FAQ

Q: What should I do if I found some mites on my hedgehog?
A: Follow the steps below:
1. Buy Frontline Spray from petshops or vets.
2. Disinfect the toys and cage/container with detergent.
3. Use newspaper as the bedding and only put the food and water dish inside the cage/container.
4. Spray your hedgehog thoroughly with Frontline and avoid the face area.
5. Leave the hedgehog back in its cage/container for 3 to 4 hours and bath it after the duration so that it'll be free from Frontline.
6. Repeat Step 4 3 days later to make sure that the hedgehog is free from mites.
7. Usually the quarantine last for 7 days, remember to change the newspaper everyday. If you still find mites on the hedgehog after the quarantine period, repeat Step 4.
8. Find out the source of the mites if possible.

Q: Can hedgehogs travel? Will they get carsick?
A: Hedgehog dislikes traveling. It'll stress them out, and they might vomit or give watery poo, sometimes even weight loss. Leave your hedgehog alone if such problems occur. Let them settle down and rest first, so try to reduce the amount of traveling for hedgehogs. When traveling, use small, cozy and dark tank or container like shoebox with holes poked for air ventilation. Put thick clothes or woodshavings inside the container to make your hedgehog as comfortable as possible.

Q: Can I put 2 or more hedgehogs together?
A: No! Hedgehogs are solitary animals, meaning they love to be left alone than having companion.

Q: But I see my/my brother's/my sister's/my mother's/my father's/my grandfather's/my great grandfather's hedgehogs look fine living in group.
A: Unlike human, hedgehogs do not love companion, they don't cherish the friendship and it'll make them uncomfortable and even stress if put together. Please seperate them.

Q: But I see they didn't fight oso?
A: NO POK! NO POK!! NO POK IN RK HOUSE!!!! YOU WANT ME TO CALL THE POLICE IZZIT??? Are you blind, don't understand English or retarded? Want me to tell you how many time it's against their nature???

Q: How you know it's against the nature?
A: You have to die to know the answer.
Q: Why?
A: So you can ask God lah!

This is him! If I'm not mistaken, he is 4 months old. I have yet to ask the seller yet.
http://img200.imageshack.us/i/dsc028032.jpg/

His place looks a little empty though. Haha.
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8409/dsc02806u.jpg

I got him Back-2-Nature Small Animal Bedding. I have to change it's bedding once a week or when it's dirty enough?
The person from petshack asked me to buy LC-VIT Forte Syrup too!
Bought 8 in 1 Ultra-Blend Diet and his shampoo too!
I didn't hold him yday as the seller told me to leave it alone on the first day in it's new home.
And his quills are standin up when I tried holding him. Haha. He sleeps pretty much. In the evening and at night.
Oooh. I'll let him sniff my finger once a while. :0)

carmein you don't have hidehouse or wheel for your hedgie? and your water bottle isn't hanged?

about the bedding, you can scoop up the pee and poo spot everyday. then replace with new one. when whole thing started to smell, only you change the whole bedding and wash the tank.

I changed to fleece this morning already!! I notice Pepper seldom poop everywhere else so hope using fleece can help my 'pocket'.. Hehe..

I notice Pepper looks very relax and sleepy when I am drying her up after bath.. Wonder if because she feels comfortable or during the bath she gets too stressed up... Hehe

U jus got your hedgie?

If yes, let him get use to the environment and u too.. They need sometime to recognise u..

You can use handfeeding as one of the method to speed up the process..

But anyway, hedgie is a very cautious and self protective animal. Even if they recognise ur smell, when u out in sudden approach them they will still hiss and spike up...It's their natural behavior.. biggrin.gif

Don say u bother us...we all are here to share..

What u can do when the hedgie hiss and spike up when u approaching it is, u refrain and withdraw bit... let him see ur hand...then usually he will stop hissing...slowly approach..if he hiss again..then stop... repeat until u can touch his nose or under mouth.... the slowly touch his belly hair...

Make sure the hedgie see ur hand movement...if not he will feel insecure..

wow...im lucky so far my Kookie Monster has never balled up when im holding her tongue.gif ..and she has only been with me for 1 week plus...but she does that spiking thing if i try to pick up from her cage...once outside..she's a climber n explorer...owh...n a pooping machine rolleyes.gif

but i do have some other questions though...hopefully u guys can help me out smile.gif

btw today i woke up early (around 6 am) , and while the light was still off, i went to have a look at my baby, n saw her in action (like super active!) kept trying to climb out from the box...haih...need to buy bigger box with higher walls..her head was out already!

anyways i've read about mites and quilling, n i think she may be in that process now (but i doubt there are any mites)

but im abit puzzled with one thing, when i read on quilling, the hedgie would be scratching occasionally because of the quilling process, however in my case, i find it puzzling because....

when i turn on the lights....she would be in a normal stage, but as soon as i turn off the lights, she would be scratching alot! well i won't call it scratching like crazy, but it's alot...but when i turn the lights on again.....she's back to normal...normal in this sense would mean she would still be active, running around eating and all that stuff like it was in the dark, but minus the scratching...

it's like a signal to her...

lights on-scratch off
lights off-scratch on

hahaha...weird....

soo...can anyone plz help out n explain this kind of behaviour? maybe anyone have encountered it?

fyi....i've NEVER seen her scratch before....not even today....that was the only time i saw...well in the dark of course..mayb during other nights (in the dark) i don't know...but one thing for sure...it would only happen IN THE DARK.....

how much, hmm just very very little, because I also scare over it,
I just feed it on morning 1 time.
Maybe I just feed together with mealworm ( because my Bo Chai can directly eat mealworm, RC not really direct eat, just need to wait.)

dr jenny is off on thursday. but you can give her a callto check because sometime she will still on duty. WHS..I hope he is not having it. as I know, this disease is still untreatable..and the exact causes can't be found yet. some say is genetic.

