This is a healthy competition which would benefit us as consumer, thus nVidia has to reconsidering their marketing technique. nVidia always produce their top notch cards with always over RM2k for the past, so, thumb up for ATI!

Also, I don't see nVidia why rename the same product and "cheat" consumers to buy the same thing.

Well, no point to wait for the price after it drops, if you wait for the price drop then you really never need to buy pc stuffs anymore.

ATI's dual GPU offerings, the HD4850 X2 and HD4870 X2, don't seem to be getting the price cut at all and the HD 4830 will also stay the same price. The HD 4830 will soon be replaced by the upcomming RV740, which is also expected to launch along side the RV790 chip.

More importantly is that this adds some evidence to earlier rumors on the Radeon HD 4890 launch date of April 6.

If everything holds true, the next month or so will prove very interesting for everyone in the video card market. Both desktop and mobile users are getting new chips and with lots of new numbers flying around, the fight for title of king will surely be a heated one.

If this baby is going to compete with GTX 285, so the price should be around $299-$349, right?

But I don't know is it a wise step for ATI drop the 4870 to $149, coz it not only affect the NVidia card, but also ATI own product, now 4870 CF only need $298, yet 4870 X2 is selling at $399-$449, and this 4890, who is going to buy this card which is only 20%+ better then a 4870 instead of 4870 CF which offer 80%+ better?

If I am not wrong, 4890 X2 is just a turbo version of 48770 X2, maybe 20% performance boost again, price, maybe $449-$499? yet nothing can beat the 4870 CF performance over price value.

just because you can milk 4870 and 4800 series doesnt mean you just dry it out..it been too long edi,come out with new series and much more improvement la at least..20%?? come on...i guess a 4870 running at 850mhz core should equally more or less the same...

I'm using 4870 512MB and with a Full HD 24 inch LCD.. With everything set to high COD4 lacked after playing it for 30 minutes non stop, Fear2 and GRID will start to lack in 15 minutes time.

That's why I'm thinking of changing my gc to GTX 260 / HD4870 1gb / CF HD4870 512MB.

Which one is better?

Latest rumours stated that they use a tweaked architecture of Radeon HD 4850/70. Well, when we have believers, we have skeptics as well, so I don't blame you for being a skeptic.

So, let's see how much better gtx 280 is

25.4*x=(30.8-25.4)
x=(5.4)/25.4

21%.

Sounds like the same level as gtx285 to me.

You can take a look at other games, but it seems like 4870 is closer to gtx285 on lower resolutions, so I picked the highest here.

That's definitely a case of lack of system RAM.


You get stuttering even with 2GB in Unreal Engine 3 games if your OS install is not new.

SLi/CF is for user to buy another same gc to boost their pc graphic performance instead of throw away current gc
and SLI/CF & other dual gpu graphic cards have micro stuttering problems
of coz single gpu is better than dual as 1st gpu must synchronize with 2nd gpu during processing

Indeed multi gpu delivers more performance. Lets say if one's want to buy GTX285 or 4850x2/GTX285 or 9800GX2 (if both card are at the same price), i'd recommend GTX285 over 4850x2/9800GX2.

but it seems you doesn't aware of some known multi-gpu issues, try to google up/search at youtube.

I thought the HD4890(512MB) is priced 200$USD so at least RM 700-900 + is acceptable..I guess you mean 1GB version,since 1GB version is yes,RM 1100+

all the manufactury stil dono the actual SRP yet.

so estimated the selling price around RM1100-1200.
if RM700-900.

from what i heard, other country like US retailer get rebate from ATI. tat's why they can sell cheaper than malaysia.

It's 250~300 usd dude. Only estimates around. I figure it's going to be 1GB version only though. Seeing as how rates went back to the roof these days, 1k~1.2k is completely possible.

Palit Sonic dual fan is way better than HIS IcedQ single fan.

hie guys,

Maybe i can start off some history for my case ...

recently i just bought nVidia 9800 GTX+ DK graphic card connecting under HDMI --> LCD but my text distorted under HDMI but not VGA.

Tried many ways of installing latest driver but no luck.

So, i hope tomorrow i pay lowyat a visit they will offer me something good or some solutions for this issue..

Worst case, i might change my graphic card to Ati 4850 or 4870...but i heard there are new refresh graphic card from ATI.....so what is your opinion?

Wait or just grab the graphic card or any recommendations?

Appreciate the help!

4890 will be starting selling at malaysia on april or not ? i dont think so...if the thing really still have one month away to sell in market, then usa reviewer sure got the card already.

