Guys, looking at the bleak economy and how things are churning around right now, I think it is a suitable time to address this issue: Which budget headphone you should get to get the optimum price/performance ratio.. For now (criticisms aside please), everyone is most welcomed to contribute their opinions on this topic..

Due to ambiguity, it is decided the term "budget headphone" should be used for headphones within the Rm100-200 range..Anything below the range would be considered inexpensive..

~Rm100-200:
1) KSC 75 (even though this is below 100, it certainly qualifies as a top contender in the category)
2) ON3
3) PX100
4) PX200
5) Sennheiser HD 201/202
6)




For starters, I'd like to give a head start:

No.1 HIGHLY RECOMMENDED : KOSS KSC 75 (~RM80)..
SQ: 5/5
Comfort: 4/5 (Awarded "just" a subpar 4(which is an average, given that ksc 75 is an absolutely terrific headphone) considering the fact ksc 75 utilises clip-ons, which would be slightly inconvenient if you are an active athlete or constantly on the move)
Build and design: 4/5 (another low point for ksc 75 because design-wise, let's just say that it doesn't quite have that X factor )
Note: Many people are customizing their ksc 75s right now, as we speak..So, enthusiasts please look up some mods online, google it, "yahoo" it..whatever and I'm sure you'll come up with some additional mods that'll really let your ksc 75 shine...Some even do recabling jobs to improve the SQ! Outrageous endeavour..Pay respect to those professionals!!!
Value: 5/5
KSC 75 wins the best budget headphone hands down, no questions asked. At a mere price of USD 6(~Rm23) in Radioshack, it is a steal..For fellow malaysians though, you can always get this pair of jewel for ~RM 80..Which, IMHO, is still a great bargain..

Other headphones I own and recommend:

Sennheiser HD 201(~RM100)
Sennheiser HD 212 pro(~RM200)
Creative EP 630(~RM50)

Headphones/Earphones I'm looking at:
1. Soundmagic PL 30 ~rm100++ coupled with Fiio3 amp
2. Shure SCL3 (there's a sale going on now, apparently they're going for ~$59 plus free shipping)
3. LEAR LE01..(an alternative to EP630, if not better..Hmmmm....I'm really dubious about that....=)

IMHO, HD 201 is worth every single cent for its price because it's very comfortable, produces decent sound, and doesn't burn a hole in your wallet. Looks cool, albeit a bit bulky if you want to walk around with it slinging down your neck, and exudes a funky sense about yourself..Good accessory to add an attitude to your already unique self~

HD 212 pro..Hmm..Though it is a good pair of headphone and received numerous encouraging feedbacks about its performance, I would grade it a low 4/5..Why? Because it's a bit too expensive for the casual and average user who squirms at the idea of paying ~RM 200 for a pair of headphones. Naturally, if you are an average user who steps into the world of audiophiles and upscale headphones for the first time, the prospect of paying RM200 for a headphone seems daunting..And, due to this aspect, you, the user, would have this "pre-purchase bias", thinking for 200RM, this pair of headphone would produce great,absolutely mind-blowing SQ. Sorry to tell you this, that ain't gonna happen with this pair of headphones..Definitely, this is a pair of quality headphone, as can be judged by its appearance and build(which is highly commendable and looks very very "nerdy", in a positive way)..However, I'll still recommend getting 10 KSC 75s if you're willing to pay that price

Creative EP 630..Just look at my emo up there..
This shows enough? But I'll briefly describe it here anyway..It's the king of budget BASSHEAD STUNNER!!! Literally..The bass itself will leave you stunned and craving for more..For it's price range, I can steadfastly claim no other comes close to this pair of IEM..(Of course, there is this pair of LEAR LE01 running madly among our LYN green fields now, trying to claim this top post from EP 630).. For a mere RM55, which would otherwise cost you Rm110 if you were to get from a retail shop, this is another INEXPENSIVE(notice that I don't use the word CHEAP) investment which would prove to be an intelligent move in the long run..





P.S I'm in USA now, and I'm planning to bring some KSC 75s back home next time for you fellow forumers, who've helped me through the process of learning and unlearning of this audiophile world..Please pm me if you're interested..I'll post a thread here when I'm coming home to my homeland, Malaysia..