Yesterday I bring my Bo Chai for Dr Jenny check, although Bo Chai look like WHS case but Dr Jenny not 100% confirm that, and Dr Jenny say is look vein & joint problem, because Bo Chai early left leg get injured, although the wound is recover, but Dr Jenny say maybe those bacteria will infect until vein or joint.

Dr Jenny got check out that left leg and feel the joint a bit hard, so we try to cure it, lucky Bo Chai still eat those medic biggrin.gif.

Dr Jenny give me a suggestion that reduce for giving any dry cat food, if over having the cat food it will hurt the vein and joint for long time. Now I try to feed mealworm more that cat food.

Anyone here just feed hedgehog for insect food? biggrin.gif

Hmm just figured out..... Is it hedgehog diet also can make some blend mix food to replace those cat food ????

if no more green poo and its eating and poo-ing as per normal then i think a visit to the vet is unnecessary.

i tink my hedgehog got some mites problem and it might hav spread to the rest of my hedgehog coz their enclosure are stack on top of each other sad.gif

ta strange thing is they dont scratch much but quills are all over the hidebox and got flaky skin, anyone face this problem before ?

same case like Mika...
so faster get him to the vet
Mika dun have much flaky skin also..
only quills dropping

n she dun have mites as well....
i tot the quill droppings were caused by mites, but i couldn't notice any..
then bring to dr jenny...she confirm that there's no mites as well...

could be something worse that mite...

ic.. well i think i saw mites on the newspaper sheet i put inside.
but cant find any on the hedgehog's body and it dont scratch much either. the worrying fact is, its losing abit of weight and his right hind legs seems no energy like tat.

i hope its just mites and not other stuff so far the other 2 of my hedgehog did not show sign of shedding any quills.

if the hedgehog is below 6 months of age, that's quilling. the hedgehog is replacing its baby quills with adult ones, if you pick your hedgehog up and look closely you'll find the quills are a little uneven with some longer ones poking out. this will continue until the age of 6-7 months when all the baby quills are replaced with adult quills.

I usually trim kenken nail once a month. And it's advicable to trim their nail regularly.

Jus grab a nail cutter, put him on my lap..let him settle down bit...pull his hand and leg one by one and cut~ biggrin.gif

Give him a superworm as treats after all nails are done~

Hi..
Just wondering~~
What if i wont be at home for a few days and the place i am going is quite far (cant bring hedgehog ) ... lets say few hours drive.. (hedgehog will sick )
is it ok to leave lots of food in the food tray for the hedgehog ?? will it eat till die?? ( like fish ) or will
the hedgehog lonely till die?? (left alone to play in cage )
Or can we like send it to a vet or a pet store to help take care of it??

Are there alternative ways?? like put worm all around a big room and let the hedgehog there?? lOl .. tongue.gif

That's a very interesting idea.
LOL!

Generally, they dun like leftover food.
So if jst a day or 2 then u can put some extra food, they won't starve.
But if it's for a longer period, 3-4 days or longer, then it's advisable to get somebody to help u take care of it.
Cheers!

Is it advisable to trim when he falls asleep? Dats when he is not moving at all.

I don't think it is accessible.
You have to get his conscious first,
then only you can trim.
If not when you touch him,
he will feel danger and will spike up and roll into a ball.

Just some news for hedgehog lovers...

Im a breeder of hedgehogs and i have some contacts who are booking my litter. however a customer of mine told me of another breeder who was constantly breeding his hedgehogs.

Immediately i called the breeder and made a deal with him to purchase 1 pair of his hedgehogs for RM500 each = RM1000.

The reason? he was killing the female by pushing her to breed non-stop. Just a note please purchase from reputable breeders.

Now the 2 hedgehogs are with my sis...giving them at least 6 months proper rest...

Just want to ask all lovers out there if u know of any unethical breeders, kindly pm me.

i dont know how much i can pay out to buy over hedgehogs but at least its something....

not hedgehogs alone but all pets in general

thanks

Are there alternative ways?? like put worm all around a big room and let the hedgehog there?? lOl ..  tongue.gif
*
Better send for boarding. You might not know what will happen to you hedgehog when you are not around.
Anyway why take the risk?

That one is not albino color.. Is White color category.

Albino is called albino only when it's full white quills and red eyed.

