Hi everyone! I finished my internship in corrosion consultant firm. I found that the job prospect as a corrosion engineer is very good since corrosion control field is a high-demand niche market. With 5 years of experiences and some professional certificates, a corrosion engineer can get pay as high as >10K (told by O&G insiders).
But most of the corrosion service providers, they are looking for experienced corrosion engineers and they only offer so little (RM1.8k to RM2k) for fresh graduates. Any advices from seniors here about how to start a career in corrosion field ( CP, RBI, integrity ) ? I did my research and found out a list of companies deal with corrosion: mach3 engineering, norimax, corrtrol, best wide, intetech, ISIS, MPE, iicorr, wilson taylor. But most of them do not have any opening for fresh graduates. any advices? |

QUOTE(max_cruz @ Mar 4 2011, 07:22 PM) am graduated as geophysics student, but still even my friend with higher cgpa than me choose to go to work in other field. seems we all stop trying to go into the field, but hey i would take an offer from them anytime. Non tech role is pretty low for SLB especially now, you're better off where you are at if you're looking at only pay. If you look at experience and a big jump later, you need to slog some years and hopfully with enough exposure you'll get where you want to go. I left SLB after 3 1/2 years and a promotion.. I'm now with an operator, turun pangkat but higher pay..Lessons learned from a service company is priceless, but pay pack and benefits, no one beats an operator.but considering everything u say, i guess i'll try and visit this year usm career fair again. |

I happened to come across this topic whilst updating some information and thought I should share a few tips for those interested in the O&G industry.
I have been in this industry for approximately 3 years now (previously I.T) and a few tips I have for those interested in joining the Malaysia O&G industry. 1) Always keep yourself updated on the latest engineering trends and technology available in the industry, I find this a very informative and productive information sharing forum: http://www.eng-tips.com/ 2) Always remember that what you learn does not necessarily apply to your work. I noticed many engineers these days tend to follow everything by the book without researching further which causes a lot of wrong specifications which in turn gives a bigger headache to the procurement division who are unable to source a material which is no longer in production 3) Always spare some time to listen to vendors promoting their products. I know some people do not agree to me on this thinking that they are just wanting to see you to sell but they are the ones who are always introducing new technologies and sometimes technical information which helps in your work. Last but not least, never be afraid to raise to your HOD (Head of Department) if you believe there is a better option. E.g Petronas specifications are outdated in some areas and will take awhile to update. Yes, it will take a lot of trouble to raise an issue to the clients but they are always very open to suggestions. I hope this post will be of help to some of those wanting or are just starting out in the O&G industry. |

Tfazuin,I'm not familiar with your jargon, when u say operator, you actually referring to what? Btw isnt geophysicist aren't in tech/operation side (esp the upstream side) Atm, like azreil said, what more important is MAXimizing the exp. hence thats what im looking for. rgds |

In any company, whether it is OnG or not, positions that pay the most are those that has a direct impact towards the well being of the company

I've been in O&g nearly 4 years..since I graduated..I'm quite new in this forum / thread..might be overlooked somewhere..But I think we got only a little group among us that has more than 7 yrs in o&g..
my boss (expat) said this almost everyday to me..engineer only has two paths in their career..especially in o&g..if u are in PMT, than most possibility u'll end up as a manager / director / or leading post in managerial...If u are in design / structural / or technical side..u'll end up being a specialist..so start from our first day in career, we must choose..where we want to go..yes money is 1 thing but exp always paired with money.. just my 2 cent.. :-) |