Shure earphones are high-end stuffs, good one can cost more than 1k which is quite crazy consider that I only willing to invest max RM 300 for earphone (higher budget for headphone).

Artistic impression? Perhaps partially true. But once you hear the better sound quality, you wouldn't want to hear the old ones .
For example, I seldom use my EP-630 once I got my Bijou.

I own X3i, EP-630, X3 overall I can say X3i out is the best of the 3. Someone I find EP-630 isnt that clear and the sound is quite muddy and at times the bass can be overpowering lol. X3i comes perfect.

Now I feel like shifting back to normal earphone Yuin PK2. But I couldn't find anyone to bulk it at low price. Any Seller here wana bulk this monster PK2?

ksc 75 + recabled + amp

what holding me back from getting KSC75 is that the type is clip on. I don feel comfortable with that.

i used to have EP830 and it was spoilt and i got bijou instead
overall ep830 is quite ok and the bass is quite balanced. Bijou's bass is quite strong and crisp.
My EP830 spoilt coz got dragged on the road and the earphone broke into half

Try Lear LE01, though the bulk just closed. I was suppose to get KSC75 from bulk, but couldn't wait any longer so gave LE01 a shot since it had favourable reviews and I tried EP-630 which I find the bass compromised the clarity of the music. I find LE01 performs just about right at all fronts for such a cost, its even better than my full sized Philips SHP2700. The only shortfall is the J-cord.

J cord is a shortfall? In fact I like that thing! haha, wow Lear LE01 is just an infant company yet it is getting some really good reviews from many parties...Worth the try ler..

How abt Sennheiser MX series?

One man's meat is another man's poison, i guess. Would love to try crossroad x3/bijou myself and see how it compares with LE01.

On a short note, i recommend replacing the original eartips provided by Lear with Sony Ericsson ones, or any other eartips with larger accessible "holes", I find the original ones too small, blocking/not letting in enough of the sound.

One question here I must ask: Can a phone perform better than a music player? I'm using my sony ericsson p1i with all the songs and earphones/headphones..Somehow I think my phone perform better than my punny lil Creative Zen V Plus, although there were rave reviews about how good the sound quality of the music player is..Quality aside, my phone somehow cannot afford to push itself up to the level of powering a pair of Senn HD 212 pro..I think it's quite power hungry, because my current rig doesn't seem sufficient to let it shine, to perform at its very best..It's constrained..Like not enough energy liddat..Please help!

Sony Ericsson eartips fit just perfectly, same as any other IEM eartips, i guess.

IMO, it would depend on the equalizer, on my SE walkman phone, it has a megabass feature, which when i turn it off, the sound quality which i thought was perfect suddenly turns to crap. Told myself not to expect much since its primary function is phone after all. But on my ipod, the sound quality is true to the source without equalizer turned on. I guess in your case, its time to change your music player? Or get an amp?

FiiO E5 amp is a good start, and it's not so expensive (~RM 90 include postage).
I'm considering getting it soon.

Yeah, FiiO e5 would be a good start. Though I use a Cmoy amp, custom built by one of the forumer here.

hows SHP2700 in comparison with KSC-75?

I seem to be the only one here seriously against the Bijou. I really, really dislike it.. No matter what bijou, 1, 2, 3 or 4, the bass all sounds really bloated and muddy, spoils the whole sound. To me it's a radical difference from the X3I, even though the bijou is supposed to be the successor(and in that matter, superior, i guess).

I much prefer the X3i, and simply don't like the bijou. I'm really guessing most of the people who love the bijous have never heard of the x3i, because it seems like crossroads took a step back when they designed the bijou to replace to x3i.

my friend had an x3i.. the cable died, and he went back to claim warranty. it got replaced by a bijou 3, which is supposed to be the replacement for the x3i, and he can't stand it as well. I also need to mention, barely a month after he got his new bijou 3, the cable started dying as well.

I heard the first batch of bijous were rushed out and there were serious quality control problems.. Like cables tearing, driver casing opening and stuff.

