good since mobile phone uses AGPS, which "assisted" by cell towers to locate your position while iconia is pure GPS, although also listed as AGPS, but without phone capability, i assume the "A"GPS is limited.

I used once on the road, with Sygic, the route is accurate. But most of the time i just use the mobile phone Sygic, since i to not have A500 car holder and car charger if the A500 running low battery.

There's an Acer booth at the ground floor entrance of Digital Mall Section 14 PJ. They have a unit for testing.

At the sleeve that comes with it looks solid and nice!

When I tested it with stock HC3.0, it was already so smooth! I wonder how's the performance if it is running on 3.1

Yes, normally this is how android devices get update OTA and install easily without problem. Too bad I'm also quite new to android,u can try browse few pages back or the 1st page on how to update. Some master here like Benny may come back to check and provide some answers. You should try download again , try disable the screen auto sleep and wireless off when screen off that broke the download? Note down the message if failed again.

You definately want to get 3.1 ,not only performance a boost, extra features like support more USB devices, example play games with USB gamepad, smoother low profile 1080p movie playback etc.

I m iconia a500 owner for 2month now.
Totally worth the investment.

I choose to buy a Android honeycomb tablet than Froyo/Gingerbread tablet / iPad cause:
1. Tegra base processor that powerful enough (see how fast HTC desire HD become a moderate phone now, compare to SGS2, LG optima 2X, Mot. Atrix..)
2. Tegra base processor is the only processor that HC is supporting. Upgrading to new HC should just come to Vendor decision than technical bottlenet.
3. 10" inch tablet is sufficent big for every daily PC work or media playback.
(Reason for Acer: reasonable prices, USB full size + 32G + no docking required, why need carry a dock around when we want a tablet).

But I heard recently:
1. Android Icecream sandwich is preferring TI OMAP 4 processor.
2. Tegra base processor may have issue working on 4G. Heard Mot. Bionic is going to switch to TI OMAP 4.
3. Tegra 2 rendering isn't as good as TI OMAP 4. (That why NvDia is such hurry to announce the kal-el processor that claim to support 1440p)
4. nVdia CEO is disappointed during the early launch of HC tablet, as most THD app isn't ready nor Android Market.

at least,
There is still someone working on Xoom 2 & Eee Pad transformer 2 that may use Kal-El processor.

The best solution to consumer:
1. ICS android support both Tegra and TI Omap4 (TI for phone, Tegra for tablet)
2. Acer still mercy those Tegra 2 tablet and get upgrade to ICS android.
(Heard Google promise 18month support & upgrade for new android from it launch date)

else we r on XDA custom rom future

Sorry I m to use to Windows environment. A pc that last many years with enabling us to upgrade windows version,
(if the hardware support that).

No.
This is my observation:
1. I plug in the DC cable.
2. Press the sleep button
3. leave it for few hour later.
4. press the sleep button to wakeup.
5. the battery Icon show the same battery level before sleep, and no "charging icon" too
6. wait a few second later, battery level show full bar.

For me this is cosmetic issue.
And From froyo practise (no battery icon on status bar), i use to check the battery from "Setting"

I got it free from my CSL Mi410, which is RM 799 only. I went to Lowyat and was told that microHDMI is super expensive. Some quoted me RM 150+. So, I decided to pick up this cheap Android 2.3.4 as a toy. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

I got it free from my CSL Mi410, which is RM 799 only. I went to Lowyat and was told that microHDMI is super expensive. Some quoted me RM 150+. So, I decided to pick up this cheap Android 2.3.4 as a toy. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Gprs or GPS?

I assume u asked about GPS. If u have a dedicated navigation software(with built in maps) like papago, sygic etc then its possible to use it without connecting to internet.

Our A500 is known to have GPS and not Agps. Due to honeycomb's restriction, it will now function as Agps.

My colleague's tf101 able to detect his own location in Google maps with wifi switched off!

U can always ask google for the answers. Just type your questions like u ask here and i'm pretty sure u would get at least a few correct answers.

Btw, to remove or add widget, just press and hold. Drag to bin to remove.

And WTH! (Welcome to Honeycomb)

just use it as it is for now, its better and safer for new users of android. make sure to do system update to honeycomb 3.1 if your system is still 3.0

by default if you connect to the internet, you should get a notification on a system update. if not then maybe your tablet is already updated to the latest version.

i myself wouldn't consider custom rom yet. everything is what i want from a tablet right now. i love using the tablet with a mouse biggrin.gif

I not yet try mouse or keyboard, but my pen drive is working fine with the full USB, the full USB is the reason I dropped Transformer and go for A500!

But when I try my 500GB HDD, it doesn't work, it's in FAT32. I read from forum they said A500 might need sometime to scan the drive to make it readable, will try again tonight. blush.gif

yes it can detect FAT32 but it takes quite a while to scan the disk. if u plug the disk into windows pc, windows also does the scan but we can skip the process. but as for android, unfortunately we cannot skip it. i think the scan process depends on how big the disk size and how many files are in it.

When I bought it last week, i did ask, and straight away they minus RM50 from the RM1599.

Sadly, my first unit with tiny hole on the glass screen (not on the surface, but from the inside). So i changed to 2nd unit.

Went home and tested 2nd unit, screen bleed a bit on one side, with 3 dead pixels spotted.