*
if you know the lineage of the parent hedgehogs, then you'll realize that the colours can be breeded and none are rare. hedgehog colours are inherited, and there are dominant and recessive genes like humans do.

if the male is a pure S&P and the female albino, the offsprings will all be S&Ps or snowflake (the white you mentioned).

if both parents are of mixed (eg. male is S&P with S&P and albino parents, female is S&P with S&P and albino parents), then you may get offsprings with colours ranging from S&P, snowflake and albino, with higher chances of S&Ps being born.

snowflakes are the results from a coloured one mated with an albino. like when you breed between a cinnamon and apricot, they may produce offsprings with 'cinnicot' colour.

but do note that colour breeding is still something that many are researching right now because hedgehogs are only domesticated for about a decade or so, so the colour inheritance may not work exactly like, say human's blood type of A, B, AB, and O. Mainly because there's too many colours and too many combinations, and human have yet to study this extensively to prove the exact process of colour inheritance in hedgehogs.

you don't. smile.gif

i don't breed mealworms but you can keep them alive for a long time by gutloading them with oat. and keep them away from water. i think there was a thread on this before, or discussed somewhere in the previous hedgehog thread.

i've kept my mealworms alive for over 4 months without a single drop of water, so i believe it's okay. they'll look active and aggresive if you constantly add oat, good source of energy for them. smile.gif

If you let mealies direct contact with water they will die. So wipe all the vegetables/fruits tat you feed to mealies, and avoid feeding fruits such as watermelon, papaya...

Mealies can obtain moisture needed from vegetables and fruits tat you serve.

I use rolled oats as bedding..then alternate day i will put vege inside... and sprinkle some calcium powder.. To balance out bit of the high phosphorus..

As livingmonolith said, they can survived up to months if you provide them food.. biggrin.gif

My bochai having 2 week medicine , but not really cure, Dr Jenny also say need sometime for it.

So now I feed mealworm more than RC by now, but how many mealworm should Bochai take per day?
If Bochai eat normally, 30~40 mealworm per day now.... ( is it ok? )
I feel like after feed more mealworm... bochai less touch the RC although I just serve them at the same time.

Now take care Bochai really like take care baby, on time call him eat, he can't stand properly to eat and just give up to eat if he can't stand back, now i feed him 2 meal per day, should I go for 3 meal? ( need to depend how many he need to eat those mealworm, anyone got count for that biggrin.gif )

if you have not been feeding a regular portion daily and didn't monitor the weight gain, then the only option you have is leave it alone and wait until the expected delivery date has passed. although they mentioned it can be as long as 49 days, normally hedgehogs give birth after about 30-35 days after a successful mating.

first time moms will tend to be more aggresive, but that is a subjective description as some hedgehogs are generally aggresive by nature.

also, if this is the first time you try to mate your hedgehogs, there are always chances that the breeding is unsuccessful as your hedgehogs may not really 'know' exactly the reason why they're housed together with the opposite gender.

in general people would recommend fit32 as the diet content is the closest to a hedgehog's diet. many also start with kitten34 as the kibble are smaller and easier to consume, but do note that kitten34 has a higher fat content and even from the texture you can see that the kibbles are somewhat quite oily.

there is only one specific brand of hedgehog food available in the market in malaysia, you may check it out to figure out hedgehog's best diet in percentage.

I think is either Albino, S&P or Snowflake, with higher chances of getting S&P. (Explained by livingmonolith earlier)

i use fleece.

You can use recycled pelleted paper bedding such as BreederCelect or Back2Nature.

Back to nature is good, becoz softer compare to BC, so it's better for ur hedgie feet when they step on it.

Both are safe for animals, and environmental friendly.

It dpends on how much calcium u give lo..but giving too much also not good...

Phosphorus is something dangerous. Closely related to calcium.

When body absorb 1g of phosphorus, it will take away 1g of calcium during the process. This happen in animals and human as well.

That is why feeding high phosphorus for long period lead to calcium deficiency disease.

....
i dunno what to say anymore...
it seems that u have no idea about breeding at all....

probably that's one of the factor that contributed to the mommy killing the hoglets....
1st, u cannot hold them
2nd, u should not change the bedding, change in the environment will stress out the mommy....can't stand the smell? then shouldn't have bred them in the first place

sigh...
pls be prepared, dun wanna see this happen again
if u r not ready, dun house them together

hope u have learned ur lesson, 3 lives is gone becos of this

We always encourage people to feed high quality cat food such as RC, Inova Evo, Eagle Pack, California Natural and etc...

Other cheaper one such as Iams, Friskies.... i don think it is good for ur hedgie.

I'm currently using RC32, albiet a bit pricey...but it's recommended, even by the vet
I've tried Iams before, i tot it was really fattening, but it seems that RC32 is also as fattening as well....cos i see deposits of fats behind their legs...
but i've also read online that Iams is not good, that it causes fat tissue something something something...i forgot...so i switched
i believe we should give the best to our beloved pets, to provide the best for them as they only have us to take care of them

Jitshiong, i think u r saying liver fatty problem..

Some people said science plan and iams is good kibbles and good food for hedgehog... and some said it's bad...

But research carried out show feeding Iams causes serious liver problem in hedgie...

So, why do we wan to take the risk...right?

When he is bout one year old i think can swap d...

