Higher resolution will definitely give a much sharper and higher quality image since its now being rendered with higher amount of pixels in the same amount of screen space. Of course the size and quality of the original image needs to be taken into consideration. There might be some loss if you are trying to render something with lower resolution at full HD but generally for all others you will get a better picture.

Generally speaking, the pros and cons of higher resolution are:

Pros:
1. Overall sharper image and better clarity.
2. Higher resolution will give you more desktop space for placing icons or comparing spreadsheets.
3. 15.6 HD screens costs you some vertical space (your screen is now shorter than the old 15.4 screens), so higher resolutions help to compensate for this lost of horizontal space by letting you view more.
4. Great for movies! Especially if they are high res or HD format!
5. If you can run a game at this high res, you won't need to use AA anymore since everything is already sharp enough just by the screen.
6. If you get a high res screen, you can still adjust things down but with a low res screen, you're stuck with what you have since you can't adjust up.

Cons:
1. Text and font size will be much smaller especially for full HD (however you can increase the DPI to compensate for this). Most people still consider this to be a problem so the best would be to either go see the higher resolutions yourself at a pc store or download a screenshot of someone's 1920x1080 desktop and the scale that down to your current 15" screen to judge the size of the font/text. If you are using Windows 7, Win7 supposedly has much better increased DPI handling that should help with this.
2. Most games won't be able to run at native resolution, meaning that you will need to lower resolution in games. LCD screens have fixed pixels so when lowering resolution, a blending technique is used which can cause some fuzziness depending on LCD hardware.

In the end its up to you though. My personal opinion is that the ATI 4570 really isn't powerful enough to be able to run the latest games (Ex. Crysis, DOW2) at most of the native resolutions anyway. So really resolution for gaming should not be a primary consideration. If you wanted gaming, go for the Studio XPS 16 instead. Some folks on the forums have also been saying they get great image for 1080p even when lowering the res in games. Perhaps some of the others who now have a 1080p screen can confirm this.

Might as well opt for getting overall greater picture quality with the full HD screen especially when the cost of upgrade is so low. I don't think you can find a better deal for a full HD WLED screen from anywhere else at the moment.

Another thing to consider is the actual LCD hardware itself. Based on feedback from outside forums, the studio 15 screen is being supplied by 3 manufacturers - Samsung, AIO, LG. In terms of screen quality for the Studio 15 LCDs, LG and AIO > Samsung. Most people who get 720p tend to get a Samsung screen though, which reportly has slightly worse quality and brightness. Supposedly with 900p or 1080p, are more likely to get AIO or LG as they are the main suppliers. Other lowyat forumers might be able to confirm this by looking at the hardware ID for the monitor they received.

Summary:
720p - lower resolution and image quality but you might be able to run more games at native res.
900p - a good compromise, you get more screen space, sharp images and text should be at the right size. I disagree that this is the worst resolution to get. In fact if you're concerned about text size but still want better resolution, 900p is the way to go.
1080p - great sharpness and quality, a lot of screen space but text might be a tad small (workaround increase dpi) and you aren't likely to be able to run most games at this level.

If your primary use is going to be more towards photography then you would likely enjoy the higher resolution from 900p since it'll let you view your photos at higher pixel rates. To illustrate my point:

1 megapixel camera = 1280x960
2 megapixel camera = 1600x1200
3 megapixel camera = 2048 x 1536
5 megapixel camera = 3008 x 1960

In a way, resolution translates into data. The higher the resolution of your screen, the more of the original image's detail can be displayed which gives pictures greater sharpness and quality.

The exception to this would be if your source image is very low res, then the image might suffer if you try to expand it to fit the higher res screen. If you view it at its normal size, then it will be fine. Since even a lowly 2 megapixel > 1600 x 900, you shouldn't face this problem.

Also if you're into photo editing, you would benefit from higher res because it gives you more screen space to adjust manipulate your images or make comparisons. Ultimately the best way is to see it yourself, I always like to check out the actual resolutions in stores because different people have different preferences.

1 thing to take note when getting a higher resolution monitor at the same size (note: higher resolution DOES NOT equate to bigger size) is that as resolution goes up, possible display area goes up, but font size will go down, and graphic performance in game will go down too...

imo for laptops at 14-15", 1366x768 or 1280x800 is already sufficient... it's good enuf for 720p movies, and strikes a good balance between graphic performance, display area and font size... if u really want Full HD, juz get a monitor... they are dirt cheap now... the price spent on upgrading ur laptop monitor to Full HD can probably get urself a 20" Full HD monitor...

1600x900, with all due respect, is the crappiest resolution u can get... it's not Full HD, but overkill for HD Ready, and still pulls down graphic performance in games...

So you've hooked the laptop up to the TV via a direct HDMI - HDMI connection/cable?

Did you then set the output option in your graphics card settings, to TV/external source?

To activate TV Out:

Connect whatever cable you're using, then reboot your system.

Once it's rebooted, open your graphics card's display options, and click on the video card's TV (/Output Device) tab.
Click Settings --> Advanced --> TV (/Output Device), and choose 'Enable output to TV'.
Different brands of video cards may have slightly different wording of course - i.e. 'Output Device/TV'.

(Restore the display back to your computer monitor by following the above steps, except choose to send the signal to the computer monitor instead of the TV.)

Also double-check the audio output, by right-clicking on the small speaker icon in the taskbar, and making sure it's set for external output (/HDMI)?

EIST and PowerPlay at work...

Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology would dynamically adjust the clock of the CPU (and thus also the voltage needed) based on the CPU resources required...

ATi PowerPlay (or Nvidia Powermizer for Nvidia cards) on the other hand, switches ur graphic card between 2D Mode clock and 3D Mode clock (and thus also the voltage) based on the work load also

at the same time, i think Windows calculate the usage time based on the voltage needed by all the components and come up with a theoratical time... thus u can always see the usage time fluctuating...

This problem however can be solved using hardware display calibration such as Sypder3 Elite. This is an expensive solution but it does solve your bluish problem or you can negotiate with Dell by asking them to change a new set of LCD.

Regarding the ATI CCC problem, the ATI CCC often give some troublesome moment to the users as it will slow down the process of the windows. Uninstalling it will boost the windows performance and gaming performance. Most of the Studio 15 users uninstall their ATI CCC.

Guide to change Function Keys Behaviour

Follow the steps below to change the function keys behaviour:
1) When you boot up at the 1st screen where u will see a dell logo, quickly tab/ press the F2 button repeatly until
you manage to get into the BIOS setting page.

2) Move your menu tabs to [Advanced] by pressing right arrow key button.

3) Move the Highlighted Option to the Function Keys Behavious Option which located at the bottom of the page.

4) Press Enter to switch between 2 option: Function Keys First or Multimedia Keys First

Function Keys First: Meaning it will change to normal function keys' function just like any other computer when you
first press the function keys button.
(Example: ALT + F4 to terminate or F5 to refresh a page.)

Multimedia Keys First: Meaning it will change to the multimedia function first which is the default when u first time
receive the STUDIO 15 laptop. These function keys will act as the Quickset button by DELL when
you first press the function keys button.
(Example: F2 to enable wifi or F7 to mute the volume etc...)

5) After decided the option to choose from, press enter to apply.

6) Move your menu tabs to [Exit] and select Exit saving Changes.

7) Windows will boot up normally and applied the function keys behaviour you choosen.
