Assuming budget is secondary, I'd go for 8GB RAM of standard spec, faster HDD at 7200-rpm or Hybrid HDD like the Momentus XT, or better still, SSD....

There's hardly any apps that will saturate that kinda memory bandwidth...

um... that model is nearly 7 years old. Apple doesn't make parts anymore.
so you might be looking at a RM1000 + repair cost because the GPU is part of the main logicboard, and those are not cheap smile.gif

Oh damn. It's pretty expensive, thought I could salvage it. Thanks a lot for the heads up smile.gif

I've solved my ram problem. Turns out the 4 sticks of ram cannot work with each other, although all 4 are Kingston, DDR3, 1333MHz. In fact, 3 sticks are similar while the 4th which is also Kingston, but has a different hologram sticker. And if you say that's the odd one causing problem, well no. This is what I did:-

First two sticks coupled with another brand new set Corsair 2x2GB = it works, total 8GB shows up in bios and in activity monitor.

Second two sticks with the different hologram coupled with Corsair = it works too, 8GB in total.

But if you put all 4 sticks of Kingston together = it does not work, only 4GB ram.

Any one knows why? I sure don't.

Dear Sir,

If you are using a Hackintosh i dont think this thread are legally discussing for illegal setup. I would suggest you to go here http://www.insanelymac.com/ for all Hackintosh discussion.

Although I think I should not answer that question, but why insanelymac? Illegal yet LYN has it's own hackintosh forum, by prasys. Anyway, I have solved my problem. Just to learn about the error that's all. And I know the answer.

As general the question shall go to PC forum..as the most u can go on every Original Mac is Apple Hardware Test, which even need to be booted via DVD. Not flaming but it's not logical for me to think even how to diagnose the symptom..

Actually, be it legal or illegal... Apple is something very different from Windows (This was how I feel before trying it out). And users will not simply switch from Windows to Apple if there is no way to try it out, or if trying it out means spending double the money for a Windows machine. I couldn't afford it, and therefore there is no initiative to save money in order to get a real Apple machine. Now that I have tried it via OTHER MEANS, I would infact consider making effort to get myself an Apple. So it is not totally a negative thing for Apple (to consider about).

I see that you all mention the Momentus XT a lot here, do you know where I can get my hands one retail in Malaysia? I went to check Digital Mall last weekend and couldn't find a store which carries it.

well... part of Apple's ease of use & support is that they only use certain hardware specifications. this means that your experience with a Hackintosh is not 100% what Steve & Jony & Bertrand expect you to get...

Quick question:
Buying an iMac 22" for Final Cut video editing.
There's a RM 4300 model and RM 5300 model, major diff is graphics card.

Is the premium justifyable?

thx!

**Exactly, that is why I would want to get the real Apple. If it is already 100% exactly the same with a Hackintosh, why bother to get Apple machines from authorised outlet when I already have one that is doing the same thing?!! Plus, there are tons of software that works well with Windows, there are only a few which we have to try it out in order to know if it works well with Apples. Quickbooks is a good example. They have both Windows and Mac version, but what sellers won't disclose there are minor differences between the two. And just so happens the differences are an important part for my accounting. I can't use the mac version. It does not have what I need. If customers were to jump straight into Apple, in the end... MAC OS gets the blame. It makes ppl think twice next time in accepting/trying something new.

**Agree. There is no way. But why waste time there in something not possible. Hackintosh is every where. It is possible. In the end, I encourage ppl to get the real thing. I have used windows for 15 years, and after 15 years I have decided to switch to Apple. But without the possibility of hackintosh, perhaps another 15 more years also I would still be using Windows, simply because I didn't have the chance to try it out, to compare.

n8210..you don't understand what we're saying. as the question you was asking is about the RAM thing, and your hardware is PC base..It's not about Mac OS whatsoever..It's the fundamental of the machine itself. If u using mac the EFI will auto-configure all the ram setting (CAS latency etc..) where else BIOS sometimes need a manual touch on the parameter..so the best thing to arise this question is on the PC forum..

If you talking about you have using PC since Win95 what's the great thing? Have u ever use PC that is solely a CPU, monitor and keyboard? Have you ever configure the IRQ to define with every single add-on card? Please this forum is not to show off something but to resolve something. If the question is not right for since the 1st step then everything is haywire..

About experience it can be at different way. Myself try it all at the shop, at my former office etc..there's lot's of way to learn Mac..hackintosh made available due to Apple switching to Intel processor..If say PowerPC system is succesful before this I think you will never had a chance even to do such said system..

And one more thing, do your system chimes? Yes for sure not is it? Do you know the Mac chimes is 1st indicator to say the mac hardware is in order..

well... now with Boot Camp, the issue of "can I keep using Windows" is not relevant. you can switch at any time!

this means we r getting a better deal than buying a PC, cos most PCs nowadays cannot install WinXP / Vista, cos no drivers.

anyway... I don't find a Hackintosh a good 'testing' ground, mainly cos its too technical for the prospective Mac users.

newegg, list the momentus price as USD 129 cheaper than OWC 159 price range, but the problem with newegg is that it cannot accept foreign cards or ship to malaysia directly, try comgateway, they could help you purchase and send to you all in all its RM489 way cheaper buying from OWC+Shipping.

before i had a choice between almost 4k asus notebook vs 8k MBP... double the price for almost the same spec. i went the hackintosh route n i was impressed by OSX, so i decided on the MBP smile.gif for me, trying macs at stores is not enough (i have zero friends using macs at the time). sure hackintosh is quite hard, n u dont get the full experience, but i think it's a good justification. i was soooo happy when i got my MBP biggrin.gif

if someone wants to try out iOS... buy ipod touch 1st lar hehehe. most of my iphone user friends have an ipod touch before. if there's a relatively easy way to install iOS on nexus one, sure people will want to try it. but then spoil la, since what i hate most on android phones is the terrible touchscreen