But however, age is not really the only determinant for u to swap the diet.. The body size of ur hedgie too..If ur hedgie is too fat, avoid feeding high protein kibbles..change to lower one..

actually, it looks more like champagne. it's different from eric's, although it may also be a snowflake but it's hard to see unless there's a close-up photo of the quills.

snowflake is not a colour, it's considered a derivation from the standard colours. we call them snowflakes when the number of white quills is high in percentage. snowflakes occur in every colour.

and while we're talking colours, the hedgehogs we find locally are mostly algerians, S&P is a common term for hedgehogs we see here, but we can also term them with colours between algerian dark grey, grey and chocolate, although it's a bit hard to categorize since there aren't any experts around.

i also agreed that is champagne color.

As livingmonolith said, snowflake is not a particular color... it's a one of the color category. The differences of snowflake with others is snowflake hedgie quills are mixture of banded and non banded. The others mostly are non-banded and only abit are banded

My Kenken shud be falls in snowflake color category, and his color is chocolate snowflakes..

Hmm eric, if my BoChai eat more mealworm by now, so how should the limit will be per day for the mealworm?
RC totally no like to eat by now. And my BoChai 1 time eat around 10~20 event 30 per meal, now shouldbe 2 meal.

Dr Jenny encourage that eat more insect more than RC, so any suggestion for that ?

U can feed other insects such as crickets and so...But we cant get live homebred grasshopper here in malaysia.

Or u can get urself Bugsy Small Carnivore Food and feed to them. Much better than feeding mealworms.

Ya, agree with you all. Maybe it's champagne colour, but shouldn't champagne have red eyes. From the picture, it's more like black colour eyes.

p/s: We should have picture taken of all our hedgie and then try to categorize the colour. It's actually interesting to study the colour of hedgie in Malaysia.

I think you mistake Champagne with Albino color wink.gif
Albino always or mostly with red eyes while Champagne is more to the brown color eyes.. and the picture that given earlier is Champagne color.. quite hard to get it nowadays.. 1 out of many colors that I want to have smile.gif

I got links that can help to guide pokimon's color as it was belong to a breeder and not to complicated like hedgehog central links http://hedgehogsbyvickie.com/hedgehogcolors.htm

Actually not only albino have red eyes, other type also got red eyes.
And about the link that you sent., it stated that:

"The eye color is a rich RUBY RED" -- this is under Champagne category.

What I mean is the eyes should be red or ruby red.

Bugsy Small Carnivore Food is a good insect source for insects eater. In, malaysia we often give mealworms or cricket to our pets..but this is not really balanced in nutritional wise.

They need variety of insects in different stages (larval, insects, pupa) in order to fulfill their needs for insects nutritional value.

Bugsy Small Carnivore Food is in powder form, is actually blended of all kind of insects. Jus mix bit water and serve.. I make it like meatball then serve to kenken. biggrin.gif

You nid to intro every single new food to hedgie..they are really picky in eating..

U can serve mayb 30% of his diet...

If he refuse to eat, u smash all his favorite RC kibbles then mix bit of the carnivore food inside..

Day by day u increase the carnivore food gradually... Then he can slowly pick up and eat...

For those who planning to breed their hedgie, pls make sure prepare and get ready... equip urself with knowledge and read up more...

Or else, things like that will happen and happen again..

The mother hedgehog and babies both bear very high risk when the mother and the owner are not prepared well.

But sometime even if you do read more, when you first handle the situation also will be bit panic. There's nth we can do except send them to vet if the mom having difficulties when deliver. Sometime the delivery process seems so smooth, but sometime don't. There's always a risk. As a conclusion, it's better to read more first.. tongue.gif

clicking is a sound they make when they are afraid... u will hear click click sound...

from what i observed from kenken, hissing is mild angry... clicking is really angry.. and the body will keep vibrate when making clicking sound..

I would say don breed the hedgie for fun.. unless u r really experienced like jitshiong or alex..

when i went to buy the goats milk for them, they are still living, but when i got back, 2 of them died already..i am nursing the last survivor, and i think he/she is doing well now

FYI, i am already prepared for breeding. before breeding, i read lots n lots of info about breeding, i even asked questions from this thread.

the cause of mom's death is internal bleeding. from my opinion its nature of them, not my fault..you can be prepared for anything, but even if u r, never ever underestimate the power of God's will.

if He want to take it, he will take it..

you guys can blame me for my fault, if u think i was wrong in breeding the hedgehog, but as far as i know, i am not in fault of this problem..

if its my fault by giving her wrong vitamins, disturbing the mother, clean up the cage after her labour and touching the baby hoglets, yes i accept that i should be blamed for her's and her litter's death

Thank you so much guys for helping, you have been great to me.

RIP Jeni, and her two baby hoglets

It's not wrong to breed, just have to be prepared to face situations like this
U should be prepared if the mommy reject the hoglets/mommy dies etc.
There are lots of possibilities to take into consideration and u have to be prepared for it.

I feel for your lost, i hope the remaining hoglet survive
it's not that i wanna dampen ur spirit, but it's an uphill task
the hoglet needs more than just milk...
i dunno if the things u need can be purchased from the vet
best is to let another hedgehog nurse it
that's what i gathered from the oversea breeders
i wish u all the best and i'll help u in anyway i can

my number is 012-5770007
contact me if u need anything

Ya, I also feel the same like you. Sometime things are just not within our control. It's in the hand of God. Hope that the remaining hoglet will survive too.

