Hi all,

I have a question about RAID 5 in Mac Pro. Currently my HDD setup is

1 x 320gb
3 x 1.5 Tera HDDs

Using Software RAID 5

I am thinking the following setup.

1. I will use the 320gb as Mac OS + Windows because of the bootcamp partition so I cannot use this drive for RAID 5. True? What if I get another 1.5 tera for the Mac OS X + Windows (so it becomes 4 x 1.5 tera), can I partition this drive even in RAID 5?

2. If I use 3 or 4 HDDs for RAID 5 software, will it be combine into only 1 drive? Can I further partition into several drives?

3. If let say I use 3 x 1.5 Tera, what will be the final capacity of the drive?

4. I am using software RAID 5 on 3 drive, will it be slower than normal individual HDDs? I heard software RAID 5 will reduce the speed performance significantly but I dont know whether still better than individual drives?
Please advise. Thank you.

RAID 5 is definitely faster that single Drive
best all around, lowest failure rate

Hi, I'm thinking of upgrading my RAM because I want my macbook to work faster and want to upgrade the HDD because I download a lot of stuff especially music and movies, currently using 250gb hdd but I have a feeling that it's gonna finish space anytime soon. Anyways what's the maximum amount of RAM I can install into my notebook and how much space of HDD can I get? 4 gb RAM or 6 gb RAM and how much GB for HDD? 500 GB? 1TB? Thanks in advance.

Btw mine is the 13inch aluminium macbook 2.4ghz.
*
impossible to make your internal drive to 1TB

500GB also seem got difficulty, i not sure is there any 2.5 500GB drive
Macbook can install max 4GB (Alu model, currently)
i dont tink there si any 3GB module

hi guys...i got a ibook g4 with the following spec:

G4 PPC 933mhz
640mb ddr ram
currently using mac osx panther 10.3.9

I know that this model can have a ram up to 1.25GB if not mistaken...so my question is, where can i buy these ram modules? must i use the apple certified modules? or can i just get the ordinary brands such as kingston etc?

second is regarding the operating system....im hoping to install macosx leopard but since i dont have a dvd drive bay(mine is just ordinary CDROM drive), i find it impossible...is there any way around this problem?

thanx... biggrin.gif

Apple Releases Java Updates Addressing Critical Vulnerabilities

Apple today released updated versions of its Java for OS X for both OS X 10.5 Leopard and OS X 10.4 Tiger. The updates address several vulnerabilities that could allow maliciously crafted Java applets to gain elevated privileges leading to arbitrary code execution.

The updates come less than a month after former Apple engineer Landon Fuller released a proof-of-concept exploit demonstrating the vulnerabilities in order to bring attention to the issue. While the vulnerabilities Fuller highlighted were discovered last August and patched by Sun last December, Apple had yet to address the issues in its own implementation of Java until today's releases.

- Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 (158 MB)
Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 delivers improved reliability, security, and compatibility for Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.7 and later.

This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_13, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_21.

Please quit all web browsers before installing this update.

- Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 9 (80.11 MB)
Java for Mac OS X 10.4, Release 9 delivers improved reliability, security and compatibility for J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 and later.

This release updates J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19 and J2SE 1.4.2 to version 1.4.2_21.

Please quit all web browsers before installing this update.

Further information is available in Apple's security documents (Leopard, Tiger) associated with the updates.

Another Mac OSX update news

Apple releases Safari 4.0.1

Just a week after the introduction of Safari 4 itself, Apple has patched it with Safari 4.0.1 (web link not yet available).

The update mends compatibility problems between the new Safari and certain iPhoto '09 features, particularly integration with Places and publishing photos directly to Facebook. Other bug fixes havent' been mentioned.

As of this writing, 4.0.1 is only available through Software Update.

Apple posts Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0

A lower-key update has come Wednesday evening in the form of Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0 (1.8MB).

Upgrading provides various bug fixes but is targeted at compatibility between certain Macs and both the Wireless Mighty Mouse as well as the Wireless Keyboard.

Only Macs with a Broadcom-made Bluetooth chipset will see the update. Installing requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later.

Apple issues fix for slow SATA speeds on new MacBook Pros

In one of its quicker turnarounds, Apple has released a firmware update for its mid-2009 MacBook Pro lineup that addresses Serial ATA speeds that were unintentionally cut in half.

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7 (3.4MB) mends a problem with the just-refreshed notebook line which effectively downgraded their SATA II drive interfaces to the original SATA specification.

The difference didn't affect the performance of traditional platter-based hard drives, which are rarely fast enough to tax the 1.5 gigabits per second the original SATA spec allows, but has been a thorn in the side for those hoping to use solid-state drives, or SSDs. Recent buyers in Apple's support discussions and elsewhere have noticed that faster aftermarket SSDs installed in their systems have been artificially capped at the older standard's speed. Earlier unibody MacBook Pros already support the full 3 gigabits per second maximum of SATA II, revealing the limit to be a bug rather than a conscious choice.

Installing the firmware requires a 13-, 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro running at least Mac OS X 10.5.7. As the extra speed can only be seen by drives that Apple itself doesn't use, the Mac maker warns that it can't provide official support for disks that take advantage of the EFI patch.

Instead of replacing the internal HDD of the mac mini, I've now decided to use the HDD i recently bought as an external extra HDD for the mini. I'm looking for a 2.5'' HDD enclosure with a firewire 800 port. Any ideas?
*
enclosure for fw800 is hard to find

but complete build external hdd, like My Passport Studio does provided fw800

if it's 3.5" then easy
