I'm using 4870 512MB and with a Full HD 24 inch LCD.. With everything set to high COD4 lacked after playing it for 30 minutes non stop, Fear2 and GRID will start to lack in 15 minutes time.
That's why I'm thinking of changing my gc to GTX 260 / HD4870 1gb / CF HD4870 512MB. Which one is better? |

Yupe, plus the GTX 260 Sonic OC performance is on par with the stock GTX 280 and beat the crap out HD 4870.
Proof? I own a Sapphire HD 4870 512MB, one of my friend own a Toxic 1GB, and another guy own GTX 260 sonic. I can tell you that in higher reso, Sonic really performed well. Price per quality ratio, I think Sonic is the best for time being plus got nice cooler also. But, I maybe gonna wait for the HD4890 reviews and definitely gonna grab the custom cooled version which will arrive somewhere around May or Jun. I think it's gonna be the best bang for my money if it really can outperform HD4870 by 20% different w/out any problem. |

Guys, planning to buy the OC version from Zhen Wei, but it's still an uncertainty because of the stock arrival maybe a bit late la. I wanna use it for the Cyberfusion Lan Party, I'm sure most of you guys heard bout that already.
But the thing is, only the non OC version will be available before the party. So, is it the same technology? or will the oc version have a better cooler? Or can one just overclock it and take it to the same level as the overclocked version by not harming the card~ Dilemma here. help pls~ anybody have any idea about it? Edit: can Acbel M8 PSU can support this card? QUOTE(area61 @ Apr 1 2009, 09:57 PM) lol.but how many can get ti 1 ghz?i dont think all chips are capable of doing that.my guess a stock hd4890 will be on par with a gtx275.just plus minus few frames like how the hd4870 1gb and gtx260 fair up Hurm.. I tried to overclock HD4890 to 1GHz but I can only reach 970/1170 and it's pretty stable since I can play GRID, COD4 and HAWX for 3 hours straight. Never tried with Crysis....... yet~Edit: with the fan running at 100%, I can play for 3 hours straight with and the load temp is just around 63-66c with the fan running at 90%, 3 hours straight, load temp = 72c This post has been edited by gto87: Apr 2 2009, 02:10 AM |

QUOTE(wen9x88 @ Apr 2 2009, 03:37 AM) Nope, it's very loud and annoying. But, since I'm using a headphone I don't even hear the sound while playing all the games I mentioned before. So, now I'm trying to reduce the fan 5% for every 3 hours of gaming so that I can find the best fan speed that will suit my overclocked gc. Will post it here later.. QUOTE(cstkl1 @ Apr 2 2009, 09:45 AM) fan set max Me also having the same problem with Riva tuner but I'm using Vista 32. So end up using CC to OC it.overclock via cc atm. riva tuner is buggy with vista 64. the reason i was curious with the hd4890 is actually the burst speed on mem if u guys actually had hd4000 series.. u would know that overclocking the core doesnt give that much of a boost compared to mem. but for some reason the hd4890 does.. Right now I'm trying to push it to 970/1180 and testing its stability. Still trying. Maybe will post the result after this. Curious to know your overclocking result and your review about this card's performance. |

Just finished overclocking HD4890 to 990/1170
Test it with Crysis FPS 1920x1080, all set to very high, 4xaa Result.. FPS = 18FPS - 23FPS Fan speed = 100% Load temp = 69c and I took the FPS reading while playing in one of heaviest shooting scene. Played it for one hour straight. No blue screen.. Somebody asked for the details on the driver version that comes with the card for the HD4890 GC. here's the info about the driver. Driver Packaging Version 8.592-090303a-077127E Provider ATI Technologies Inc. 2D Driver Version 8.01.01.882 2D Driver File Path /REGISTRY/MACHINE/SYSTEM/ControlSet001/Control/Class/{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}/0001 Direct3D Version 8.14.10.0647 OpenGL Version 6.14.10.8543 Catalyst™ Control Center Version 2009.0303.2224.40202 EDIT: very tired.. and will continue OCing later tonight. Having a hard time pushing the 4890 to 1GHz, maybe I'm not that good in Overclocking GC or maybe I should wait for a proper driver for the card. Anyways, for me, this card have a remarkable overclocking ability (I'm not comparing it's performance with any cards). But pity the driver is not out yet.
QUOTE(cstkl1 @ Apr 2 2009, 08:15 PM) well just saw the zotac gtx275 amp version posted Wow, now that's pretty impressive. Well, from what I read in the reviews before, the GTX 275 was launched with one sole reason only, to battle off the Radeon HD 4890 and I got to say they done it pretty well. the clocks are exactly the same other than than the shader compared to the gtx285amp but its higher than the stock gtx285 for core and mem, while shader is the same. this is really interesting hope the gtx275 doesnt have a lower core/shader ratio. if not that heck its going to clock as good and perform as well . only limitation is the mem amount for high res. compared to gtx285. looks like gtx285 is going to be eol folks. Added on April 2, 2009, 8:16 pm that guy was i was just telling my view on my hardware config. itching to try the gtx 275 now..kekek But need to know the price 1st. Do anybody have any info about the price for GTX275 in Malaysia? |

