Do any of you guys ever experienced a faulty chip with your credit card(s) ? My 15-month old CIMB Mastercard has recently gone dead and i am pretty sure it is due to faulty chip. The credit card processing terminal can't no longer detect the card. As far as i know, most banks are charging RM50 for every card replacement and according to CIMB, the first one is RM10 then subsequent replacement (includes misplaced or stolen) is RM50. Do i need to go to a nearest CIMB Bank branch to get a replacement or just by calling them up will do ? And is there a way to get them waived the card replacement fee ? Thanks in advance  tongue.gif
*
I changed my DirectAccess Mastercard 3 times. I managed to get to waive the charges stating it's not my fault the chip failed. it's a manufacturing defect.

By any chance do you use it at Petronas stations often ?

@MilesAndMore,
Just contact the CS and tell them your card is faulty. It should be replaced for you FOC biggrin.gif

@Shinichi,
Btw are U aware of Citibank's new policy of reissuing new CCs? Assuming you're a previous CC holder with them and cancelled your card, U will need to wait out a cooling period of 1 year before any new cards from Citibank will / can be approved.

hahaha, good one cancel the card and apply again. But redeem all the points first before you cancel the card.

MilesAndMore: i guess you can call up CS and inform them that you want to use the card but it is defective, so how to use? Ask for waiver as the card was not misplaced nor stolen and if they still insist on you paying the RM10, then you got to decide you still want to give them business for charging you something that is no fault of yours.

The bank has the final say. As CIMB/DA cc is free for life, it has some stringent policies to follow. However, I always feel that you would have a stronger negotiation power if you are a good paymaster and maintain good rapport with the respective bank. I had lost my HLB cc before, and the bank sent me a new cc (new acc no) with all points transferred to the new cc, without charging a replacement fee.

Bro you are on the right track in getting a card that gives you automative annual fee waiver. Some cards have conditions like you must swipe 12 times a year to get waiver on annual fees like Alliance where as EON bank you need to swipe 6 times for classic card. Alliance bank CC not to bad because you get cash back AND reward points that does not have expiry period.

If you pay your bill on time and in full then you don't have to pay a single sen more than you spend. Since your credit limit would most probably be higher than your monthly income, you must practice to never spend more than you can afford or else you will end up like millions of Malaysians working for the banks. Having said this, the credit given with CC does come in handy in emergency situation.

Bro, even if you only spend RM200 on petrol a month it comes out to be RM2400 a year and if you can get 1% cash back you get RM24 free money. If you have insurance. phone bills, TNB, quit rent or whatever monthly'yearly expenses, charge it to the card and get cash back also. Also with CC you can get 0% installement plan but when having these kind of plans you have to be smart and not pay more than normal market price.

Another option is debit card where you get the convenience of paying just like CC. Public Bank just introduce a new debit card called Day2Day where they give 1% rebate on grocery and petrol up to December and subsequently 0.8% and the annual fees is RM12.

http://www.pbebank.com/en/en_content/perso...s/visa_d2d.html

Anyway, DA not that great lah, the points redemption is so so and got to pay for courier charges.

Bro ... let me lay it down for you since you have (it seems) narrowed down your preferences.
1. AllianceBank younique
2. AllianceBank CashBack cards
3. SCB Titanium JustOne

* Note please check your income eligibility. My take is don't care about whether got auto AF waiver - when the time comes (if they charge you AF), call CS and inquire for waiver. If they don't want to give you, cancel card and then reapply again. There are enough cards out there in the market to compete with one another.

Aiyo, why so lazy never go Alliance website to check? Yes you need to swipe 12 times for You:nique card for free AF. See below link

https://younique.alliancebank.com.my/pop_rebate.html

From above link you will note that Alliance You:nique cash back applies to all retail purchases including petrol. Also note that it will cost you RM38 to put your personalize picture on the card (which I feel it is just waste of money).

Well go ahead and get You:nique if you think you will swipe 12 times a year as it will be free. If there is an Alliance bank near you, better still for convenience when making payment.

In respect to your question "any other better card?"....... there is no one card that is the best or better than the other. If you have the time, click on my signature below to read my comments on CC.

there is no minimum amount for a swipe, it depends on the merchant. And the 12 swipe requirement is within a year. Say you never use the card for 11 months and on the final month you swipe 12 times you automatically get annual fee waiver.

The income requirement is gross RM18K per year which includes bonuses and deduction for EPF, SOCSO & blah blah blah. You just have to proof your income is RM18K or more in a year and not necessarily just your salary. Just go to the branch and ask the officer what documents you need to submit with your application since this is your first CC. After you get 1 CC, very easy to get more. Maybe you should start by applying for CC with the bank where you have savings/FD account.

The income requirement generally relates to your gross salary, which is before deduction of the various bla bla blas as you put it =p

Yea, you can pop by any branch and apply. And no, you don't need a bank account with the bank to apply.

I believe you can request the bank to waive the design fee on application, as the bank needs business. If the bank insists to charge the fee, you may consider not to have personalised design. Nobody is willing to pay RM38 for it!

Hey...you think too much. Why don't you just try and apply to 2 different banks rather than puzzling yourself uncomfortably? Most of your questions have been discussed in the previous CC Threads. If you're still not satisfied with all the answers, you can always give the banks a call or visit the banks.

Oh sorry, I am a little bit impatient now. smile.gif

@Michael_G, applying for credit card is not rocket science and rejection is normal. It took me around 3 years before SCB finally accepting my cc application. Bro @winner is right, just apply for all and see which bank accepts you if you are so uncertain about yourself and worry about not having 1 year @ work yet.

Bro @Michael_G, it took me 1 year back then before being able to apply for cc although my salary qualifies. Patience is a virtue and please don't treat cc as a must have item in your life. It is a nice to have convenience in life but often abused by people who couldn't control their spending habits very well. It tickles me to hear people complaining about banks charging them a lot of credit card interest. In the first place, you won't have this problem if you have been paying your bills in full every month right ?

I have a friend who survives without cc for many years and travelled around the world yet he lives comfortably without worry even in a foreign land.

couldn't agreed more, CC shud just be a TOOL to make your life more convenient

even if you do not get any rebates, you didn't lose anything

at least you don't need to carry so much cash with you (safety reason), and also able to consolidate your payment into one for the whole month + interest free period (could be up to 50 days)