Nevertheless, I think sharing of knowledge and helping each other out when one's hedgie is in trouble is the reason why this topic about hedgehog is created. It can indeed saving all the hassle for those new hedgie's owner.

ive been keeping my 5 month old hedgehog for 3 months now. he is one picky hedgehog, eats nothing else but royal canin kitten 36. but somehow he seems very healthy and slightly bigger than other normal hedgehogs his age (not fat but the body is longer). is it bad for hedgehogs to consume only cat food?

Breeding is still a long way for me. Hope that I'll be prepared when the time comes. I'm just fascinated by their colour.

Just my opinion, Jitshiong or alex should open a hedgehog class for those new with hedgie.. tongue.gif

Yeah, well said. All the basic info can be found on internet.

But if we want to treat out hedgie better, we still need to put more efforts in it. For me, sometime from theory to practical is a bit challenging.

We can only read n prepare that much.
When actual situation occurs, it's not as easy at it is on paper
a lot of things have to adapt according to the situation.
a lot of factor cannot be wirtten down
Experience have to be gained ma....

That is not call picky but he only know RC food. You should try to feed him more choices of brand in order to get rid this habit, if not later if RC no more in production then you will got a mass headache to ask your pokimon to eat.

Try to start feeding him diff brand of food to let him get used to it BUT not changing it gradually in one shoot. If you change all his food to new brand for sure he wont eat it because it's new for him. You need to mix both new n old food together n gradually increase new food then in no time he will not call picky anymore smile.gif Remember not to change it over in 1 shot, it will made the stomach upset.

hedgehogs are very quiet creatures and they do not smell like suggies. I would say the starting costs would just be the cage and the accessories which would come to about RM300. On a monthly expenditure, I only spend approximately RM10 for food and bedding.

monthly expenses for hedgehog is pretty low compared to SG. Much lower i would say. Only on food, and bedding. If u use newspaper or fleece, even chaeper. no cost for bedding

Let me break this down.
RM150 for cage,
RM25 for bottle,
RM20 for litter box,
RM100 for wheel,
RM5 for food bowl,
RM15 for hide box,
RM30 for bedding pellets,
RM25 for wood shavings,
RM32 for RC36,
RM30 for hedgehog diet food,
RM1 for meal worms
That's about it for my starting costs. After that next 3-4 months, no monthly costs. Maybe RM2-3 for meal worms.
Maybe some price wrong already. As I said, it's just an estimate.

that's what i thought as well about the packaging sizes.

anyway, depending on how 'luxurious' one want it to be, actually the start-up cost won't have to be so high if you know where to save.

hideboxes can DIY, cage can use toyogo boxes, fleece is a one-off purchase, bedding and food can be cheaper if you purchase in big number.

wheels, if you're as creative as some members, they actually DIY. wink.gif if you're not so creative, then maybe can purchase 2nd hand items like me.

definitely won't be climbing around, in fact they'd rather you leave them alone in the dark and let them come out to play themselves at night.

cat kibbles that're mentioned are the closest diet to hedgehog, although we do have hedgehog diets in the market nowadays. some owners also feed boiled egg white and chicken meat as well. occasional mealworms as treats.

rarely you'll find a hedgehog fall sick out of nowhere, unless they inherited diseases from parents such as wobbly leg syndrome. apart from that, the more usual situation you may encounter is that them injuring themselves due to their clumsiness (fall off wheels, climbing and tumbling around, etc).

I do agree with DIY...Makes it feel more homely I guess...As I was in a rush to get a home after I got my hedgie from Jitshiong, I had to resort to buying everything...

pink_baby: Go get from bro jitshiong, he has a whole lot of them...Hahaha...
living monolith: Asn to quote bro monolith, hedgie's are actually quite clumsy...They tend to miscalculate the height and make a jump for it.

And as I promised bro Jitshiong, here's Tequila!

My hedgie usually run on the wheel when the lights off, and the poo will be all around the wheel... sigh..

Don't start breeding if you are new to hedgie. It's very risky for your own hedgie.

Siggplus...
any updates on the remaining hoglet?
how is he/she doing?
*
thanks for asking..
he/she looks fine i think. she have been eating, pooing and peeing well..i fed him/her with diluted goat's milk. I'm still trying to find goat's colostrom for the supplements.

when i touch him/her and i felt he/she is cold, i let him/her be on my tummy and he/she just lie there quietly and soon his/her body is warm again..

i massages him/her body after each meal to strengthen the muscles..and i follow the guide to massages him/her tummy to stimulate bowel movements.

i am on a very high alert for him/her now, whenever he/she cries, i quickly tend to her needs. its very tiring, but i have to bear with it..

hoping for the best now

Some even say that pokimon is for those lazy ppl who want a pet but not really wan or have much time to spend on it wink.gif
Because they're solitary, they prefer to live alone and no need so much attention from us. Only the bonding and training part is needed to made them bond and get used to handle. The rest is to feed n spend some time to play with them. That's all that needed for this little durian wub.gif wub.gif

nope, u r increasing the risk of the mom eating the hoglets...
it also depends on how comfortable the mommy is with u
very bonded one might not even hiss if u open the hide box to peek
but to be on the safe side...better not to disturb them

he released it back to the wild.

just in case if you haven't read the follow up stories, the forumer is living in new zealand (or somewhere), where wild hedgehogs always get stuck in residential area's piping and stuff. so that's pretty common there.

normally people will advise the earliest contact with the hoglets is approx 2 weeks from date of birth, or to put it safe, when the hoglets have their eyes opened.

it also depends on how the mother behaves, some are calmer and will allow you to have a look at the hoglets even after a week, as long as you keep your hands off them. advisable to move the hoglets using only clean spoons before the age of two weeks (if it's really necessary for you to move them).

