That's definitely a case of lack of system RAM.
You get stuttering even with 2GB in Unreal Engine 3 games if your OS install is not new.

4890's PCB is definitely redesigned, perhaps to allow more overclockability.
They're saying that retail OCs can go up to 900Mhz GPU. Of course you can OC more (ARHMM) This post has been edited by X.E.D: Mar 18 2009, 07:55 PM |

Someone tested it, 990Mhz on stock cooling.
After using water and more voltage, 1.2Ghz! |

Someone copied the Nova page before it was removed. Wheee.
Intel Core I7 920 @ 3800MHz Asus Rampage 2 Extreme Mainboard Corsair Dominator 1600MHz 6GB Triple Channel Kit PowerColor ATI Radeon 4890 1024MB / Asus NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 1024MB Windows Vista 64-Bit Ultimate Both cards using supplied drivers 3DM06 GTX 285: 20275 HD4890: 19321 HD4890 @ 990/1150: 21203 HD4890 OC CFX: 24538 Vantage with PhysX GTX 285: P14699 (CPU - 50551, GPU - 11889) HD4890: P11160 (CPU - 17378, GPU - 9960) HD4890 OC: P12645 (CPU - 17405, GPU - 11574) HD4890 OC CFX: P17874 (CPU - 17358, GPU - 18053) Remember, the 4870 was behind the GTX 260 192SP in Vantage, but still matched or beat in most of the game benches present. Now that 90 OCed is basically the same as 285, games should do quite well with it actually. And of course, price. 285 is 14xx IIRC, 4890 is 1090 (and lower), 11xx for the 900Mhz OC model. I expect 950 to be doable with the majority of the cards since the OC ed is already 900. This post has been edited by X.E.D: Mar 27 2009, 09:06 AM |

The temp override has been lowered from 80 to 70 degrees celsius, so the fan will push more air at lower temps and be slightly louder (but basing on anything like the 4870, still really silent).

BTW it's not just C-Zone that's offering the Sapphire at a low price for preorder.
Thundermatch's price is ~259USD (Convert to ringgit using Google), they have a local branch in Melaka so I guess I'll get it from them after the reviews. |

FiringSquad review shows a much better case for the 4890.
http://firingsquad.com/hardware/ati_radeon...eforce_gtx_275/ Besides 2 isolated cases (CoD4 driver issues I think, and STALKER Clear Sky where 10.1 actually uses more processing so it's slower), the 4890 is mostly on par with the 280, and in some games beats the 285. Meh I don't think in any case the RM300 extra for the 285 is worth it. This card sells at 950 in Thundermatch, and the OCing to 1Ghz (at least 900-950) deal is sweet enough to justify the RM100+ extra on top of the 4870 1GB. So the 4890 IMHO is a great deal if you're looking for a GTX 285-ish card that will handle the majority of games now and upcoming at a HD resolution. For the RM300 (more like 400 actually) saved from the 285, keep it for a water cooling system so you get 1.1-1.2Ghz (need to use softmod volts I think). ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by X.E.D: Apr 2 2009, 03:58 PM |

QUOTE(metsatsu @ Apr 2 2009, 06:41 PM) actually what do u mean by proper? coz afaik even those 1.5k GTX 285 are all using stock cooler. what cstkl1 means is that regardless of 1.5k or 1.3k GTX 285 may be, most of them are using stock cooler (but of coz now there are non-reference 285 with better cooler coming soon, maybe that's what u mean?). It's just that Nvidia's stock cooler is doing extremely well IMO (and also stated in other sites), you don't really need to set the fan speed to 100% for 285 just to reach very high clock speed, coz their auto fan speed normally tend to be able to handle the higher temperature I meant proper as his "game bundles, fancy packaging, warranty" as if SEA region cards have "better" warranties at all. Even at RM1350 the 4890 is RM400 cheaper, and that's a lot of money that you can spend on the card/elsewhere. They're still selling cheapo 285s at 1450+ here (Melaka) so I could raise more hell actually.[H] and FiringSquad said they did not need to change fan to 100% to OC to 900+. And the 4890 uses much less wattage than the 275, which draws power almost like an 285. ![]() If you want better idle power, just flash the BIOS with lower GDDR5 clocks and voltage. From observation however, looks like GT200 heats up much faster (uses more power) once you touch core and shader clocks. This post has been edited by X.E.D: Apr 2 2009, 07:35 PM |

No, fan speed ramps up earlier. It now goes into drive at 70 degrees instead of 80 (because of users whining).
The 4890 at 70 C will be noisier than the 4870. The 4870 will get to 80 C much easier than the 4890. |

The fan itself is the same, so at 100% (full power) it's gonna sound the same.

I can't justify spending on the 4890 TBH. Don't game much, and the X3 710 showed that my 2900 is still very, very potent for the games I play.
It's either that I win this contest: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=89891 Or I don't get one. There's better stuff to spend on for me, like a huge Wacom Tablet and a 2560 monitor (theft-proof) when I stay in SG. This post has been edited by X.E.D: Apr 5 2009, 07:39 PM |

Did anyone post the Rivatuner patch yet? There's one that allows you to use it with the 4890 now.

I thought we already came upon the conclusion that nothing can beat the XFX sticker.
