albnok : I was shooting at ISO 200, aperture F5.6 for group shots but the place was quite dark and I cannot match Ahmike's shots for exposure when my F42 is blasting at full power whereas he was shooting a ISO 200 at aperture F8!!

Thanks goldfries for putting the price list, I used to worry that I wouldn't catch the first page LOL. Anyway this post is here too in case of anything that I could say "refer to Page 1!" biggrin.gif

shootkk: You should be able to pull off ISO400, with ambient light factored in. 1/20s, F5.6 ISO400 should be brighter and less noisy. That said I'm fine with the A100 at ISO400.

so much difference. which one you like???

one of the reason why kysham and other c-foo insist to buy the flash first after getting your DSLR....

16105 is Sony design. It was supposed to be an updated version of the CZ1680 but Carl Zeiss did not approve the design and forbid Sony from using the T* coating on the lens. Therefore it's sold as a normal lens. This means that this lens is as good as the Carl Zeiss 16-80 but without the Zeiss T* coating.

As for 18250, it's just Tamron design.

As for 18250, it's just Tamron design.

so can i say the quality is comparable btwn CZ1680 vs SAL16105?? omg..abit heartpained >.<

btw...just a short survey...how many lenses do u guys usually bring..say for a trip?or normal outting??

i currently hving 50mm prime + cz1680.......might get a SAL70300G as a gift..but nt sure whether i would utiliz all the 3 lenses anot..coz my crumpler bag can only bring 2..lol..don wanna neglect any of my lens sweat.gif

What lens you aiming for ? if you seldom shoot dark area then go for lens. if you mostly shoot in dark area then better stanby a flash.

the 1680cz is better than 16105 in terms of contrast (awesome microcontrast from T* coating) and larger aperture. it's also slightly better in terms of corner sharpness. i guess you get what you paid for. i would get the zeiss if i have extra bucks... but for budget conscious people, 16105 is a wiser choice. it has better build quality than the zeiss.

erm... you mean photo taken with the F58 + Lambency? Don't think so... Signither just quoted a photo where I was holding the F58 with Lambency attached. I was just playing around with it. Not really taking photos with it. So can't really judge if it is any good or not. Should be acceptable, I think? Any Lambency users here? icon_question.gif

Omni-bounce you mean the "condom" like diffuser aka Stofen-Omnibounce?

Lambency anytime for me, but sometimes I felt that it's pretty heavy and distracting. I'm using Demb now. Kinda like it due to its weight. smile.gif

Stofen Omnibounce for the compact & easy to carry, Lambency for the sheer additional surface area it offers.

I use the software that Sony supplied. CS3's ACR is crap at converting Sony's RAW files. Besides, CS3's ACR do not have the DRO adjustments built into it.

F42 can use 430EX/EXII diffuser

i've tried Gary Fong Lightsphere (ori) before on my F42 .... one thing I don't like about it was that it always fell... it fits tight actually, but less grippy. The whaletail (toilet bowl) had better gripping because rubber band is used.

kysham : Slowly lar bro.... Next poison, dun mind telling you is the A900 lar... but have to slowly mend my pocket hole first and get more paid jobs and work the cobra for all that's it's worth.

Then when (not if but when) I get my A900, I will put my 50mm on it and at last my fifty will have a place to call home like my 18250 lar.

Next on my list after the A900 is the CZ 24-70 F2.8 lor but this is further still down the road lor....

Then only the 70300G SSM. No worries, it's still there on the wish list just not so high up lar. Then after that can close shop and shoot until the cows come home! Hehehehehe..

F42 can use 430EX/EXII diffuser

i've tried Gary Fong Lightsphere (ori) before on my F42 .... one thing I don't like about it was that it always fell... it fits tight actually, but less grippy. The whaletail (toilet bowl) had better gripping because rubber band is used.

thank bros.. i already have an omnibounce.. not sure if wanna get the lambency or not.. coz so many poison saying demb is better.. so maybe i just aim for demb for my next buy.. nod.gif

Demb is the best for me, I went to DirectPhoto yesterday and the sell at rm160.

erm.. by the way, saw that demb uses a velcro right?? so is it like 'free-size' or have different one for F42 and F58?? unsure.gif

i thought i can get rid of cobra poison after i get my F42.. but the poison is still there, getting stronger everyday sad.gif

the picture above for me looks weird maybe because of ...err arghhh.... what can i say... I just give links the for me i think it looks moarr natural huhu

example from my fren

hmmm maybe the sudden change from dark to bright area is too drastic? or maybe need to soften the effect moarr?

bro, some more natural vignetting that i like t use biggrin.gif

photoshop -- filter -- distort -- lens corrections -- vignette -- amount -40 to -50, midpoint -30 to -40 (or u can try with ur own taste too) leave the other default.