In 2007 I bred my hedgehogs before, and it was the last time I bred them since the female is not a good mom. She only birth to 3 hoglets but 1 died during birth so the mom ate it. Then once the hoglets were a week old she started to attack her hoglets by chewing on their heads. Now I didn't touch any of the young or her bedding, just top up food and water. Because I was desperate to safe the hoglets, I rescued what was remaining.... 1 hoglet. The other had its head eaten by the mom.

Eyes haven't open, recovering from the wounds on her head coz her mom attacked her head.

I nursed her on Kitten Replacement Milk and as she grew, I mixed with Innova Evo catfood into a paste and few her using my fingers. When she grew, she was totally friendly and naughty. I was the first thing she saw when she open her eyes.

It's hard to handfeed young hoglets, so try not to disturb the mom if you have a hedgehog with hoglets. Worst come to worst, only interfere if there is a need to handfeed.

i remember this hoglet, i think you've posted the photos before in the thread V3 or V4. didn't realize that she's the one you handfed.

people assume it's easy to breed hedgehogs, but are rarely prepared to handle abnormal situations because few mentioned their experiences where things went horribly wrong and there's no guide for them when unfortunate incidents happen.

Glad you remembered. I didn't post much about her but yah, I handfed her using syringe, then spoon.... had to feed every 2 hours and the poo is always green. Not easy. But when she got older it was easier but she didn't like to eat crunchy food, like the soft food with milk.

Members shouldn't jump into breeding so fast without reading up. I had done research on breeding 2 years before I bred my hedgehog and even with research I too came up with problem and I had to find a solution.

I think hand feeding is sth that every hedgehog owner need to be aware of. Do you mind share more about your experience??

I found the hoglet a home. The owners sent me a video once, and I was very touched to see how close the hedgehog was to the family and how it can sleep in their arms and it never hiss or spike up when people handle her.

Well, to start, we have to buy a puppy replacement milk or kitten replacement milk. I chose kitten replacement milk because that's what people use in US. And I did not buy the cheap ones, mine was like Rm20+ for a small bottle of milk powder.

I mixed it according to directions and syringe feed. I can't remember how much the hoglet ate coz that was in 2007 but it's usually enough and when it stops eating.

When the hoglet has open its eyes, I slowly crushed some dog food(innova evo) that I have and mix very little of the powdered dog food into the milk and syringe feed. This is just to give a taste of the dogfood so that it would be easier for it to accept it later. Then as a week went by and it starts to chew my fingers, I made the milk into a paste, more dogfood in it. She ate a lot. Every time after eating I had to use a warm wet cloth to wipe her face, wipe her butt to make her pee and poo and also use my finger and rub her tummy in circular motion. It helps if the hoglet is on some heat surface. I used a reptile red light for heat but I would suggest a heating pad or a hot water bottle.

Hehe, the hedgie fine btw. Been with me for around 1 week plus. Won't spike up or hiss when I handle him now, but occasionally la.

Got a second hand silent wheel for around RM20. tongue.gif

Now thinking of DIY a larger place for him to stay, the toyogo box too small with the wheel inside. Haha..

12 inch one lo, actually the outer layer is broken into 2 pieces, so previous owner selling it cheap. But I use super glue to glue it together, previously he just use tape. And till now, the wheel is functioning like new.

no problem, i'm curious to see how your hedgehog would look like as well without the ears.

yes, fighting among siblings is very normal, which is why breeders should have enough space to keep the hoglets apart when they're old enough to be left alone. while i've seen few adult hedgehogs being housed together (usually in petstores), there's always a chance of injuries if they're kept in the same enclosure.

I bought from Pet Safari. You can find a variety of cat milk replacements there. Just read the labels and judge which is good. It is better if it is low in lactose.

NORMAL?
which part of it is normal?
i've never seen any chewing of ears in the bunch of hoglets i've had before

Cos I heard that some hoglet became blind because of the quills...

You never encounter such problem in your batch of hoglets??

Waa after so long away starting on another pet business...sad to see so many failed breedings....i myself also lost 1 hoglet but now unsure how many hoglets left....LOL...still have not check the nest....the mother everyday inside....

