The best is either use fleece or cloth as bedding, or newspaper. Why? Coz I have tried everything that I can think of for my hedgies last time, and the best was from cloth and newspaper. Confirm healthier, cleaner, no irritation or skin problems.

I tried before breeder celect, back to nature, corn cob, woody pellets, wood shavings, carefresh.... the ones made of recycled paper are good but then so costly to use. So best is to use cloth if you rajin to wash. I had 7 cloth, everyday I change 1, then once I reach weekend, I take all the dirty cloth I kumpul and wash. But then I became lazy, so newspaper was easier in the end.

I'm using newspaper too. But my hedgie always like to hide under the paper. He has a hideout but he prefers his home to be under a thin layer of inked paper. -___- So i tried making him a simple hideout using newspaper, he stayed in it for a while. When i take a peek in his cage in the morning, i cant even find his food bowl. doh.gif Does yours give you that problem?

Dr Jenny said its completely fine. I was surprised too. I even asked about the ink being toxic, she said it wont stain or what-so-ever. =S In fact, its a good alternative as it is more hygenic. And so far my hedgie is fine. thumbup.gif

my jimjim went for 2nd injection ytd by dr jenny...when i got jimjim from a breeder, his skin got white tiny mites and dandruff all over his body...i tried to bath him using the oatmeal shampoo..the dandruff and mites reduces but still i bring him to dr jenny for check up and she said jimjim needs injection cuz those mites are underneath his body and just injection will kill them...total 3 injections need to be given to jimjim...other than that jimjim's quills drop a lot cuz mites and dry skin..so dr jenny give some coat supplement to overcome the dryness...

Yah, I know. But then I realize it is toxic when ingested. Animals like rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs will chew on the paper, and they can get lead into them. But hedgies don't chew and eat newspaper. It is better than to use wood shavings.

i think it's safe then to use newspaper as bedding..it just that you have to take extra effort cleaning & changing the newspaper everyday...
For the moment i'm using Chipsi Classic...My 2 hedgies seems enjoy sleeping on the wood shaving. They will bite, gather & bring the wood shaving inside the hiding box like building a nest and sleep onto it...

However, to be frank they have been scratching all over their body which i believe is bcoz of mite since there's no sign of dry skin... sweat.gif
My temporary solution currently is by spraying Frontline onto them...however it was hard to be done since the moment i hold them, they will struggle to let off my hands... plus i have to avoid spraying near their face area and the belly underneath also need to be spray to ensure all the mites infection are gone.... sweat.gif

Change to newspaper seems to be good option to provide more cleaner and mites free environment...i'll give it try then icon_rolleyes.gif

I see, then not so bad for 1 injection per session tongue.gif ....
REVOLUTION, only one drop onto the body to cure the mites...that seems easier, gonna look for that then...thanks for the info... notworthy.gif
I used to spray Frontline on my Ball Python previously and accidentally spray onto the head section..
Next day he kinda inactive, dizzy and diarrhea for 3 consecutive days tongue.gif ...but after 2 times applied and disinfect his tank, he cured 100%... rclxms.gif

This time i kinda reluctant to use spray based mite solution on my hedgie coz it hard to control your spray direction..plus it's not easy to hold hedgie and make them stand still... sweat.gif

For mites, dr jenny said best to use revolution coz gentle on animals. Frontline also can but have to be careful. But if you use any mite medication and still keep in wood shavings, the mites will still be there coz mites hide in wood shavings.... dunno how to say LOL.... it's just the way it is. So once you change, it should be no problem and your hedgies will heal faster.

About the tearing of newspaper, hedgies like to bury themselves. That is why I give an old tshirt. You just put an old tshirt, your hedgie will go and bury itself in it. Then every few days, just wash and replace with another old tshirt.

Lucky you! My hedgie hated it. -___- he'll make sure his sleeping spot is clear of them, then only can sleep soundly. But ever since he has gotten lice, i've changed to newspaper. Just make sure you chk his skin everyday. My hedgie scratched too, but i thought he was cleaning himself, until i found broken quills. =S