As you can tell I'm not too big a fan of crossroads products. But I'd avoid it if i were you guys. All this is IMHO of course

i still waiting to confirm for the Fiio E5 amp, but from what i read it's quite good to be paired up with IEM. big cans however, may not benefit much from this portable amp though.

well... there's improvement on bijou definitely... X3i doesn't have enough bass to support other genre... as it's more focused on treble... thus there's Bijou Level 3 with added bass punch...

now with bijou... u can listen to all type of music be it pop / jazz / rock / punk / R&B n etc

maybe ur fren was the 1st batch so QC wasn't good. i got mine last year... and already going to be 1 year old... so far my cable is still going strong.

so far my Bijou sounded very nice to me, so it's either purely personal preference or the built quality of the earphone itself.

well... level 3 is still kinda bassy...

so far reviews shows that the best all-rounder level is 4.. since it's the closest to the X3i so far...

level 3 is kinda like Xbi...

level 2 ( my friend's wan ) is kinda like Lbi

got to tell u.. bijou 4 is really good for vocals and instruments. it makes songs like hotel california-the eagles, another you-cromok, tears in heaven- eric clapton sounded so life like...

but still miss the bassy bass of bijou 3 (but using fiio E5 fixed the bass problem)

Hmm..maybe my ears not so sensitive, but I cannot detect any noticeable difference..Although when I set it on Bass boost..There's a slightly more bass in the sound output..However, the bass is still kinda tight, doesn't sound very "loose" and diffused...

Is that what E5 is supposed to do ? hehehe..

Planning to get either a Senn HD 555 or E4C ler...Any advice?

I've never tried Bijou so can't really give much comments..haha..If you don't like in ears, take the Senn HD 212 pro..It's great..The bass is really "thumping" ur skull..You can feel each beat, I mean EACH beat..so it's really fun to listen..haha..

If you're walking around type, then closed headphones and in ears shouldn be you consideration...hahah..too bad Senn HD 212 pro is closed...KSC 75's bass is really tight, although not as "bassy" as Senn HD 212 pro..Or EP 630 for that matter..hhaa.

A Pcwork recabled KSC75 is always great anytime..Not so 'bassy' compare to other earphones..But I like it..

yeah i'm actually considering pcwork's ksc75..
but the colour a little attractive compared to the pure black colour..
that's the main reason why i'm hesitating now.. T.T

Extra earclips? you mean other than the stock ksc 75 clips? Wow..how does that look like? haha..the headband mod? It has a 0.0001% of causing any noticeable damage to your ksc 75..haha..cuz basically you're just detaching the clips and attaching the headband to it i tried before, no success though..hahaha..No skill to the max

Long story man, its still the same stock ksc 75 clips.I lost it twice, the first one was my right earclip.. One of the forumers(Thanks!) has an extra pair of stock earclips, so I got it from him.. Then few weeks later I lost my left earclip, but thank God I still keep the original left stock earclip that I first bought. So I'm still using the earclips till now..

What headband u used anyway?

How much is the LEAR101? iz it better than Ep630?

erm..The headband was salvaged from some junkie headphone I guess..Although I was kinda shocked to see" KOSS " brand labelled on it..because supposedly some other shop used the headphones from KOSS and slapped their label on it hhaa..

LEAR is about 80? I think it's almost the same gua...One is Singapore, another is China..haha..

Lear LE01 could be get for around USD40 off ebay ... for something lower than RM100 with good bass, you may take a look at soundmagic PL11, bro ClieOS just did a review on it

Haha..recabling is not about fixing a broken cable..Because for that to happen, it'll probably take more than a year or two, considering the manufacturers that produced them are professionals with high quality workmanship

pa2v2 is quite good i think..I'm getting 1 from my friend for about 150rm..so it's quite a good deal..I've got a fiio e5 to go with my ksc 75..hmmm not much difference to my ears though..Maybe because ksc 75 mmg dun need amp...haha..

Yea, for 150rm very very very worthwhile lo..haha...Best in class i think although Pcwork taiko's works also very impressive

hehe yeah i tried the KSC 75 with fiio e5..not much difference..Although on flat mode, there was slightly better separation..But on bass mode, although the bass was a bit tighter..nothing much changed..Albeit a bit louder..haha..

actually 580 is very good despite it is vintage lol
580 is similar to hd600 but using much cheaper materials....
if u mod it by using hd600 or hd650 grills, headband, and other stuffs, then it is price of the hd600....
detachable cables and all rounder and cheap wat could u ask for more?

580 also one of my favourite cans which nowdays is hard to find..but is one of best Pecisioning Headphone for Classical music