Anyway for those who are breeding hoglets....1 tip i learnt is when its time to give birth put some useful materials near the nest

eg. spoon, cloth, etc etc

this is so that u can use it if the hoglets come out or wat....but 1 thing i encounter this time of breeding is....

the hoglet i found dead was outside the nest....and the mom very protective of the nest till now...

any idea y the baby died outside?????i check the baby, it died without bite marks watsoever...

the nest now stinks and im mixing my own diet to feed the mother and hopefully the baby...mainly small kibbles mixed with higher protein grade ones...

any season breeders can answer y only 1 of my hoglet died quite far away from the nest??? cant seem to google an answer on this....

after breeding so long this is the 1st time i encounter

Pet Safari is at Ikano, next to Ikea. I forgot the brand, it was in a bottle form with some kittens. I think it was called Kitten replacement milk. But if you have goat's milk, then go ahead and use it. Once a while you can add a drop of vitagen in it to help with the gut system. Then all you have to do is keep the hoglet in a shoe box or tank with lots of towels and keep in a warm place. Feed every 2 hours. If the poo is green, no need to worry coz their poo will be green if they are not drinking their mom's milk.

If the poo is green, no need to worry coz their poo will be green if they are not drinking their mom's milk.

owh ic..its hard for me to go there bcoz i go anywhere by train..figured in midvalley also got sell sumthing like dat? the baby is only 6 days old today so when do i need to give the baby vitagen?i already kept her in the shoe box, and i put in paper shredding, towel and glove..i'm thinking of buying heat pad for her also today..

I think yellowish should be fine.... I think only coz mine all the time was a dark greenish poo. Midvalley should have some replacement milk. You read the labels. Don't get the cheap kind in packets. I rather go for the ones in tins that are imported and trusted brands.

Oh, you need a heating pad then. I dunno if Midvalley has it or not but in Pet Family, they are selling the reptile heating pad. I think got discount too. You can sit the Putra LRT till Taman Bahagia and walk to the pet shop. I too travel by train coz no car. The vitagen, not so soon. Maybe in another week. Since your baby is so young, I suggest the brand of kitten milk called Just Born coz this has colostrum which is beneficial for young animals. Expensive, so I suggest you get the liquid one, 1 small pack like those small juice box is RM14 I think, but it benefits. It can last 2 weeks in the fridge after you open it.

if u need to go to pets family
get to taman bahagia lrt

once there u will see a continental tayar shop opposite the lrt station.
walk towards the tayar shop and continue to go straight until u reach a traffic light junction.
go accross the road and continue to walk straight until u reach secret recipe shop.
now turn right and walk straight for about 30 second u will see pets family on the opposite side of the road beside Ming Tin smile.gif

Ops..u using newspaper as bedding?? Better change to proper bedding...Newspaper contains a lot chemical and ink...which is not good for them..

He is not playing with the stools..because when they poo on the newspaper, it doesnt absorb..the poo and pee remains on the newspaper, when they step on it..then this is what happen.. biggrin.gif

Added on August 12, 2009, 7:41 pmNeed help here. How do we define the hedgehog is in quilling process??

I suspect my hedghog is in the process now.. Just want to double confirm.

Just notice quite a lot of quills on the floor of the container. He also stop running on the wheel since 2 days ago.

Are all this symptoms indicating quilling process?

BTW, he's 2 month++.

I need to bath my hedgie. Lolz. It has been a month. Im really afraid that I will drown him. So, as someone mentioned in earlier post, an inch of water in the basin, then let hedgie in, scrub the back with toothbrush and shampoo? And rinse it's back?

haha so u better prepare to get bitten, bcoz after lick lick lick then must try bite la..like when u eat KFC biggrin.gif

if yours like to bite, try to talk to him about it..like mine, it works..
and other tips on biting, if he just lick only but did not bite, u give him treats
if he bite, dont give..

over a certain period of time he will discover that biting is not a good thing to do

Most of the people, only get the basic thing.. then that's it... no improvement no advancement.. now the trend is, get a small toyogo box, then put the hedgie in..within 1month, get another small toyogo, and put second hedgie in..then next is wat? Breeding...

@Michael, hehe..bungalow with yard..i also wan make one for kenken... show me when urs is done...wanna steal idea..

I just bought Momo (Hedgehog the pic below) on 20july2009, She just open eye 12july 2009. She have problem eating at the 1st week i think is because her teeth is not strong enough so i buy watermelon as her food for that whole week.I am not sure why after that 1st week she dun eat watermelon anymore but just focus on her cat food now.Any other new fruit or anything she wont even touch. She is very bad temper because after my mum play with her, she wont settle down at cage many hour just keep digging n run in a spot. See her so frustrated I give her a bath and she settle down. Isnt that she dun enjoy my mum playing with her? Today while i clean her cage i notice that got few spin at the box i left her.I dun notice any weird thing at her back and below.. losing spin izit not a good thing? I notice she growing new spin also.

Can anyone teach me how to be more close with my hedgehog and how to make it dun poke me?
Bath her every week is a bad thing?
She dun lick me at all but she smell then bite, is a bad thing she do like that?

Thanks notworthy.gif Attached Image

Arent't your hedgie underage? It is advisable to seperate hoglet from its mum after 2 month, if not it is bad for the hoglet.

Added on August 15, 2009, 5:02 pmBy the way, when is that picture taken?