Hey all, got any recommendation on where to service lens besides Sony Center?

I need to service my KM 28-75 f2.8, I think aperture blade got some oil. Only sharp at f7.1 and above as compared to a friends KM. I got another KM 28-75 f2.8 coming from US (crazy already), might wanna sell off either one of once I got both in my hands.

Try looking for Albert Cheah of Cheah Cameras IINM. Next to Digicolor in Mutiara Complex, Jalan Ipoh. Heard he's great with older lenses.

just my noob point of view..
i think given the aperture is at F5.6 and the 'background' of the duck is kinda near to it...y don include something after the pond/river..i think it'll definatly giv u bokeh u wan..

better try first..

set ur alpha to 10 sec selftimer mode.

use
exposure = 15sec
aperture - F16 or more
ISO = ISO100

then if its not suitable with ur painting, just modify the aperture and exposure..

so can i say the quality is comparable btwn CZ1680 vs SAL16105??  omg..abit heartpained >.<
btw...just a short survey...how many lenses do u guys usually bring..say for a trip?or normal outting??
i currently hving 50mm prime + cz1680.......might get a SAL70300G as a gift..but nt sure whether i would utiliz all the 3 lenses anot..coz my crumpler bag can only bring 2..lol..don wanna neglect any of my lens sweat.gif

QUOTE(soulfly @ Dec 9 2008, 11:33 PM)
the 1680cz is better than 16105 in terms of contrast (awesome microcontrast from T* coating) and larger aperture. it's also slightly better in terms of corner sharpness. i guess you get what you paid for. i would get the zeiss if i have extra bucks... but for budget conscious people, 16105 is a wiser choice. it has better build quality than the zeiss.

16105 - my next wishlist

Hey all, got any recommendation on where to service lens besides Sony Center?
I need to service my KM 28-75 f2.8, I think aperture blade got some oil. Only sharp at f7.1 and above as compared to a friends KM. I got another KM 28-75 f2.8 coming from US (crazy already), might wanna sell off either one of once I got both in my hands.

this is nt really a technique la..just need some practices..

ok...
1)setup ur tripod..or at least put ur cam at a stable place
2)check ur framing against ur background..e.g how much spaces u r allow to move/write/draw ur stuff and yet within the frame..
3)place sumthing at the place u gonna stand..and manual focus it..
4)set ur cam to shutter priority..and set the exposure time according to ur needs
5)close the light
6)press ur shutter..
7)run back to the place where u set the focus and swing ur torch light like MAD~ =D

okay..u might develop a better way of doing light painting..but dats basically how i do it..

p/s : and if u r writing sumthing..basically u hav to write everything invertedly..

@jimlim
pp means post process

better try first..

set ur alpha to 10 sec selftimer mode.

use
exposure = 15sec
aperture - F16 or more
ISO = ISO100

then if its not suitable with ur painting, just modify the aperture and exposure..

my first attemp failed...

but dats after almsot 30mins of practice...

basically..if u stop at 1 point to think aobut how to write ur words..u probably wont have time...and if u on ur torch there n think..u gonna hav a very bright spot...so my advice is..if u need to think inbtwn..off ur torch light while maintaining the position..and on it to continue to write...

fyi..im writing that with a very small size torch light..probably the size of my index finger..for the ease of on n off...and ur arms wont b so tired after swinging it like crayz for some times..

good luk..gotta slp now...not much time left for me sweat.gif

for the sticker version (GGS) i think u can use it on either a200/300/350.
but for sony plastic lcd protector, they have 3 choices. a200 .. a300/350.. a700

It really depends on your need. I'd assume u have the kit lens 1870. So you have to ask yourself why would i need a 50mm which i already covered with my kitlens.

But to answer your question, the minolta 50mm f1.7 is a "must have" for all sony users, i've one. It's cheap (relatively), very sharp and have nice minolta bokeh and color. Its also a fast lens. But u have to get use to it as u cannot zoom with it (more leg work). But the pics that came out with this lens is really "wah" for me the first time i used it, never regretted getting it.

But i still have to stress that 2nd lens to buy really depends on your need...

Try talking to Daruma (he has LX3 as well) or those who decided to change system.

To me, a camera can't suit everyone in the world but I'm damn happy with my Alpha rclxm9.gif

of course using at far end 210mm.. most lens even will lose details esp for zoom lens.

mostly prime lens can only retain much more details.

Repeat after me...

Pixel peeping is bad for you!