Product release need to go through marketing and advertising first before selling in market to get bigger crowd attention....

looks at intel, at vista...create havoc in the market first then u can see it in the market selling....

From what I see, CUDA & PhysX isn't doing much damage to ATi. When OpenCL is out, HD 4xxx series also can use openCL(so does g92 and gtx260/280 I think), and CUDA & PhysX will be nullified already(maybe not physX, but cuda, yes. The whole industry is waiting for open standard).

Dx11 exploits unified shader, that's why it will work with Radeon HD 4870 as well(and the geforces starting with g80).

Nvidia even "wants" ati to have their card running physX too.

Actually it is possbile for 3xxx/4xxx card to run PhysX/CUDA but ati refuse to cooperate with nvidia to do so.
maybe ati see the bigger picture behind nvidia's motive?

Speculation only... wait till it got released.
Im curious as to how DAAMIT will improve it lor.

If you compare 4830 to 4850, it seem stream processor doesnt affect the performance too much. It will have to be something good like higher speed + specially tweaked drivers (lower IQ probably?). It would be a miracle to squeze 30% out of hand picked R770.

if like you all said, the HD4890 only 15-30% than 4870.
so the price won't hav huge different.

HD4890 RM10XX
HD4870 RM550 -> 1GB ? (1 USD = 3.665 MYR )
HD4850 RM470 (1 USD = 3.665 MYR )

Yupe, plus the GTX 260 Sonic OC performance is on par with the stock GTX 280 and beat the crap out HD 4870.
Proof? I own a Sapphire HD 4870 512MB, one of my friend own a Toxic 1GB, and another guy own GTX 260 sonic. I can tell you that in higher reso, Sonic really performed well. Price per quality ratio, I think Sonic is the best for time being plus got nice cooler also.

But, I maybe gonna wait for the HD4890 reviews and definitely gonna grab the custom cooled version which will arrive somewhere around May or Jun. I think it's gonna be the best bang for my money if it really can outperform HD4870 by 20% different w/out any problem.

4890's PCB is definitely redesigned, perhaps to allow more overclockability.



They're saying that retail OCs can go up to 900Mhz GPU. Of course you can OC more (ARHMM)

according to fudzilla HD 4890 is barely better than 4870 1 gb may be at beast 5 fps increase in most games but nvidia will release gtx 275 in 2nd week of april and fudzilla posted the specs looking at it i suggest its goona beat stock gtx 285 trust me if you only oc core by 30mhz and memory by 200 mhz which is easily do able it has 240 Stream proc like gtx 285 and architecture based on gtx 295 it sure will smoke gtx 285 stock trust me

gtx 285 has 650 core gtx 275 has 633 core
gtx 285 has 1250 memory gtx 275 has 1164 woooooooooow
can easily oc 17 mhz and 86 mem with stock v core and further even
has 240 sp like gtx 285 only diff is its 448 bit gtx 285 is 512 bit
but advantage is its based on gtx 295 architecture on single gpu and price is USD 249 only for 1 gb card and 2 gb might come soon

For existing 4870 owner, i think just get another 4870 and do CF will do.

I am little disappointed to the performance of this 4890. They took so long just to get this much for a performance card.

I will just get a 4890 superclocked version and won't do CF anymore until 5xxx series.

dun get confused.

the RV740 128 bit refers to 4750 (2 version, ddr3/5), not 4890.
4890 is 256 bit, ddr5.

bandwidth of the card is calculated by it s GPU supported bit & also memory speed.
example, 4870 wit 256 bit & fast ddr5 actually has more bandwidth den gtx260 (448 bit) wit slower ddr3.

ATI & nvidia opted for different die strategy.
because GPU with higher width (bits) also means bigger die, it will be mor expensive to produce to produce.

i think 512mb also ok cause in CF mode... it no share the 2nd card ram... it only share the Core for graphic Processing....

bro the red coloured square means can CF without problems. but AMD recommends Cf'ing with 4850 or 4850X2 (which is the read square with dot in it)

heard that the brand who launch the 4890 before 2 April will ban by the ATI for newer model - Overclock Version and others newer models.

Overclock Version will launched midle of april.
and non-reference (HIS next generation ICEQ , ICEQ5 !!) will launch in MAY or end of APRIL

Guys, planning to buy the OC version from Zhen Wei, but it's still an uncertainty because of the stock arrival maybe a bit late la. I wanna use it for the Cyberfusion Lan Party, I'm sure most of you guys heard bout that already.
But the thing is, only the non OC version will be available before the party.