Arranged to change they agreed, and during exchange, i open up 2 brand new boxes, ( i was like a person who has opened up 4 new sets of Iconia with single purchase!) found both boxes with defects (tiny chipped holes from the inside).

That's crazy, I wonder if SenQ received all defected Iconias from ACER Malaysia?

Tomorrow, I will ask them to refund liow... cant take it anymore! mad.gif

I still like Iconia... smooth OS without S/W problems to me so far sad.gif

For screen bleed, very simple (view in total darkness with max brightness setting), look at the 4-edges of the screen in total darkness, if you notice imbalance brightness if there is a bleed.

For dead pixels, do download the test s/w from android market.

Wow, luckily you told me, after I inspect mine, there are 2 tiny holes from the inside on the screen!

No screen bleeding in my case.

I think I will go for an exchange later, do I need to bring along the box? hmm.gif

Wow, SenQ really superb! I love their service. I complaint to the lady that this is the 4th unit having problem, and she does expect me to ask for refund. So I did.

Thumbs up for SenQ customer service! thumbup.gif

They are now processing to refund the amount back from my credit card! (approx. 2 weeks)

I will miss Iconia sad.gif

Oh something i wanna ask. What's the benefit when the tablet has USB ports?

Can plug in digi/celcom/maxis usb modem and connect to the internet?

And what else?

What about iconia screen display wise? Not as clear as other 16M colours tablet right?

USB port can direct plug ur portable HDD, flash drive, mouse, keyboard and anything that come with USB!

Can use modem if you root it with some modification on the ROM.

Display wise if you compare, yes, it is a bit dull, but still acceptable to me, depend on individual. whistling.gif

You don't compare , you will be happy with it. The diaplay, I'd say is decent and nice. Most important you don't hear about bleeding issues as commonly reported in TF and ipad2. Every product has its pros n cons - the pros in the Iconia is its price and features offered : 32GB, ext micro SD slot, full USB all just for RM 1.4-1.5K
It'd be nice if we can have a 10/10 tablet but than be prepared to pay a 11/10 price for it

I found the best player that able to play MKV... DICEPLAYER

pros of DICEPLAYER:
- able to play smooth 720P mkv movie without remux
(haven't test with 1080p)
- able to show embedded subs in mkv
(haven't test external subs)
- able to play AC3 sound codec when play
- use hardware acceleration

Added on August 14, 2011, 6:10 amHow dice player can read other storage/microsd card from the player without using file manager?

go to setting > list setting > media folder -> set as /mnt

wondering does it able to read the sd/cf/ms card if i connect a all-in-1 card reader through the usb port?

planning to get an android tablet soon, looking at acer and samsung tab 10.1 (waiting 4 the launch, better colour display, batt last longer, thinner & lighter). i'm guessing samsung tab 10.1 3g around rm1899 but is has none of the connectivity port. The usb and sd card adapter cost rm109 and so the total would be rm2009 while compare to acer rm1549 without 3g. what is your opinion, which 1 will you get ??

Your needs is met by the iconia - is a good worthwhile buy
The tab 10.1 is slicker n faster ui, nicer display, its thin and lightweight but poor connection options

One thing that's nice in 3.1, now when I connect a digital camera there's an interface for importing photos into the tablet. This is exactly why I bought this tablet, so good thing it works now!

If u r using the tab for:
- view email
- play game
- social network update

basically, what google said, if u r consumption the content from internet,
u r good with Samsung galaxy 10.1.
(I think reason to pickup a tab and not phone with this reason is only the screen size)

If u need a travel gadget that replace ur notebook. I suggest Acer.

My own reason of acer or tablet:
1. I will be traveling so I pick a tab that have conn for notebook replacement
2. I want a device is always on that is use very little power. I want to check something online anytime i want.
3. Mobility
4. the last not least, the price tag.

I tried this on 3.0, it is not working.
When u r trying on 3.1, where do u transfer the photo to?
HDD or ext sdcard or internal flash?

Good news to audiophile!

Added on August 15, 2011, 4:49 pmQ: How to stop the music player from scanning the USB drive e.g. pendrive, portable HDD and etc?

mine has 1 dead pixel. upon booting the tablet i will see a blue dot when the screen is totally black.

since my tablet has 1 year warranty period, maybe its ok to wait until the 11th month for the warranty claim and then get a new unit? biggrin.gif

How do you compare the iconia and the galaxy 10.1? My friend got 1 today and it seems like the tab is more responsive and faster.

Tab 10.1 is indeed very much more responsive and every process is faster. Very obvious, can say no lag at all

got mine Friday last week, so far done some serious browsing and games, found it very flexible in terms of reading other files from usb sticks.
Wish it would kill some of the unused apps more quickly and sometimes it lags a bit. All in all, enjoying the experience smile.gif

You need root and install the 3G usb apk

If you have a telco modem and since is preconfigured, you can always flash the modem to a generic type to accept all telcos.

Yeah, if possible I'd like to like in the US you can get a 2nd hand car for 5k. However since that's not possible of course I have to take loan for necessary items. But taking a loan for luxury items is a big no for me, for example do you really need to buy a RM2k mobile phone via 1 year installment when a RM500 phone would do? And do I really need the tablet when I already have a notebook?

Anyway, we're off topic. Have fun paying off those installments! smile.gif