As for the High ISO noise issue...

I find that if you watch your exposure, even ISO 800 on the A100 is acceptable and fine for 4R and even 8R sized prints.

How often do you print pics larger than that? Also how often do you really need to push ISO up to 800 or 1600? If you go back and look at all the pics you've taken, you will find that you maybe need ISO 800 and above only about 10% of the time so why fuss so much?

Need opinion here...I have f58....I like to do strob photography n i have 2 umbrella. What do u think

1. Should i buy another flash ....nissin around RM4++ that can be triggered by pop up too.
2. HVL42 ...new one rm7++
3. 300 watt strobe light ....rm600 without battery pack (I have to use plug so not mobile). (not sure can fit into my light stand and silver umbrella) definitely can be triggered with pop up flash/flash.

for budget, buy the one that u metioned to me earlier..nissin setup..

or if u dont need mobility, strobe light will be perfect choice as u always shoot indoor models rite? biggrin.gif

I would suggest the F42 coz it gives you more control when using with the F58 and Alpha 700. And it is so mobile/portable.

That's the reason I am NOT selling off my F42. Hehehehehehe....

signither : Unless you really, really feel the need to get a F58, stick with the F42. It's sufficient for normal use. Unless, you're like me lar... shoot at full power also not enough light.

achew: Amazing colors as usual.. though technically in #2 it's a bit oversharp for a film shot. Film doesn't get that crispy. tongue.gif

Nice light paintings!

ryzan76: The Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 on an APS-C camera will have about the same range as the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 on a full-frame camera. I don't think 24-70mm on APS-C is appropriate as it's not wide enough to shoot events and big group photos. Plus the 24-70mm is huge...

ReaperOfSoul: There are FOUR polycarbonate screen protectors for Sony Alphas:

PCK-LH1AM - for A700
PCK-LH2AM - for A200
PCK-LH3AM - for A300 and A350
PCK-LH4AM - for A900

They cannot be mounted on a camera which it is not designed for. All of them go for RM50.

The GGS one can be gotten for RM40 in Tarita Low Yat with free installation. That one is a very solid glass.

dark lenanza: I've been for every Rock The World except the first one. Sure must go wan! Even though the bands are about the same, I know I'll bump into all my friends there.

hanafinoor: Definitely the F42 because you can control power by ratio if you pair it with the on-board F58, using the A700. Regardless, wireless TTL is a very, very useful feature!

Oh and you can use your F58 on body, F42 off-camera, and the SB-600 with a PC Sync adapter (connect this to the PC Sync port of the A700). Alternatively, the PC Sync adapter can link to the radio trigger, if it has a PC Sync port as well.

ryzan76: I'd suggest the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8. The Sigmas may have a gear-stripping issue (if other things strip when you use the lens, then not so bad lah...)

Need opinion here...I have f58....I like to do strob photography n i have 2 umbrella. What do u think

1. Should i buy another flash ....nissin around RM4++ that can be triggered by pop up too.
2. HVL42 ...new one rm7++
3. 300 watt strobe light ....rm600 without battery pack (I have to use plug so not mobile). (not sure can fit into my light stand and silver umbrella) definitely can be triggered with pop up flash/flash.
If you were to get a non-Sony flash, get the cheap one with manual power control, and trigger them via RF triggers. The Nissin works fine, but you will not want to trigger it with the pop-up flash. It just doesn't sync (based on my experience with Di466 for Canon). It flashes, but it doesn't come out in the picture unless you set the pop-up to manual flash. But then, you can't use it together with Sony wireless flash. With RF trigger, you can attach the transmitter to the sync port and use Sony wireless at the same time.

What's great about F42AM is that it's more sensitive to trigger compare to older flash like F36AM or F56AM. I have tried a shot where the flash was not even in the line of sight and it triggers (subject on the stairs, flash on the 1st floor directly above me and I'm shooting from the ground floor)

hey guys...im getting my very 1st DSLR..they recommended me A200, D60 and 1000D. But im not sure which to go, can tell me more about these 3 DSLR? Me myself Sony fans...im eyeing A200...but whts the diff between a300 a900?
*
a200
Super SteadyShot in body - meaning no need buy VR, Vibration Reduction (Nikon) or IS, Image Stabilizer (Canon) which cost more than regular lenses without VR and IS.
a200 wins 2008 TIPA award for best entry level dslr camera.
alot cheaper and newer model than D60

D60

3 AF point compared to 9 AF point of a200
VR lenses for Nikon is cost more..
Older model than a200 and 1000d..
Not much detail I know about d60

1000D

Never read about this one..
But IS lenses for Canon..