So, is it the same technology? or will the oc version have a better cooler? Or can one just overclock it and take it to the same level as the overclocked version by not harming the card~ Dilemma here. help pls~

anybody have any idea about it?

Edit: can Acbel M8 PSU can support this card?

well why do u want to speculate what he's gonna do?

at this stage i dun think anyone here can give u an accurate answer for the HIS 4890 reference and oc version's difference. but based on my experience of HIS 4850 IceQ4 after playing around with the bios. I realized that turbo and turbox version difference in BIOS, is the fan profile as well as the clock speed. that's pretty much all. IceQ4's cooler is dead silent, even u ramp it up to 100% it is still no where near auditable. the 4850 turbo version cooler's fan in other word is under utilized in comparison to the turboX. For the PCB and chips being used on HIS 4850, I read from alot of ppl's opinions that they are identical, but I couldn't verify that as turboX wasn't available in msia before I sold off my HIS 4850 turbo IceQ4.

Don't worry, the reference/stock cooler is awesome actually. The heat ramps up just because AMD has a strict sound level restriction, so the fans are running pretty low and the temps really high. Well, their chips can run up to 90C no problem so that's why they never bothered.

Sapphire's cooler is better though, tongue.gif .

The temp override has been lowered from 80 to 70 degrees celsius, so the fan will push more air at lower temps and be slightly louder (but basing on anything like the 4870, still really silent).

I have a saphire 4870 with me. My Mobo can support Xfire.
My option is whether should i:-
1) Wait for price to drop and buy 1 more 4870 to Xfire? blink.gif
2) Sell off my 4870 and upgrade to 4890? drool.gif

Can a 4890 outperform a 4870X2? I know 4870Xfire almost close to 4870X2 version.

Branding and marketing cost bro... and also extra research for their RND to push the card further so that it can stand out from the rest of the brand card. XFX always like to do that and thats why they are famous...

BTW it's not just C-Zone that's offering the Sapphire at a low price for preorder.



Thundermatch's price is ~259USD (Convert to ringgit using Google), they have a local branch in Melaka so I guess I'll get it from them after the reviews.

the curent sapphire promo is because amd is offering a rebate on amd/ati products at retailer level
so instead of earning from the product.. price vs cost.. all are aiming for the rebate..

but u need high volume..
thats y its cheap..

after that the price will go up as usual for initial launch products.

Both 3DMark 06 & Vantage run on 3.0GHz , there show 2.1GHz b'cos effected by Intel Speedstep . blush.gif

just got my sapphire 4870X2, that damn card is pretty hot. I think i will just forget about the 4890X2 as the performance boost is not going to be justified by the price increase. Maybe 4890 is just another overclock version of the 4870.

but the cpu score shown on vantage is still vry low,and urs is a quad.my e8400 oc'ed to 4.1 ghz as shown as my sig can archieve 30k+ on cpu score.maybe its suprising to me bcoz i'm still noob in this sweat.gif

lol.but how many can get ti 1 ghz?i dont think all chips are capable of doing that.my guess a stock hd4890 will be on par with a gtx275.just plus minus few frames like how the hd4870 1gb and gtx260 fair up

why the benchi variance is huge....

i remember the previous bench on 4890 chart, is still below 285 around 5~10%..... this is on par ...can't belive my eyes hahaha

lol its only leading like 6-7 frames per-game and i am talking about 4890 at stock speed....and u are paying like 100 bucks more for that than the 4870? as i seen at garage sales they are selling like 900+ ....think about it wink.gif

lol 10.1 or not doesnt matter much....if it matter so much nvidia would have already gone to dx10.1....this card is suppose to be a response to gtx 260 core 216....it did better than 260 alright but not by a huge margin....probably gtx 275 would surpass its performance again....anyway its pretty close between the 2 cards either way

So you can pick either HD 4890 and GTX 275..
You keep overclock both of them..you will get either simillar results or just diff 1-5% only ..

Hurm.. I tried to overclock HD4890 to 1GHz but I can only reach 970/1170 and it's pretty stable since I can play GRID, COD4 and HAWX for 3 hours straight. Never tried with Crysis....... yet~

Edit: with the fan running at 100%, I can play for 3 hours straight with and the load temp is just around 63-66c
with the fan running at 90%, 3 hours straight, load temp = 72c

riva tuner is buggy with vista 64.

the reason i was curious with the hd4890 is actually the burst speed on mem

if u guys actually had hd4000 series.. u would know that overclocking the core doesnt give that much of a boost compared to mem.

but for some reason the hd4890 does..