Well Sapphire already listed HD4890 1GB in their HD4800 drivers list but the driver is not available for time being. Guess maybe in one week time it'll be available..

QUOTE(valent @ Apr 4 2009, 02:22 AM) My idle temp for 4890 is YUpe it's perfectly normal for the card because the fan speed never goes above 32%. I also asked about the same problem before, You can refer to my previous post few pages back.61'c Idle 74'c Load is the idle normal ? i see websites review their idle all mostly 51'c anyone that got Sapphire 4890 can give feedback on their temps? thanks! Added on April 4, 2009, 8:45 am QUOTE(TristanX @ Apr 4 2009, 01:11 AM) Bleh, I'd prefer adding another 4890 and put it as the first GPU before crossfire with my existing 4870. It's not like a huge boost selling my 4870 and buy 4890. 4890 is only 10% more performance comparing it to 4870. Hurm. Ok now, boosting your performance is one thing and getting it done w/out spending a lot of money is another thing.Since 4870's price is dropping (and will drop again in future), I think it's better to sell off your GC now rather than later. Anyway, I think 4890's price will drop again because Nvidia launched a better card at the same price. This post has been edited by gto87: Apr 4 2009, 08:47 AM |

QUOTE(tech_frix @ Apr 4 2009, 11:49 AM) It's actually depends on the driver for the HD4890 to shine. I'm not sure that there will be a huge difference but for sure the difference will be something to talk about. If after the Driver release the HD4890 still doesn't shine then just wait for another price slash. |

QUOTE(Neo8663 @ Apr 6 2009, 01:05 AM) I'd tested two HD4890 GCs and I got the same result for both. The Idle temp should be around 60-63c and the load temp should be around 71-76c.But in my opinion the temp is that high just because the fan speed never reached above 40% even at load. Stays at 23%-35% most of the time. I changed the fan speed manually and I'm not worried about the temp anymore. This post has been edited by gto87: Apr 6 2009, 03:28 AM |

QUOTE(sniper69 @ Apr 6 2009, 10:47 AM) QUOTE(piumiu @ Apr 6 2009, 10:55 AM) as in my case. i have a lot of fans so it does not make a big difference in terms of fan noise. Piumiu, I set the fan to 45%, the temp didn't exceed 76% after 3 hours of playing crysis plus it won't be that noisy. You can give it a try and let us know the result.50-60% noise is around the same. thats why i stick to 60%. but i do feel the heat from the casing compared to the 4870 and 260 even at night time. QUOTE(rsangel @ Apr 6 2009, 11:01 AM) 60%= it's ok, the noise level is quite low.90%=Min hair dryer speed. But, for me, you only need to manually set your fan above 80% if you're planning to overclock it. This post has been edited by gto87: Apr 6 2009, 11:43 AM |

QUOTE(pikacu @ Apr 8 2009, 02:42 AM) some nice info on HD4890 : http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=90117&page=2 Pergh, I don't even know how to do those things so, I'm not dare enough to do it. 1) Two users that bump their vgpu to 1.35(stock : 1.31) able to hit 1000Mhz core clock (im not sure either they have golden chip or not, but worth a try) 2) 1200Mhz memory speed (4800Mhz) is achievable with air cooling. they use VoltageFactory to bump the vgpu : http://www.awardfabrik.de/forum/showthread.php?t=5707 good luck to HD4890 user Will try to google and gain some knowledge about it anyway. Btw, I contacted the Sapphire Tech Support Center to ask them about the HD4890 driver and they replied to me saying that the driver will be available sometime this week.