Added on August 15, 2009, 5:04 pmNo need to bath her every week, she will take care of herself. Once a month also can dy. If she bite you, maybe it's because your hand got the smell of food. What you mean by new spin? Is it quill??

i dunno spin o quill.. for me i just know the fur that pokes me behind her back keep losing. I really dunno how old are her because when i wan buy her, she haven't open eye so i waited 2 week only bring her home but i confirm that when i bring her home She just open her eye a week so only .before i bring her home she is stay with her mum. The person that sell it to me didn't say anything when i ask him whether she can eat by her own yet and izit safe for her to leave mum. He just say no problem no problem and let me bring it away.

I will make sure i wont bath her anymore for her safety. I dont hope that my mistake will kill her.

How can i know that my hedgehog is sick , stress and unhappy?

doh.gif i really dunno wat to do to make sure she is safe n healthy!!!!! cry.gif

I think if the quill is losing but it start to grow back then its ok. It's called the quilling process, especially for those small hoglet.

If your hedgehog is sick, maybe she wont have appetite to eat. If she is eating normally then is consider ok la. On whether she is healthy or not, need to see what type of food you feed her.

hoglets open their eyes in about 3 weeks old, so if you got it about a week after that that means it's about a month old only. naturally at this age it will still require mother's milk because it is not ready to consume solid food yet. normally breeders will inform you to collect hoglets earliest at 6 weeks old or when they already started eating solid kibbles. to be safe usually it's 8 weeks before we normally part the hoglet with its mother.

Thanks notworthy.gif Attached Image

just open eye when u bought her? i think she havent weaned yet.. it should be 2months before she is weaned from her mother..

for be close with her, hand handle her when she woke up, give treats if she plays with you, the most important thing is spend lots of time with her, but in 1 week after u brought her home, dont disturb her much bcoz she needs to adapt to the surroundings..

as for biting, mine bites, but i speak with him not to, he does not bite anymore..1 tips is by giving her treat if she dont bite, and none if bite..just be patient

@nutty coconut, how old is ur hedgie? Mayb he dono how to eat mealies yet.. Try to teach him.. chop off the mealies head and let ur hedgie lick the juices inside..

U can offer more variety food in order to achieve more balance diet.. Such as different insects, fruits, boiled chicken, and etc.

Even catfood, u should go for better quality brand and try mixing 2 different kibbles..

Some suggest to offer raw meat, to fit more into their natural eating behavior..

But after all, it's really depend on the hedgie wan to eat or not... Most of them jus don like to try new food..

ha, believe it or not hes already 5 month old and still refuses to eat mealies.
i guess he inherits from me being picky when it comes to food. haha
chopping off the head and let him lick the juice huh? i think it could work.

i think hes confused..maybe he thinks that hes not a hedgehog but a human being!
oh guess what..he wouldnt eat plainly boiled chicken too.
perhaps i should feed him nandos or kenny rogers

we can only tell u the brand is good n recommended o not..but whether u wanna feed rc32 26 27 or etc, u nid to check the nutritional analysis, n see which fits into ur hedgie..

usually ppl judge by the hedgie age n size, then decide the protein intake.

Struggling hard to get out from the pail. As in * Let me outta here!! *
He must be too frightened that he pooed! Poor guy.
And he likes the shower head!

I would like to ask about the difference between Silent Spinner 12" and Silent Wheel 30cm. Both look really similar to me.

Eric, are you using the Silent Spinner 12"?

isn't both the same? only difference is the inch and cm measurement, which is the same size btw.

some complained that the silent wheel tends to fall down if the hedgehog's running too fast, but so far i've never experienced such incidents.

I try bottle before, but then my hedgie seems like doesn't know how to drink from it. Then I change to bowl. Luckily he didn't play with the water, as it may get messy if the water overflow.

Use bottle maybe will also damage hedgie teeth. So use bowl if can. But actually it all depend on yourself, as long as your hedgie got enough water to drink, then its ok.

U mean the hedgie got two different colours?

I think that will be called pinto, you can google more about it.

there's no pinto in malaysia, not to be mistaken with snowflake colours.

i remember a year or more ago max has posted before that he enquired about bringing in pintos from US or somewhere, but that will cost over 1k. the conversations about this was a bit too distant and i can barely remember the details mentioned by the posters back then.

My hedgehog keep scratching her back, I saw her like got some dried dead skin on her skin, and just now I check my fleece, I can see some white small things like dandruff on it and some quills.
Is this quilling or mites?

my bobbee loveeeesssssss sweet foods....sweet smells...i was eating tepung pelita yesterday then he was on my lap...he keep sniffing n searching where d smell came from...so i gave him a very tiny bite..n he love it...hahahahahaaa so cute do.. n he love banana too

Banana is high in phosphorus. Hedgie overall diet is not really high in calcium.. If you keep feeding high phosphorus food, they wil get calcium deficiency disease..

Let me post some of my DaeDae's pic. Haha.
My family members like him so much!
How much exactly do I have to feed him? He is now 4 months old. And Im feeding him 8 in 1 ultra-blend.

What should I do, if I suspect that I might accidentally bring mites "back home"? Is there any preventive measure?

well..that depends
if they r familiar with u..then it's ok
won't hurt at all....
if they r in defence mode...(all spiked up)
then it will definitely hurt
