Hi, i'm an undergraduate engineering student, graduating very soon.
Would like to know more about O&G field.

From my encounter vf O&G engineers, they r tend to be more highly-paid than other those in other field.
And they travel a lot, i mean, offshore and outstation.
Is this reli so?

Her's my question
What is the job description for an engineer in O&G field?

Yes, O&G workers has a higher paygrade compared to other industries due to several factors. The most obvious reason is, the risks and hazards we encounter at our workplace (or rigsite). O&G workers are specially trained on how to mitigate, react and handle these hazards.
Accidents and injuries are a common incident at the rigsite and they are closely tracked and monitored by safety officer at the rigsite.

Another factor is the rig bonus. (only applicable to workers who work at the rigsite) Apart from the basic salary, O&G workers also receive day rate ranging from RM100 to RM2000 depending on expertise and position. Sometimes these rig bonuses can easily exceed your basic salary if you spend a long period of time at the field.

Engineering in O&G is very broad so it helps to specify what kind of engineering are you referring to. (sales engineering? planning engineer? operation engineer?) Basically, there are rig based engineers (field guys) doing the dirty work and there are office based engineers pushing pencils, planning and making decisions etc etc.

I dunno exactly when, but try to keep an eye on those career fairs in town. Also O&G companies always send their recruiters to local and private universities EVERY YEAR to hunt for fresh blood. Word on the street is they like to hire graduates from UTP, University Teknologi Petronas, so if you have a friend there, hook him up and check with him/her from time to time.

For graduates without any experience in the oilfield, i think this is your best bet. Or you can be persistent and email all major oil companies you can find.
I know the ads on the paper and website always require min 3-5 yrs so it's a bit frustrating i know. Believe me if you knock enough doors, eventually you will find one that will answer your call.

I joined O&G engineering consultancy 16 months ago after grad as piping engineer but now quitting to another field sweat.gif

For those who all O&G engineers are highly paid, that's wrong, at least in Msia. Only those with EXPERIENCE will be highly paid.

i thought its similar with other industry, no?
I think if you compare salary with other industry by years of experiance, you will see quite significant difference as years of experiance increase.

Assuming you are talking about "field jobs", if Im honest with you they always prefer to hire people with engineering background although I have seen people with IT background and a Science degree working in the industry.