Me also having the same problem with Riva tuner but I'm using Vista 32. So end up using CC to OC it.

Right now I'm trying to push it to 970/1180 and testing its stability. Still trying. Maybe will post the result after this.

Curious to know your overclocking result and your review about this card's performance.

Besides 2 isolated cases (CoD4 driver issues I think, and STALKER Clear Sky where 10.1 actually uses more processing so it's slower), the 4890 is mostly on par with the 280, and in some games beats the 285.


Meh I don't think in any case the RM300 extra for the 285 is worth it. This card sells at 950 in Thundermatch, and the OCing to 1Ghz (at least 900-950) deal is sweet enough to justify the RM100+ extra on top of the 4870 1GB.


So the 4890 IMHO is a great deal if you're looking for a GTX 285-ish card that will handle the majority of games now and upcoming at a HD resolution. For the RM300 (more like 400 actually) saved from the 285, keep it for a water cooling system so you get 1.1-1.2Ghz (need to use softmod volts I think).

Just finished overclocking HD4890 to 990/1170

Test it with Crysis FPS
1920x1080, all set to very high, 4xaa

Result.. FPS = 18FPS - 23FPS
Fan speed = 100%
Load temp = 69c
and I took the FPS reading while playing in one of heaviest shooting scene.
Played it for one hour straight. No blue screen..


Somebody asked for the details on the driver version that comes with the card for the HD4890 GC. here's the info about the driver.

hd4890 oc 900/1000 (stock fan speed) crossfire is at 71fps

this was my initial test today ..

both running single raptor x.. hdd

tried to make it clean installation for the crossfire setup.
the nvidia drivers was causing some issue.

Added on April 2, 2009, 4:12 pmalso crysis ure comparing all at unplayable frame rates.

ure comparing a 1k card with a 1.3k card which part is unreasonable??
prices above 1.3k is usually game bundle, extra warranty etc.

and u dont mind a vacuum hoover sound at 1ghz when it cant run at stock fan setting
compared to a 1.3k card with stock fan setting overclock..

anyways i have both cards on sli crossfire.
waiting for new drivers before i post results

but i can tell u now the hd4890 is a bit buggy and is slower than my gtx285 flashed to ftw bios.
if 1ghz is equivalent to a gtx285
a gtx285 ftw is around 11 percent faster would means a hd4890 has to be clocked to 1.1ghz.
anybody can tell u the ftw speeds are easy to reach

actually what do u mean by proper? coz afaik even those 1.5k GTX 285 are all using stock cooler. what cstkl1 means is that regardless of 1.5k or 1.3k GTX 285 may be, most of them are using stock cooler (but of coz now there are non-reference 285 with better cooler coming soon, maybe that's what u mean?). It's just that Nvidia's stock cooler is doing extremely well IMO (and also stated in other sites), you don't really need to set the fan speed to 100% for 285 just to reach very high clock speed, coz their auto fan speed normally tend to be able to handle the higher temperature

Even at RM1350 the 4890 is RM400 cheaper, and that's a lot of money that you can spend on the card/elsewhere. They're still selling cheapo 285s at 1450+ here (Melaka) so I could raise more hell actually.

[H] and FiringSquad said they did not need to change fan to 100% to OC to 900+.

And the 4890 uses much less wattage than the 275, which draws power almost like an 285.

ive already said 900 is ok on stock fan indirectly ..anything above on crossfire testing both dvi is not possible stock fan

its more like ure convincing ureself only

current driver for the hd4890 on crossfire is buggy

theres a lot u can tell about ati since fan boys dont even want to admit

overclocking ati cards especially hd4000 depends also whether ure using both dvi's or not aka dual screen or 30 inch monster.

well just saw the zotac gtx275 amp version posted

the clocks are exactly the same other than than the shader compared to the gtx285amp
but its higher than the stock gtx285 for core and mem, while shader is the same.

this is really interesting

hope the gtx275 doesnt have a lower core/shader ratio.
if not that heck its going to clock as good and perform as well .
only limitation is the mem amount for high res. compared to gtx285.

looks like gtx285 is going to be eol folks.

basicly we get what we pay for. at 900 range . 4890 is a good deal already .

most of us is normal user only , we dint OC or maybe oc abit. , we dint CF or SLI. that why the 4850 sell like hot cake when it 1st come out.

we seek for best price performance or best value card . not the extreme to top end card lol .
