The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 1894�95), until the move to north London in 1913.



Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 1993�94 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (1998�99 and 1999�00) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 2006�07 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately �100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names.The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 2013�14 season.

But while we're on the subject of goals... I was a bit disappointed with Cesc this year in terms of goal scoring. Last year he started out with a couple of sublime goals and then fizzled out. This year, he went backwards a bit in that department, and the only ones I remember are the equalising header against I can't remember what team and also the two he scored against Boro.

for me,definitely andy's 4th goal against liverpool.the goal that made history for scoring 4 against the reds at anfield.the goal that made us think we won the match already.and of course,the goal that made us remember that the goal was very similar to the one that Ade scored in last year CL quarter final(against liverpool as well!)except that walcott just run easily without any intervention by liverpool's players.

and this kind of goal that made us love bobby+freddie combo.hope to see another goals similar like this next season.

i can come out with only 1 name... Manuel Almunia. He is vital to our team this season. Whenever he's out, the defense is more shaky than it usually is.

Ade's for me, considering the importance and under the circumstances which he scored it. We were absolutely horrendous during that game and we never really did look like scoring. For a moment I just couldn't believe we scored until they replayed the goal did it then sink in for me.

LOL. If I were a MU fan I'd probably give it to Silvestre as well

Jokes aside, no one truly deserved it this season. But if I had to choose, I'm pretty torn between Manny and Robin. Andy's being left out because he only had 1/2 a season and he hasn't exactly eased fully into his role yet (esp defensive cover for the LB). Attacking wise, there's no complaints about our Tsar.

Apart from the draw with T'ham, Manny didn't exactly do any major mistakes. But there are times when he could have done better, for example Ronaldo's freekick at the Grove. To be fair to him, not everybody is Buffon and Manny surely had one of the better seasons compared to the past. I'm pretty happy with him as our no1 next season provided the defence gives him more cover.

Robin, well, it's his first season with any major injuries and he's provided a total of 20G+9A, not forgetting that he single-handedly dragged us through January. He didn't have the best midfield to support him plus he was playing as a withdrawn striker pretty regularly. Then again, the indifferent performances in certain games kind of irks me, but he'll do better once he has a regular partner who will become the main scorer.

If he had a strike partner who will finish off the chances, or more midfield runners (Andy/Nasri/Theo/maybe even Diaby if he plays) to charge into the box, he might even reach double figures in assists. Although that may potentially reduce the number of goals he will score, we'll never know for sure.

i chose dudu's beachfootball. it was fantastic and it made me miss dudu so much. i also liked robin's last goal of the season..was good. and nicky's pinky shot vs kiev was not all that spectacular, but i enjoyed him taking his shirt off my player of the season would be almunia. robin was good of course, but i feel that almunia was good this season. without him, we would have conceded much more, and it didn't help that our back four were pretty poor.

anyone has traditional pitch walking around by players and coach video last nite?

I was just watching the highlights of our 4-1 win against Stoke. RVP was at his best with a 2 goal finish. I mean why couldn't he had the same form when we played Man Utd.

Anyways, the part where he won the penalty for us, his touch reminds me so much of the super goal Bergkamp scored against Newcastle. RVP took a touch on one side and then twisted his body to the other side and receive it totally leaving that Stoke defender for dead. Just as he was about to strike, he was tripped and we won the penalty. Great piece of skill. His second goal was equally impressive tho i must say he's damn lucky. I think Delap accidentally headed to RVP thinking he was heading to his GK. RVP took one touch and slam it home volley style in a semi scissor kick volley. Brilliant!

the best for me is vela VS wigan....

yeah... he almost got it. IINM he hasn't scored one for us just yet, although there was the hattrick of assists early this year.

I thought it was a cheeky piece of skill.

The spin past the marker was brilliant, although not as smoothly done as Dennis did. And when he got into the box, he was smart enough to leave a trailing leg to get clipped and went down. Kicking the striker's leg instead of the ball is definitely a foul, but I can't help but think Robin could have skipped past that.

Not that I'm complaining too much hehe, we scored from that.

Oh yeah... just realised that we left out Nasri's goal vs MU and Andy's interception and shot for the 2nd Pool goal in the poll. Oh well, you guys probably have realised that anyway.

It's on Wednesday morning (Malaysian time of course), and will begin between 2.30 am and 3 am.
I don't have the schedule with me though.

But honestly i can't pick any special goals this season simply because there's not one that is particularly outstanding. Dont get me wrong, those mention above here are good goals but to pick 1 special goal, just can't do it.

Well, there was an article I read (or was it a football talkshow?) about the definition of great goals.

Is it the meaning of the goal to the club?

Is it the technical difficulties?

Must it be individual or in a group?

Is it the flow of the goal?

Must it be a long shot? (yeah, most long shots look great )

Must it be unstoppable by the keeper?

etc...


I'll say, just ignore all the definitions Just follow your heart and vote whichever you like

well, maybe that's the part where le Boss can improve on

i do agree that very very seldom le Boss bought someone to replace the first teamer who are very much talented and performed quite OK for his first season such as Samir. Bobby was bought after we lose Overmars. the same with King Henry, he was brought in after we lose le Sulk. Gallas also was brought in after we lose Sulzer

but there were few cases where le Boss bought in someone to improve certain areas of the team. e.g. Gilberto was brought in while we still have Edu and Ray Parlour