Basicly I would suggest a300 rather a200 because if your budget is aiming D60 and 1000D, then the price tag of a300 is around those D60 and 1000D.

differences between a300 and a900?
10.2 MP vs. 24.6 MP
CCD sensor vs CMOS sensor
Live View vs Intelligent Preview
Budget camera vs Cash splash camera
RM 2k++ vs RM 8k++

Just helping out smile.gif

A900 is a full frame camera that is in the same class as the Nikon D3 and D3x as well as the Canon 1Ds MkIII

I would say A200 is the most feature rich DSLR compare to other 2 models...

A300 n A900 practically different league...
A300 APC n A900 FullFrame Cmos which means A900 got bigger censor size compare to A300...
Another more obvious different is the price...

For 1st DSLR A200 will be sufficient n if got more money, can consider A300 (extra feature like live view n tiltable lcd)...
A700 will be another good choice, Cmos sensor n very very reasonable price n can be consider one of the best Cmos DSLR in its level...

Just my two cents...

i dont think the a200 and a300 in totally different league. the specs are about the same.

the main differences i can think of is live view and viewfinder.

if u come from pns and think live view is necessary for u, thank a300 is the way to go. plus the tilting live view and quick af separates a300/350 live view from other brand.

the second one is the optical viewfinder. a200 OVF if significantly larger than a300 since they dont need to cramp live view in it.

so if u think u can live without live, a200 is better value for money. at around 1450 with single kit lens, u can also add up another 700 for f42 flash.

i chose a300 since the live view mode is quite handy. u probably dont need to use it as much as the pns, but if you need it, it will be there

if u come from digital compact - live view is where u use the lcd to display what your camera see. in other words, an electrical view finder

user posted image

OVF - optical view finder is the thing above the lcd, where u commonly see the 'pro' uses smile.gif

i cannot comment much about ccd and cmos since my knowledge is limited sweat.gif

CMOS = better in handling noise (shooting indoor or dark place - not enough light). so can use higher ISO without affecting picture quality much..
CCD = sharper image when enough light. downsize is bad at handling noise compared to CMOS - but should be fine if print on regular picture size/without pixel peeping.

There is no "better one" between CCD and CMOS. They completed each other. Otherwise CCD's manufacturing will be stopped long ago. It was based on your photography style - at daylight or at night/indoor. smile.gif nod.gif

CMOS is only better at high iso handling. CCD will produce crispier images than CMOS at its optimum ISO levels.
Digital medium format camera still use CCD for a reason.

a200/300 has the most useful feature compare to its competitors in the entry level segment.

no limit.

if you want cheap but fast writing speed get kingston elite pro (SLC type NAND)
those transcend 133x aren't exactly fast writing... they're using MLC instead of SLC NAND flash. they're cheap though.

I feel CF cards are of better build compared to SD cards ( quality in terms of fragileness ). Besides that , CF cards are able to hold higher capacity at the moment. If im not mistaken its 32gb currently. Plus, it is much cheaper compared to SD cards. I bought a 8gb 'speedy' CF card for RM 130 only

here i found a interesting speed test of A900 CF card performance test>>> http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/camera_mu...p?cid=6007-9652

seems that elite pro 133x stands at least 7mb/s at 2GB card type...higher capacity faster the speed blink.gif

Well, if got card reader( i mean good one, not RM10 all-in-one type) then use it, much faster than using cable.

Well, it depends...unless you got a fast and expensive card reader and a fast card then it will be fast.

try getting the black apacer card reader. I have 2 version of apacer card reader, one 10 bucks and the other cost me 40 bucks. The 10 bucks can only achieve 3-5mb/s while the 40 bucks one hit 30mb/s read speed.

cable transfer rate is actually quite fast with the Alphas, but then again it depends on the card speed too. it drains battery though.

if you want cheap but fast writing speed get kingston elite pro (SLC type NAND)
those transcend 133x aren't exactly fast writing... they're using MLC instead of SLC NAND flash. they're cheap though.

odd though
i have a transcend and kingston both 8gb both 133x

i was playing around with continuous shooting mode
the transcend was able to burst 13 photos (jpg) but the kingston is only able to burst 9 photos (jpg)

You need to test whether the cam can take pics at all aperture settings.

- need to test if pop up flash is working.
- need to test if Steady Shot is working.
- need to test if wireless flash commander is working.
- need to test if cam can work with Minolta lens.
- need to test if flash hotshoe is working.
- need to test if kitlens is good copy or not.

Meaning got lots of things to test lar and most of them is poison, especially if I am around! Hehehehehehe... So dun forget to look for me ah, ok? whistling.gif
